Dominik: Bank On Koetter

January 6th, 2016
Former Bucs rock star general manager weighs in.

Former Bucs rock star general manager weighs in that this man is your next Bucs coach.

Few people know Team Glazer as well as former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik. The man worked in the front office for Team Glazer for nearly two decades.

Now a full-time member of the NFL media, both on SiriusXM NFL Radio and BSPN, Dominik happened to be broadcasting live on “Late Hits” with co-host Howard Balzer when news broke that Lovie Smith was jettisoned by Team Glazer.

Knowing what he knows and how Team Glazer works, Dominik said it is a safe bet that we all know the next coach of the Bucs. And that man’s name is Dirk Koetter.

This seems logical. As Joe speculated earlier, it’s a pretty safe bet that Team Glazer already knows who the new coach is whether that is Tom Coughlin, Chip Kelly or Koetter.

With so much invested in America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, you want transition to be smooth.

    Well that eliminates him.

  2. NJBucsFan Says:

    No hard knocks now

  3. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Stop trolling us with Chip Kelly Joe. LOL Tom Coughlin…too old.

If it’s not Koetter it will have to be a rookie coach or a vet who has something wrong in his resume or he wouldn’t even consider the Bucs.

When a hot college coach like Chip Kelly realizes the danger of coming to Tampa and turns us down what respectable coach would take the gig?

Koetter is the ONLY name right now that makes any sense.

The name not being mentioned much tonight is Licht. I would love to have been a fly on the wall to hear the conversations between Licht and the Glazers the past month!!!! Perhaps Licht is taking control of the team and becoming the “real” GM instead of a Bruce Allen style lapdog. Perhaps Licht and Koetter already have established a good relationship and so the Glazers feel confident.

  4. Costa Rica John Says:

It better be Koetter. We will set the franchise back again if it’s not him. Make sure we keep him for more than two years.

  5. Dave Says:

Hope you happy fans are watching people who actually know stuff.
They are all pissed and shocked and disgusted.
Marriochi is disgusted and basically said coaches and players will not want to come here.

  6. salish_seamonster Says:

Stop it with the Coughlin talk. That’s ridiculous.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think Koetter would actually be the safest pick…..you have complete continuity with Jameis and the offense…..Hire a strong DC……

If you hire someone else you would have to be sure that person would retain Koetter & that Koetter would be OK with the hire……

I think blowing up the entire coaching staff would be a huge mistake.

  8. BucfanAnd fsufan Says:

My vote is for Coughlin, with Koetter asst. Head Coach to stay and work with Jameis but I think Coughlin will bring that discipline and stability the Bucs need.

  9. NJBucsFan Says:

@Dave – you do realize that members within the industry happen to say nice things about people because their paths may cross again? They could really care less

  10. Clodhopper Says:

My vote is Koetter but we can’t rely on Dom knowing the Glazers if Licht is the one doing the hiring. Dom don’t know Licht.

  11. Jason Says:

That no-talent A-clown at least knows it probably won’t be Chip, because he snapped his pole trying to reel him in last time.
Dumminik may still have a couple sources, though few friends, inside One Buc.

  12. Ray Rice Says:

How crazy would it be if he hired Mike Smith as DC after he got the HC job? In the meantime goodbye Love Master take your soft defense having a$$ with you. Oh, take Charmin man with you too. Both of you duds belong together in the unemployment line. Lovie isn’t even good enough to be part of the FFCA.

  13. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Marriouch is a fool. I dont care how bad the team you took over was if you have the 2nd worst record in the nfl since taking over the job you should be fired. And he didnt take over a team devoid of talent. Waiting for a 4-12 finish next year to fire lovie is pointless.

  14. Eric Says:

    Jimbo Fisher.

    Basically same offense……

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    TBBF

Your plan makes the most sense. Promote Koetter…hire a great DC…let Licht do it not Koetter and let Koetter coach and Licht be the actual GM.

We need both a good coach and a good GM!!! Reading some NYC papers about Coughins travails the past few years and the writers up there blame it on the GM not Couglin because the Giants talent has diminished so much over the past three years.

  16. Trubucfan22 Says:

I respect coughlin a whole deal. But I’m not sure if he still has enough in the tank. Going somewhere new is a tough transition to make. He is well respected though. And he is the type of coach that isn’t an offensive or defensive specialist, he is a true head coach. Overseer only. And I love that. New coaches coming up aren’t like that. They specialize and only know one side of the ball.

I would be happy to have coughlin. I just hope there is enough tread on the tires to build something with. I’m hoping and praying the next coach is a guy we will have for the next decade plus.

  17. This Guy Right Here Says:

“Only thing people give a sh!t about is wins.” ~ Dirk Koetter

Yup, This is our guy… Make it happen Glazers!

  18. LargoBuc Says:

Koetter, for Jameis’ sake. And a really strong dc. And Licht should be president of football operations/gm. This is exciting!

  19. RealityCheck Says:

@Dave…an old fired coach is outraged that the this team fired it’s coach…so surprising! I’ll never understand how so many fans can be so satisfied with incompetence and terrible football. Lovie Smith did not demonstrate anything that showed he was a good coach. Good riddance.

  20. Stanglassman Says:

Jameis won’t forget his 22 Birthday now for sure. I wonder how the Glaizer’s B-day card to Jameis read. “Happy Birthday and by the way we fired your head coach.”

  21. Trubucfan22 Says:

Koetter is a tough cookie to crack. He did very well in his one season here. But you gotta also see that the offense had a lot of struggles throughout the season. Mostly due to injuries, but good coaches should have a plan and be able to prepare second stringers enough to come in and perform well. After Jackson went down all the passing game had was Evans. Nobody else really stepped in to fill Jacksons role. Humphrey developed a little into that slot type role. But he didn’t replace Jackson. Maybe it has to do with just lack of talent, and you can blame the gm and head coach for that I guess. But I expected more out of the offense. Not that I wasn’t happy with what we got, but I don’t think anyone is satisfied with how the last 4 games went offensively. And it’s only right Koetter gets some of the criticism for that.

  22. BrianBucs Says:

Dom also said the Bucs were going to draft Mariota

  23. Dave Says:

Ok. You guys are right, I’m wrong.
To run an NFL Organization, or any business for that matter, you should change direction and scheme and systems and the people in charge every two years. It works great. Players/employees love that. Makes them want to stick around and play or work there. Really makes players want to come on board. Go on Twitter and listen to LVD. The best defender sounds like he wants out.
If Dirk isn’t the HC, Winston just got setback 2 years.

    It’s a joke.

  24. Dave Says:

    BrianBucs
No, he said they should, it was his pick. He never said the Bucs were going to draft him.

  25. Danati74 Says:

    Yes!!!!!

  26. Architek Says:

It’s all about Jameis!!! Not McCoy not Lovie not anymore of the losing mindsets.

Winning is coming people stay tune

  27. Brent bull/buc Says:

I’d be willing to give a koetter licht scwartz team a shot. I’d like to have these guys in place more than 2 years though.

  28. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Dave

Perhaps more than anybody here I appreciate your points and understand them.

I would only disagree with you and several other posters on one thing. I’m not so worried about #3′ development anymore. I’ve seen enough. This kid is a self starter…a highly motivated individual who will thrive under any coach. Now that he’s had a year in the league…and a year off the field to learn the way of a pro..#3 is READY. Yes a bad coach could lessen his chance of winning but I do not fear any coach hindering #3’s development. If the Bucs provided #3 with poor coaching he’s the kind of self motivated guy who would find help from outside the organization if he had to.

It’s the rest of the team I worry about and establishing a winning culture. Right now we not only have a losing culture we have a chaos culture..from all the coaching changes and player moves to MRSA…JFRO’s meltdown…it’s been a wild few years for Buc fans!!! How long would a new coach need to get all of this under control. If it’s Koetter hopefully he’s got such a head start it wouldn’t matter but what stranger is going to come in and change things overnight.

  29. Eric Says:

Whoever we get you guys will turn on him.

  30. Another J Says:

Hire Koetter as HC,and Get Spags from the Giants, He’s already looking for a new gig.

  31. Another J Says:

Or Dirk Koetter, and Mike Smith as the DC.

  32. Dave Says:

    St Pete

    Good point on Winston.
I still worry about a QB who throws himself in, all in, where to get a system and then has to change. All that change and systems and coaches that have ruined many many QBs over the years.
As for the attitude in the locker room if you read Twitter the players are saying it’s not just Winston changing the culture, it was Lovie as well.

Oh well. I’m calming down. It is what it is.
I just think Lovie deserved 1 more year because they are trending in the right direction with a strong foundation in place.

If anything people should be upset at how inept the ownership is

  33. Big Mo Says:

The hire should be Doug Williams. He would instill some discipline and can relate to Jameis. He may be able to motivate the football players on our team to be men who play football.

  34. nate123455789 Says:

    Chip kelly

  35. WalkdaPlank Says:

Koetter is my pick mainly because you have to center around Jameis. Lovie did not run the offense, Koetter did. Jameis had a very good rookie season under Dirk’s scheme along with the rest of the offense and it would be foolish to mess that up.

Imagine if Evans didn’t drop passes and cry.

Imagine if VJax was healthy all year.

Imagine if Murphy was healthy all year.

Imagine if ASJ was healthy all year and didn’t drop passes when healthy.

Hopefully Dirk is brought back as HC or OC, then this offense will be SCARY year 2. But don’t bring him back, and you mess all that up, including Jameis.

  36. Fsuking Says:

Was this all to keep Hard Knocks from knocking on the door of One Buc Place? An it was mostly incompetence. What a beautiful series of events in Lovie’s 2 years. Tank year 1 and get the best QB imaginable and then position himself perfectly for another great draft! Forget wins, that man was a genius. Now it’s too bad that Koetter is gonna come in and ruin our top 10 picking spree that we have been on for so many years.

  37. Rod Says:

When you take an OC and make them a HC, they have less time to do what they did that made them successful. I wanted to keep Koetter and if it meant that they had to make him HC to do so, then so be it, however unless the Glazers had solid info another team was going to hire him I don’t really get why you’d want to move him out of his longtime position of OC and wait another year.

This doesn’t make me all that excited for next year and it really seemed like it was up, up, up for the team. Now it feels like they just destabilized something good. It could work out, or it could be another Morris situation.

  38. Rod Says:

The Bucs have hired 3 black head coaches under the Glazers, and 2 white ones, yet they’ll still have to partake in the pandering rule and interview a token black. Amazing in 2016, when we have a black president, that this pandering rule is still in place.

  39. Stanglassman Says:

    Buc it wrote:

Watch for people from the Patriots(2001-2005,2009-2011), Cardinals(2012,2013), and Eagles(2006-2008).

So, Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini, Rob Ryan, Charlie Weis, Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia, Steve Spagnuolo, Sean McDermott, Frank Reich, John McNulty, Todd Haley and Ray Horton.

People in Bold have been considered for HC positions across the league this year.
People in italics have been fired this off-season.

  40. Stanglassman Says:

Eric Mangini would make a lot of sense at DC if Koetter got the HC job. He and Licht coached together in NE 2000-2005.

  41. Gengar Says:

If we risk losing Koetter to a HC gig then just give him the keys to One Buc Place. Make him HC, he is too important for Winstons development.

If he is happy as OC, not every one likes the administrative parts of the HC position, then make a HARD push for Matt Patricia. Impossible to tell how much of the defense is his or Belichicks but I think he plays a big part and he has been there for a long time so he could bring some of that Patriots culture of winning, discipline and hard work down to Tampa.

  42. White Tiger Says:

You know one thing that has held true for the last 8 years?

You’d best steer clear of the head coaching position, and the GM position.

…and you better grant THESE “sportswriters” EVERY interview they want.

So, Koetter’s next up on the chopping block, eh? Well, how do you like your next, EX, head-coach-of-the-future?

Pickled or roasted over a raging sports section?

What’s the over/under for the first ‘Head Coach Opinion Poll” (those are always SO informative and Fun, right?

    …I mean, am I right?

    Cool.

  43. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Coughlin as HC…. Koetter OC, Spagnola as DC…..or watch out but Lichts man from NE…. JOSH MCDANIELS

  44. SouthTampaBucsFan Says:

There was obviously something in the works here….Lovie fell on the sword on this one. I like Koetter and I’m okay with the promotion. BUT, I remember when we fired Gruden and quickly promoted Raheem because of “fear of losing him”. It’s as if the Glazers value stock in a coach by the increased interest in him. The Glazers look around the league with a dazed and confused look on their face and when the flies swarm over poop, they quickly take the poop and run with it….. and historically to poop stunk bad and then repeat process….I hope I’m wrong on this one.

  45. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Well Rod if the history of this country and the NFL is any indicator it was a “necessary” evil. Look how bad it was when black qbs started coming out. The 1st one was in Pittsburgh and he received death threats. Ask Doug Williams what he went thru. Even here in Tampa Hugh KKKulverhouse didn’t want to pay a black franchise qb $600,000 who took the Bucs to the playoffs & NFC Championship game in its 3rd year existence. His son pretty much came out and admitted to his father’s misdeeds. NFL took the measure because it knew that the owners refused to hire black head coaches even though many were better than the white ones they hired.

It’s funny how the history of this country is in black and white but so many people have their heads buried in the sand about it then want to whine about quotas and affirmative action even the Civil Rights movementand now the Rooney rule.

I wish people would realize and admit that if there hadn’t been problem and the people who caused all these problems in the first place because of their bigotry those things wouldn’t have been needed. It’s easy for someone who’s never really experienced racism as a whole way if life to complain about something they don’t understand.

  46. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman that was quite the funny thing you posted!

  47. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

I don’t think Chip Kelly has shown he’s capable of GM/HC duties, maybe if he sticks to just coaching? I don’t think he’s a good fit since Koetter’s our OC and probably not going to run Chip’s style. Coughlin is intriguing to me. Look past the age and I see a guy with a lot of the same qualities that I liked in Schiano BUT he has a proven track record in the NFL that will get players to eventually buy in to the culture change. Look around in the NFL and the coaching styles that are typically producing playoff teams…it’s the hard assed “it’s all about details” that typically have sustained success.

  48. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

As long as we can keep Koetter that is (OC/assistant HC). I’m fine with giving Dirk his shot too if the players are behind him. He seems like a straight talk/no BS kind of guy…refreshing from what we had the past couple seasons.

  49. Wes Says:

    F Chip Kelly

  50. Bobby Says:

Well, I’m not thrilled about the decision to fire Lovie. I think the idea of success with a revolving string of head coaches is a pipe dream. I understand the decision. The way we finished the season was horrible and it nullified the progress we showed to get to 6-6. Still, I’m not sure this was the best way to solve the problem. I think the Glazers and Licht could have demanded that Lovie hire a true DC and that he just concentrate on the head coaching job. Maybe they did and Lovie balked at the idea…I don’t know. At any rate, it’s a done deal now and I suppose Dirk Koetter will be the new head coach. My question now is who will be the new OC? Watch for lots of players to be leaving this team in the off season as this team needs to be gutted in the defensive secondary. Now the defense needs to learn a new system. Don’t look for a leap forward next year. I predict 6-10 again at best. We’re starting over again.

  51. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

I predict 6-10 again at best. We’re starting over again

The problem would have been had they kept Lovie the team was probably looking at 6-10 again. I have respect for the Glazer’s willingness to make this move. I’m sure it wasn’t easy on their checkbook (more money on Lovie’s back to the basement fund than they paid Schiano to sit home) or their egos (admitting they made the wrong choice…again). They may not have found the winning formula, but they won’t stop trying…better than owners like the Chargers have…another losing season, eh who cares, keep the HC, we’re putting in for relocation.

  52. Fwg Says:

If we get Koetter n a strong DC n a couple speedy WR n improve the o-line… We could be in playoffs next year easy 12-4
