Brutal Record Vs. Winning Teams

January 11th, 2016
Poor record vs. winning teams.

Poor mark vs. winning teams.

Want to know a reason Lovie Smith is no longer coaching the Bucs? He had a downright awful record against winning teams.

When Lovie arrived, his record against teams with a winning record was 19-of-61, or in baseball terms a .311 average. At least, Lovie was consistent; his record with the Bucs was a hair better.

Tampa Bay won three games against teams with a winning record under Lovie (Steelers his first year, and twice this season against the Dixie Chicks). His record with the Bucs against winners was 3-8.

So, that adds up to a career 22-of-69 mark to raise his win percentage to .319 against winning teams.

That pretty much spells “doom” for an NFL coach.

I’m more impressed with his record against rookie and backup QB’s. IIRC he’s .000 while in Tampa. I could be missing one, but I don’t think so

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

11 double digit loses (blow-outs) is pretty impressive stat!!!

I’ll be looking for Lovie around the neighborhood now that he will have a lot of time off……he’s often been spotted at Cappy’s Pizza here in Tampa Palms…..

Maybe they can name a Pizza after him:

The Lovie: Too much dough, not enough sauce or toppings

  4. CC Says:

Just 1 reason of a long list of awful head coaching stats. Lovie…most overrated ex NFL head coach in recent history.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tom Edrinton

If they burn a pizza, do they call it “The slant pass” or just “The mike jenkins”???

  6. AceofAerospace Says:

I can’t believe anyone thought he had done enough to deserve another year.

  7. Buc since '74 Says:

    Lovie’s talent evaluation:

2nd round pick for Gaines Adams
    No use for Darrell Revis

    Ummm… Lovie… you feeling ok?

  8. Doc Says:

    Bucs-0

    Coach Smith- 10,000.000

  9. mike Says:

we had the easiest schedule ever and went 6-10. We faced MM on his 1st start and a few back ups. we faced some back ups last year too. We played no one and went 6-10.

I feel like the fan base has just come to from a spell and are finally seeing clearly again. Thank god it’s over.
    Go home Lovie Smith.

  11. Couch Fan Says:

Some posted a few days ago that he also had a 5-16 record against losing teams which is even worse!!! Still can’t believe anybody would be ok with bring him back for a 3rd season. He was awfulllllll

  12. Supersam Says:

    Ouch. That is pathetic

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This was always one of Realists favorite attack lines against Lovie.

It just doesn’t impress me! Isn’t that what coaches are supposed to do?
Beat the teams you can and try to compete the best you can with those better than you.

If anything…at least here in Tampa the fact that Lovie did not beat THE WEAK teams was as much his undoing as losing to good ones…hell we only played one good one didn’t we?

For this metric to have any meaning for me I need to see some comparison stats. Give me 3-4 other coaches and their % of wins over winning team versus losing teams.

BTW And I almost hate to post this since I’m a huge Koetter fan…
IMHO Koetter did an excellent job at ASU. In the opinion of the school he did an excellent job after five years and gave him an extension and 4 new assistant positions. He took the Sun Devils to bowls..first coach in twenty years to WIN consecutive bowl games and he had a winning record against their arch rivals Arizona.

Here is the reason given for running Koetter….his record against the premier Big Ten teams.

Overall he was an impressive 66-44…in Conference…21-28!

Doesn’t bother me since nothing is more unbalanced that College Football but for those who whine about feasting on losers…..

No wonder Lovie’s players, past and present, aren’t saying anything. There is nothing to defend. Thanks for these simple facts Joe. The Glazers had to move on.

  15. OneLove Says:

Why are we still talking about Lovie Smith?? Lovie Smith is no longer our Head Coach! He’s just another B*TCH like Schiano and Morris before him!! Let’s focus on our next Head Coach(hopefully Koetter) and NOT TRY TO FIRE HIM in 2018!!!

    WOOOOOOO!! LET’S GO BUCS!!

  16. Nano Says:

And some people wanted to keep this guy around? Wow

  17. Joe Says:

Why are we still talking about Lovie Smith?? Lovie Smith is no longer our Head Coach!

When the Bucs have a head coach for Joe to write about, please notify him at your earliest convenience.

  18. DMAD1 Says:

Ok Joe !! Enough already !!! I know you have a job to do but Dang!!!! Lovie’s gone lets just move on. You got what you wanted!! But it really sounds like your boys the Glasers prematurely F ‘d this thing up again. I just want my team not to be a Browns type franchise if you call it that!!!
    GIVE IT A BREAK JOE!!!!!

The Bucs beat the Cowboys and Eagles with Cassel and Sanchez at QB in 2015, so you’re off by at least two.

  20. Brandon Says:

Joe, your math is all wrong. Being 19-61 against teams with a winning record is a percentage of 23.75% (19/80) while being 3-8 (3/11) is 27.3%.

Koetter was terminated as ASU football coach in 2006? Koetter had a lackluster record against ranked opponents at ASU and besides his record a general perception of Koetter being arrogant and aloof ultimately did him in.

Lovie, great guy while here… But horrible coach.
