Lay Off The Misguided GMC Hate

December 19th, 2015
Stop the hate.

Stop the hate.

Joe understands how the punch to the balls delivered by the rotten Rams Thursday night has Bucs fans enraged.

It totally makes sense how Bucs fans believe that kind of performance was and should be unacceptable.

But so too is the misguided fear and loathing of Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

There are a couple of guys out there who would love nothing more than to geld him. Why? Joe has no earthly idea. Is GMC (thus far) a Hall of Famer? Of course not. Is he a good player? Sure.

Since the start of the 2012 season, no defensive tackle has more sacks. GMC currently has the fourth-most sacks this season of any defensive tackle. So he’s a bum, huh?

No, GMC is not Warren Sapp. No, he is unlikely to get a bust in Canton. When exactly did this become a mortal sin?

This just in: Lavonte David has never made a Pro Bowl and won’t be a Hall of Famer, either. How come folks aren’t lining up to drive the U-Haul trucks from his house? Why the double standard?

Doug Martin won’t be in Canton, either, unless he totally blows up these next four years — as in putting up Walter Payton-like numbers. Joe doesn’t notice anyone trying to run the Muscle Hamster out of town. Again, why the double standard?

So the only guy who can get sacks on a defensive line should be launched? That’s real swift. So the only guy who has ever been to a Pro Bowl on the defensive line is a pile of steaming feces, huh?

Joe never realized Bucs fans so wanted Da’Quan Bowers to replace GMC. That’s what it sure seems like, the way folks are beating up GMC on social media.

Of all the things to be mad at the Bucs for, GMC doesn’t even make the list.

GMC isn’t kicking running backs while they lay on the ground. GMC isn’t tossing balls out of the end zone throwing hissy fits that would get a three-year old paddled. GMC isn’t dropping passes right and left. GMC isn’t getting basted like a holiday ham by low-rung wide receivers. GMC isn’t trying to see if he can outrace a kick returner down the field by running backwards.

But, yeah, GMC is the problem because he isn’t getting 20 sacks a season. Right.

What’s the matter with people?

How do you know LVD won’t be in the HOF Joe?

  2. Thomas T. Says:

Its not that we hate GMC. The problem is when you look at the box score for the Rams game you see him at the bottom with half a tackle. I understand everything you wrote in this article but when you are on the edge of your seat on 3rd and long and you are just as close to the QB as McCoy is its frustrating!

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

GMC is criticized because he was the leader of a losing team….I believe he did the best he could in that role….but failed because the coaches and talent weren’t there.
Now that Jameis is taking over the lead fans need to lay off GMC….I agree entirely. I think they expect GMC to be something he isn’t….maybe if he beat his wife or whipped his children with a tree branch…they’s like him more.

  4. ndog Says:

Joe it is simple McCoy was drafted and paid to be a difference maker and is not even close to being one. We saw on Thursday night what a difference maker looks like and it was surely not the invisible performance by McCoy. And newsflash is not just Bucs fans as I was driving home last night and heard on the Jay Moore show Pete Schrader say the Bucs need to put a APB out for McCoy cause he’s been missing all year and everyone got a great look at his uselessness Thursday night. I literally heard his name once the entire game and this was a must win game on national tv.if he can show up for a game like that when will he show? I think we know the answer and it is never.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

The only problem I had with GMC was that he would say he is the leader at least 100 times a season. And we all know what it means when you have to say you are one!!!

That and I thought he came into this year way underweight, He was getting washed out in pre-season if he did not just run past the guy. But Lovie likes his defense light so that are worn out by the end of the 3rd quarter!!! Fire Lovie!!!

  6. Couch Fan Says:

Ndog is correct. Meaningless sacks at the beginning of games only to disappear as the game goes on is not a difference maker. Best DT in the game? not even close.

  7. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

As stated above GMC always has to tell everyone he is the leader of the team, thats no leader and he has that same blase’ attitude of lovie that he seems ok with losing which has seemed to spread to LVD and others it has to be stopped before it infects jabowins the way to stop it is cut off the head so get rid of 8-22 lovie

  8. steve Says:

It’s not about sacks it’s about making plays. Donald didn’t have any sacks but that guy took over the game. And to compare him to david and martin is nuts. At least you here those guys name through out the whole game.

  9. Harry/Jameis For President Says:

GMC has always been in a no-win situation because of when he was brought on to the team. With so little talent around him, it was going to take years to add the many players that were needed for us to start winning. So many fans connected him to all the losing.

Realist makes a good point – in a way. I even got sick of listening to GMC talk and talk and talk. But we have to realize what the opposite of that would be like. If he stayed quiet with all the losing we had, we would hate him for not being a leader. It is a no-win for him. Lighten up people, GMC can’t do it by himself, but at least he is trying.

  10. Tampa Tony Says:

    Joe doesn’t get it.

When as a team you get very little leadership from the self pro claimed leader or very little production from your highest paid player the criticism is warranted. Saying he’s a top 5 DT isn’t saying much, across the league that position isn’t one that normally gets lots of sacks depending on the scheme a certain team plays.

Where are the pressures? When has he made his teammates better like great players are suppose to? When has he lead the Bucs to anything but losing and embarrassment? Why is the stat only from 2012 on when he came into the league in 2010? Let’s not skew the stats to favor one side

  11. Couch Fan Says:

3 different coaches, 3 bad pass defenses. The common denominator through them all is the guy the defenses were built around. I’m not saying, im just saying…

  12. Evo Says:

Joes, it isn’t hate. It’s a simple fact that the man is not a disruption to any offense. Probowls mean nothing to us. You don’t have to show up in a box score to make a difference. But show us proof of where he makes a difference after halftime of any game?

I said it before and I’ll say it again joe.

I’VE CHALLENGED YOU TO SIT DOWN WITH IAN BECKLES AND WATCH TAPE. WATCH TAPE WITH A GUY THAT’S DID IT FOR 10 PLUS YEARS IN THE NFL. WATCH TAPE WITH A GUY THAT WILL BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT HE SEES. THEN WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT IT AND LET US KNOW IF YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY!

  13. "The kevin" Says:

    Finally some sanity.

It’s because these fans and commenters are complete idiots and have no earthly idea what they’re talking about.

You’re all idiots and are stupid. Go watch soccer you morons.

Most of you have no clue about football. Go be a fan of another team you f ing haters.

Get off McCoy you stupid idiots.

  14. Chumpchange Says:

Sheesh Joe(s), how much did he pay you to write this article? We as fans have every right to pile on Mccoy. Why? Because he’s played like absolute garbage this year. “But his sacks?!?!” Please. He’s been flagged for enough neutral zone infractions (2)/encroachment penalties (1) to negate half of those. Here are some other numbers for yah: According to sporting charts, he’s 72nd in QB hurries and 70th in TFLs. Should we be happy that our HIGHEST paid player is ranking so low? Nope. This is just the tip of the iceburg. His “leadership” seems sorely lacking as well. I’m sure you saw him alone, outside the circle when JW was getting the team ready on thursday. He looked like a 5 year old kicking rocks cause he got picked last in the neighborhood football game; and that’s just one example of many. “Lay off the misguided hate”? Ha, that’s laughable. The hate is very much guided, and for good reason.

  15. "The kevin" Says:

    @evo

Hahahah you mention a guy that played 10 years that sucked lol. Beckles was terrible. He doesn’t know any more than anyone else.

Beckles as the voice of reason? Lmao that’s hilarious.

    Beckles sucked lol.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

First Joe’s not a stats guy yet he uses them all the time.

Next, the problem that I personally have with McCoy and I don’t know about anyone else is that his play doesn’t match his words. No he doesn’t talk trash, but he does say a lot of things during the week, that never matches his play.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Realist, I agree with you … right up until you twisted the whole discussion into a ‘BBQ Lovie’ campaign. In GMC’s case, true leaders don’t have to declare themselves to be leaders. Others follow because THEY view them as leaders; self-anointing doesn’t count for anything. And yes, GMC came into the season too light for a stud DT. Still, he’s a very good DT and this defense needs him.

GMC’s playing hurt, big-time, I’m convinced. If McDonald wasn’t on IR I tend to think that McCoy would sit for a few games and try to heal up the shoulder, but we have no depth so he’s toughing it out. The bum shoulder (and now hand) obviously impair his ability to tackle and get penetration.

Far as Lovie goes, he and Licht took a huge risk going all-offense (except for Kwon) for 2 straight years when we had some big obvious needs on defense. They undoubtedly felt that they could plug certain holes on defense with FAs and play ‘good enough’ to win a reasonable number of games. Several FAs on defense (McDonald, Moore, probably Melton) seem to have really done well in Lovie’s defense thus far, although a couple of others still hold promise I think. Time will tell. Overall though, this defense lacks the playmakers needed to succeed.

  18. destro44 Says:

Ok I’m gong to cut him some slack, he has been playing hurt all season. Well after this last loss we aren’t going to the playoffs so I say shut him down and hope he can be healthy and effective next season

  19. Couch Fan Says:

Hahahah you mention a guy that played 10 years that sucked lol. Beckles was terrible. He doesn’t know any more than anyone else.

    ———————————

So you have to be able to play at a high level to know about football? LMAO.

This is comical coming from a guy that is calling ppl who dont agree with his crappy opinion “Stupid idiots”.

    @evo

“Hahahah you mention a guy that played 10 years that sucked lol. Beckles was terrible. He doesn’t know any more than anyone else.”

10 years is a short time in the NFL?

You’re calling everyone on JBF idiots and you make a statement like this as if you know more about the trenches than Beckles who actually played in the NFL for 10 years.

How many years did you play in the NFL?

  21. Buc1987 Says:

That was a tag team Couch.

  22. Couch Fan Says:

    Lol I see that

  23. Clodhopper Says:

I’m not saying I want him gone. I dont. But seeing Donald dominate the other night was the biggest kick in the balls. Have you ever seen “the best 3 tech in the league” dominate like that? Ever? I don’t remember a time. Could be foggy memory but I don’t recall ever seeing GMC do what Donald did. Even against green horned rookies. When it come to GMC it feels like the media is selling us snake oil. If he was treated like a regular DT by his paycheck, other teams and the media it would be easier to accept he’s just a regular DT. I agree wanting him gone is dumb but his criticism is fully warented.

  24. pelbuc Says:

To whom much is given, much is expected. GMC is average at best and has no leadership skills. He certainly doesn’t elevate the play of his teammates and has NEVER MADE A GAME CHANGING PLAY IN ALL THE YEARS HE’S BEEN A BUC. It’s especially hard to swallow after seeing a dominating performance by Donald who BTW was missing two top linemen. GMC is a zombie.

  25. DooshLaRue Says:

    @1987
Right on about Joe using stats to make his point.

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

Good point so why pay him 10 million per season???

  27. Ed Says:

Doesn’t play “angry”. A “speed”, “quick first step” DT tackle who doesn’t make many plays.

Bowers in my opinion has been more physical and has had a better season than McCoy.

For all his quickness, when was the last time he beat a block and blasted a back in the backfield.

Last time he laid out a QB like the Rams rushers did all night to Winston?

Sorry but watching the Bucs all season Gerald McCoy has been a very average player.

As #3 overall pick from a major school like Oklahoma must higher standards were expected.

  28. Couch Fan Says:

Just seen a video of McCoy once again seperating himself from the team during Jameis’s pre game speech at the Rams game. Looks like he was pouting again…. if nothing else you have to admit this behavior is very odd.

I would post the link but I know Joe doesnt like that. It’s all over FB though if anyone is interested.

  29. St.pete 77 Says:

“The Kevin” aka the Big Dogg!!

  30. BDorry55 Says:

    He’s a LOSER that’s why we don’t like him.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Yah Couch I saw it. It’s not the first time either. I would have never thought he had such a big ego, but I’m starting to wonder.

  32. Ray Rice Says:

    @JOE

Aaron Donald. The best DT in the league. That’s what a beast DT looks like. Plenty of times he was double teamed Thursday night. I didn’t hear or see him complaining. Why? Because he’s a professional. He performs no matter what. He’s not worried about who’s the face of the franchise, who’s leading the team, etc… I’m not asking for HOF, AP, or PB. Just asking for someone that’s working to be consistent, and working to become a savage DT. Unfortunately, our boy doesn’t have this drive. There is no fight in that dog. The proof is there game after game. The way I see it he’s hurting the team more when he’s on the field.

  33. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

We like McCoy, there’s no hate. He’s just not a difference maker and that’s a fact. We all have eyes, we all see it. We saw Aaron Donald have an impact on the game we’ve never seen from McCoy.

Nice player, top 10 at his position. Paid to be the best at his position or close to it though.

  34. "The kevin" Says:

I’m not saying I know more than beckles but to say he has some hidden knowledge cause he played for 10 years. Was not a starter for 10 years. I’m saying beckles doesn’t know any more than anyone else. Would you take financial advice from someone that has terrible reviews? No you wouldn’t. So why give credence to someone who was a terrible football player?

    Idiot.

  35. "The kevin" Says:

You stupid idiots expect McCoy to be sapp and he isn’t or won’t be. Half the teams in the league would line up to get McCoy but you’re all too stupid to know that.

  36. Patrick in VA Says:

What gets me about gmc is how he, and the team, want to profess what a leader he is and how this is his team but he hasn’t led the team to anything. He’s effected nothing positively. And honestly, I have no interest in comparing boom to Warren Sapp. It’s him, Warren and the coaches that are driving the comparisons. Warren talks about how gmc is a better player than he was, gmc constantly references modeling his game after Sapp and talks about how how he’s getting guidance from sap, and the coaches talk about how he’s being used in the defense the way Sapp was and he’s the element that gives us what we had when Sapp was here.

If he’s not the same guy then everyone needs to stop putting the comparisons in fans’ heads. He’s a fine player that we had to pay way too much to in order to keep him here. Is love to draft another guy that’s equally just fine and less expensive and be done with gmc, but he doesn’t need to be gone before a viable replacement is in house.

  37. Buccfan37 Says:

McCoy sure gets piled on unfavorably. To say he has never made any plays is ridiculous. Wasnt it McCoy who had a hold of Ryan’s leg saving a potential comeback late in the Atlanta game? I may be wrong.

  38. MTM Says:

The reason GMC is constantly criticized is his lack of production at crucial times. He shrinks 95% of the time. D tackles with huge contracts are all on lousy teams. There a reason for that. The Bucs invested so much that they can’t trade him and have to play him. If GMC was off the books it would allow Licht to build a deeper roster. Don’t be shocked if he’s moved next year. Licht didn’t draft him.

  39. Jesse King Says:

The people in this comment section are hilarious! He isn’t a self proclaimed leader, the team made him a leader. Did everyone just forget that he was voted as a captain by his teammates? I see WAY too many people saying he has never led hid team to anything and doesn’t make them better, well I guess JJ Watt wouldn’t be welcome in Tampa because he’s never won anything either.

  40. Stevek Says:

GMC is more known for making $100 million and being drafted #3 overall. He also hugged the commissioner and prides himself on picking up opponents after the whistle. Good for GMC.

GMC professes his leadership and advises Jameis to “enjoy” his rookie year and not worry about leading the team. Bologna! Give me 10 sacks, give me a winning season, give me some damn intensity. We have Winnie the Pooh playing DT and we need a Grizzly. Damn it Bucs, the 3 technique is supposed to be the best position on the team. We may not need Sapp, but we can’t have Charmin Bear soft either!

  41. "The kevin" Says:

    @bucfan37

It’s because these people are idiots. They’d rather trade him for a draft pick player with “potential”. If you think our d-line sucks now wait till he’s gone for good. Anyone who believes he isn’t any good should stfu and watch soccer.

I’ve never seen a worse fan base than these punk as s idiots that think they know something. Plain stupidity.

  42. "The kevin" Says:

You morons actually believe that you all know more than every coach in the league that al agree he’s someone you game plan around. But you all know better lmao.

Wow the level of ignorance is astounding.

  43. Bill Says:

Sure, he has put up great numbers in the past, but he lacks any consistency. That has been apparent this entire season. When we are needing to keep Martin on the team, it is likely we will have to cut elsewhere. Would be great to keep him, but he seems like an easy option at this point.

  44. Colorado_Bucs_Fan Says:

    @joe

You made some good points until you brought up LVD and Martin kinda low man.

  45. ndog Says:

The kevin your partner in crime there named one play in his career that in and of itself shows how useless he is. He named one just one play in his whole career and by the way that was the only play he made in that entire game. This guy is useless, overrated, overpaid and his lack of energy and leadership hurts this team period. We would be better off with Melton and a healthy Spence. Yeah I said it. Prime example is did anyone notice a difference the one game he was hurt? I didn’t cause there wasn’t one.

  46. Buccfan37 Says:

But was it the only play he made in his career with the Bucs?

  47. "TheKevin" Says:

@all you stupid as s morons

So your telling me every single coach in the league that says you game plan around McCoy because of his skills is wrong?

Pathetic fans and stupid on top of it.

  48. ndog Says:

Only important play, if you disagree tell us another one.

  49. ndog Says:

So they gamelan for him and make him and the entire defense completely ineffective. I guess teams don’t gamelan for Watt, Donald, VonMiller, or any other player that is consider great but still effects the game. You can call me a moron all you want but tape don’t lie my friend.

  50. ndog Says:

And of course they ate going to gamelan against, him who else on this defense are they going to game plan for?

  51. "TheKevin" Says:

You are a moron “ndog” more like stupid as s mutt

  52. ndog Says:

As expected the kevin no facts just pointless name calling which is fine. What you don’t realize is I am rooting harder than anyone for McCoy and every Buc to be the best player ever but facts are facts and McCoy is letting this team down as a overall#3 pick and highest paid player on the team. If you don’t think the highest paid player on the team sould be an impact player that’s on you but I expect domination and at least to show up when we need a play once in a while.

  53. ndog Says:

Incorrect Jessie king Watt has won defensive player of the year twice. McCoy is not even in that conversation and why should he be?

  54. kenny Says:

You people need to realize he has NO help!!! Bum shoulder and hurt hand…..you would play like crsp too. And no one steps up there game to fill the gap

  55. BDorry55 Says:

His spotty production is the least of my concerns…his blatant lack of interest in Jameis’ pre game speeches are a huge issue for me. Get on the train or get the eff out man. How many games has Gerald ever won for us? I’d pay Doug Martin $20 million a year before I could justify what McCoy is making.

  56. BDorry55 Says:

Him and Lovie can ride off into the sunset and coach a Christian school together or something.

  57. Makie Lovie Says:

Doug Martin got more tackles than the HIghest paid lineman in team history…

  58. MTM Says:

The excuse from the GMC jock sniffers is that they always defend his lack of production on his surrounding cast. Newsflash: McCoy is the highest paid player on the team and must make plays regardless. I realize it’s a team sport but at some point reality has to kick in. It’s the same issue with paying Revis 16 million a year. How do you upgrade the team deficiencies and continue to pay one player with average production the most money. Belicheat wouldn’t do it.

  59. Cobraboy Says:

Donald is what an impact DT looks like.

    McCoy is pedestrian by comparison.

I’m very, very disappointed in McCoy’s production. No impact at all despite what his cheerleaders try to tell us.

Teams game plan for Donald, too, and he STILL creates havoc. McCoy? Meh.

I think he’s butthurt he’s no longer “The Man.” Winston has EARNED that title by production & effort, not words and a fat contract.

BTW: that red streak on his head makes him look like a Mo Ron…

  60. Clodhopper Says:

I finally saw that video of GMC isolating himself during Jameis’ pregame. He looks just like he does on the field. Uninterested. You GMC defenders are going to have to accept the fact that people are going to hate that attitude. Period. I dont care if you are Tom Braydy or a kicker that only has a job until the starter heals from an injury. That attitude is unacceptable.

First he hated the only year we were good. Why? Because he wasnt a big fish. Then, Remember when there were rumors we were going to draft Donald? GMC had a fit about not moving from 3 tech. He knew right then and there Donald was better and it hurt his butt. Then he all but tells Jameis not to lead this team. Probably because he knew Jameis would steal his thunder. GMC’s thunder has no lightning. This guy is soft and he’s poutty, and it showed there, it shows on the field, and it shows on his twitter feed!!

He has an ego problem. There is nothing wrong with being the second most popular person on the team. Know your role. Do the best you can with that role. Have fun doing that role. Kick some ass in that roll. And the fan fare will just fall into place. People will love him again.

  61. Mike10 Says:

You’re right Joe, McCoy isn’t doing any of those things to hurt his team. He also isn’t doing anything to help them either. Play back the tape from the other night. I think I heard “McCoy” once? He is pedestrian as a DT and our line is even worse. He makes no one better.

Why the double standard for David? Because he doesn’t tell us how to think of him or how his teammates should view him, you hear his name FAR more often throughout the game. He makes other players better around him, I can tell you his strengths (fast, smart, usually a good tackler), oh and he’s making half as much money. It’s not your or my money. But when you invest that much into a single player you’re taking other top tier players off the field. That makes the team worse. I’d rather spend 4 mil less on Revis and sign a cheaper DT

  62. Mike10 Says:

    Clodhopper – EXACTLY

  63. C. Alaka Says:

After my normal avoiding Bucs news after a lost, I must add that ppl are stupid! It’s the only logical reason other than GMC sleeping w/ their girl, sister or mother! GMC is one of the best players in his position IN THE NFL!!!! Ppl want HOF players @ every position as if that’s realistic. You know not every position on the field needs HOF. We need to put our energy towards things that are really problems on the team. Trust me is no coincidence that once K. Alexander left the D has been abysmal. The most important positions in this D is a DE (we have no real beast there) the 3 (GMC is a monster when healthy) WLB (David is top 3 in his position) SS (we need more from that position) & MLB…up the middle is our problem…we need more smarts on this team

  64. @FcukTheRefsBroy Says:

McCoy is a perennial pro bowler. Jameis will win playoff games. He’ll make the HoF

  65. @FcukTheRefsBroy Says:

And by that^ I mean McCoy will make the HoF. Not touching that subject w Jameis yet
