Dotson Talks Final Drive

RT Demar Dotson talks about Jameis’ influence in the game-winning drive.

If you ever get a chance to talk to a Tampa Bay veteran, ask them about “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, and watch how their face lights up.

Demar Dotson is no different. The former starting right tackle, who lost his job after being injured in the preseason opener, got his first start of the season today for injured Godser Cherilus. It was Dotson’s first regular season game action with Jameis running the huddle.

Joe and other scribes had a chance to talk to Dotson about Jameis’ influence on the Bucs, and the game-winning drive in which Jameis went all Mike Alstott for a 20-yard run and a first down. It was a play that very well may have saved the Bucs in their drive for a wild card berth.

“He just said, ‘Let’s go man, let’s go!” Dotson said of Jameis in the huddle. “He was just motivating on every play. Even when we would get a penalty or something, he’s still ‘Let’s go! Let’s go! We’re going to get it.’ He’s just always upbeat.

“Even when we are tired and I have my hands on my knees — I haven’t played the game in so long I didn’t think I was going to make it — but when I look at that guy there [Jameis], he’s motivating me.”

Dotson also described the incredible 20-yard run by Jameis that may have saved the season, and what the vibe was for the Bucs on the field.

“You can’t say enough about it,” Dotson said. “I’m looking up saying, ‘Whoa.’ I’m barely jogging trying to get a blow and he is out there fighting his behind off. I just can’t say enough about him. It just says what kind of a leader he is as a young quarterback. He’s a guy that we can get on his shoulders, and he is willing to fight his way to the end. That’s a guy who can lead and I will follow a guy like that.”

Pretty impressive words from a veteran Buccaneer who has been through some s(p)it seasons, and now, largely because of Jameis, finds himself in the middle of a playoff hunt in December.

It is amazing how a rookie quarterback has changed the mentality of the Bucs’ locker room.

As Buddy Ryan use to say, We got a Winner in town”.

  2. Seminole Bill Says:

Before the 2015 draft, I was all-in for Mariota; not because I thought Jameis a lesser player but because of his off-the-field problems at FSU. Wow, was I wrong. I am SO glad we drafted Jameis as our number 1. The young man is a leader, by example. In a few years, given another few draft picks to shore up the defense, we’ll have us another Super Bowl trophy (I was in San Diego for the Bucs-Raiders game and would love to go to another Bucs game in February).

    Winston = LION

  4. Pierce Says:

    Jameis is a true Quarterback.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Seminole Bill …oh I missed the first one, but I’m for sure going to the next one. No matter what the cost.

    It is amazing Joe.

Dotson say anything about that holding penalty of his that almost cost us on that final drive?

  7. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

His two holding calls cost Dougie 60 yards on the day

Who is this guy logging in with Erik with Clean Athletics username? lol

  10. waterboy Says:

The real Erik hated Jameis prior to the draft.

  11. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

He did. But, Erik’s paid his debt, and, all in all manned up about being wrong on the guy.

Honestly, if you only read the agenda driven median campaign against him last year, I can see why he was so misunderstood to some.

This is exactly the guy I saw at FSU.

  12. Luther Says:

    Did 87 get his jersey?

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Luther

Yes 87 got his jersey and had nothing but praise for Erik.

  14. Luther Says:

    That is awesome!!!

  15. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Honestly, I just loved Mariota’s skillset over Jameis’ pre-draft.

And I’m not an FSU fan at all, so I didn’t know Jameis’ personality.

I felt like Mariota was a safer pick and I felt like his skillset was superior.

I didn’t hate Jameis, I was just super duper pro-Mariota.

But now, I really love Jameis and I wouldn’t trade him for any other QB on the planet.

  16. waterboy Says:

Ok if Erik manned up and paid his dept I’ll have to lay off of him but SuperSam still gets it 🙂 SuperSam is still waiting in the shadows for an opportunity to say “I told you so”.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Erik

I was close to your feeling. Although I wasn’t super duper Mariota I thought it was a toss up.

Like you however I realize it wasn’t a toss up. MM is going to be a good QB…#3 is going to be a GREAT QB.

  18. Luther Says:

Erik, you have my respect. It takes a real man to keep his word to a bunch of anonymous usernames on the internet.

  19. GhostofSchiano Says:

    @erik,

Dont feel bad, i had to eat my “fire lovie” words, i was impatient, lovie said wait. I was wrong, love what Lovie has done. Go Bucs

    I agree!

  21. Bo Says:

    Erik… Way to man up!

  22. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

    I appreciate that, gentlemen.

  23. Bo Says:

We all want the same thing.. I think(realist).. No really. Mariota is probably gonna be great, but as a Nole.. Watching Jameis, there’s something special about this kid. You can’t name it or put your finger on it, but whatever it is… He’s got it!

  24. Mike Says:

We should finally get some first rate free agents to apply for employment.

  25. Trubucfan22 Says:

That thing that jameis has, it’s called leadership. Only the best qbs have it.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Erik…I am still very grateful for that jersey. I like wearing it around town, but it’s so damn ugly. The only thing nice about it is the name on the back of it. I’m sure if I wear it into my local BK I’d be allowed to walk right past the counter and start flame broiling burgers unchecked. I’m a superstious guy and it seems when I wear the Bucs Winston jersey they lose. When I wear his FSU jersey they win. So it’s FSU jersey for me for awhile until it proves otherwise.

Any takers on whether the Bucs finish 8-8? If I’m right you buy me a Marpet jersey…

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    superstitious*

  28. waterboy Says:

If you offered that 8-8 bet before the season I would’ve jumped all over that but not now 🙂 I predicted a 6-10 season prior to the start of the season but most of the teams that I expected them to get wins against they lost early in the season so I figured that even 6-10 was a long shot but right now I almost feel they can run the table for the last couple games. Granted Carolina will probably rest their starters the final game.

  29. waterboy Says:

    *loss early in the season*

  30. Eric Says:

Dang overrated out of shape non athletic simpleton………WITH a crappy throwing motion.

  31. Tiny Tim Says:

Yes Jameis is the man and yes I was also one who told you he would be this good. I must must also pay my respect to all the doubters before the draft that did not believe in Jameis but now they do. Be glad buc fans. As a poster said earlier,…we have a winner in town!!!!! This is the real Tiny Tim!!! Capt Tim where are you at???????

  32. godzilla13 Says:

With the exception of the penalties Dotson played really well. The second one on the long run by Martin was horse manure. Dotson was only on the block for a few seconds before disengaging. He is a huge man and controlled his blocks all day. It will be interesting to see if Cherilus gets the starting job back or not?

  33. Newbucsfan2 Says:

Whew…..lets go team. Jump on his shoulders and let’s roll:)!!
