National GMC Hate Intensifies

November 1st, 2015
The anti-Gerald McCoy crowd is no longer just a local curiosity.

The anti-Gerald McCoy crowd is no longer just a local curiosity.

For reasons unclear, collectively, Bucs fans more and more are beginning to hate defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Joe doesn’t get it.

Is GMC a good player? Sure. Is he a Hall of Famer? Not yet. Joe doesn’t see that as any sort of sin at all.

But not most Bucs fans. They act like GMC should be a cross between Mean Joe Greene and John Randle. Not everyone can be a Hall of Famer.

But the hate is not only with a loud sect of myopic Bucs fans. It is growing nationally, and it seems the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo is the Pied Piper.

Recently, the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune made his weekly appearance on Russo’s show, broadcast on the channel that bears his name, “Mad Dog Radio,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio. Russo asked Kaufman if GMC had yet to make a tackle this season.

With the Bucs’ defense shatting all over the natural turf of FedEx Field by choking away a 24-point lead, Russo went off on GMC to Kaufman, just after it sounded like Russo fell off his chair laughing when he learned Kirk Freaking Cousins was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: Did Gerald McCoy play? Can somebody on that defense make a play? … How about McCoy, did he play in the game?

eye-RAH! Kaufman: What is this with you and McCoy? You are obsessed…

Russo: CAN HE MAKE A TACKLE? CAN HE GET A SACK? CAN HE CAUSE A FUMBLE? I MEAN, MY GOD, YOU ARE PAYING HIM $30 MILLION DOLLARS AND HE DID NOTHING ON DEFENSE!

Kaufman: Chris, he is facing constant double-teaming. Double-teaming.

Russo: [Guffaws loudly]

Kaufman: You don’t want to hear it now, but look, the pass rush [wasn’t there]. The secondary is coming under tremendous scrutiny here in Tampa because it is supposed to be Lovie Smith’s thing. Don’t forget: He pushed Leslie Frazier off to the side this year and he took over the defense and the defense is averaging 30 points a game allowed. So, the real shame of it, Chris, is that Jameis Winston is playing well. Doug Martin looks spectacular. Mike Evans… they have two rookies on the offensive line and they gained 500 yards and nobody is talking about that. All everyone wants to know is when Lovie Smith is going to get fired. It is really bad around here and when you lose a 24-point lead, Chris, you deserve what you get.

This is what it has become. Tampa Bay has sunk to some of the darkest, deepest depths in franchise history under (4-18) Lovie Smith, which is saying a lot. The Bucs have become a laughing stock, a punching bag for national radio show hosts.

The only way to stop this is winning. Joe isn’t sure that will happen today.

Let me say I don’t hate GMC but I’m very disappointed with his play. Is he a good player on a terrible defense? Yes. Is he worth the paycheck he is getting? No. Nobody on that crapfest we call our defense deserves that kind of money. I’m sure GMC would be a HOFer on the Seahawks but our team needs to much help. I think we should entertain trade offers, because football is a team game and if getting rid of one really good player can net us a couple solid players maybe the defense wouldn’t suck so bad. Ok now everyone can call me stupid, and go.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

    Ridiculous. –Joe

  3. Bucwylde Says:

    @destro44

I don’t think its stupid at all in fact I think its a fair assessment and as much as I don’t want to deal off what little talent we do have its really a choice of the Devil and the deep blue sea at this point.

  4. denjoe Says:

It should read “National Lovie Hate Intensifies”

  5. This Guy Right Here Says:

Its finally November, guess the Bucs can start playing football now..

  6. HFXBUC Says:

Nobody seems to be on JJ Watt…. Houston’s defence is terrible. Is JJ Watt a bum? Based on how everyone attacks McCoy he is… McCoy is fine….now the other 10

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

They are all jealous of the red spot in his hair. They could never make that statement. Go GMC! Go BUCS!

  8. RJBucnut Says:

Joe what makes all this even more disturbing is usually good teams are good on both sides of the ball. Our O is rolling right now und usually a good offense can spark a defense then winning and making plays becomes contagious. This MFing defense is killing us. There is no heart and no DOGS on this side of the ball. Lavonte is just now starting to get it together but we need more DOGS on the defensive side of the football and until then we’re going to suck donkey nuts!!! Ian Beckles is spot on when he talks about the lack of DOGS on the team. Jamies and Mike Evans hv more mental toughness than anyone on the defense!

  9. Jim Palm Harbor Says:

And who should replace him? I do not want to hear he is injury prone. When no one else is getting the job done, GMC has to do more than his share to make up for the duds on the line. He is playing with an injury & still playing his a$$ off. The real problem is the coach not making adjustments to get the D to play as a team.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why use the word hate?…….it seems to be used here all of the time and IMO, it is inappropriate. It’s very difficult to hate someone you don’t know.

A person can be disappointed and not like the way a player plays or acts and still not hate them.

GMC is a victim of being a part of a losing team…is he contributing to that….probably…..”It’s as simple as that”

  11. JAB83 Says:

Has everything to do with him being an out spoken Christian.

    Simple as That.

People want to see what they want to see…

    Simple as That.

Its a different day, use to be role models like GMC where praised and lived up. His positives would far out way his negatives even by today’s standards. However now a days people prefer to dwell on the negatives much more regardless. I call them Fans of Depression and Trolls…

Making a mountain out of a Mole hill.

Really, Its as simple as that.

Here is to everyone focusing on the positive today and injecting some Inspiration from the twelth man role… Be a Fan of Inspiration and do your part for the team today….

31-17 BUCS in a shocker over the tweetie birds of Atlanta…

  12. Isaias Says:

GMC is still the man! His play has declined since his injury a few weeks ago, his line is full of duds, his coach is a dud that will die by his scheme and will not put his stars in position to succeed. One player can carry the load if you scheme correctly to make him successful. GMC gets triple/double teamed mauled on every play. They constantly hold him put him in head locks and the works. Never a flag, never any adjustments from Locke to help 93. That tells me his scheme is killing his best players due to lack of support from everyone around him. I bet on another squad he would be he would be breaking records. Just my thoughts on the hate!

  13. JAB83 Says:

    *praised and LIFTED up

  14. JackinJersey Says:

Listen Buc fans lets be honest with ourselves; Lovie’s going the worst job of NFL coaching this side of Rich Kottite. Someone at 1 Buc Pl. needs to remind the coach that it’s not 1997 anymore. Oh,and the Mad Dog is right.

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Joe…

“HATE” is a very strong word to use

People don’t hate GMC…..more dislike the fact that he runs his mouth as the leader of this team….but disappears is games….especially when he’s needed most.

He’s getting paid and he’s acting like “the man”…..but yet the fans don’t see it???

…..plus he’s ALWAYS hurt every year and that’s the excuse for his play every year.

Fans are just tired of it

  16. Lou. Says:

    @Destroyo:

Doesn’t work. At least not here.

See: Revis, Darrell; Talib, Aquib (with extenuating circumstances); Blount, LaGarett. And the bear goes on.

Seems like the only way to become a good football team is to put together a group of high-quality players. Trading quality players away has been, um UNWISE.

  17. 911bucs Says:

The only thing I heard in that was “When is Lovie going to get fired”. I mean he has huge ones to just say ok Frasier take a seat I got this. I bet Leslie is laughing his a$$ off.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

I will now take a very brief break from my boycott of all things Bucs.

Enjoy the game today everyone. As for me, I won’t be watching it until Lovie is FIRED!

I personally would rather clean all the tile floors in my house with a toothbrush than watch Lovie’s defense play. I feel bad for the rest of you that have to be subjected to the torture that you’ll witness once again today.

Go Bu…..no no no Go Glazers Fire Lovie and I’ll come back.

  19. Doc Says:

    Tell him to make plays.

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

    ITS THE RETURN OF BUC1987!!!!!

Happy Sunday!!!!! and good health to you!!! just remember, take deep breathes and say ummmmmmm, ommmmmmmmm over and over again!!!

Its the race to 8!!! thats right, 8 losses and lovie is a career losing coach!!!

  21. Clodhopper Says:

    87,

You of all people, how can you not enjoy watching just because of Jameis? Maybe it’s because I’m not a Noles fan and never watched him in college, but I’m just amazed by him. Watching this guy grow as rapidly as he is eases a lot of what Lovie is doing to the defense.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s because most Bucs fans are idiots. I would be in favor of trading him for 2-3 first rounders, but I have no confidence that Jason Licht is capable of pulling off a great trade.

  23. Tampa Tony Says:

No hate just want him to earn his enormous salary

  24. Clodhopper Says:

Some peole actually expect a leader to lead and tackle to tackle. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

87… I knew you would be back quickly, so did everybody else. Once a fan you are stuck man, good or bad. You ain’t watching because you’ll be listening on the radio.

  26. JAB83 Says:

Hey GMC, this is what you say.

“This is a new season, teams know what to expect when they play us, and that’s why it’s a challenge each and every year. I take responsibility as the leader of this team [and] I have to be better.”

Steven Stamkos; of the soon to be losing Tampa Bay Lightning club… Soon after that to be the Trolls and Fans of Depression next target of hatred…

Just show up and do your job the way you can and all this goes to bed… True of any good players performance…

  27. Buccfan37 Says:

What happened to the TV map, I must of missed it and I did.

  28. Mo_Downs Says:

Clickbait: Publish nonsense and get the lemmings to run with it across the web. It then comes back as an urban legend of unknown origin that has no factual basis but gains hundreds of comments and replies.

EX: “McCoy asks for trade” or “McCoy to vacation in North Korea”

It’s a fine example of how to turn a penny into a dime.

  29. Sethb22 Says:

I’ve posted this before but my dislike of McCoy isn’t play related. I don’t like his friendliness in general. Too damn nice. I don’t want the leader of my defense helping opposing players off the ground during a game and patting them on the butt. Derrick Brooks 5 times classier than gmc will ever be and when he ended Rich Gannon’s career he was talking smack at first than realized he was hurt and stepped back. McCoy says he doesn’t need to act like that to get himself up. This may be true but can his teammates feed off of him? I live in MD so watched a lot of Ray Lewis… He wasn’t good the last 3 years but his leadership got the guys around him to play better… In my eyes McCoy doesn’t have that ability to make those around him better and that’s why it’s time to move on. Football isn’t a nice guy game on the field… We need more scumbags. Lol

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Upset with your teams play and critical does not equate to hate. I have not read one fans comment that says they hate the Bucs. What are you even talking about?

  31. DB55 Says:

Kaufman: Chris, he is facing constant double-teaming. Double-teaming
    **********************
This is just not true! Why wouldn’t a professional know this? Sad.

  32. John Herb Says:

GMC is the best player on a crappy D. With that being said, when you embrace the role of “LEADER” and you sign a shiny new $30,000,000.00 dollar contract, it is expected that you perform. I am in a management position and I make a BIT less than GMC. If I don’t produce and inspire, I am out of a job regardless of my supporting cast. Leaders get the job done! I hope Lovie was right and real football starts in November because what we’ve seen so far this year has not been football.
( Salary written out with all “0’s” for dramatic effect )

  33. DB55 Says:

    87

You right bro, I decided to go to the happiest place on earth today to celebrate the princess birthday. Have fun watching the game ya. Lol

  34. LargoBuc Says:

Russo just needs someone to blame and criticize. Just another national windbag. No real knowledge of whats going on with our team. But its just Tampa, so misguided generalities are not only accepted, but encouraged.

  35. M It Smyth Says:

I still think it’s the defense Lovie is running. Ask yourself this: if Dan Quinn was running this defense would it allow 30 points a game? I really don’t think so. I hope the Bucs keep the offensive coordinator and at the very least bring in a defensive coordinator next year. If they fire Lovie after this year and get rid of Koetter it will set back the entire offense and I don’t think they’ve been that bad given that they’re starting rookies at QB,LT and RG. The defense needs a different scheme. One that is relevant to today’s NFL. Sure the Bucs need a couple real corners but overall there is enough talent to not allow 30 points a game. That’s my opinion.

  36. JMN Says:

I don’t get the feeling that bucs fans expect GMC to he a HOF. Most just want him to make a play when it counts…i.e. make a sack on Cousins on the final drive of last weeks game (would have been nice). ANd for the amount of money he is making it is expected every now and then. Unfortunately, it rarely happens.

  37. Sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

He disappears in games. Tolerate him until we can replace him.

  38. Broy34WantsHardyornowatch Says:

I hate you people. Absolutely despise you people. He’s only leading DT’s in sacks. We cry for sacks we get them and cry some more. The same losers said Winston was a busy are now saying GMC is overrated. Just go jump off a bridge cuz none of you are capable of excitement. Even against the Jags it was”oh we played the Jags” who gives an F we won the damn game. This is football people get a damn life and be appreciative we have the luxury of even watching football. The stuff goin on in the world and at 7:00 am you’re calling for our best players head. I hope u all choke on wings watching the game today

  39. rayjay1122 Says:

Right there with ya 87 and DB55. I am checked out as well until Smith is gone. I won’t watch this product anymore. Still a Bucs fan but wont support ineptitude any longer. It is delusional to even think the Bucs have any remote chance of winning today. It is laughable to think they will even compete. I will gladly eat crow if they prove me wrong but I highly doubt I will have to since the Bucs are going to be suffocated by Falcon. So, it is a nice day outside so maybe I will take advantage of that and actually enjoy my day. For those who are going to waste 3 hours of your lives that you can never get back….you have my sympathy.

  40. JMN Says:

    @Broy34WantsHardyornowatch

Garbage time sacks. Were any of GMC’s sacks made during a pivotal point of the game when a stop needed to be made? Maybe one at the most.

  41. Ray Rice Says:

I don’t hate Aunt Geraldine. The MF just needs to stop yappin’ and do something. DO SOMETHING! I don’t expect him to get 3 sacks a game. Just get one when it counts. Make your presence felt dammit! No one is scared of him. And NO he doesn’t get double teamed all game. That’s a crock of shhhhit. That’s an easy cop out of an argument to make. He’s getting paid like a stud. He should be expected to perform like one. But he’s too worried about Jameis being a leader when he should be worried about his own dammm self.

  42. DB55 Says:

    Ray

He reminds me of Kevin Nash in “the longest yard”.

  43. Clint Says:

Nothing to hate really… he just doesn’t do much. Too quiet for the huge salary. Doesn’t cause enough ruckus on the field. That is just the fact.

  44. Bucfan77 Says:

Did the Bucs grossly over pay GMC yep,is he a great player nope,is he on a terrible defense yep,do he get doubled on most plays nope, can he turn it around yep,but can lovie get this defense as a whole turned around nope, should lovie be fired this year well maybe,But hate c’mon Joebuc ,do I agree Nope.

  45. Please Says:

I love that all the GMC hate comes from the most unqualified blowhards.

  46. Ray Rice Says:

    @DB

I was thinking more like Switoski (Bob Sapp). But Sgt. Englehart is a good fit too. LMFAO. Especially when he starts congratulating the convicts on the field after a good play. LMFAO

  47. Couch Fan Says:

Lovie’s 81% losing percentage and climbing suggests we will remain a laughing stock until he is gone.

  48. DefenseRules Says:

Hey Joe, did you see GMC on that last OT play. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? Bet ya that Mad Dog Russo is really upset right now.

  49. loggedontosay Says:

Mad Dog see what the problem is. I believe Ira sees the problem as well, but he diverted by babbling and rambling. Ira’s statement makes no sense. If McCoy is not or cannot be Mean Joe Green and John Randal, he is getting paid to much.

  50. Terrance from philly Says:

When you sign for 98 million and have never had a double digit sack season some hate is warranted
