“I Understand”

Talks expectations.

Talks expectations.

Today, Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy held court, per his custom on Thursdays. With a fire of fan unrest simmering about his play, GMC talked about expectations.

Midway through his talk, he was asked if he understood why fans are harping on him and Lavonte David to make meaningful splash plays.

GMC responded, “I understand.” But when prodded for more, he wouldn’t elaborate. However, a few moments earlier, GMC spoke about higher expectations.

“Being two of the best players on our own team, we have to carry the weight,” GMC said. “Not just your teammates, but your organization [which] expects you to play at a certain level.”

Earlier in the year, GMC was playing at that level, at one time leading all defensive tackles in sacks. Since, GMC has been virtually invisible, with four tackles total in his past four games.

Joe is pretty sure GMC’s shoulder is hurting him more than he or the Bucs are letting on. How else to explain the sudden and dramatic drop off in production the past few weeks?

I for one will not get on him. He’s the best DL they have. He is injured and he expects more of himself, he knows it, so I don’t get the point of pilong on.

  2. Tiny Tim Says:

It is simple. Leading DTs in sacks does not mean you are playing well. I do not understand why the Joes do not understand this. Koetter said it this week. He does not need stats to tell him what his eyes see. Joe you saw a sack/stat. Most fans that are critical of McCoy saw the other 80 snaps where he was invisible. Hooray!!! He got a sack somewhere in the second quarter, but he had no pressures for the other snaps surrounding the sack. I can care less about a single sack here and there. I am looking for constant terror. You know, being great!!!

You are totally right dave. Is it some mystery that after Mccoy visibly hurt his shoulder that his play has diminished? If he didn’t play and told everyone he was injured then everyone would call him a puss. He’s stuck between a rock and hard place. Sit out and get verbally abused, or tough it out at 70% and still get verbally abused.

I still think this is just a question of degree.

GMC is obviously a very good player but he is being paid “great” money and his been labeled face of the franchise.

Too many of us are going overboard. No he doesn’t suck and yes he’s probably hampered by an injured shoulder. But his entire career has been like this. He can be very good, he’s an all pro, but he’s been inconsistent. Still he has played pretty well at times….just not great…and lately not even very good…perhaps good at the best.

Bottom line is that he is being played to be the best player on the team or at minimum the best on defense…he simply is not that player. Good but not great. No shame other than all the $$$$ the Bucs spent for him to be great not just good.

I give GMC some credit for the Atlanta win when he had Ryan’s leg on the final play.

Correct, but the other 79 plays he did nothing. He has to do better than that.

Playing injured is a big deal and I give credit where credit is due. GMC not having significant help off the edges also doesn’t help him. I just wish that ASJ would play injured and at less then 100% like McCoy does.

To me, this quote says it all:

“Being two of the best players on our own team, we have to carry the weight,”

Now, this is my very first comment on JBF, but Ive been reading for years. That quote Pissed. Me. Off. It is true, he is one of the best on the team but when a player KNOWS how good he is, he stops trying. Sort of like when a hot woman KNOWS how hot she is…she doesn’t have to try, she can just stand there and get attention. GMC needs to be taken down a peg or two. Some young upstart needs to outplay him, give him some humility back, Dude ain’t hungry anymore.

  9. Ray Rice Says:

Dam right the organization wants you to play better MF! The fans do too. You haven’t done $hit! Just talk, talk, talk…… and talk some more.

It’s always funny to read the comments from all the “Never was” and so called Bucs Fans. Most of you couldn’t penetrate a Capri Sun with detailed instructions, yet you jump online and criticize a player about his craft. News flash if you knew more than him or the coaches, you would be getting paid to do it rather then sitting on the couch at home pining for the glory days that you never actually had.

Well I am sorry that you have watched football for many years (even if you have not played it) and you do not know the difference between a good player and great player. Don’t get upset with others because you are confused at what you are watching on the field. That sounds like a personal problem to me. You are correct, I have never played football before but I do know the difference between Joe Montana and Joe Flacco. I am so sorry you can not tell the difference. Here is a suggestion, the bucs have this promotion called RED where they provide insight of how the game of football works. Maybe you should look into that.

  12. VaBchBucsFan Says:

    Tiny Tim,

I very much understand football and the complexities associated, considering I actually played through college. Am I disappointed with the play of GMC so far this season? Yes, but I understand that playing injured changes the dynamic of play and limits the things you are able to do to dominate consistently. Though I would not expect that level of understanding from someone like you who has never played the sport and only seeks to tear down everyone in your path to feel better about it.

  13. Tiny Tim Says:

Obviously you did not play through college as you claim. If you did you would sound more educated. And what does college have to do with the NFL? All NFL players say that there is no one that is 100% and everyone is injured, but you want to give McCoy a pass? You think McCoy is the only player playing with an injury? He is good but not great. And I do not know what McCoy you have been watching over the years. He has never dominated consistently another clue you did not play in college. This is who he always is. And stop lying about playing in college. Its not a good look!!
