Authentic Jameis

November 6th, 2015
Jameis is Jameis.

Jameis is Jameis.

Leave it to Peter King of theMMQB.com to finally fess up to the trap he and so many others got caught up in last offseason.

The easily-offended, thin-skinned and, in large part, non-football fans screamed their throats hoarse for what a horrible mistake the Bucs were making in selecting America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.

As King noted, while so, so many were fixated on the white noise of his celebrity, people forgot or simply glossed over the fact Jameis is one helluva football player.

In the past few days, Joe has heard from many people that Jameis is Jameis. Whether it be Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter or Eli Manning or even Jameis’ teammates, the guy at Florida State is the same guy leading the Bucs. Only now Jameis is wiser, WDAE-AM 620 personality, the czar of local sports radio, J.P. Peterson writes.

But the stuff you can’t measure is much more important when it comes to being a quarterback in the NFL…the leader and face of a billion dollar franchise. Leadership qualities like competitive fire, emotional intelligence, authenticity, work ethic, talent, poise under fire, raising your game in the biggest moments and perhaps, most importantly, showing your teammates you will do anything to win. In Atlanta, Jameis checked all the boxes.

… Jameis stepped in front of his team pre-game and emotionally challenged them to play for “our brother in pain” LB Kwon Alexander. Kwon’s 17 year old brother was murdered Friday night. Jameis certainly couldn’t do something like this Week 1.

Veteran Center Joe Hawley, who played with Matt Ryan and the Falcons the past five seasons, says it significantly changed the level at which the Bucs played.

“We’ve seen it at FSU that’s the kind of guy he is.” said Hawley. “You can tell when he talks its really genuine, from the heart and really emotional. When a guy talks like that you really respect it. He’s a great leader, he’s really competitive and he continues to grow.”

Look, Joe doesn’t expect Jameis to play like Dan Marino. Remember, Jameis is a rookie. Even Koetter noted how he has to pass the ball better.

Jameis will continue to have ups and downs. Joe wouldn’t be shocked if Jameis has a couple of turnovers Sunday. The turnover-less streak has to stop sometime, right? Just the law of averages.

But for the first time since Jeff Garcia played behind center for the Bucs, Joe is completely and totally comfortable with the guy leading the offense

No, we just want him to be a rookie, know his roll, don’t worry about being a leader we have plenty of leaders on this team he should just enjoy his rookie season and just be thankful he gets to play in the NFL.

  4. mike10 Says:

JP is voicing my sentiments exactly.

Talent and game play aside, I love the player JW is: winning mentality, cerebral, positive, upbeat, and a leader not just by voice (although certainly from the heart) but through actions… and a lil bit of swag… something this team has long gone without. We just need to look in this upcoming draft for that same culture development on the defense.. someone that demands the D’s attention and says “f this, were done sucking ass and they aint driving down the field on us!”

  5. Tnew Says:

Would love to know an honest response now from the people who said the “rah rah college bullspit that he did in FSU won’t work in the NFL”

Looks pretty good to me. Mindset is something that is learned over years of teaching and training. Jameis, has shown an ability to maintain a growth mindset over tremendous challenges. It seems that no situation happens that he doesn’t try to learn from. This is infectious. His attitude, work hard, lead by example, take chances and have fun will take him to the very top of the league.

The comparisons to Freeman, Leftwich and Russell were at best lazy, at worst racist. I hope his development continues. I see no reason to doubt it.

  6. Espo33618 Says:

Garcia was a huge mistake! It’s not like the jury was out on him. We all knew what type of qb he was. Win in the regular season and melt when faced with a decent defense.

Also, Joe, I do not want to share my phone’s GPS with you. It’s weird.

  9. Brandon Says:

In 2010, I was pretty darn happy and excited about what we had at QB. At worst, Freeman was a top 10 QB (okay, maybe number 10) with an extremely bright future. It was an awesome feeling just knowing you had one of the NFL’s best and would only get better and better as the years went by… I’m not there yet with Jameis… but I am satisfied at this point and time.

  11. LargoBuc Says:

I loved watching Garcia lead this offense. Ill never forget that Chargers game. Garcia strped up, blood pouring down his face while screaming the verbiage out to run the huddle in the heat of battle. We lost that game but man, ill never forget that. What a warrior.
As for Jameis, I am thrilled thus far. He improves every week be it on the stat sheet or intangibly. He seems very durable and Im so happy we got him to grow into a leader. The leader we never had at qb.

  12. cmurda Says:

I guess I’m in the minority for this upcoming game because I’m calling a Bucs win. As DB55 would say “screenshot this”.

I confess that I started out a Mariota lover, and a Jameis hater. Count me among the converted. Jameis has won me over with his personality, his winning attitude, and his demonstrated ability to improve his game and win.

Jason Licht knows what he’s doing.

I’d like to say Bucs win but we tend to play better on the road for some reason.
I have zero faith in our DB’s and that scares me. It is all going to boil down to how long we can keep Eli off of the field. I believe we’ll score points but I know how quickly our defense can let the other team back into the game. I’ve seen
24-0 and 17-3 evaporate in the last two weeks. To me this one is a toss up but it’s for this very reason that the Bucs will probably win and win handily. They are due to win back to back games and I believe this will be the week. Bucs win 34-24

    “Buc1987 Says:

So say you were one of those EXTREMELY rare Buc fans that actually were a fan since 1976 you got me by what 11 years? BFD. When I became a fan in 1987 there was maybe 3,000 fans in the stands. I guess you were one of the 3,000 fans. WTF ever.

If you were here during the Jameis debates, you might understand my need to gloat on occasion. I actually could care less what you think. I do my thing, you do yours. Quit crying, do you need a tissue?

    Keep throwing acorns little squirrel….

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Good lord this dude has issues. You want to sit next to me at a game and see who loses his voice first? See how much noise you can make compared to me. I doubt you could even match what I do. I take metal beer cans and rap them against the seats left and all game long while hollering. Yes my voice is gone by halftime. Not hoarse, but gone!

BTW…I was 6 years old and living on Cape Cod in 1976. I certainly don’t think I’m a better fan than anyone. How you could get that from anything I post is beyond me. My autistic daughter is smarter than you.

Jiminny Christmas. One side I got OneLovie and Jab83 not calling me a Buc fan at all and the other side I got this bozo saying that I act like too big of a fan and bigger than anyone else.

This fan base is demented and it’s starts with this guy.

How often do I gloat, really? Like once a month out of the 487 posts I make in a month. I went through the Winston battles, I have the scars to prove it. I’m entitled to post what ever I want. I could just go away, and you know what, you would miss me.

  35. cmurda Says:

87, relax man. Don’t take him so personally. McAlpinMike if you were on the site more often you would realize that 87 isn’t arrogant. Every once in a while we all have to toot our horns. I know I’m wrong more than I care to admit so I have to take advantage when I’m right. I called Winston and then 2 weeks in I was questioning myself as Mariota was all the talk. In week 9, Mariota can’t even hold Jameis jock. I was also calling for Johnny Football the prior year. U still think Johnny is going to be a solid QB but he’s nothing compared to Jameis. I’m so pumped that the future looks bright at the Qb position. Not fake bright like Freeman’s one and done season. JW has the will, the desire, the leadership, the intangibles and the skills. We should be celebrating instead of hating just like we will be celebrating Sunday evening after we wipe the Ray Jay turf with the G Men.

  36. McAlpinMike Says:

People like you never get it. Read your post back to yourself. You seem to be full of yourself. And to mention your autistic daughter, especially referring to her intelligence….classless. People with autism can have quite high IQ’s. You, doubtful. Yankee go home, PLEASE. Oh and I’ll be in section 110, row E, seat 7. Come call me Pumpkin or Bozo!

You are a bozo. It says so in your postings. I tell no lies.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

Okay I’m 16 when I moved to Florida. Not by choice. My dad’s lived here since 1972 I came to see him quite often most of my summers in fact. Since I’m 45 now that makes nearly 30 years I lived in the south. Well over 1/2 of my life.

It’s you people that were born and raised here that have a problem. Not me. This is America. If I want to live in California or Florida or Idaho I have the right to do so. I have that right because the YANKEE’s won the war. Why did they win the war? Because you southerners were weak as F.

You also have the right to move wherever you want to as well. I’m not one of those “yankees” that come down here and tell you how we did things up north.

Hey Joe were you born and raised in Florida your whole life? I don’t think so. Maybe Joe should pack his bags too and move back up north.

Says yet another poster we never see in here. Do you have an actual point to your post or are you just spouting off at the mouth like the other guy? Do you think I will EVER leave this site? Do you think it’s possible that if I’m so annoying, that you might be able to just skip right over my posts? Or is it you that’s the ignorant one for reading such posts by a person that annoys you? I’m pretty sure it’s the latter. If you went to Florida schools don’t get that confused with the word ladder, they’re not the same thing.

And you are also a pure kiss ass or suck up too. Why do you feel it necessary to glom onto the joes the way you do. Are you really that afraid that you might offend them and get barred from this site. Have you ever considered what you might do with your life if you weren’t always posting here. As far as Jameis goes only you and half the country had him rated as your top player. I also believed he would stay out of trouble his rookie year. I just worried about his second year and years thereafter. It is still way too early to celebrate. We have nothing more than hope for a bright future.

Okay squirrel. I don’t even know why I’m addressing you, but I will. I have TWO special needs children one that is autistic and one that was born with muscular dystrophy. My wife can’t handle the stress of them anymore, so she goes to work and I take care of our children. Since I have taken upon the burden of such a task I have been forced to move MY business to HOME. I WORK from HOME. Do they get benefits? NO we make too much money. Is that understandable now for ya? Just like the other squirrels if you don’t like what I type then simply skip over it. I skip over LOTS of posters on here. It’s not very hard to do. Apparently it is though as squirrels like yourself keep throwing acorns at me.

Walk a freaking DAY in my shoes. I bet you wouldn’t last an hour in my house.

  46. Buc1987 Says:

It also might help if some of you squirrels had a slight sense of humor too. When I say things like are you jealous of me and don’t hate me because I’m beautiful. It has nothing to do with being vain and everything to do with joking around.

Yes while the children are in school I have a lot of free time on my hands, but many times they don’t even go to school. My wife works at night and I work from my desk. The very same desk I am typing from right now. So glad you got into my personal life by trying to insult me. Stop by the house some time and see how chaotic it actually is. See how I will be taking care of these children for the rest of my life. Changing diapers when my kid gets into her 20’s and 30’s and so on. Would you like to trade places with me?

  47. stvcl Says:

Count me as one that wanted Mariota here mostly because of his unbelievable streak of 353 passes without an interception in college. Dude took care of the football. Had to accept Jameis after the draft because what the heck I’m a Bucs fan we make huge first round mistakes all of the time. Of course after the first game I was thinking “Damn I KNEW it.” How was I to know the leadership qualities of Jameis? Training camp opens and the kid is there greeting everyone as they come in. I’ve watched over the season as he, a rookie, becomes the infacto team leader. That is fricking awesome and we should all give a sigh of relief that FINALLY we have the quarterback that can take us to the next stage. Well done rookie, well done.

  48. BucfanBF Says:

99% of the posters here are true Bucs fans such as myself. I personally don’t have a problem with what 1987 posts or says. He sounds like a guy who has a passion for his team who is as frustrated with the ineptitude of this team since the gruden era. I think everyone should stop these personal attacks on him and others who have different view points as you. We all have different visions on how the bucs should be built and ran as a team but what I see now is a teM with the arrow ^^^ pointing up. Let’s all just get along because we all have that one common goal concerning the Bucs and that is winning multiple Super Bowls!! Peace brothers and GO BUCS!!!!

  49. TB4Eva Says:

winning the time of possession and turnover margin are the X-Factors against the G-men. I’m praying for long, clock killing drives. I think we can win a low-to moderate scoring game but Idk if Eli and Odell lose two shootouts in two weeks, especially facing a weak defense.

  50. Trubucfan22 Says:

mccoy makes himself look stupid when he says taking on a leadership role as a rookie was a mistake. That it overwhelmed it. That’s because mccoy isn’t really a leader, he’s a talker. Come game day he isn’t the guy rallying the troops and getting the most out of his teammates. Mccoy is a great player, but he is not a true leader. True leaders don’t struggle with being a leader, it just comes naturally.
