“Overreaction” To Secondary Play

October 21st, 2015
Bucs CB thinks fans need to step back from the cliff when discussing the secondary.

Johnthan Banks thinks fans need to step back from the cliff when discussing the secondary.

As Joe already stated this week, though the tenure of Loaf Jennings and Mike Jenkins is short, Bucs fans have about had their fill of the duo as starting corners.

The secondary is getting lit up. Just look at the career day one-armed Jags quarterback Blake Bortles had the last time the Bucs took the field, a Bucs win at that.

If cornerback Johnthan Banks can return from a knee injury this week, then it will go a long way to fixing the secondary.

But Banks thinks fans are needlessly freaking out.

“We really had probably one bad game in the secondary. Everybody is really overreacting,” Banks said. “I mean, the Houston game, maybe. I mean, there was a lot of things we could have done better. But in the Jacksonville game, we kind of shut those guys out. I mean, honestly, they had two or three big pass plays, but I think we played a good game.”

Joe only wishes he could have gotten clarification of “shut those guys out,” and Joe will try to do that today or tomorrow, if Banks is available.

Joe gets that Banks is sticking up for his teammates. But it is hard to digest the Bucs did anything to slow Bortles down a week and a half ago, much less shut the Jags’ receivers out.

Despite the bizarre ESPN stat that shows the Bucs as #3 in Total defense this morning, there is one stat that screams out above all others and that is points allowed. Our avg points per game is second worst in the league. That tells you all you need to know.

  2. meh Says:

    4 touchdowns = shutout.

Ok, buddy, time to get you into the concussion protocol.

  3. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

I’m more worried about this Redskins game than most people are, since we have a history of making the Austin Davis’ & Derek Anderson’s of the World look like All-Pro’s. I mean, what a sad day it will be if we don’t take advantage of this opportunity to get back to .500. We better sack up & win this game.

  4. Strider.... Sec 146 Says:

Uhh top 5 defense ….we are on the verge need Jameis to have a breakout game and turn the corner.

  5. meh Says:

We’re one of the worst in points allowed but 3rd by yards. This is the “break but don’t bend” defense. I think we got it backwards.

  6. Waterboy Says:

They must have Banks pretty heavily medicated for that knee injury.

  7. DallasBuc Says:

More statements from the people on this team that so not comport with reality. I think the only quality coaching coming from incompetent Lovie Smith is his coaching of players to make statements that are clearly untrue and made to make things look much better than they actually are.

  8. ATrain Says:

    WHAT!!!!!!

Coaching should call these two out and sit them..

You think its all on the players and not coaching

Did anyone see what Miami’s Defence looked like last week..

A Coach with fire in his heart brings out the fire in players.

    We have Luke Warm Water

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Much of the points allowed problem is on the offense……turnovers and field position leaving opponents a short field…..therefore….fewer yards but more points.

If the Bucs can fix their pass coverage problems…..we will stay in the top 5….

  10. Tampa Tony Says:

If you truly believe this is a top 5 defense, then you also believe Washington is a top 10 d. They are currently #8.

This soft mentality Loser Lovie brings is carrying over to the players.

Lovie sucks “it’s as simple as that”

  11. R.O Says:

He’s saying if it wasn’t for the last td drive and the big 60 yard play we wouldn’t be having this convo…

  12. Danr Says:

And hes right. Take 4 plays away where guys screwed up and it was a good day by the d.

I disagree with this statement totally. Look no further than the Broncos. They have endured pick sixes and short fields due to Manning’s turnovers but they are not allowing all those points like the bucs. Just because you give up a short field it does not mean you have to let the team drive 40 or 30 yards for a TD. Whatever happen to holding them to a field goal? Oh that that’s right, we are also the worse redzone defense. Whatever happen to us getting a turnover on a short field? That’s right, we only have 2 INTs on the season. You can’t blame the offense for that.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

If you took out all points scored on turnovers by offense the team would be like 8th in scoring defense (or it was last time I did the excersize). I don’t think they are that good but they are closer to average than bottom 3 in the league.

Secondary was terrible in red zone at end of game. If we don’t allow last minute garbage plays then bortles finishes with little over 200 yards. Meanwhile Packers give Rivers 500 yards but don’t give up easy TDs. The few horribly blown coverage plays kills us

  15. Fsuking Says:

I think we need to go to an all defensive backs formation with Gerald McCoy alone on the line and 2 LBs. Thats the only way we can have Loaf of the field for more than a play at a time. And Lovie Smith WILL have Loaf on the field

  16. Fsuking Says:

“But Lovie what about the film?” – Fans

“I hate watching games that have already been played… Takes the fun out of it!” – Lovie

” Ooohhh, that explains alot!?” – Everyone ever

With all the negative comments on the secondary and the defense, below are some positive defense statistics. Maybe, just maybe, the Buccaneers defense is really not that bad?
