Lovie’s Warm Seat Cools

October 11th, 2015
Safe. For now.

Safe. For now.

Bucs fans are giddy. A win at home. Really.

By beating the jughead Jags, the Bucs broke an ugly home losing streak that stretched 11 games dating back to December 2013.

And it was Lovie Smith’s first win as a Bucs coach at home. Now holding a home mark of 1-10. And for the time being, Joe thinks Lovie is safe. For now.

Lovie is hardly out of the woods. Look at the Bucs schedule the rest of the way and three wins might be a tough sell. Joe thinks Lovie probably will return with five wins. With six wins, it is a lock. Four wins and Team Glazer has a hard decision. Three wins and Lovie is in deep doo-doo.

For now, chatter of jettisoning the coach is on ice through the bye week.

As my uncle eloquently put it as loudly as he could during the game, Lovie has his players where they need to be to make a play. The PLAYERS are missing tackles.

  2. OneLove Says:

Let’s be honest, it was NEVER WARM!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “Head Coach of the best NFL team in the state of Florida!!”

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Isn’t Romo injured? If so…we have a chance against the Cowboys. A small chance, but a chance.

  4. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Well said, ESPO’s uncle!

  5. WalkdaPlank Says:

Definitely cooled down, still warm though. Keep up the winning and he’ll be golden. Go Bucs!

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs players should of dumped a bucket of ice water on Lovie after the win.

  7. Walter Says:

The team will improve throughout the season. I expect 6 wins, I think five would keep Lovie secure. Next year I expect to fight for the playoffs

  8. bucrightoff Says:

Even with 6 sacks and 2 turnovers and a TD, defense still got shredded by a bad offense. Offense did their job today so full credit to a good game plan and Doug Martin making it look like a mistake to not pick up his 5th year option.

  9. T in Orlando Says:

rst game all year where i see no issue with the overall coaching. 1 in 5 is not good ratio for well coached games.

I’m happy the team won, rooted for them the entire time, but i still say Lovie has to go. I have no faith, based on his track record, that this is a turning point. This is the exception that proves the rule that Lovie can’t coach in today’s NFL.

    Absolutely agree Epso’s Uncle.

We could’ve won at least one more game if the kicker made his kicks and the defense stop disappearing and missing tackles.

Blaming Lovie is the wrong place for blame unless he’s consistently putting the players in the wrong spot. It’s on the players.

  11. Red86 Says:

    Espo’s uncle^

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our corners were awful today……got penalized on many plays and yet the passes were still completed…..most passes weren’t contested….open recievers all day…..even with some pressure and 6 sacks….our corners played miserably.

We need Banks & Verner back on the field!!!

  13. Matt Says:

Why is Tim Jennings still on the field?

  14. loggedontosay Says:

Joe you and the people that write of Lovie’s demise do not want a coach; you want jesus. You want to walk on water and turn water into wine. After Dominick, Raheem, and Schiano, you expect Lovie to come in and win? The Bucs are rebuilding, and they are off to very good start.

Yes, since he ran off some of the team’s best players with guys he hand-picked (and all either benched, or other teams or at home).

Funny how the evil Schiano and despised Raheem each had better records as Bucs coach than Lovie. Why is Lovie so special he should get a complete and total pass with the second-worst era in Bucs history?

  16. JAB83 Says:

Espo hit the nail on the head…. Players gotta do what they are expected to do… Other than opening day the coaches have put us in position to win…. We need to stay the course with what we have going..
Win lose or draw… We are headed in the right direction…. JBF needs to get off the side of the TROLLS and focus on the X’s and O’s of being true football fans/homers/understanding what is needed to build a long term contender…. We are close… Just need guys to do what they are here to do…. The talent is solid…. Just gotta win baby!!!!

  17. JAB83 Says:

Those coaches and players lacked true professionalism and did not represent Tampa the way we deserve to be represented…. Could give a fart about a few wins a year when people like Greg consider us a “laughing stock” dispute the fact we were not before he decided to blitz on kneel downs when getting beat…. Yeah Joe…. Special is more than a few meaningless wins when your team is full of bad character… Movie is anything but bad character… His team represents Tampa properly and when we start to win it will be that much sweeter and well deserved…. GET RID OF THE FAKE FANS AND TROLLS other wise those losers will continue to drag you and this fan base down…. Just my opinion…. But worth your time to. Consider Joe’s 🙂

4-17 after 21 games….not a very good start even by the lowest of standards. If they win 2 of the next 3 games, then we can talk improvement. But for today it’s a win over one of the 3 worst teams in football, enjoy it for what it is, a badly needed but marginally impressive win.

  19. BucFan20 Says:

Which one of our experts here said last week Carolina could only score on a short field ? Better look at this team this week. Took a defensive score, short field scores, and had to rely on the kicker again and STILL almost Lost To a Garbage Team. So we won the Garbage Bowl Woo Hoo!! Proves nothing other than the Jags are just a bit worse.

  20. This Guy Right Here Says:

Lovin the W, but we need to put a few things in perspective:

-We gave up 31 points…. to Jacksonville
-Our D made Blake Bortles look like Aaron Rodgers (23/33, 303yds, 4TD 1INT)
-The Head of Personnel (Lovie), made the decision to start Jennings over Verner, and Jennings cost us at least 14 points

Through 5 weeks, our offense is the strength of this team, while the D let Jacksonville hang around until the final minute of the game.

One more thing, why the fcuk do we head into the locker room with :30 seconds and 3 timeouts before the half??

Lovie was more afraid of making a mistake, then he was confident that we could put up points… He coaches with a losers mindset, his seat is without a doubt still warm..

On a positive note – Doug Martin, Connor Barth (who fired him in the preseason? we couldve used him the last 4 weeks), Bobby Rainey. ATV’s sack (why has he been on the bench?) HoJo’s 2 sacks. Our players won today in spite of Lovie!

  21. buc4life1979 Says:

    @ Joe
We were one gimpy armed Drew Brees pass play away from being 0-4 heading into todays game. The defense which was touted as supposed to be being the true “strength” of the team heading into this season has as many holes as swiss cheese…WOW, we beat another bad team…BARELY. Why exactly is his seay cooling again?? Someone please explain.

  22. Goodell Must Go Says:

The Glazers held on to Raheem until Gruden’s contract ran out. Schiano’s contract is up in 2016, so if Lovie is back next year he’ll really be on the hot seat.

  23. Tampa Tony Says:

Loser Lovie’s defense still got light up. Badly.

Get 5 or 6 wins show some improvement and come back. 2-3 wins and go back to your basement. Not fake just a fan sick of losing and the conservative coaching

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Joe Says
“Yes, since he ran off some of the team’s best players with guys he hand-picked (and all either benched, or other teams or at home).”

There is no doubt he and LICHT made mistakes in year one. However…they have done a great job in the draft. I believe Jason Licht has more to do with trades and free agency than Lovie…since that is Licht’s actual job.

All of that said…the plan of building through the draft is working out great. And the decision to start with the offense, even though no one thought Lovie could build an offense, was masterful.

There is another element in last year’s free agency too. Tedford. With it being “his offense”, he probably had a lot of input on players in free agency and such. Just a theory.

The free agency moves seem more patchwork than anything else, but the drafts? They have been things of beauty.

Of the 13 draft picks, 11 are still with the team. Of those 11, 6 started in todays game on offense. That’s pretty amazing.

  25. M It Smyth Says:

Wasn’t it the Great Lovie Smith that went into the halftime lockerroom with 3 timeouts in his back pocket after mis-managing the clock? Just curious…. The guy is lacking the killer instinct that’s inherent in the great coaches in this league. In a close game would Bill Belicheck screw around and burn clock then happily run off the sideline with all his timeouts unused? I think not.

  26. M It Smyth Says:

It’s taken Dan Quinn exactly 5 games as a first time head coach to surpass Lovies win total over a 21 game span. Unacceptable in my eyes.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

Joe they might go 4-12 if my prediction holds true. I predicted 5-11, but that was including a win over the Titans. They didn’t get that win. We’ll see.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Yikes I forgot the Saints game cancels that out, because I had that as a loss. So perhaps 5-11 is still play for me.

  29. Tampa Tony Says:

Redskins, Bears, Saints, Rams and possibly the Cowboys backups are winnable games. Win 3 of those you are 5-11 win 2 and you are 4-12. Dude needs progress, and no more blowouts!!! Heat isn’t off until there is consistency

  30. LargoBuc Says:

I thought Lovie did want to go for it. And then we had a penalty, which turned a first and ten on jacsons 45 into a first and 15 on our own 35. IDK perhaps decisions like that are art of the reason Jameis finished with no turnovers. And we won. Just a thought.

  31. Joe Says:

Why exactly is his seay cooling again?? Someone please explain

    Because Lovie got a win.

  32. Jason McLaurin Says:

Lovie Smith isn’t the problem. The defense overall has been much better on assignment and accountability since he has taken over. I approved and appreciate the Glaser family hiring him im all for them sticking it out beyond this year with him and will fight for him until the end to stay in Tampa. I think this team did a tremendous job to rally around him. Hey 2 wins already i see things going up for him but now the staff thats coaching with him is taking flight and developing. All the fans say 6 wins and keeps his job in which I see a streak coming anyway but take in mind he took over a football team that was slower as far, as team speed than waa to his liking and hes been right on the money all the way. He stuck with Banks because of his height and he was right. He picked up Jennings not for being lockdown but being able to contest on every play unlike Verner and Jenkins still has good football and is a for sure tackler in the secondary. Today I think he found his juice in dialing plays for LVD. I expect more of David blitzes to be called leading to more sacks for he and McCoy. I like the potential od those two blitzing and getting sacks in Lovie Smith defense. LVD needs the freedom amongst the scheme and I think he earned the right to have it today. The numbers will pick up drastically after the bye week if they stay aggressive with David and keep McCoy sold on the pasts rush with surrounding great run defenders around him up front and in the secondary###play4WINSton###fight4LOViE
