“Have To Make Some Plays”

Bucs CB Mike Jenkins and the Bucs secondary cannot continue to let receivers run free like coyotes in Pinellas County.

Mike Jenkins and the Bucs’ secondary cannot continue to let receivers run free like coyotes in Pinellas County.

If Lovie Smith is watching gametape of his defense — and we know he is — then he must be galled.

That is the suggestion from the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman, of The Tampa Tribune.

In a recent TBO.com podcast with Olivia Stacey, Kaufman said Lovie must be nauseated by the way the secondary is playing.

“For every silver lining there are a couple of clouds,” Kaufman said in the aftermath of the first Bucs home win in 22 months. “They have to get the defense in order. They lead the league in most points allowed. That has to be particularly galling for a coach from the defensive side like Lovie Smith. He is ceiling the defensive signals, he is picking the defensive players and the schemes.

“The secondary hasn’t been very good Olivia, it just hasn’t. You wonder if Verner will be pushed back into that starting role. They have to make some plays.

“I finally noticed (McDougald). They have to get their act together, especially when the pass rush is getting six sacks.

That is a helluva point by eye-RAH! For how many stinking years have we all bellyached for a pass rush and when the Bucs finally get one last week, the secondary gets blowtorched by a one-armed quarterback?

You can’t blame a lack of a pass rush for Blake Bortles tossing four touchdowns. Imagine what a decent quarterback could do?

Johnthan Banks cannot come back soon enough.

We’re a good football team as much as anything else. Our fans know we’re on the verge. It’s not about the future. It’s always about the future. Kinda simple as that.

The Redskins are better than they were last year. This will be a tough game to get a win. This is a difficult game to get a feel for, yet I expect the Bucs to play well.

The team has been so inconsistant who knows which team will show up against the skins. So far we seem to be a bit better than the worst teams in the league, so the improved redskins should offer a good test. Having said that, we have had two games this year that the defensive line (actually defense in general) didn’t show up. If the whole team shows up to play, it could be a turning point kind of game for us or we could keep the same pattern of inconsistancy and get our butts handed to us again. With our crappy secondary, we will probably need to score in the 30s to win.

As much as you blame the secondary for the points you have to give them the credit for covering long enough to get the sacks. It goes hand in hand. The other team is paid to play to. Let the season play out and be happy we’re playing competitively. This is a 2-14 team last year, were improving rapidly! I’m excited to see how this season plays out. Go Bucs!

I’m expecting us to play well against the Skins….but then again…I always expect us to play well…only to be disappointed. We need to fix this secondary and quickly…..recievers are wide open….and most passes aren’t contested….epecially over the middle.

There are some silver linings with our defense but unfortunately #28 Jennings is a huge storm cloud. I want to believe L.Smith is knowledgeable in good defense but how he chooses to evaluate talent and start guys who obviously stink is beyond my comprehension. Maybe someone smarter than me can enlighten me on that. Seriously, from what my eyes saw last week, Jennings should never start for us ever again when there is a healthy alternative.

Amazingly enough, we have been fairly consistent on the road so far 5is season… Our Defense has been beaten up for sure…. I don’t like to make excuses for myself let alone other people but perhaps Jennings is better than the film that don’t lie shows… He did after all miss time due to injury and is learning how to play with a group of new guys….. That said the clock has run out on his adjustment time frame… I am call it a week in advanced… He will have his best game as a Bug with a pick six and a dominating performance and Movie will say that is what we expect from him… Simple as that… Banks will come back the following week Hopefully and take Jenkins spot and suddenly we will have the D we want in place for the doh doh birds… Would be sweet to have ASJ back for that game as well to help run our winning streak to 3 games and put us 1out of the division lead!!!! BELIEVE IN THIS BUCS FANS!!!! It WILL HAPPEN!!! SHOULD HAPPEN AND CAN HAPPEN!!! THEIFS ARE SOON TO TURN TOO… No more excuses just wins baby!!!! 😉

LOL – windshield – meet Bug

  9. Johnny "America's Commenter" Dejay Says:

The Redskins are very beatable if the Bucs follow their renewed Dungy-ball formula. Rush the passer, pound the running game, and make sure that Jameis only throws short screen passes where his liabilities will be less of a factor.

  10. Pickgrin Says:

Perhaps it is true that Jennings is better than what he showed against the Jags (he better be because he absolutely sucked last week).

Either way – there’s no chance you can convince me that he is better than Verner.
Same goes for Jenkins. J&J were good enough to beat out Leonard Johnson, but that’s where it ends. Tape shows Jennings is our 4th CB and Jenkins is our 5th CB talent wise.

Banks and Verner should be our starters with Sterling Moore handling the Nickle position – simple as that…

Anything other than that and Lovie is not doing what is best for this team.

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

rayjay1122… I read your post a bit back about your screen name being a combination of you and your wife’s name, and the date you got married I believe. I understand it’s a special day for you. Whenever I see that date I immediately think about the event in Dallas in 1963, and have every year since that date.

  12. Bucnut2 Says:

Johnny- I agree. Our best chance to win is running, screens passes checkdowns and an occasional shot downfield to ME, VJ, ASJ

  13. bucsbedabest Says:

Some people believe that Alterraun Verner is best in the slot because of his run stopping abilities? That will leave Johnthan Banks and Tim Jennings to start. There should be no excuses for the Skins game with the amount of time the secondary has to prepare. What is wrong with Tim Jennings? He played in the Pro Bowl in 2012 and 2013 and was rated 23rd overall CB, by PFF last year. Jennings did not suffer the injury while he was playing. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in February of this year. Jennings had his knee scoped. Doctors call the procedure a “simple clean out.” Most arthroscopic knee surgeries involving being scoped require just a two- to three-month recovery period. The Bears thought this knee surgery would help the play of of Jennings, however he struggled in pre-season this year. Hopefully Jennings will return to the player he used to be. If he continues to get burned Lovie will need to make a change before the defense gives up another game.
