Gameday Tampa Bay

October 11th, 2015

Game 5

Jags (1-3) at Bucs (1-3)

Kickoff: 1 p.m.

TV: WTSP-TV Channel 10; DirecTV Channel 711.

Radio: Buccaneers Radio Network (WDAE-AM 620 and WFUS-FM 103.5 in Tampa-St.Petersburg region); SiriusXM Channel 108.

Weather: Excellent weather. Per Accuweather.com, tailgaters will enjoy sunny skies and temperatures in the high-70s to low-80s. At kickoff, look for 84 degrees. There could be a thunderstorm late in the first half but other than that, perfect football weather the rest of the way.

Odds: Per FootballLocks.com, Bucs -3.

Outlook: In his 22-month tenure as Bucs coach, Lovie Smith faces his most important game. Lovie, (3-17, 0-10 at home) is facing a career crossroads If he losses to the jughead Jags at home, a woebegone franchise if there ever was one, it is very possible that Lovie will not coach the Bucs next year. It’s likewise for his counterpart, Jags coach Gus Bradley. The loser likely will be updating his resume. Oh, Lovie can still turn things around to save his job. But what through 20 games (and untold personnel gaffes) suggests Lovie can or will turn things around other than blind hope? There is no evidence to suggest he will. Time is ticking. That is why this game is so important. The bye week is next week. After that, Joe only sees three potential wins, and that is a slight stretch. Joe isn’t sure four wins is enough for Lovie to return. Since 2003, only three coaches (Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spagnuolo and Lovie) survived guiding their teams to the worst record in the NFL. Joe cannot think of the last time a coach survived pulling off that stunt in consecutive seasons. The Jags, with the possible exception of the Bears, are the worst team the Bucs will play the rest of the season. Lovie already owns the second-worst record of any Bucs coach through his first 20 games. A loss today to the Jags, and Joe isn’t sure how Lovie can climb out of that hole.

Nuggets: DT Gerald McCoy is tied with second-most sacks by a defensive tackle this season with three. Only Aaron Donald has more (3.5). … OLB Lavonte David is second in the NFL in tackles (462) since the start of 2012. … WR Vincent Jackson has the eighth-most yards receiving (3,902) since the beginning of 2012. … RB Doug Martin is tied with Ricky Bell for fourth place in Tampa Bay history with most 100-yard games (eight). … Jags WR Allen Hurns has caught at least one pass in his last 20 games. … Blake Bortles is 10th in the NFL in passing yards with 996. …  T.J. Yeldon has the third-most carries of any running back with 70. … Jags LBs Paul Posluszny (39) and Telvin Smith (38) are fourth and fifth, respectively, in the NFL this season in tackles.

I’ll go with the blind hope or like Mr Magoo the near blind stumbling into things hope. I still think the Bucs will pick off Bortles and somehow come out on top. It’s a nice day to get a home win. Bring one home to the eyesight challenged. Let’s Go Bucs!!!
