Where Was Diversified Offense?

Funny. The Titans ran a version of the read-option, the nickel-and-dime offense that has spread throughout college football like the MRSA in the Bucs locker room. (Oh, wait. Wrong coach).

Marcus Mariota picked the Bucs’ defense apart with an offense that made Mariota comfortable — short passes that turned into big gains. What a concept!

So, where were the short passes for America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston? Everybody and his brother knew the Bucs’ offensive line was suspect. Yet did you see any two-step drops for Jameis? Anything that could buy him more time or maybe get receivers open?

Joe didn’t see it, either.

Yes, the defense, or lack thereof, was the story of the game. But Jameis, who struggled mightily, wasn’t helped much by his coaches.

The buccaneers were not prepared. That is 100% coaching. Shame on you lovie. The defense was not prepared and the offense was not, prepared. Maybe lovie is too conservative.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

    Tennessee ready my FUKN A$$!

  3. WalkdaPlank Says:

It’s not the O-line’s fault that Winston couldn’t stop tripping over his own damn feet, or couldn’t hold onto the ball, or couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with his wobbly passes.

With that being said, I’m not giving up on him yet. I was for Mariota, but wasn’t upset we took Jameis either. The problem with this team is clear.

It starts at the head, this is the most poorly coached team in football.

Time to cut Lovie loose, hell maybe even sell the team. It’s no coincidence the Bucs haven’t been competitive since Malcolm got sick.

  4. passthebuc Says:

I think this town is about ready to tar and feather someone.

  5. Elle Says:

Maybe because too much faith is being put in Koetter? He arrived here and he was immediately hailed as a great OC. I, on the other hand, wish to wait and see more. Today I wasn’t impressed. Hope that it gets better? Little. I don’t really want to sound dramatic, but if this L doesn’t change things around, FAST, then everybody will need to be fired ASAP. And for the love of all that is good, next coach shouldn’t be picked by a Glazer. You can lose your opener, even at home, but not like THIS. You can’t sugarcoat this showing in any way.

  6. Clint Says:

I tried to get something out of this game. All I saw were lineman getting beat, penalty flags, wobbling duck throws by Jameis, and broken plays mostly.

  7. ARGH_M8E Says:

Watching lovie right now makes me wanna throw my laptop thru the fvcking window, how is fvcking is he so CALM!!!!!! Dammmnnnnit!!!!!!!!!! Fvck THIS BS!!!

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    Fire Lovie tomorrow!

  9. ARGH_M8E Says:

  10. ARGH_M8E Says:

Never been so embarrassed in my life

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Dare I say this team looks WORSE than last season. This team keeps going backwards. They went backwards last season and now they are going even further backwards. Bring back Schiano.

    Yes fire Lovie tomorrow!

  12. dmatt Says:

The blame is 100% on the coach n not Jameis. Great coaches know how to put players in schemes to succeed. The Titans used Oregon’s playbook just to c if it would succeed on the Bucs defense. Frazier n love were both dumbfound…they had no answer. Winston has proven time n time with a no huddle two minute offense…he prospers. Lovie was ur typical deer in the headlight when he was in a daze after two opportunities to challenge some calls. He’s ur typical conservative Lovie smith. I’d rather he b gone n let dirk run the offense as he choose to n please, kick Frazier to the curve while you’re at it. This is too embarrassing.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Clint

    I agree

Althought ASJ looked like he’s progressing?????

….but that’s hard to say when our 1st stringers go up against a titans team that pretty much stopped playing in the 4th quarter and put in their scrubs

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    0-16 is a real possibility.

  15. Elle Says:

    @Buc1987

That’s what I feel as well. One would expect at LEAST a decent effort after last season’s debacle. Nope, we got to watch that dreadful outing against a team that maybe will win five games. Mariota will be brought down on planet Earth once he’ll go against serious team. The Bucs, sadly, aren’t a serious team.

  16. BucBlake Says:

Worst team ever, including trent dilfer rookie season! You should all hang your heads in bitch ass defeat

  17. Seminole Bill Says:

You structure your offense to fit the players you have – not the offense the coach wants to run. We have a weak O-line – Jameis should have been throwing short dump-offs, screen passes. Until we get an O line that can block that is all we can ask of the young man.

Mariota? He played to his abilities. Short passes to avoid the rush. Long passes when scrambling. It worked because the Bucs were out-coached.

  18. buc02 Says:

gutless and uninspired play…..picking wong QB sets this franchise back even further…….Lovie really needs to go

  19. The Real Drew Says:

Where are the rub routes? That’s about 60% of what the Patriots run and why their receivers are alwasys so open.

  20. ARGH_M8E Says:

Derrick Morgan sure looks smart choosing them over us

  21. Tom Edrington Says:

Have said all along it was foolish for those here to put Winston on such a high pedestal……also a bunch here thought Koetter was the second coming…..I think not…..

Also said this team might not be ready to play……it wasn’t that’s on Lovie and his staff…

  22. Buc Neckid Says:

I know that it is popular to bash Lovie and that “defense”
    But Koetter let Jameis down.
Nothing he did set up Jameis for NFL Confidence by gradually building on small progressive steps.
Running Martin was obvious, but his Pass Play Calling was way too assumptive.
After that first series (not the Pick Six)
Koetter should have pulled the reigns way back and simplified the play book.
He should have known what Jameis could handle and what plays he performed best.
Koetter is to blame as much as Lovie for this loss

  23. NashvilleBuc Says:

    Definitely worse than last season!!

My wife is a Bears fan, and was a Lovie fan…. until today. She finally agreed that no professional team with a competent head coach could possibly play the undisciplined and fundamentally sloppy, broken football we saw today. It starts at the top. Lovie must go, even though it means another huge setback for the team.

Jamies sucked, but he’s a rookie. Personally, I think he looks so slow and clumsy that he’ll never be able to compete… we might never know though, cause our coaching is going to get him killed.

The real shame is that our pitiful defense made Mariota look like a seasoned pro-bowler and our entire offense looked like they’d never lined up on a line of scrimmage before.

Like I said for 2 months during the pre-draft debates. Winston is going to be a much needed steroid shot of adrenaline to this team. It’s just who he is.

    Meanwhile in Tennessee…

  26. NashvilleBuc Says:

@BucFan20 who do you think this team can even compete with, let alone win against?

  27. squadoosh Says:

Why was Chris Conte starting? Didn’t he miss almost all of camp and also he pretty much sucks? Just ask Bear fans what they think of that guy…don’t get it.

    Fire Lovie today

  29. BucFan20 Says:

NObody. But right not Lovie is 2-15 and counting.

Hey. I will make sure and be in a few articles so joe can see. I don’t care if it’s one game. Jameis looks as slow as a damn cow. I know bucs needed qb but preferred Mariota over Jameis. The way joe bashed Mariota and praised Jameis every day since today was
Comical. Even the other day with the dick lebeau article joe made sure to call out the remaining Jameis haters. Again I hope things get better but think I have seen enough after one game. I knew Jameis would throw a pick or two a game but didn’t realize he would look this bad. A liability.

Joe u are a moron and I can send u a big dog terd if u promise to eat it. The bucs should ask u before the draft who u like and go the other direction. Aka Johnny football. So funny how joejameisfan.com has produced 18 articles a day about his man crush and attacked anyone who said something negative about Jameis. Joe will right that people will be upset with Jameis after one game. Again. I already know how this plays out. Look at previous post. I knew Mariota would be good

  34. SchlomieBarMitzvahCircumScissorStein Says:

Remember, Lovie was supposed to be the upgrade over Schiano. From Ownership —>Front Office–>Coaching–>Players and down to the disgusting uniforms, everything about this organization sucks…..Absolutely pathetic. Do the new uniforms convey a sense of winning or losing? I think you know the answer. This team doesn’t amount to dog-squeeze.

  35. richbucsfan Says:

We were told since OTA’s that the Bucs were preparing for the Titans. We told the same in preseason. And, after all those months of prep, we get this? Are you kidding me? What will it look like when there are just a few days to prepare? Looks bad to me.

  36. Buc Neckid Says:

    Good News
The Bucs are tied with the Saints and Falcons for Second Place (same Winning Percentage) in the NFC South and are just one game out of First Place.
    WooHoo

  37. Elle Says:

    @Real Drew

I’m not going to attack you, but you can’t use that excuse. Not anymore. What was our record last year? This is not the way to start a new campaign after that debacle. Fans were excited, they packed RJ, and what did they get? A miserable outing against a team you have to beat at home. So no, it’s not just one game. This game means more than it seems. I’d agree with you under different circumstances, but this franchise has been ridiculous ever since Gruden got fired.

And what’s more, I’m starting to feel like Tampa is becoming a cool place where to steal money and chill out, pretending to be working for the good of the Bucs. That’s how bad it is and things need to change ASAP.

  38. BucFan20 Says:

That is 3 BLOW OUT GAMES against a defensive specialist in less than 2 seasons. I don’t care if we piss-off One Love . This clown needs to go!!!

  39. lightningbuc Says:

Jameis – America’s Ra pe Crisis Center’s QB….couldn’t happen to a more deserving, despicable human…feels dirty to be a Bucs fan right now

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    0-16 is a real possibility

Not if they check their egos and go to MG8 if #3 keeps sucking it up. The OL did not play that poorly and their run blocking was certainly adequate.

#3 has clumsy feet, slippery hands that seem to have trouble hanging onto the ball and committing unforced errors.

I am not saying #3 is a bust. I am saying all that BS about his football smarts is waay overrated. His ints were a direct result of HIS mistake…he wasn’t rushed…he had plenty of time..they were both simple plays..an out and a swing pass.

At some point we’re simply going to have to face facts. Perhaps #3’s weaknessis that he gets too pumped up. He has a history of sucking at the beginning of games. He’s no longer facing ACC competion. You can’t spot a team a 14 point lead and expect to win much in this league.

  41. The Real Drew Says:

I just want to see the game next week, that’s all. If it’s still a wreck then I will be severely doubting.

  42. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Joe

MM did not dink and dunk his way. At one point the TV announcers pointed out early in the half that the Titans had 8 plays over ten yards while the Bucs had ONE!!! The Bucs outrushed the Titans big time in the first quarter.

Yes the defense sucked and so did Lovie and Koetter and they were not ready to play. But the MAJOR difference in this game was at the QB position. We might as well face it! MM is a better QB with a much larger skill set than #3. He doesn’t continually trip over his feet or anybody elses, he doesn’t simply let the ball slip out of his hands for unforced errors..I thought the Rose bowl play was a rare occurence..but now I wonder if #3 had sweaty palms or what the hell the problem is.

Having said all of that I remain the optimist. It’s not important for #3 to be better than MM. He simply needs to give us a chance to win…like Brad Johnson. I’m not sure at this point that isn’t MG8. NO MG8 is not the QB of the future…but I can wait on Fameis if MG8 gives us a better chance to win NOW>

  43. Bucs53 Says:

Man—How do some of you fools make it through a season when you want to blow up the world after ONE GAME.

Today sucked, Jameis did stumble, but it doesn’t equate to the unbelievably atrocious job done by the defense or the 60+ yards in penalties by the Oline.

This was a complete failure by the team—anyone who puts this all on Jameis has an agenda or just wants to look like the internet know-it-all.

Give it up–no one cares about your internet message board red. Real Bucs fans are just trying to support the team and looking for immediate progress.

  44. BuccoDav Says:

I’m not blaming this loss on JW but how are you supposed to ease him into the game with short passes and dump offs to the outlet when he can’t even get the ball over the defender? We were told he had great touch but his great touch only worked for their defense!

  45. Bucco brice Says:

Making excuses for “Canada’s QB” now? His first pass went for a pick six and dug a huge whole. Coaches fault? He’s slow. Takes all day to get a pass off. Mariota is quick. Quick release. Obviously was the best in the draft. Demoralizing for everyone. I don’t now how this team recovers from this. Blow the whole thing up again….lovie sucks

  46. mikep4bucs Says:

Joe, I disagree with you that the “story of the game was the defense”, as it was supposed to be Jameis’s day, its going to be talked about in that light and he flopped. No excuses! I would like to see him in shotgun more (he is more comfortable) and not force him to be under center, but the off-balance throws, the risky throws, the wind up, have finally been exploited. Per my email before the draft, he reminds me of Byron Leftwich. I desperately want to be wrong as I am a loyal bucs fan, but I am not seeing the potential which makes me nervous.

  47. StPeteBucsFan Says:

anyone who puts this all on Jameis has an agenda

True dat. I don’t think most are doing that. Many however are pointing out that we got our butts whipped at two critical positions on this team…HC and QB.

The OL actually showed promise and we totally outrushed the Titans through the first Q. Their QB simply outplayed ours. Some of that could be that their QB may be a superstar…it’s only one game…we’ll see.

But one thing is certain. I’m never one to say I told you so because by the time we drafted I was on the Fameis bandwagon. I’m certainly not giving up on him.
But all the morons who kept saying…MM will fail because he hasn’t taken snaps under center…how freaking stooopid is that? Taking a snap from center is not actually a major athletic achievement for Mariota or any NFL caliber talent,

  48. dawn Says:

Lovie has got to go…I have not missed a home game since 1992, until next home game, ….The NFL refs were HORRIBLE, as usual in this game, but even if they(refs) had done a decent job, we would have still been embarrassed and beaten. Winston, or any other QB, doesn’t have a sliver of a chance at success under this poor excuse for a coach. He should resign and turn over his salary to the season ticket holders that have paid dearly for his lackluster attempt at coaching..EPIC FAIL LOVIE…….beyond disgusted in Tampa….I got great seats for sale if anyone is interested…WC section 120….

  49. BucBlake Says:

Please fire lovie and the entire coaching staff NOW! What a pathetic excuse for a nfl team. LOSERS

  50. DB55 Says:

Im just happy we have a real OC who can develop talent. If we still had arroyo he would have put us in a 3rd&42 or something crazy like that, his unit would have like 13 penalties and put up only 18 points. Glad we now have a real OC.

  51. lightningbuc Says:

    db55,

I LOLd at the 4th and 42. The punt was caught at the first down marker.

  52. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Long long year, disgusting lovie cant coach his outdated defensive scheme against a rookie qb, Lovie needs to go

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Know what I saw? A rookie Left Tackle in his first real NFL game getting penalties. I saw a rookie gunslinging quarterback making the same sort of mistakes that the best of them do in their rookie years.

I told you all, it will take 4-6 weeks for the offensive line to gel and the offense to start producing.

Remember, I predicted 2-6 in the first half of the season. This was not one of the wins I expected.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Plus…Mariota is in Winston’s head. He proved it at the rose bowl.

  55. ARGH_M8E Says:

I’m from New England, and always pretty much couldn’t stand these smug Boston fans and teams, but when I fell in love with football because of Mike Alstott in 98’… I had know idea I was signing up for a lifetime of shitty Sunday’s and headaches minus a few fun years around the late 90’s early 2000’s… This sucks, and has sucked ever since Monte Kiffin announced he was leaving us when we we’re 9-3 and lost 4 straight to miss the playoffs and get Grudes fired (biggest mistake ever). This really makes me wish I chose those pieces of $Hit PATS over these bums. What a joke, I just can’t get over this mediocrity. Lame.

A FRIEND ONCE ASKED ME WHO I ROOT FOR… I said the BUCS, which he then said “WHAT DO YOU HATE YOURSELF?!”

  56. Lakeland Buc Says:

I have been saying this all year that Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Mularkey will have Marcus Mariota prepared for the season. They will put him in a position to make plays, and it will be balanced. On the other hand, Dirk Koetter is overrated as an OC, he have always walked into a great situation. But after that first season, the team goes down. The Bucs biggest mistake was that they should have hire Mularkey as Head Coach or as OC. We have the worst coaching staff in the NFL, and this will be their last season in Tampa. Like I said before, anytime you have Chris Conte, Major Wright and Tim Jennings playing in your secondary. You will have a weak secondary, no team wanted them except for the Bucs. You make your bed, and you lie in it. Lovie Smith and Jason Licht has made their bed, I doubt if they make it through the season.

  57. ARGH_M8E Says:

Mediation… Whatever… Go mediate.. Good luck joe, this is horse poop. Happy, no mediation needed! Im disgusted and I’m done, time to go make love to my smoking hot girl and forget all about this steaming pile of poooo that u call a team. Prove ur not yucs, talk is cheap.

  58. Buccfan37 Says:

I expect the Bucs to play better against the Saints next week, that I’m sure of. It will be a close game.

  59. Bobby Says:

it’s one game. That’s all it is. One ugly pitiful horrible game but still just one game. We’ll see what this team is made of next week.

  60. ARGH_M8E Says:
