Trading Alterraun Verner

September 29th, 2015

alterraun verner 1001The math and reality here are simple and sound.

High-priced cornerback Alterraun Verner is a backup now under Lovie Smith. Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, a former NFL cornerback himself, cornerbacks coach Gil Byrd, an ex-Pro Bowler at the position, and Lovie, a former defensive backs coach, consider Verner only worthy of limited duty.

Realize 26-year-old Verner is 100 percent healthy — he wasn’t for part of last year — and will earn a whopping $6.25 million next year, so Joe finds it hard to believe Verner has a future in Tampa under the current head coach.

If that’s the case, then Joe would love to see the Bucs deal Verner for a draft pick before the Week 8 trade deadline.

Yes, cornerback depth is often critical, but there’s little point to Verner if the Bucs fall out of the playoff hunt, which appears imminent.

A former Pro Bowler himself, Verner is a solid cornerback and a good citizen. There’s a great chance a needy team out there would jump at the chance to get him, if they have the salary cap room.

There were lunatics crazy enough to sign Josh McCown and Michael Johnson to big bucks this offseason, Verner has much more upside than those two.

    Hmm… more addition by subtraction I see…

Why are guys always better before or after they come here? Maybe we have a coaching issue?

  2. Fartman Says:

so glad we got rid of Revis so we could get this guy.

  3. Cannon Says:

^ Fartman beat me to it.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Something tells me he’ll be back in the starting lineup soon.

  5. gotbbucs Says:

First we need to know if there are any more garbage ex-Bears defensive backs we can sign and watch fall flat on their collective faces out there. Conte and Jennings have both already proven why they were available for cheap, Swearinger looks like the vaunted Mark Barron out there.
Whole secondary is a joke, not just Verner. Guys across the board on defense are regressing.
The nucleus on offense is there, minus anybody that can truly take the top off the defense. The defense as a whole is showing very little promise.

  6. MadMax Says:

This season is over…..glad I didnt purchase game pass for $99. Im not watching replays of some screw offs.

The competitive guys on the team and the rookies, keep at it. Those of you who just cashed a big check and want to take it easy, I hope you’re gone soon.

Hire me Glazers! I’ll turn everything upside down except Koetter, its his first year here too.

  7. DallasBuc Says:

How come everyone else is expected to “do your job” except for incompetent Lovie Smith.
Watching this guy do his job so poorly is becoming very painful.
    Glazers, cut your losses, again.

  8. bucrightoff Says:

I don’t see much value in a trade. Maybe a 5th rounder? I guess better than straight cutting him but he’s not worth much on the market.

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

This team is a mess thanks to Lovie, When Coach McDaniels or Sabin come in next year, they will have 4-5 DBs that are washed up former chicago bears…keep verner for next year…..this organization right now is a joke and has been and Lovie HAS to go…I am in the minority that thought Schiano should have had one more year….the yapper on 620 in the afternoon proclaimed yesterday that he ran schiano out of town and is now defending this crap to the end, I do not get it? It is probably because his boy D Brooks says lovie is a good guy….well belichek is a jagoff, andy reid was being a jagoff yesterday…sometimes coaches are jagoffs and demand accountability but they win….look at tomlin, that guy doesnt play and his teams mirror his attitude, look at lovie and the bucs are just miserable mirroring his consistentency of losing is ok CMON MAN

  10. FLBoyInDallas Says:

This team needs more depth, not less.

  11. scott fitzgerald Says:

Heck no man. Are you actually thinking? We Keep Verner till its time to sign Banks to an extension. Hopefully by then we will have a new upcoming CB . 6.25 is nothing for a solid vet corner

  12. Stanglassman Says:

Did Jenkins performance last week really earn him the starting job?

Verner is a good CB but for some reason is drawing a lot of very questionable flags so far this season.

Once again- If your going to trade him why not do it for Willie Young not a 5 or 6th rd pick. He checks all the boxes a 10 sack DE and a Chicago Bear.

  13. OneLove Says:

I agree with you Joseph.. Lovie SHOULD have done what John Fox is DOING!! I find it hard to believe that he looked at the talent he inherited and really thought he could MAKE ALL THESE SCRUBS play good football! As a coach he probably thought he could coach these guys up, but its EVIDENT that THEY SUCK! Let’s sell our players and pick up some extra draft picks and start DRAFTING SOME DAMN DEFENSE PLEASE!!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “These scrubs are making me look bad!” aka “I know more about football than you EVER WILL!!!”

  14. bucrightoff Says:

Hey OneLove (aka Lovie’s mom), you do realize this roster is pretty much made of 80-85% guys Lovie changed over from Schiano right? This is almost entirely his team. But you keep blaming everyone but Lovie, mom….

  15. Espo Says:

    Well that escalated quickly.

    Also, Mike James is gone.

  16. Thunder Sack Says:

Considering how many DBs got injured in the last game I don’t see that happening. Also, Lovie mentioned poor performance in regard to Verner. Am i the only one not witnessing that so far this season?

He has been just as good as anyone on the team. Correct me if I am wrong.

  17. DallasBuc Says:

OneLove- how is Verner inherited? This was one of his star free agents along with the great Trash MCown, Anthony Collins, Michael Johnson and EDS. That Lovie Smith really knows what he’s going. A football wizard!

  18. Bucco Brice Says:

this is crazy!!!…reducing corner depth at this point would be ludicrous…bad call Joe 🙁

  19. Buc1987 Says:

OneLove…85% of the current team was picked by Lovie since he’s been here.

So ALL THESE SCRUBS you’re talking about were picked out and up by Lovie Smith.

  20. ander Says:

Hey how about we just bring all lovie smith buddies from Chicago to come down here . And retire because that’s what’s really going on in one buc place. I’m sorry but I’m not sold on Tim Jennings at all . Lovie smith is a good person but I think he’s more stubborn than schiano ever was. He brought McCown down here last year when we all knew he was washed-up and those 5 good games he played with the bears were a fluke. If I am verner I would take it personal that lovie took me out of the lineup just to start his homeboy Jennings

  21. Jeff Says:

I don’t care one bit if the Bucs spend “too much money” on depth. And nobody is going to trade anyting for this guy. Why would they? If you do that you are stuck with a lousy contract.

  22. DB55 Says:

Lovie got beat by a back up QB (again) who started his 4th game in the league and and back up RB. What more needs to be said?

Lovie , gmc, mankins, esmith, Cherilus, Simms, Myers, Verner, conte, mcdougle, wright, spc teams coach, safeties coach, RB coach, oline coach, (am I missing anybody?) they all need to go. And I haven’t seen McDaniels do anything either so he’s on this ice. Oh of course, Frazier you’re fired!

  23. BucMania Says:

Yeah let’s get rid of talent and depth. No wonder this team can never turn the corner.

  24. Ray Rice Says:

Vern should have been riding the pine from day one. He’s on EJ Biggers status right now. Probably even Myron Lewis. Garbage a$$ MF!

  25. LargoBuc Says:

Lets say we end up 2-9 or whatever. My first move would be to get a real proffessional GM in here to run the football operations. And by association, fire Licht before seasons end. We need to have our GM in place BEFORE black Monday and let him hire the new coach after we fire Lovie on 1-5-16. Thats how to do it. Bring in your GM first and make him the overlord of everything football and let him hire his coach. Who that could be, I dont know. Maybe a member from a prestigous teams front office.
If course, Lovie can render this a moot point by winning on Sunday. But sadly, I see a blowout on the horizon.

  26. Kalind Says:

I’m so sick of Lovies clown show. I’m starting to get upset. This guy is so incompetent, he makes Obama look like Bush.

  27. DB55 Says:

    Winston Moss for HC!!!

  28. BirdDoggers Says:

This regime started with one of the worst free agent spending sprees in memory. How can you miss on that many players? I’m not writing off Verner yet but they can’t pay that kind of money to a player riding the pine. Lovie and Licht don’t invoke much confidence when you look at the decisions they made in their first free agent class. They bought themselves 2 wins. Not good considering their plan was to win now.

  29. buc4life1979 Says:

    Fartman said it best^^^

  30. Phil Says:

Nobody will trade for Verner wen the know Lovie will cut him just like he did Revis.

  31. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

We need to trade as many players as we can for better defensive lineman, especially defensive ends. If Lovie is only going to rush the quarterback with 4 linemen they better be great. Lovie’s entire defensive scheme depends on the defensive line man getting to the quarterback in 3 seconds. We need to put most of our salary cap money into talented defensive lineman for Lovie’s scheme to work.

  32. Brent Says:

These guys like verner are solid players. I just don’t think we have the coaching to get the most out of them..

  33. BucsFan4Now Says:

Plain and simple it’s time for Lovie to go!!! It’s quite evident he isn’t the coach he once was. He is full of excuses and the team isn’t prepared week in and week out. This team has too much talent on both sides of the ball to play as awful as they do. Piss Poor Coaching and Game planning…

  34. Drywaller Buc Says:

Why trade guys for a 5th rounder??? So the pick can end up on the practice squad???

  35. Mo_Downs Says:

Clearly, the GRIPE SQUAD, hasn’t figured out the tactical advantage of the Cover-2. Good DB’s are able to lay punishing tackles on WR’s on quick slants.

We don’t have “quick or fast” DB’s, except for Jennings. The rest of our DB’s are DT’s playing DB. A lot of whiffs when lining up for big hits. Lovie is right-on by sending a message that “performance” counts.

Despite all the GRIPES, Lovie isn’t on the field and the guys that are don’t seem to understand the basics of coverage, anticipation, angles of attack, closing and finishing with punishing tackles.

If you believe that those attributes aren’t being reinforced from Day-1 of OTA’s then you don’t have a clue…………….

  36. James Says:

This idiot DB55 seriously said to get rid of GMC LMAO

  37. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah but Mo_Downs, Lovie has hand chosen this entire roster. If these guys suck, guess who chose the sucky players? Lovie sucks at coaching, and might be even worse at talent evaluation. The sooner we can fix the mistake that was hiring him, the brighter the future is. The longer we keep him, the higher the odds he ends up ruining Jameis, and we can’t afford that. For Jameis sake, Lovie needs to go. For the fans sake, he’s already fired in many minds.

  38. Solinor Says:

Joe can you ask Lovie why he’s been benched?

  39. The Buc Realist Says:

Joe, can you ask Lovie if he believe’s his own BS???

  40. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Licht would only get a 6th rounder for him…because he sucks as GM. Of course, everyone here would blame that on Lovie too.

Better to keep Verner. He isn’t nearly so bad as people are saying. And I doubt Joe is right about him being benched. We’ll likely find out he’s not really 100% or he’s moving to the middle.

  41. Another J Says:

This is exactly why coaches shouldn’t be allowed to have final control of personnel.
Lovie Smith is setting the franchise back by years!

  42. Brent Says:

So according to Mo Downs, it’s all on the players. Coaches can go 3-16 and have teams that look horrible but their blameless. Makes you wonder how you see these coaches parcells Carroll Arians Quinn etch take over losing teams and immediately change the teams trajectory. By that logic no coach would ever get fired. Seriously you could be Shula Landry you go 3-16 in your first 19 your going to get criticized.. Even chip Kelly is getting ripped he’s like 21-13. Lovie’s got til the end of the year to fix this but can you spare me all the bs excuses. So far he’s failed. Still got time though.

  43. Bucthis911 Says:

I’m not sold on any corner we have . Should have kept Revis he’s worth the money. Now look where wr are. Love needs to leave his old team exactly where they are in Chicago. Any bring in some new upcoming talent. Last week lo ost was the kicker not lovie.

  44. passthebuc Says:

you can fool some of the people all of the time
    and
all of the people some of the time

and that is all the Lovie needs

  45. bucsbedabest Says:

Trade Verner? What? Last Sunday when Banks went down and then Jennings our lack of depth at CB showed. Verner has been thrown at 11 times with only 5 receptions 45.5%. He is not that bad. Guess what? Verner also has no missed tackles of the 27 this defense has YTD. This team does need a shutdown CB or two and a Safety or two and a DE and a WR and a TE and a G.

  46. BucciNutz15 Says:

I was a fan of the Jennings signing initially, as a RESERVE!! I don’t care how long he played in the “system”. He did not go through the offseason program or preseason on this team as a starter like Verner did. Mike Jenkins….is a 3rd or 4th CB at best.Lovie was singing his praises in the preseason as to supplant Banks at the other corner. Obviously I don’t watch the “coaches film”, but Verner hasn’t made that many bad plays to be this deep in the doghouse. He’s made just as many Pro Bowls as Jennings in his career and is considerably younger. I think sometimes Lovie makes the same mistake I do as a talent evaluator in Fantasy Football every year. He over values “his guys” …Btw Conte, you can’t grab people’s face masks in football. This results in something called a penalty. I think that’s the first thing they taught me in Pop Warner 30 years ago.

  47. jackpc1 Says:

Why bother releasing him. Coach and DC will be fired during off season.

  48. Mo_Downs Says:

Yes, let’s fire Lovie after 3 games into the season and replace him with Koetter.

Let’s complain about a defense that has held 2-3 opponents under 20ppg.

Clearly, the DEFENSE is the problem..??

It’s worth noting that the Titans would be unbeaten if they had held their last 2 opponents under 20ppg.

It’s worth noting that once upon a time Lovie hired then fired Ron Rivera (Bears LB coach) who went on to become the Panthers HC.

It might also be worth noting that there is no love loss between these 2 head coaches. Rivera was pissed that Lovie fired him even though Rivera got the HC job at Carolina a few years later.

ATC, I suspect Rivera wouldn’t be too upset if Jameis was on IR after this game.

  49. Johnny Dejay Says:

Hey Lovie, tell us more about Mike Jenkins.
