“They’re Pitiful”

Logan Mankins was one of three offensive linemen grilled by a former Buccaneer

There was rampant skepticism and fear surrounding the Bucs’ offensive line entering this season.

And it cranked up a couple of notches after Sunday’s debacle.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) took to the WDAE-AM 620 airwaves yesterday and talked about what he knows best, Tampa Bay offensive line play.

“The word to me is they’re pitiful. That’s it,” Beckles bellowed. “We can go man to man. Ali Marpet had a some good pancake blocks. But as a whole, as an offensive [line] there’s no quarterback in this day an age that’s going to be successful behind that offensive line.”

“I saw offensive linemen setting like, honestly, like they were high school players. I don’t know where the coaching is. To me, coaching may have been the worst thing out there and not the actual personnel.”

Beckles named names.

“Gosder Cherilus is really bad. He’s really bad, and Logan Mankins ain’t much better,” Beckles said. “Donovan Smith (laughs). They ain’t ready for prime time. I’m telling you.”

What also troubled Beckles was the Bucs giving up on Doug Martin running very early in the game. Beckles claimed the Bucs and Jameis Winston would have benefited from a deeper commitment to Martin, who finished with 11 carries, despite the lopsided score.

The O-line Captain of the Bucs will not be playing in the league next year!!! It is as simple as that!!!!!

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I love it when I am speaks the truth

  3. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Evan(D) Smith is terrible, he can not block or snap from the shotgun to save Jameis’ life. Play Warren or the new Dude the signed, and get him the hell out of TB. D Smith will be fine. And as for Gosder, there was a reason why he was not signed. I would have taken the chance on Jake Long first, but hey, he is now on his way to ATL. Once again, Lovie can not build an O line, and if it was not for Licht, Marpet and D Smith would not be here, bank on it.

  4. Destinjohnny Says:

Lovie the gm like Gruden the gm i predict in the really near future is getting himself sacked. Missing on Mariota is the nail in the coffin people.
I don’t know if any of you went to practices but, they were so easy and lackadaisical.
The bucs play the game like like they practiced in training camp ( half ass)

  5. DallasBuc Says:

Hilarious how people are always slamming Beckles when he is critical of aspects of this football team such as our softass #93 and the rank ineptitude of our oline. Then low and behold, Beckles is right and silence from the critics!
Keep speaking honestly on the airwaves Beckles, some of us appreciate it whether we agree or not.

  6. tdtb2015 Says:

49 yards in the first half for Martin. I think the Koetter scheme help just a little.

They way our defense was playing was not because they were tired. Running more would have cause their defense to be tired but so what. Our defense was giving points away!

The game was really over in the 2nd qtr.

    We are 2-15!

  7. FLBoyInDallas Says:

When this team is 1-7 at the halfway point this season, the Glazers should fire Lovie, elevate Koetter to interim HC and let him choose his own coaches and coordinators. Simple as that.

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

That’s the best part of WDAE listening to Ian and Tkras rip people on their radio shows………cause they speak the truth 99% of the time

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Dallas

It was the same when Shaun King would say the truth about the “rockstar” you would hear most say that he was “jealous”, “racist”, “A bad QB” or just say he is fat! And then reality hit and he was right!!!!

  10. Brett Says:

The Bears had everything they needed to won in Chicago… except an O-line. Cutler may not be the greatest, but he is serviceable. And they had Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall and a great defense. Not to mention Devin Hester.

I remember playoff games with Cutler getting smacked around like a rag doll. Lovie has a huge problem with O-line evaluation.

The next head coach of your Tampa Bay Buccaneers is…. Eric Mangini.

  11. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    1 – 7 ?????

Who are they actually going to win against???

This team actually looks worse than last year

  12. Bucco Brice Says:

    2 ROOKIES, 2 HAS BEENS AND 1 OVERRATED CENTER…”simple as that”…

  13. tmaxcon Says:

They should have released EDS and Mankins prior to week 1 so the 11 million in cap savings could be carried over. Once again Lovie is wasting millions of glazer cash on useless players. Add that 11 million to his 31 million in dead money and you could put some decent players on the field with that wasted 42 million …. Lovie has made a total mess of this team and wasted more cap space than raheem was allowed to spend. Simple as that.

  14. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The coaching staff must see something in EDS that us normal fans don’t see obviously because he is starting.

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Bucco Brice

    LOL

    nice one

  16. bucrightoff Says:

There’s no bigger trademark of a Lovie Smith team than a horrible offensive line. Jameis isn’t going to be a bust because he’s not good, he’s going to be a bust because he’s going to be pressured and running for his life as long as Lovie is coach.

  17. TheBucsAnthem Says:

You cannot blame Jameis poor decision making purely on the O – line

  18. ruggyup Says:

So far none of Joe’s honored respondents has mentioned the most important Beckles line “To me, coaching may have been the worst thing out there and not the actual personnel.” Thank you Ian, that’s been bugging me for as long as the present staff has been employed.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Brett

Hypothetically speaking – If Coach Lovie Smith cant right the ship

    How about Dean Pees? Seriously

Dudes been in the coaching ranks for 40yrs (He’s Seen it all)

He’s been a Key Personnel Guy for two Championship Teams
    • Bill Belichick | Linebackers, Defensive Coordinator
    • John Harbaugh | Defensive Coordinator

He can mold his hybrid defensive (3-4 Personnel with a 4-3 front) to fit out current roster(Better for LVD). Plus this dude gives Offensive Coordinators fits.

I don’t care who it is:
    • Norv Turner
    • Todd Haley
    • Josh McDaniels
    • Greg Roman
    • Dirk Koetter

Mr. Pee’s has destroyed them all.

    _______________________________________________________

Of course not, that first INT was a predetermined throw and he had several other awful decisions. But he’s going to develop all kinds of bad habits, Jay Cutler/Josh Freeman like habits, if he keeps playing behind a crap line. You can hope the decision making improves, but the bad traits he could develop from such a bad line could make him another David Carr.

  21. johnnyc Says:

Mankins should change his name to turnstile

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *to fit our current roster

  23. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Maybe Lovie is losing the locker room a little bit???? Players can only take so much losing before they start losing their faith in coaching schemes

…..and players play their hardest for coaches they love too

  24. ruggyup Says:

Another prize winning quote, “Smith attributed the defense’s effort to a combination of coaching, scheme and execution – “All of the above,” he said – and added that what was seen on the field Sunday is not the Buccaneers team that will be seen the rest of the year.”
Somebody put that on your call back list for future reference and contract negotiations!

  25. Tom Edrington Says:

They would have to improve to reach “pitiful” status.

  26. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

That game on Sunday was the physical embodiment of a Lovie Smith press conference…low energy, no passion

  27. JMN Says:

Maybe a bye week bbq at Mankins house? Sadly, brisket can’t cure the O line troubles.

  28. Howard Cosell Says:

    AUDIT THE BUCS!

  29. destro44 Says:

Please for the stop talking Defensive coordinator for head coach. I’m sick of defensive teams. Even when we had Gruden we were a defense team. I want a respectable offense for once in my life.

  30. LargoBuc Says:

Our players arent executing. They miss assignments and they lack talent. When we got burned, we were not in cover two usualy. Look it up. So all those times Verner got burned, he was in man coverage, which is troubling because I thought man coverage was Verners strength and all last year we heard how the transiition to zone was troubling him.
Are these guys that bad? For some reason they are just not taking to Lovi

  31. FortMyersDave Says:

Ian makes a great point about the lack of coaching contributing to the OL woes….. Who is the OL coach? Oh yeah, Warhop; wasn’t he another face most of us fans expected the Bucs to pink slip with Arroyo last season after Lovie tanked it to 2-14? Looks like Warhop is simply another shield/scapegoat Lovie can use when explaining to ownership and/or the fans about why this team is so God Awful bad again. I am surprised Koetter retained him; does anyone know if the OC had any say on who he had on his coaching staff or was that all on Lovie?????

  32. Pick6 Says:

it’s the same every year. the bucs look awesome….when they are playing against themselves.

  33. Deminion Says:

Hire Pep Hamilton(Colts O coordinator) he is a young brilliant mind.

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

C’mon guys, Lovie said it’s just one game. Don’t overreact now. We should easily beat the Saints by 3 TD’s. Jameis says we just have to look at film and get better. Fact is that it isn’t going to get better with Lovie in charge, calling defenses, drafting like crap, making excuses, putting square pegs in round holes. The bright side of this is that by mid season the Bucs should have at least half the roster of over 35 yr old former Lovie disciples.
Phrase of the day “Stay the Course”.

  35. Deminion Says:

He was the OC/QB coach at Stanford too. I think whoever hires him will be getting a steal.

  36. Deminion Says:

Or Get Teryl Austin( DET d coordinator)

  37. Ray Rice Says:

    GARBAGE! FILTH!

  38. Tomcin Says:

I couldn’t agree more. Dovie & Warhop should have been gone after last season. I kinda feel sorry for the fans at the game who bought into this crap. I wouldn’t go to a Bucs game if I got free tickets. As for America’s QB what a joke. When people refer to Winston as America’s QB, I realize now they were referring to South America. I know its only the 1st game but I think we’re looking at another long season. And by the way Dovie is going nowhere. Aren’t you fans glad you & the media ran Schiano out of town? Be careful what you wish for. As for the Glazers they are completely clueless.

  39. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Fire Lovie and hire Deez Nuts

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

So stop with the worst in the league. Ian has some valid points mixed with some envy.

Russell Wilson sacked 6X..he’s now slew footed stumble bum!

Fameis sacked 4X and he fumbled his way into a couple of them.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Some want to place it with the Glazers.
They are the ONLY consistent factor in our 30-101

Some place it on Lovie…he is the HC and the team was horribly unprepared..he deserves all the insults.

Some place it on the defense…yeah they sucked big time!

Some place it on the OL and two rookies and “over the hill” unmotivated vets.
We actually ran the ball well early, clearly they do not yet have the skill set to pass block.

And then there is Fameis. He threw two inexcusable picks and should have had four…one of which would have negated a TD if the defender had snagged it. He had two fumbles..mishandled two simple handoffs…stumbled around like he was drunk…but IT’S NOT FAMEIS’ FAULT He’s a beloved rookie with the hopes of the franchise upon his shoulders. And so no…POOR Fameis has no chance because of the other things I mentioned.

Oh and if you don’t believe me, join Joe in finding as many people as possible who will point out HYPOTHETICALLY that NO QB could play behind our OL.

  41. passthebuc Says:

Don’t fire lovie, he will walk away with 5 million per year for 3.5 more years.
Just demote him to water boy or ball boy.
    fitting for his ability

  42. SchlomieBarMitzvahCircumScissorStein Says:

John Gruden circa’ 2009: “We just have to get better.” Raheem Morris 2011: “We just have to get better.” Greg Schiano 2012: “We just have to get better.” Love Smith 2015: “We just have to get better.” …………..Yeah, everyone be more patient……The fans are wrong to be impatient….Sure, sure…

  43. USMC Says:

Checking out for the year. GO BOLTS.

  44. Greg Schiano Says:

Yea…but with John Gruden…he won a Super Bowl! Radio Morris…well skip him! That guy Schiano won more games in 1 season that Lovie will in his 5 year contract if it is allowed to go that way.

Did anyone…anyone at all see any improvement in the attitude of the team…the game planning at the start of the game, game plan changes after half time, clock management, any improvement at all from the 2-14 Lovie Season from 2014? Me either!

Atlanta was excellent! Tomsula had the Niners kicking butt…they looked tough and like they wanted to play football! The Eagles saw Chip Kelly making excellent game plan changes at half time and they should have won the game last night. We need a Chip Kelly! There are young HC candidates out there…look at the JETS! Another good young HC!!

Lovie was sent packin from Chicago after 10 wins…not because he was a good HC, but because the division da Bears are in sucked that year…he should have won 14! Lovie is not a HC. I am not sure I would even want him for a DC….time to move on. Team Glazer was so close to getting Chip Kelly…..that is worth whatever it costs…who cares about Lovie’s 5 million…get him out of there…this is pathetic!

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Typo in the picture caption, Joe. I make the same mistake all the time, so I noticed it, lol.

As to Beckles…I wish I’d have known it was him that said it BEFORE opening the page.

  46. Curse of Gruden Says:

The one thing that gas bag Beckles is certainly an expert on is poor offensive line play.

  47. cmurda Says:

The O Line wasn’t near as bad as Beckles claims. Evan Smith was the worst. Please get Evan Smith out of there. The offensive line or even the offense for that matter didn;t get us our tail whipped. It was the Angelsoft defense.

  48. Tbbucs3 Says:

Evan Smith sucks and Gosder will get better. Lovie/Licht shouldn’t of touched the Oline when they got to Tampa. The Bucs line problems on both sides haven’t been this bad in recent years.
