Even America’s Quarterback would foul his pants if you tried to sell him that he played better than Aaron Rodgers this week.

Joe tries to keep an open mind about the stat geeks. Really.

Some stats are useful. Hey, Joe uses them every day and so do just about all fans of sports, even if it is just yards-per-carry or completion percentage or, for example in baseball, batting average and ERA.

But this myriad of statistical graffiti and half-baked acronyms is over the top and someone needs to put a stop to it.

This brings Joe to the con artists over at Pro Football Focus.

Joe share some of their stuff (again, Joe tries to keep an open mind), it is occasionally insightful. But if you are paying good money for folks with little or no football background to try to convince you Nick Foles is a better quarterback than Aaron Rodgers or Andrew Luck, you need to contact your local office of the Better Business Bureau.

Will Brinson of CBS Sports pointed out an outrageous grading by the spreadsheeters, where they contend America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, among others, had a better game this week than Rodgers.

Regular readers of Joe know and should fully understand that Joe is in the tank for Jameis. But only perhaps Jameis’ parents, girlfriend and a raging blind drunk would suggest Jameis had better game than Rodgers this week. To suggest otherwise is just asinine. To front numbers that claim Jameis outplayed Rodgers, well, someone needs to tinker with their software.

This is just like this offseason, when the Pro Football Focus crowd claimed Luck, was not a top-10 quarterback. If that wasn’t bad enough, they doubled-down with a column backing up their stats. In fact, the same crowd claimed Luck was the worst quarterback in the NFL, worse than Josh McClown, even!

Joe is sure just about every NFL general manager reading was rolling on the ground in pain, crippled with laughter.

As always, common sense must applied and critical thinking should be used with stats. Anyone, and Joe means anyone, who watched Jameis play Sunday, and then watched Rodgers masterfully dissect the Chiefs last night, would tell you who the better quarterback of the week was.

Sometimes, people have to get their heads out of the spreadsheets and actually watch a game.

And people actually pay good money for this nonsense?
