Inept Defense All On Lovie

September 13th, 2015
Lovie's defense was on full display today.

Lovie’s defense was on full display today.

Before Sunday’s opening game debacle (can you say “Bolt for Bosa?”), Bucs coach Lovie Smith, who proudly took over play-calling duties on defense, boasted how the Bucs were “Tennessee ready.”

Joe didn’t realize Lovie was talking about the Volunteers.

As for the NFL team from the same state, Lovie’s defense wasn’t ready. They weren’t ready for the short passes turning into double-digit gains. They weren’t ready Marcus Mariota running a read-option.

The Bucs defense, guided by Lovie, wasn’t ready. At all. Simple as that.

And for the Bucs to be that lost, that befuddled, that confused, that ill-prepared for the first game of the season is a damning indictment on the guy responsible for the defense.

And that would be Lovie, your Bucs head coach.

You can’t tell Joe the Bucs didn’t prepare for the Titans until after the fourth complete waste of time known as the final preseason game. Hell, America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, admitted the quarterbacks had been studying tape to prepare for the Titans back in May during OTAs.

Did Lovie not think the Titans would install an offense to get the most out of Mariota, who did not run a pro-style offense in Oregon? If not, why not? Half the bartenders in the Tampa Bay area could have guessed the Titans would do this. It’s just common sense.

Remember, Lovie admitted this week the team is getting closer to having the players capable of playing his system. God forbid Lovie might have to adjust his scheme to better fit the players he has on hand, or adjust to better contain a specific offense, which is what most good coaches do.

And of course, yet a-friggin–gen, an edge rush from a Bucs defense is akin to a sighting of Sasquatch.

The way the Bucs were completely lost and unprepared on defense falls on one person and one person alone. That would be Lovie, who now needs 11 wins in 15 games to match Raheem Morris’ first two seasons’ win total, and 9 wins in 15 games to match Greg Schiano’s two-year win total.

He’s seriously made us long for Raheem. That fact alone should get him $hit canned tomorrow.

    StPete

i hope you are doing well sir… Your guy Lovie is killing me… even I thought i was getting over the top in my hatred of his coaching ability and philosophy and then he has to go out and prove me right… if anything my over the top hatred of his coaching and philosophy was an understatement. his defense could not stop a pop warner team… it’s not personal i could careless about him personally but he can’t coach, can’t motivate and his stubbornness is killing my favorite team

  4. Tim Says:

Shockingly incompetent. Blow it up. What draft picks can we get for GMC, Lavonte, ASJ, et al. I’m officially off the Lovie bandwagon.

  5. theodore Says:

Tampa 2 down for the count. It’s no secret (soft middle) how to beat it.

  6. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

“an edge rush from a Bucs defense is akin to a sighting of Sasquatch.” LMAO!

  7. Lurch Says:

That was embarrassing in every facet of the game. If I was the Glazers Lovie would be cleaning out his office tonight.

  8. Buc Neckid Says:

    Sure Winston was not good
    but he is a Rookie
What did we expect (and don’t say what Mariota did, that was a fluke)
    But Lovie’s Defense was inexcuseable.
    No Leadership anywhere.
    GMC – nope
    David – Nope
    Verner – Nope
    Nobody stepped up
    Maybe only glimmer was Kwon
but even he looked like a rookie at times
How this team let a Rookie torch them like that is Inexcuseable.
Mariota just three step dropped and hit the seam ALL DAY LONG
    Nothing cute
Just execution of plays that they knew he could succeed in
So those who think Koetter should be the next Head Coach if Lovie gets fired,
See how much success the offense as a whole had.
    AND THEN make that assesment
    In the End,
If you did not know it by now
Welcome to the Rebuilding year…. AGAIN

  9. LJ'sDaddy Says:

I am also off the Lovie Smith bandwagon. I am also about three quarters and drunk. Chicago fans warned us. I am done with Lovie.

  10. tdtb2015 Says:

    I AGREE.

BUT JOE STOP MAKING YOURSELF LOOK LIKE A FOOL WITH YOUR QB PREDICTIONS! JOHNNY FOOTBALL JW AMERICA’S QB????

ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THOSE INTERCEPTIONS???????

    AWFUL!

  11. Bucs53 Says:

Embarrassing. Blowouts have no place in the NFL where parity seems to reign for the most part. The defense was HORRIBLE—Jameis looked rough, but NOTHING was worse than the defense. The Oline was horrible as well how about some more penalties boys).

What a joke. Fix it quickly or Lovie needs to be fired. I wouldn’t even let him finish the season if we have more blowouts.

  12. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

cant wait for st pete and the other lovie apologists to sugarcoat this crap

  13. Bucs53 Says:

    Buc Neckid:

Don’t bring your well reasoned logic here—don’t you realize that right now Buc’s fans only want to blame Jameis???

  14. Clodhopper Says:

What is the point of having a defensive minded head coach that can’t put a professional defense on the field for two straight years? Lovie’s defense is garbage and he should be thrown out of the league for that embarrassment. At least year it was against Flacco and Ryan. This is a rookie QB in his very first game sitting out the entire fourth quarter. Really??? Beyond unacceptable. That is Fireable!!

    #FIreLovie!!

  15. Buc1987 Says:

I miss Greg Schiano. Fire Lovie tomorrow. Yes I’m serious.

  16. Greg Says:

Im sorry but I have to say it.
I have been saying sense day one that
    Lovie=Fail

  17. Delson Says:

Where is ur Jameis article JOE? I saw the Jameis from FSU playing today. Horrible decisions left and right. How bout the inability to score WITH ALL THOSE CHANCES!? Ur man could not adjust plays nor get his team lined up correctly.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

tdtb2015…what happened to in Lovie and Licht I trust?

  19. Buc1987 Says:

Just as I predicted though, fans would be jumping all over Jameis after 1 start.

  20. Bucs53 Says:

    Delson:

A rookie struggled in his first game???

Alert the authorities! If you try to make judgements based off of one game—you are a fool.

Our defense was horrific, and made Mariota look like Elway.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

The whole team looked like shyte…but somehow it’s all Winston’s fault. Kind of knew this would happen.

  22. Delson Says:

It isn’t one game. Have u seen jameis play in FSU?

  23. This Guy Right Here Says:

    A former Lovie apologist… Im ashamed…

We already knew the man didnt know how to speak… double-talk BS he fed us… but I at least hoped he knew how to speak Football! And get it through to HIS D!

Just a Lame Ass Coach who cant deliver whatever the fcuk is going on in that head… to the media, or to his own players… fcukin moron…

  24. Bucco brice Says:

One of the worst games in bucs history. 3 Of the worst now in the past 2 years. Unprepared. Terrible coaching.

Those picks were bad and it should have been 4, but really he has no chance with Lovie and his consistently horrible lines, and now horrific defense that will constantly have him playing from behind.

  26. Deminion Says:

Only guy on D that had heart was McDonald… Btw Cherlius is trash

  27. Buc1987 Says:

bucrightoff ….better get used to the picks.

  28. Delson Says:

    PRO READY MY ASS

  29. Arealbucsfan Says:

Where was the Defense!?! Winston played as well as he could in his first game. But how could we let a Rookie do us like that?

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Well I left the game at halftime anyways. Couldn’t bare to watch anymore.

  31. BuccoDav Says:

I pissed off the bartender at my local wateting hole when I threw my bottle of adult beverage at the tv in disgust… in the first quarter. I then headed for the Sunshine Skyway but the line to jump was so long I decided to just give up…much like Lovie’s defense.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    1 game Delson…1 game.

  33. bucrightoff Says:

I got that 87, but playing behind this line he’s gonna develop all the bad, Jay Cutler type tendencies. Today there was no apparent gameplan, though down 21 before the first 10 minutes changes everything too. But I’d rather protect Jameis right now for the next coach and just let Glennon take the abuse this year and not ruin Jameis.

  34. Tom Edrington Says:

I said twice here leading into this game that I did not believe this team was ready to play……it was not….blame Lovie and his entire staff.

  35. n. fl buc Says:

damn it stop calling him Americas quarterback

  36. This Guy Right Here Says:

    “1 game Delson…1 game.”

…been waitin 10 motherfckin months for this 1 game. wasnt even close. just wondering whose thumb lovie was sittin on all summer long to fcuk this up as royally as he did..

KEEP LOVIE HIRED, AND HE’LL HE’LL DAMAGE SOME CAREERS ON HIS WAY DOWN!

  37. hodad Says:

We didn’t pick the wrong Q.B., we picked the wrong head coach. Mariota, was good today, but I doubt he throws 4 TD s in 16 attempts next week. The Tampa 2 is dead, Lovie needs to be sent back to his basement. I’ve watched some bad Buc ball in my life. Today has to be the worst I’ve ever seen.

  38. Clodhopper Says:

I’m waiting for the press conference to start. Lovie better start it with “The Glazers have just fired me because I’m an incompetent boob and they are right.”

unless its already started and their website is as awful as the team is!

  39. Delson Says:

U know why Glennon wont take the field this year? QB controversy. Glennon will probably be traded for peanuts. SMH Winston is the same QB from FSU.

  40. Bucs53 Says:

    Delson:

Yeah, I saw him play at FSU. I saw him win the Heisman, the national championship, two ACC titles, countless awards, throw almost a perfect game in Pitt (which is almost never done), and only lose one game. Thank you for making my argument for me.

I have to ask, what team do you root for? It sure doesn’t seem to be the Bucs. You seem to take an unusual amount of pleasure in watching your team struggle.

  41. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Holy crap

  42. BuccoDav Says:

This loss is on Lovie, period. But to say there wasn’t a game plan is just ridiculous. The ground game was working and the protection wasn’t horrendous. I saw JW lock onto receivers, force balls where they shouldn’t be thrown and for God’s sake, someone teach the guy how to throw to an outlet receiver!

  43. StPeteBucsFan Says:

blame Lovie and his entire staff.

Cannot disagree with that. He has 15 games to save his job. At least six wins.

It’s clear we did not select the best QB. MM simply has more talent and better judgement than the “football high IQ” Fameis. Those two picks were not on the OL, not because #3 forced it trying to make a play.

Koetter sucked as badly as Lovie. How do you get that many offensive penalities including at least three on formations?

Where was GMC today? LVD? Can anybody on this team tackle or are they too busy trying to gamble and punch the ball out. How about wrapping up?

I give #3 one more horrible game like this before I give MG8 a chance. Yes #3 has more upside than #8 but at this point #8 may give us the best chance to win THIS YEAR!

Again an FSU QB lead us to a Superbowl. I’m not ready to call #3 a bust…but I’d be happy at this point if he could simply get to Brad Johnson capability.

#3 is NOT going to ever be better than MM…but I do not believe Eli Manning will ever be as good as Aaron Rodgers. It isn’t critical for #3 to be the better QB…it is important for him to get his head out of his rectum, develop at least some footwork without stumbling all over himself…and to learn how to hang on to the football. Too many unforced errors like that Rose Bowl play. I’m not writing him off but I’m not willing to write off our entire season for him to learn the error of his ways. MG8 may have less upside but if he gives us a better chance to win this year then let him play!!! I would rather go 6-10 with MG8 than 3-13 with #3.

  44. Bucs53 Says:

    stpetebucsfan:

I would agree with you about MG8 except that when he got a chance to play extended minutes in Preseason he looked even worse than Jameis. So I am not sure benching Winston is the answer. At this point, it might just be better to let Winston take his licks and learn on the job. Plus, Glennon is even less mobile than Winston and our Oline leaked like a sieve today.

    It’s a tough call, though.

  45. Delson Says:

The Heisman n National Championship was when? His freshman year? Geno Smith actually threw a perfect game in college but what has he done? Thank u for proving ur just another Winston pubic hair on this site. I hope these threads go into the Winston Watch cuz i know a win would’ve.

  46. Buc1987 Says:

SPBF…This team might go 0-16 WITH or WITHOUT Glennon as the starter.

Glennon…pshhh he’s the answer right now?

    No the answer is :

    Fire Lovie Smith tomorrow!

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Lovie Smith : “were on the verge”

    Seige the BS!

  48. bucntarv Says:

    Ugly…..that show was ugly!

  49. SchlomieBarMitzvahCircumScissorStein Says:

Quite making excuses for Winston. Good QB’s overcome adversity, offensive line not withstanding. HE was the ONE that was supposed to be NFL ready. Brooks and all the other’s are gonna eat their words. Count on it.

  50. DB55 Says:

Real BUC fans know we’re on the verge!!!

  51. Tampa Tony Says:

St Pete, still confident about your 10 win prediction?

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Winston remains the starter for all 15 games left. We’re not going back to Glennon.

  53. DB55 Says:

10-6 baby. In Lovie I trust!

  54. Bucs53 Says:

    Delson:

You keep pointing to his FSU career like you knew he was terrible based off his collegiate performance. Except that his collegiate performance was exceptional, and when I point that out all you can say is “when was that?”

It was in college troll, just like you keep pointing to—he had an amazing college career, and the majority of the talking heads agreed that he was by far the better pro prospect, and that still may be true. One game does’t mean jack.

I love that you still haven’t answered what team you actually root for, troll.

  55. Buc1987 Says:

SchlomieBarMitzvahCircumScissorStein…this was one game. No one is making any excuses for Winston after one game. There’s simply no need to. Just as there’s no need to be as critical as some a-holes that come here are going to be.

Lovie Smith is the problem. We’ve got our future franchise QB, we just need a new coach and sooner rather than later.

  56. Buc1987 Says:

How are the Glazer brats not looking at Lovie right now and saying WTF?

  57. Cannon Says:

Why does our team almost always look out coached?

  58. Buc1987 Says:

Dungy’s defense would have shut that team down!

  59. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Today’s crap show reminds me so much of Raheem’s 2011 season…the team looking completely clueless, undisciplined, and mentally out of the game shortly after kickoff. It’s a shame the Glazers didn’t give Schiano one more year but with a different GM than the “rockstar”. Much like making the excuse that a rookie QB needs to gain experience before determining if they’re a bust or a future first ballot hall of famer, the same can be said for head coaches. Schiano had to learn some tough lessons, and o think he would have. Lovie on the other hand has been in this league long enough to know better which makes these ass whoopin losses (at home no less!!) totally inexcusable.

  60. bucrightoff Says:

A full season starting under Lovie is going backwards for Jameis. We need to protect him, it’s not about Glennon being better, it’s about saving Jameis for the next coach. We can’t crush his development playing with such a crappy team, he has no chance.

  61. Louis Friend Says:

They have to play 15 more games. But aside from that this season is done. They had 4 months to prepare for this game, and this is what they came up with.

Fire Lovie. Do it now and guarantee the top pick. Start recruiting the next coach. Don’t wait until the good ones are gone by holding off until January!

Just do it. This guy – Lovie – this guy isn’t going to bring the team back to glory.

    Ever.

  62. Matts17 Says:

Why does the lame ass GM get a pass here? He’s just as responsible for this disaster. If Lovie had an ounce of character, he’d resign tomorrow. Licht should do the same, he clearly lacks the necessary evaluation skills to field a competent team.

  63. Louis Friend Says:

And yeah, even Schiano would’ve done better than this.

  64. cometowin2 Says:

Please fire Lovie. He is the worst coach we have ever had. Yes I wanted Mariota but not ready to give up on Winston. Lovie I’m done with him.

  65. Louis Friend Says:

Matts17 – you think Licht is responsible for Conte starting today? Ha!

  66. Buc1987 Says:

    Is Lovie still the coach?

  67. CalBucsFan Says:

I expected some rookie mistakes on the offensive side of the ball, but sure the heck didn’t think they would come from our “rookie” OC! Jameis was NOT ready for this game and the play calling reminded me of last year’s vomit. No excuses either, Titans had no problem getting their rookie QB a play book written to his strengths, try that next week Koetter!

Reality of it is though that this puke of a game was on the defense, that swiss cheese defense with giant holes in the middle and NO one who seems to know how to cover anyone, just run behind them after they catch the ball!

Smith and Frasier, this is on you both, chuck the Tampa-2, adapt to the players you have because these players are NOT adapting to your system!

  68. Louis Friend Says:

cometowin2 – Amen. Fire him now. Start the coaching search early.

  69. Harry Says:

I say the Glazers can’t fire MF Lovie fast enough!!!! I am sooooo friggin sick of this sp!t!!

  70. Buc1987 Says:

CalBucsFan..nice post. You forgot to add the lack of tacking as well. OMG Schiano would not have put up with that crap.

  71. cometowin2 Says:

Bring on the fire Lovie billboards.

    #Fire Lovie

  72. chris Says:

He stumbled over his own feet, self sacked himself. Ran into rbs, fumbled pitches threw two really, really bad ints, and you still stand up for him because you’re FSU fanatics. Just like the Tebow crowd at UF. The fans of Florida football are college football fans first, NFL fans second. The blinders you have for his deficiencies come about because of your NCAA allegiance. He’s slow, not quick twiched, has bad footwork , makes questionable decisions on the field and in life. By the way, born and raised in Tampa, unlike a lot of you.

  73. cometowin2 Says:

Wish some reporter had the balls to ask him to resign.

  74. SAPP, STFU Says:

There is no reason to continue starting Jameis. Play Glennon until thi train-wreck Oline is fixed.

I’m the type to let ownership make their decisions. And theyhave made many good ones since Malcolm was calling the shots. But I’m pretty much done with the Lovie experiment.

  75. Buc1987 Says:

    chris…ONE game.

  76. This Guy Right Here Says:

Lovie wins a coin toss, says ‘no, give them the ball”… The man has a Losers mentality…. Hoping for freak plays/turnovers, instead of coaching up fundamental 3 & out defense…

The man is just not smart… I hear it when he speaks, and now I see it when he coaches… and his players obviously dont know what the fcuk to do so THEY SEE IT TOO!

CUT BAIT Glazers! Lovies not Management Material… He’s a Glorified Defensive Coordinator with a Head Coaches Ego…

Koetter for HC in 2016!!!!!!! Marinelli For DC!!!!!!!

  78. chris Says:

I understand Buc1987 you more than anybody on this site has his wagon hiched to Fameis . However, in this newer NFL of the past 10 years, either you have it within your first year or you don’t. This isn’t the NFL of the 70s. No organization of today can wait five years for a QB to develop, like the Steelers did with Bradshaw. You’ll all argue me down, but Marotta processes and reads so much quicker than you’re pro- ready qb.

  79. Couch Fan Says:

I said before that Glennon could possibly be better for us to start the year out. But none of that was possible because Imcompetent Lovie wouldn’t even allow a competition. This is the kind of game coaches get fired for. Horrible. It’s inexcusable how unprepared and out coached we constantly are. Thoroughly dominated by a rookie who practically did the same thing over and over and we had no answer. That was the fullest I’ve seen the stadium in a long time and it probably wont be that full again for a long time after the dump the team took in front of us today.

  80. mark2001 Says:

I didn’t think Jameis played that bad. He flashed, IMO. That’s all I wanted. Sure, Mariota played better, but he was going against Lovie BS D. Winston looked good against it all summer, didn’t he?!

It darn sure wasn’t Winston that made me turn the game off at the half – it was that Lovie’s D gave up 35 friggin points in a half against a team that was 2-14 last year!!!

  83. Delson Says:

Bucs53 this is the first time I’ve seen your name on JBF and I’ve been here for about 3 and a half years. I’ve been a Buc fan for 16 years going on 17.

Suck it Lovie. You are either a liar or an idiot. Either way you can not coach, evaluate talent, develop talent, you are worthless! Another Autumn down the tube! #firelovie

  85. Sumo Says:

It breaks my heart to eve watch this team. I spend a lot of hard earned money to go in and watch these games. Where I am from, this would never stand. The city would be hanging folks in the street for this crap. It is embarrassing. The best thing all the fans can do is leave the stadium when they are getting beat like that. I left at 28-7. Not another minute could I stay in that seat.

  86. CC Says:

    _____________

Its smarter to defer? You wouldnt want your team to set the tone by scoring 1st? Something that weve rarely done?? But youd rather give the opponent a better chance of going on top 1st… with us playing from behind?? Which we seem to do every damn week now??

Its a passive mentality. It shows a lack of trust in your offense… And it blows up in your face when your defense is notorious for giving up scores on the opening drive.
