“A Guy That We Kind Of Had Our Eye On All Along”

The Bucs’ brand new quarterback was just too tempting to pass up

Lovie Smith talked about the Buccaneers’ shiny new quarterback signing today.

That’s Ryan Griffin, who was with the Saints in 2013, 2014, and through the 2015 preseason.

Lovie said he doesn’t know much about Griffin, but there’s long been a buzz at One Buc Palace for him.

“We’ve liked him as a player for a while, Dirk [Koetter], [quarterbacks coach] Mike [Bajakian], all of our [inaudible]; I don’t know a lot about him,” Lovie said. “He’s a guy that we kind of had our eye on all along.”

What’s most interesting here is Lovie was on record last year saying he’s not a carry-three-quarterbacks head coach. And then there’s that whole “Mike Glennon is the quarterback of the future” line.

Perhaps the Bucs have changed their stance on trading the allegedly in demand Glennon. Or Jameis Winston’s sprained ankle is a greater concern than the team is letting on.

This whole situation is looking bad because you draft QB #1 and playing games with another new QB unless they don’t want the Saints to have another Drew Brees.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is definately more than meets the eye here…..I really expect us to go with only 2 QBs with the 46……we will ship Griffin to the practice squad after his 3 required games….then, we’ll see.
We could simply be preparing for either an injury or an eventual Glennon trade and we wanted this guy as our backup.
The NO intel thing is simply a bonus.

  3. Wesley Says:

Figured we would have made a trade by now for either O-line or DE help, kind of disappointing. This team as is will be lucky if they win 6 games.

  4. cover deuce Says:

Flip the war giraffe for a serviceable DE and a late rounder!

  5. Dave Says:

the fact is Winston sucks and will be a bust. He is a flat footed slow QB in college in the ACC, He will be awful in the NFL,The Bucs will regret passing on Marriota and it will be shown next Sunday at Raymond James…… Marriota will go 21of31 for 304 yards and 2 TD Passes…….. Winston will go 9 of 30 for 103 yards and 3 INTS

  6. buc4life1979 Says:

Any way this can be looked at, the view is the same, and it’s a view of a ticking timebomb of some sort. Either Glennon or Griffin gets traded (hopefully for a starting DE) or there’s something much more to Winston’s ankle which would be the only way Lovie would roll with 3 qb’s.

I love how Lovie plays with the media. He has no responsibility on informing the media nor us about details inside One Bucs Palace.

Remember folks the media is a BUSINESS.

All I want from Lovie is to be “the Coach” and another SUPER BOWL while he is our coach!

In Lovie And Licht I TRUST!!!

  8. Casual Observer Says:

    Stay tuned.

  9. Pawel Says:

Doug Martin will win few games for us, our Oline is good for opening holes, there are teams with bigger problems than us. Go Bucs!

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

We have to have a QB in the pipeline for both injuries and future development.

I still like keeping MG8 as our backup until the end of the season. His value is growing not diminishing. We bought low and now let’s sell high. That’s the trick in investing.

In the offseason MG8 will have great value for any team without a settled QB situation. Teams can have him the entire off season and preseason and take a look for just $675,000 and that’s a steal for QB salaries.

We on the other hand don’t dump him for just a 3rd rounder…we use him and our first rounder to move up and get Joey Bosa!!!

Meanwhile we’ll have Griffen for a year on our PS and we can determine if he’s a qualified backup to #3.

BTW…I simply do not see how we do not start #3 this weekend. If he can walk he’s playing. The fan base would just go nuckin futs if they don’t get to see their shiny new toy.

  11. StPeteBucsFan Says:

An additional thought that gives me hope. Sounds like Lovie has surrendered the offense completely to Koetter incuding personnel decisions. Lovie only knew this guy through Koetter and Bajakian…that’s a good thing!

  12. Carl's Toe Says:

Look at that Barney Fife look! Where’s my headset? Who stole my challenge flag? He loves him, but knows nothing about him. Like Oniel Cousins…

  13. Hawk Says:

“We’ve liked him as a player for a while…; I don’t know a lot about him,” Lovie said.
So, just exactly what does he like about him if he doesn’t know a lot about him? This isn’t even ‘coach-speak’. I hope we see the reasoning behind this, real soon. If nothing changes in the next two weeks (OR if Griffen is outright released), this move will surpass anything yet done by the regime.

  14. Buccfan37 Says:

That’s the funniest pic of Lovie besides the one of him directing traffic. Looks like somebody gave him a fat lip.

  15. Getaclue Says:

You guys have comprehension problems. When he said we he says koetter and the qb coach, they have had their eye on him but lovie personally doesn’t know much about him

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    ?

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

On the surface this pickup makes little to no sense…..lets let this play out a couple of weeks and I can just about guarantee that it will ultimately make a lot of sense.

  18. Carl's Toe Says:

The bastard Glazer son who works for Fox, MMA’d Lovie! The family found out there are more Smith’s on the payroll than reported!

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Ryan Griffin and Pablo have much in common…….Lovie doesn’t know much about Pablo either….and Koetter & Bajakian like what they have seen of Pablo….Pablo’s table dancing……Pablo wishes everyone a happy labor day and for those who don’t want to work….Pablo thanks them too…because Pablo needs the work to feed Pablo’s many, many children”

  20. The Real Malloy Says:

tbbf, no way griffin goes on the practice squad, someone would scoop him up immediately. We’re keeping 3 or Glennon is on the trade block…

  21. thunderchunkyPA Says:

The only other team that put a claim on him was the Browns. I don’t get this either, why waster a spot on the 53 man with a QB who will never see the light of day? Hope they know something we don’t.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Real Malloy

We will see….but that’s a chance we will have to take….I don’t see us using 3 QBs as part of the 53 for long…..

  23. Nuc if u Buc Says:

Hall is back, praise da lawd

  24. Hawk Says:

Getaclue is right. Comprehension skills seem kind of low here.
“Lovie said he doesn’t know much about Griffin, but there’s long been a buzz at One Buc Palace for him.”
Gee whiz, if there’s “long been a buzz”, then the head coach cannot possibly know about it. Koetter & Co. haven’t been here all that long. You know the head coach would never want to find out about a player who has his staff all a buzz.
Then Lovie says…“We’ve liked him as a player for a while, Dirk [Koetter], [quarterbacks coach] Mike [Bajakian], all of our [inaudible]; I don’t know a lot about him,” Lovie said. “He’s a guy that we kind of had our eye on all along.”
The only thing that seems to fit [inaudible], is ‘defensive staff’. Surely, no one thinks the offensive staff was all a buzz about a QB. Again, is Lovie intentionally staying ignorant of a player that half his staff is drooling over, or is he being kept out of the loop by those who really wield the power?
No fair asking The Buc Realist for the answer. ;^)

  25. ptwalk Says:

Maybe this move is to get to know the saints offense better, that way we can be prepared to stop it.

  26. BoJim Says:

    About time. Glennon will start!!!!

  27. Lakeland Buc Says:

Once Ryan Griffin pickup this offense, Mike Glennon will be on the first thing smoking getting out of Tampa. I actually like our 5 waiver wire players, their additions makes a lot of sense. Ryan Griffin will be a quality backup, with starting potential. Jeremiah George and James Michael Johnson are excellent special team players, and also add depth at MIKE and SAM linebacker position.Kourtnei Brown will give us some depth at DE.Eric Kush gives us another center/guard combo player, now we have 3 on the roster. I’m looking for us to get a lot of pressure on Marcus Mariota this Sunday, he was sacked 31 times last season at Oregon. And he was sacked 66 times in his 3 year college career. We should be able to get pressure throughout the game, this game should be a cake walk for us. We will win the NFC South this season, Jameis Winston will win offensive rookie of the year. Kwon Alexander will have a great chance at winning defensive player of the year. LET’S GO GET EM BUCS

  28. ndog Says:

What is wrong with you people. Save in particular what is your deal? So slow feet is a sign of death for qbs? Tell that to Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady

  29. Wesley Says:

Looks like they’re keeping this guy, a trade would of already happened.

  30. Michael Duggan Says:

The fact of the matter is that Glennon will be traded this year or next and they need a guy who they can groom to be a back-up. Why does it have to be any more than that?

  31. Michael Duggan Says:

    A lot of teams carry 3 QB’s?

  32. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

No one wants Glennon. Or at least no one wants to trade for him. That should be obvious by now. And after dumping two quality OL (Penn and Zuttah), striking out with three over priced free agents, finishing with the worst record in the league, and conducting two drafts, we pluck five guys off waivers? Most in the NFL? And we still have no edge rusher and a terrible OL. This entire organization needs an enema. Maybe Urban will be ready to leave OSU after winning his fourth national title this season. Maybe the glazer boys will be ready to sell to Eddie D after another bad, losing season. I am hoping for the best, but damn, this looks so so familiar.

  33. Kevin Says:

It doesn’t get any more BUCS LIFE than this.

We draft a qb number 1 overall to save our franchise….and now were going to start Ryan Griffin week 1.

I mean seriously….it might piss us all off….but would it actually surprise ANYONE???!!!!

  34. ThunderSack Says:

    @Kevin

“We draft a qb number 1 overall to save our franchise….and now were going to start Ryan Griffin week 1. ”

What? How did you even come up with that? The people posting on this site never cease to surprise me.

  35. Drywaller Buc Says:

    @Kevin

Does he know the playbook yet? Are we talking josh freeman vikings style??? Cmon man grow a brain

  36. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Did we sign Tillman or not??

  37. Dave Says:

    Why all the mystery????
It is obvious that MG is going to be traded.

  38. Stanglassman Says:

Good to see the Bucs were able to Add TE Cameron Brate and WR Rennall Hall to the practice squad.

  39. Phil Says:

The Bucs play the Saints a week from Sunday. Maybe they brought him in to help the defense get ready for that game.

  40. DamnImFameis Says:

@Dave – you ARE an idiot and not a bucs fans. Get the hell off of this site. Nobody needs your depressing crap.
