So-So Day For Jameis

August 7th, 2015
jameis 0807

The ups and downs of rookie training camp continued for “America’s Quarterback” Friday.

Yesterday, Joe saw it with his own eyes. “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, looked every bit the part of a quarterback drafted No. 1 overall. He was sharp.

Today, Jameis was, well, just OK. As usual in his first few days of training camp, Jameis started out ragged, but he improved. Jameis had his moments but overall didn’t give you the Rachel Watson-tingly sensation of a guy who would lead the Bucs to the playoffs in January.

Jameis began the day by hanging a pass deep down the sideline that looked like a beer league softball can of corn to left field that cornerback Johnthan Banks camped under and caught.

Receivers didn’t help Jameis out a whole lot, either. He was victimized by drops. And, yes, there were throws that made your eyes pop out. One was where he threw open Adam Humphries coming out of a break that Humphries caught in stride, turned up-field and got about 12 yards.

There were also what looked to be sure touchdowns that the receivers either dropped or, for reasons unknown, batted up into the air for defenders to pick.

  2. tickrdr Says:

Can you please comment on the defenses called yesterday vs. today? Are they blitzing as frequently etc.

    tickrdr

  3. Destinjohnny Says:

Was at practice today and man the guy really stands tall in the pocket you can see that. You can also clearly see that he has good vision.
I think what is hurting Winston’s accuracy is his lack of leg strength. I was shocked at how skinny his legs are.
I still think mariota will be a top 5 qb and jameis will be between -10-15. I also think winston will have 4 int games that we still win cause he battles and is daddy clutch

  4. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

What??? Jameis had only an ok day after lighting it up? Blame Lovie because he made him make bad throws and the receivers dropped passes. Run for them thar hills y’all!

  5. Buc1987 Says:

    Where’s SuperSam and Jody?

I like those 2 guys. They only come to comment when Jameis does bad or has a so-so day.

I don’t really even know why they bother doing so though. They look like fools every time they come in. People attack them and for good reason, but that’s not why they look like fools.

They look like fools because the draft was 3 months ago and they are Bucs fans that can’t get over the fact that our team drafted JW. It bothers them so much that they only come to comment when something negative or even so-so is said about Jameis the QB of THEIR team.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

DestinJohnny…you care about this why? Because we play the Titans week 1?

  8. Buc1987 Says:

So do I put DestinJohnny in the Mariota Clingers Club?

  9. Destinjohnny Says:

No mate but whether u like it or not these two cats R joined at the hip.
Also let’s say marcus ends up being a top 3 qb and our guy is 15-20. Are you going to be stoked?? Games are won and loss on personel decisions. We had a chance to have Russell Wilson on steroids and we passed sorta like mark Barron and Luke k etc etc etc

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Destinjohnny…does it matter now though? Jameis was the pick…right?

So why don’t you wait and see what happens during the season instead of TC.

You’re obviously monitoring Mariota…for some reason. It doesn’t look to me like it’s just because he’s the QB we face in week 1. It certainly does not look that way if you’re linking stuff about him.

Are YOU a Bucs fan? Or a Titans fan? Or a right fighter? Do you want to be proven right that the Bucs picked the wrong guy? Even if you’re right and Mariota turns out to be the better of the two…what difference does it make now?

Again ARE YOU A BUCS FAN? Because some you I wonder about sometimes. If Mariota turns out to be the better of the 2 are you going to stop being a fan?

If not then quit bringing up Mariota and what he’s doing no matter if they are linked at the hip only because the Bucs COULD have and SHOULD have in your mind PICKED Marcus Mariota.

What’s the friggin point of it all? Can we still draft Mariota?

    NO we can’t!

  11. Buc1987 Says:

    That’s my proclamation Mariota Clingers!

No bro but if u read above im not all down on winston. He has some intangibles and will be a good qb. I am such a bucs fan that i hope I wrong but I have this weird abilty to scout a player and usually be spot on. I just cringe that we we’re so close to getting a true franchise qb and we let it slip away. So let me axe u if the titans win the Super Bowl and marcus is league MVP and winston is middle of the pack u never will say damn what if…..

Destinjohnny Says: ….”So let me axe u if the titans win the Super Bowl and marcus is league MVP and winston is middle of the pack u never will say damn what if…..”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO because I’m a effing Bucs fan. What if what? Am I the GM? Are you the GM? Support their decision and move on…

You should, probably, do something with this amazing gift that you possess. From what I can ascertain, it’s lucrative.

  18. DonaldKicker Says:

Yeesh, if Winston was from USC and people offered criticism or made comparisons to someone who may have been a better pick for the Bucs, no one would even raise an eyebrow. But, with the ever insecure FSU fans, it would seem that this train of thought is slightly akin to heresy and destinjohnny would be burned at the stake with the first light of dawn. Bummer

  19. Nodak Pirate Says:

Well said 87. Jaboo is our QB, stand with him or get out of our way. The Bucs are on the rise! Even if MM is better than Jaboo, Jaboo will be awesome for the Bucs and lead us back into relevance.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

LOL LWD..I’ve been laying low, but one BIG TIME Bucs fan can only take so much.

  21. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @87

What I am envisioning it that we can ALL secure a nestegg for our future. All we need is this guy to give us his thoughts on the 2016 draft. I mean, I don’t know HOW we discovered someone who’s not even a professional, and STILL is usually SPOT ON at SCOUTING players on a pluckly little Bucs fan site, but I’m not looking a gift horse in the mouth. So SHHHH, we gotta a golden goose.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

    LOL LWD LOL

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

Love and Dunn and 87 weren’t you 2 brain surgeons big Mason Foster fans??? Seems like i remember you both giving me the business on him when i said he was below average???
How we looking on that one boys??

  24. Buc1987 Says:

DestinJohnny…no and how does it if feel to hold onto something(Mariota) you can never have?

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Mariota WON’T EVER be a Buccaneer.

    EVER.

You can CLING to him all you want, but he’s NOT part of your team!

That’s JUST a fact. A fact that you STILL can’t deal with. That’s why you’re linking us Buc fans to articles telling us just how good Mariota is doing in training camp.

That’s the mere definition of what I call a Mariota Clinger. You can’t let go of something we will never have on our team. That’s a Mariota Clinger. Congrats!

  26. chris Says:

87, but if he flames out like other Buc qbs of the past….will you smash him like you did Freeman?

  27. milenko Says:

How good again is Titans D? Psssh

  28. Ski-Bucs Fan Says:

DestinyJohnny, has it ever occured to you that the Titans are bringing him up slowly and not throwing the book at him like we are with Jameis? It doesn’t matter who you “axe” Jameis was teh #1 Pick for a reason and the other guy wasn’t! I am a BUCS FAN and don’t give a damn about any other team. I am one of the few REAL BUCS FANS on this site having season tickets since day one, not a “Johnny” come Lately like yourself. Get with the program or go root for your boywonder in Tennessee.

  29. Eric Hughes Says:

Guys and Gals….something that everyone needs to know is that Jameis hasn’t been analyzed like this during any football practice EVER. The media for college teams is limited in their practice coverage. One of the things that was reported on regularly during his days at FSU, 3 years worth, was that he was always up and down during practice, but when the bright lights come on and it matters most Jameis performs and that is evident by his 26-1 career. In other words, it is not surprising to see this up and down performance so far based on the last 3 years I have followed him as a NOLE.

I’m not making excuses for him. Just giving some insight to how he performed in practice through college and the similarities so far. For another example, even during high school it would be reported that when he was on the camp circuits, like the Elite 11, he would be up and down throughout the camp until the competition portion, brightest lights, of the camp started. Then you’d see the switch flipped and he would be the best on the field.

Point being is that I wouldn’t worry about Jameis and some practice sessions. The kid is still learning, it’s his rookie year, and he has time to adjust to the game, he will be up and down throughout pre-season practice and that should be expected of a rookie.

Looks like Jameis does a better job when he does a play more than once. He must have been doing some new stuff on Friday. Bet he cleans those up when he repeats those plays.

Marpet looked like a beast! One play, he took a GMC bullrush and redirected him away from the play. It was amazing!

I also couldn’t believe the holes our OL opened up for Dougie and Sims. Can you say running game?

“87, but if he flames out like other Buc qbs of the past….will you smash him like you did Freeman?”

Freeman had 4 and 1/2 seasons. This kid is just a rookie. I can tell you one thing I won’t be one of the clingers waiting to pounce on him after week 1 if the Bucs should lose to Mariota. Or if he has a rough rookie season.

  35. MOBucs Says:

I think it’s crucial to point out that Mariota is not being blitzed yet. Zero pressure. Jameis is. The two are being treated the same in practice.

  36. DonaldKicker Says:

I can honestly say, I want Winston to do good and I am sure others on here that said he does, all want him to do good. But, yep there is always a but, lol, he is being thrown into a situation, where he has no offensive line, zip. The most common block last year was the bullfighter block…toro. I see this, and how last year for FSU, when Winston faced any pressure, like say against Louisville, he has a propensity to just force the ball and hope something good happens, which ends up in interceptions…lots of them. Now, he may have gotten away with that in college, where the talent gap is huge, but here in the NFL, all the teams/players he will face are just as fast and the coverages he will face are complex. He won’t be PLAYING Wake Forrest or NC State. What scares me is how much of a pounding he will take and with a pass rush that is always going to be in his face, we have the possibility of him being another Vinny Testaverde, when he played for the Bucs. Vinny would put up massive numbers with yards passed, but also throw 5 picks. It really wasn’t his fault, he had three seconds tops to throw Sooo, with this being the case, the Bucs neededa QB that is a dual threat, which is Mariota, who when the pocket collapses, has the jets to hit the flats with his feet, to keep an a defense honest. I realize their is no going back and Winston is our guy, with the exception of the Dungy years, and just before Tony came here, the Bucs made good picks, but this one did not make any sense.I know FSU fans think Winston is looked upon as someone who can do no wrong…on the field…but that Oregon game, he looked lost. I personally think that game was foreshadowing what his Bucs experience, will be like. So I am making a prediction, and if I am wrong, so be it, it just means the Bucs will be doing good, but I think we are about to witness the second coming of Vinny Testaverde, moments of brilliance, dominated by moments of madness. Also, I want to get this out in the open, I don’t know who said that, and probably paraphrasing here, that we should not question the Bucs and just accept their decisions and be blind followers. Then what is the point of this board? Now, that mentality, might work in countries like Cuba, China, Iran and Russia lol, but some of us have a mind of our own and chose to use it. You can be an apologist all you want, but I am going to be an unemotional observer, which means I don’t care what college team anyone played for. This is a NFL site, not a college one, so ya’ll need to get over all the being butt hurt (Looking right at you FSU fans) when someone views things with a critical eye about a player from your favorite college team, that’s bush league, homer crap you need to take back to the college message boards.

  37. DonaldKicker Says:

Also (Looking right at myself) some of us need to proof read what we write…sorry about that, for the grammar mistakes and possible spelling mistakes..suumm off use isti nutt pufect 😉

  38. NoleFan Says:

The only time Jameis and Mariota faced off, Jameis showed himself, by far, the superior quarterback. FSU lost that game on the poor play of his supporting cast. Any objective viewer/evaluator, who isn’t holding on to some misguided opinion based on non-football issues, understands that Jameis will be a game changer in the NFL. In no reality does Marcus Mariota have a better career than Jameis Winston.

  39. DonaldKicker Says:

One more last last thing GO BUCS!!!…Winston and the rest of the Bucs prove me wrong…please or it’s the creamsicle pants and Bucco Bruce for you and no soup for you as well

  40. Destinjohnny Says:

Donald Kicker Ray Coach would be proud man!!!! I say the same thing prove me wrong. I love the guys moxie and his swagger and his play in the clutch. I guess I should let the fact we drafted Caddy instead of Aaron Rodgers go and about 400 other mistakes the bucs front office has made. Time to follow blindly like like the rest of you. Its kinda liberating to let someone else do all my thinking. 16-0 here we come!!!

  41. Buc1987 Says:

“I should let the fact we drafted Caddy instead of Aaron Rodgers go”

Yes you should that was about 10 years ago.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

DonaldKicker…how did Mariota look against Ohio?

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    State!

  44. Stanglassman Says:

    Destinjohnny
I hate to beak it to you but the draft is much easier when you do it years later. Until you can show us some proof that you were pounding the table for Rogers before the pick it’s just second guessing. That’s easy my man. As far as Luke K. goes everyone wanted the bucs to draft him. The bucs decided they liked or needed an OLB more than MLB and thought they could get LVD in a later pick. If they would have got LK they wouldn’t have pick LB so no LVD. I think we got the better player for a lower pick. I just hope you’re young because it’s common for youngsters to think they know it all but it’s sad not to mention annoying when it a grown man acts like it.

  45. RustyRhinos Says:

Donaldkicker, Great Rant brother kick it all out!

I also agree with the Humprhies sighting is a great thing,

  46. Destinjohnny Says:

Does anyone remember where the me Donald kicker came from!? It’s great bucs history

  47. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

It’s ironic the word butt hurt is being used. The people happy for the rants pining for Mariota and predicting Winston’s weaknesses in the pros are doing nothing..nothing, but repeating what was said before the draft by people who wanted Mariota drafted, and have been butt hurt EVER SINCE.

So, sorry if I don’t consider this to be some sort of revelation. Same for the Bucs coaching staff. Same for the Bucs front office. Same for the Glazers. It’s all been said predraft. They disagree with you.

But, by all means, knock yourself out. I would suggest just going back to some posts in the last week of April and just copying and pasting. Or just type it all out again.

  50. DonaldKicker Says:

Buc1987, I think the problem Mariota had with OSU was he could not stop laughing at beating FSU by 40 points ;)…now, let’s all sit back and see how this all plays out…and yes, , once again, I hope Winston proves me wrong, that means the Buc are winning. I will gladly come back in here and say I was wrong. But, with their O line its going to be hard sledding for him. The Bucs have a long history of getting their qb’s destroyed. Chris Simms almost got killed What upgrades have they made, despite drafting the kid from Penn State.

  51. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Trust me donald he was way too punch drunk to remember anything that occurred in our game.

  52. DonaldKicker Says:

Still, 40 points, that must of been hard? The funniest thing was FSU fans asking Alabama fans what happened against OSU. Alabama fans looked at FSU fans like, “What happened to us? Dude, y’all lost by 40 points, to a team in day glow uniforms. What is wrong with you FSU fans?” . When I go back and look at that whole playoff system, the true national title game was the Alabama Ohio State game. But, back to the Bucs..lets all wait and see now.

  53. Destinjohnny Says:

Ya fsu was a hoax last year. A ton of talent best o- line in football. Even the year they beat AU. Auburn was the 4th best team in the sec that year.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

“A ton of talent best o- line in football.”

Yep that’s why Jameis was running for his life a lot last season.

  55. Buc1987 Says:

Donald yet most FSU fans saw it was gong to be a blowout anyways before the game. I said it numerous times on these here pages that FSU was going to get blown out way way way before the game was played. So no surprise to me when it happened or bitterness at all.

  56. Buc1987 Says:

    lol LWD

  57. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

But I’m curious Donald whose your college team. And I’ll remind you,I still find it quite peculiar how we all of sudden became fumblidous university but I’ll leave that alone what’s done is done. Famous will surely get some payback week one of the season.

  58. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And 87 is correct we all knew what was coming. I had beaten a co-worker of mine the previous three games on 100 dollar bets of the outcome of FSU games. I was about to bet on the Oregon game all gung-ho and s@$! but I caught a Game day clip going into a commercial, they took a camera inside FSU’s locker room. They put the camera on Jamie’s shoulder pads and helmet and said and I quote”this will be Jamies WINSton last collegiate game”. I immediately called my co-worker and told him no bet this week dawg. He was mad because he was trying to re-coup all the money from the previous bets. I declined. He disliked Jamies because he’s a fan of another Florida program I won’t say which one. But ultimately we came up short. Gladly I had caught that clip. Save me 300 bones.
