No Rest For Jameis

Imagine the whirlwind that “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, has been through this year.

First, he was grilled by many NFL teams interested in his services, bouncing from city to city, all the while working on improving his mechanics.

Then, after being selected by the Bucs, he moved to a new city, needed to learn his teammates and a brand new playbook, and, oh yeah, still improve on his craft working from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Jameis must improve, so he told the Tampa Bay pen and mic club yesterday after practices. In so many words, Jameis said he has no other option.

“I have no choice,” Jameis said. “We are installing new plays every single day. Different reads, different progressions and I’m throwing to different people all the time. So I have no choice but to get better every day. If I chose to take a day off, it wouldn’t be smart.”

Not smart? It would be downright dumb. He’s apparently done enough to earn the starting gig and if he decided to rest his laurels now, then Jameis very well could lose that gig, and maybe his career.

Jameis isn’t like that. The dude strives to be the best he can be. Gerald McCoy attested to how early Jamies is working in the weight room daily.

Joe doesn’t think there is any place in Jameis’ heart to suddenly slam on the brakes and relax. Not when there is football to be played.

I appreciate the reports on Jameis’ progress…..but there is certainly a bit of overselling going on. It’s sort of like buying a new car and having the salesman call you continually telling you what a great decision you made and how wonderful the car is.
I just feel we need to dampen expectations just a bit.

Jameis has a whole team counting on him to become an elite NFL QB. That’s surely provides a lot of motivation for a 21-year old rookie QB to get up-to-speed quickly.

Besides, he’s living his dream. Why would he want to take a day off?

    @tbbf

Agreed! I’m also concerned he isn’t getting enough rest. That will definitely hamper performance. It’s essential to let the body recoup and for the mind to get enough REM. 4-5 hrs of sleep a night isn’t enough.

    Joe,

What do you think of all the reports that Mariota has had a flawless camp? Is it possible that they are challenging him as much as the Bucs are challenging Jameis? They do have a legendary defensive coach over there who could make things very difficult for Marcus in camp if they wanted to rattle him.

  5. Luther Says:

Let’s see how flawless he is when he’s facing zone blitzes. Training camp isn’t like live action.

I think there’s a risk of breaking his confidence by throwing advanced level defense at him this early. It’s going to be interesting to watch Mariotta, who is apparently going against prevent type defenses as they teach him their offense. We get both extremes with these two in terms of approach, or at least it seems.

I get that Lovie wants to rush the process along; I would too. But, from the outside looking in, it’s starting to look like he’s getting off on causing Winston difficulty.

That said, Koetter knows how to work with young quarterbacks, and so maybe this is the best path forward.

We’ll know soon enough, and the ride should be fun.

You might be right kaput about Lovie getting off on challenging him. But between the combination of his mind and skill set that’s exactly what he needs. It would be a complete waist of time to baby Jamies along.

Mariota is a much better quarterback than certain people here give him credit for. He might struggle in year one…maybe even a little in year two…but eventually he’ll become elite.

Winston is our quarterback. We support him 100%. He’s been doing the right things, behaving the right way (at TC I mean). He’s trying to gel with his weapons.

There will be comparisons between the two of them for their entire careers, unless one busts, which I doubt will happen. Even if it does, the comparisons will still be there. Leaf is never talked about unless Peyton is mentioned, even now.

We just have to keep in mind that the methods used to prepare these quarterbacks are very different because of their playing styles.

Winston is a passer, so he’s got to become more accustomed to passing and pass rush. Mariota is a runner, so his team will structure his development around that. Prevent offense limits passing. There is no real pass rush. He can scramble to his hearts desire. That’s why his picks are low.

    Prevent defense I mean.

Bonzai I just touched on a little bit of what you just said in the Message Boards.

    @TBBF,
Although I 100% agree with you! this is the only time of year when we can just take in all the love! drink the Kool Aide, believe in our Bucs the they can win the SB. Reality (or TheRealist), will be here soon enough.

Don’t you believe that this is the year McCoy becomes Sapp reincarnate? Or that Marpet will instantly blossom into Carl Nicks (in his prime, not the one with the funky toe), or our 3rd rd draft pick RB from last year (who should have been a OG) will show us his Matt Forte, not even that Mankins is back to his Pro Bowl self? I need to go drink some more Kool Aide, I killed my buzz!

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Harry

Sure, I think this is the year…..I think that every year at this time….just the way I am…..but the deal with the overselling of Winston is sort of like dessert…..I like it…but if somebody said:

How would you like some Pecan Pie, and then Chocolate Cake, then some Creme Brulet, then Moose, then Cherry Pie, then Bannana Split and top it off with some Peach Cobbler?

Just simply an overdose for me…..

  13. Harry Says:

    TBBF,
You forgot chocolate chip cookies, dude. I LOVE CC cookies. Take it in my friend. We only have a few weeks to enjoy our sugar high before we CRASH! Lol

  14. Harry Says:

“…awaiting moderation…”. So annoying! Why? Because I mentioned chocolate chip cookies?! Lmao

I believe Jameis has vision problems. Bucs need a current eye exam.
