Day (Night) 1 Training Camp Notes – Part 1

August 1st, 2015
Day1Practicedefense

Rain pounded the Bucs’ defense on the field and on the sidelines.

As you know by now, the Bucs delayed, rescheduled, cancelled and then relocated their first training camp practice to the University of South Florida this evening. The driving rain really makes it almost unfair to judge practice, but the Bucs were extraordinarily sloppy — far too sloppy. Here are a chunk of Joe’s observations from the sidelines.

*As usual, practice started (about 7 p.m.) with stretching and drill work by position. It’s still underwear football, aka no pads, but there was more intensity than the typical spring practice — much more.

*When 7-on-7 work got going, the offense was definitely in a fast rhythm. Jameis Winston is a very commanding and confident cat. He didn’t look timid at all. Joe also will say there was plenty of contact dancing on the line of legal contact under NFL rules. No, Joe’s not saying the Bucs were breaking rules, but the intensity led to contact. Rookie Donovan Smith got a talking to for what seemed to be pulling defensive end Lawrence Sidbury to the turf.

*Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach, whose raspy voice is almost lost already, had words for T.J. Fatinikun for not finishing a play in 11-on-11 work. It seemed like the whistle should have blown after Jameis Winston didn’t throw in a few seconds, but it didn’t. And Fatinikun let up in his pursuit.

*As Joe’s documented, the Bucs were so sloppy in the rain. Damn, Joe’s never seen anything like it.

*Drop! Kenny Bell. (It wasn’t really raining yet.)

*Leonard Johnson breaks up a pass. Nice coverage.

*Here comes the rain.

*Drop! Tim Wright.

*Drop! Robert Herron.

*Two fumbled exchanges from Evan (Dietrich) Smith to Jameis Winston.

*Near pick by Major Wright on Jameis. Nice effort.

*Jameis overthrows Mike Evans.

*Nicely designed Jameis rollout right, but, of course, ball is dropped 15 yards downfield by Tavarres King.

*Screen to Charles Sims. Sweet, sweet touch by Jameis on the toss.

*Jameis fires into Austin Seferian-Jenkins’ gut. Drop!

*Prettiest throw of the evening so far. Mike Glennon throws a deep touch pass down the left flank to wide receiver Rannell Hall.

*Jameis and Russell Shepard with a solid connection over the middle.

*Lovie Smith calls Lavonte David to his side for a few intense talks. For one, linebacker Orie Lemon joined and Lovie got very intense talking to Lemon.

*Bad snaps aren’t just for Jameis. Glennon and center Josh Allen have one, too. If the Bucs play in the rain this year, expect Joe to wager against them.

*Jameis connects in the left seam about 20 yards to Mike Evans. Great hands on the high, but not too high, throw.

*Rain is easing up as Glennon connects with King.

Joe will have more notes on Sunday morning.

If you really to do it, but why bother. Just say drop. End of story.

I still appreciate that you stuck it out for us today Joe. The rain must have sucked for the press as well as the players.

Rain is part of the Home Field Advantage in Florida too
Better to be sloppy now than to be sloppy when it counts
    Play on

Actually, training camp is usually so freaking broiling. Watching practice at night in the rain (Joe has an umbrella) was such a relief, Joe actually enjoyed it, despite how sloppy it was.

Do the bucs have a field at one buc that is field turf? like they would see in new orleans or atlanta? With no i door field at least they may have this? Also why not ask the trop to use as a backup venue? Its indoors and rays out of town

Joe yeah but the delay? I mean did you wait it out in Tampa at some Dunkin Donuts or something? We all know you like to get there early so you had to be in Tampa around 1 PM, or so. That’s what I meant by sticking it out for us.

EVS up to the same old tricks. This time he can blame the rain…but what about next time?

Ali Marpet will become our starting center at some point.

  9. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Is there anyway some more objective can report on Winston? Joe is only going to say good things about him. Dude might turn out elite, but he isn’t going to be perfect.

Only for the first couple weeks, and then the rain comes less often.

    Perhaps Buc Nation or ESPN?

Thanks. Got there at 11 a.m. Stayed at One Buc until they told us about the night practice. Then hustled out to USF.

That door is open. Fans don’t like it, but coaches LOVE practicing in the rain. Gotta learn how to handle the ball in the rain sometime. Wasn’t like they were practicing in a lightning storm.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Oh well 60% chance of rain tomorrow. So maybe they can practice more out in the rain again. Bring your umbrella again Joe.

Not really. Some of the biggest downpours have been in December. Remember the game where Warren Sapp made Kordell Stewart cry? That was in December in a monsoon. Also, the NFC Central division-clinching win in 1979 against the Chiefs where the field was underwater? That was December as well.

Seriously joe. I dont think you understand the service you probide us fans. An intimate take from someone who can be closer to the team than us. You feed our fandom. And are often a voice of reason, and often the opposite polarizing voice when we fans need someone to rail against. Thank you. Fan since 2009ish.

Wow, thanks for the kind words man. Much appreciated. Humbled. Thanks for being a loyal reader.

I hope through all this bad weather and the upcoming broiler the coaches have the players realizing that they are building a home field advantage.

Hey BucBonzai, Joe stated their were two fumbled center snaps, he didn’t state who was at fault. Because of your prejudice, u blamed Smith.
That makes you look stupid or ignorsnt. Which do u prefer.

As Joe stated, every quarterback, every center, every receiver was dropping footballs right and left. However, Evan Smith has a nasty history of fumbled snaps, no matter the quarterback. Last night, however, he was not alone.

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    In your face, drdneast! lol

I was also in the stands for that 3-0 win over the Chiefs in the downpour at Tampa Stadium in December 1979. That was a wet lot of fun.
