A new Lovie Smith story offers insight into the head coach’s style

Maybe it’s no surprise that Da’Quan Bowers and Jorvorskie Lane were busted last year under the NFL substance abuse policy for using (allegedly) banned drugs to lose weight.

A current Buccaneer explained that Lovie Smith shoots it real straight when it comes to excess flab.

Bucs linebacker Danny Lansanah joined Jenna Laine of SportsTalkFlorida.com and said Lovie’s direct style changed his career.ย The head coach approached him last spring during OTA sessions and told him, “I’m about to say three words to you. What do you think I’m about to say?”

Lansanah replied, “I don’t know.”

Lovie’s next words were, per Lansanah,ย “You are fat.”

Lansanah went on to explain it was a harsh wake-up call and he returned to training camp down 20 pounds to 230.

A Dominik-Schiano signing, Lansanah went on to start at all three linebacker positions and play pretty well, including three interceptions.

Props to Lovie for finding the right way to motivate Lansanah. Man, Joe sure hopes Lovie doesn’t get ahold of Joe after a feast at Hooters.

I was in New York City for that game DB. I remember it well. The front desk had to call me three times to tell me to keep the noise down. In New York City no less……..Jeeesh

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Was that the game where Sapp leveled Warner on the INT return for a TD?

That was one of the greatest hits I’ve ever seen…

WS99 , thanks for that video, man that take me back I couldn’t watch the game,I was too nervous. Warrick Dunn had a monster night, and Shaun King had a career night, but it’s amazing how big Shaun King is now, wow he must be eating pretty good lol. These backs with the Bucs now should watch tapes of Warrick Dunn, man did he have heart. One play I remember isn’t in the video, was when 3 Rams had him in the end zone for a safety and Warrick Dunn broke free from them and brought the ball out of the end zone. Warrick Dunn all world a really class act.He even ran better with the Falcons, him Michael Vick and T.J Duckett.

    @ WS99

Hellz yea man. That was the best bucs game I’ve ever been to as well. Just an amazing game.

Seeing Dunn go to the falcons really soured me on him. Even now I don’t like to think about it lol. But putting that aside, come to think of it he’s one of my favorite bucs of all time. Wish he never would have left. He was a great running back and I would like to see him in the ring of honor one day.

I almost got thrown out of that game for trying to break up a Bucs/Rams fight next to ship. LOL Best game ever! Besides the superbowl of course

Truth is I don’t remember much about that night except arguing with a Rams fan about marshall Faulk vs Dunn and Dunn having prob the best game of this career. It was the best in “your face moment” ever. The stadium was shaking I think all of tampa was shaking.

The video of the entire game is on YouTube if you wanna see it. The highlights were awesome. Now that’s how a TEAM plays ball.

I think that’s why I’m so hard on lovie and our beloved Pink Fluffy Unicorns bc I have games like these burned into my brain. Did you see that sack by 99? Hehehe lol ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Dave Says:

    The video is great.
    The song sucks.
    Lynch decorating Faulk was awesome.
    But…..
WS99— arguing Dunn over Faulk???? Come on man. Let’s get a little objective. I love WD but Faulk is an all timer, WD is just a Buc all timer.

  20. WS99 Says:

    Dave

I was at the game arguing with a Rams fan, what would you expect for me to say faulk is better? Get the faulk outta here. COMEONMAN!!! Ride or die baby! It’s a bucs life for me!!!

  21. Tom Says:

This is actually comforting to hear. Lovie is such a calm emotionless guy, I get worried about his ability to motivate

  22. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Love might get a divorce if his wife packs on the pounds!! Lol!! GO BUCS!!!
