Mike Evans: Division Elite

Division elite, says NFL.com.

Joe has to qualify the following lest readers think otherwise: Joe never ever takes a day off. Doesn’t for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, Easter or Arbor Day. So, unlike the NFL, Joe does not go into a six-week slumber each summer.

So with the NFL in nap mode, everyone seems to have a list. This time, it’s smarmy Dave Dameshek of NFL.com trying to be serious (Joe thinks). Dameshek has an All-NFC South team and, for wide receivers, a certain Bucs player is ranked on his starting squad along with Julio Jones. That would be Mike Evans.

Evans had a splendid pro debut last season, putting up 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns despite catching passes from subpar quarterbacks in Tampa Bay. Now that Evans has Jameis Winston throwing him the ball, look out.

Joe is starting to think Evans may just blow up this year. It was something Logan Mankins, the barbecue pitmaster, told Joe this week. When asked about the difference between ill-suited acting offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo and this year’s offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, Mankins remarked how it was nice to have an OC who can read defenses.

Rim shot, please.

Mind you, Evans had a monster year as a rookie with little to no coaching. Then, in the offseason, Evans worked out with Randy Moss and brags how Moss was just teeming with knowledge.

It should be very interesting to see how Evans establishes himself in his sophomore season.

  2. Jackson Says:

Yeah, uh this was posted days ago on NFL.com. A bit late on this “report.” Wake up call, Joe.

  3. Ray Rice Says:

River Boat Ron isn’t too happy with Benjamin according to reports. He came into camp over weight. Not a good sign. Also, according to a different report ODB in NY is letting all the hype and rookie success get to his head. He went off to the media about his teammates ribbing him for sitting out with another hamstring injury. So glad we got Savage Mike!

    You’re damn right look out.

Everything’s going to be rainbows and unicorns next season!

  5. Joe Says:

Um, Jackson, maybe you werent aware, but Joe was at minicamp this week. If this article was so important that it needed to be written about immefiately, how come you didnt email Joe this precious breaking news?

The Buccaneers are going to be plundering some booty next yar!!! Argh!!!

  7. Señor Mofo Says:

Evans put up great rookie numbers as the go-to receiver in a one-dimensional offensive scheme with a rotation of average to below-average QBs running for their lives and often throwing to him out of desperation.

He will be a monster yet again, but I wouldn’t necessarily expect his numbers to be all that much better. We have a legit OC this year, and the ball will be spread around much more efficiently.

  8. Casual Observer Says:

And I remember how upset Joe was when the Bucs drafted him last year. Pouted for weeks.

  9. Hawk Says:

I have been coming here for a while, Joe, and I have always thought you were a little ‘off’. It is why I keep coming back. :^)

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    lol Hawk…so that’s what it is…

  11. Hawk Says:

If you have been a Buccaneer fan for very long, you are DEFINITELY a little ‘off’.

  12. WS99 Says:

Carolina’s receivers scare me, they are huge and Benjamin got game I think their rookie might have game too. Benjamin broke a thousand yards too with a back-up mainly.

Odb made history last year. It’s not like the g-men got a lot of weapons so don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

God I hope you’re NOT talking about Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows, we had waaaaaayyyyy too much of that last year. And of course mr.buccaneers himself brought more ice cream for the team this year. I already told him to feed the team nails and concrete but he won’t listen.

Mike Evans will have a good year, but i’m also looking for Vincent Jackson, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Doug Martin to have a good season also in the recveiving game.

  14. HarlemBuc Says:

@WS99 totally agree on Carolina receivers
Two things tho: our defense practices against giant rcvrs everyday… And Cam is overrated imo

CONGRATULATIONS! There is nothing better than seeing a person find their passion and enjoy life. I love this on the Bucs where it occurs as well It’s one of the major selling points you guys made to me on Jameis. He clearly loves life and what he’s doing.

Do not take what you have for granted. Not everyone follows their passion. I just retired but in another life I remember during a college basketball season where I did a weekly coaches TV show, radio pbp of the games and anchored 6-11PM sportscasts when I was in town. That year I didn’t have a single day off from New Year’s Day until St Patrick Day. It was awesome But you guys have me veat!!!!

Harlem buc not only is Cam overrated his downfield passing accuracy is atrocious. He ranked 2nd to last in the league in pass efficiency of attempts 20 yards or more last season. Now that Jimmy is out the division in my opinion the biggest threat on an opposing team in our division is Julio up there in ATL.

  18. Joe Says:

@Casual Observer – Stop making stuff up. Joe never pouted for weeks, or even days, that the Bucs drafted Mike Evans. Joe has archives here for those interested in real history..

@StPeteBucsFan — Appreciate your sentiment, but Joe is passionate about the Bucs and football and women, not working. If Joe felt he could, Joe would work a lot less and watch a lot more football and women.
