What the heck happened to Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, the guy who stood at the NFL Scouting Combine podium in February and said he planned to win the Super Bowl in February, 2016?

Remember these words?

“I’m not into no competition type of thing. I’m out here to win games and be the face of someone’s franchise. This is not no competition just between me and Mariota. One thing about me, I plan on winning the Super Bowl next year. I want it to be Jameis versus Peyton Manning. Jameis versus Tom Brady…. I want to be viewed like that. After all this combine stuff, you’re not going to hear no more about Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, but I want my name to stay relevant for the next 15 to 20 years.” Jameis at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, as typed by USA Today.

Tonight, Jameis was a different man chatting with Tiffany Blackmon of NFL Network at the NFL Rookie Symposium in Ohio.

Jameis was asked by Blackmon, “Being the No. 1 overall pick, there’s a lot of expectations, but what would you consider a successful season at the end of the year?”

And Jameis replied: “Me going out there and playing my best, you know, and doing good.” That closed the interview.

Damn, Joe is bummed out. Where’s the real Jameis? Joe will speculate the about face comes because Jameis doesn’t like the Bucs’ chances (now that he knows what team he’s on) or he was mesmerized by Blackmon, or he’s thoroughly exhausted following a pre- and post-draft whirlwind.

Maybe he just got a taste of what it is really going to be like when he plays with/against NFL talent… reality.
I see nothing wrong with setting his goal as “… going out there and playing my best, you know, and doing good,”
That is all I want from each player… every week.

  2. LandoCommando Says:

I think it is inherently evident that Jameis’ goal is to win the Super Bowl. His response is indicative of rookie who has the right mindset at this stage of his career. He will have his chance to make big promises and speak for the franchise, but right now he should focus on being the best player he can be.. the rest will take care of itself. Hopefully he will be able to stay upright in the pocket long enough to do so..

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Maybe he learned just how nasty some of our fans can be…

  4. The Real Malloy Says:

Maybe he’s growing up and eating a little humble pie?

  5. Stanglassman Says:

I thought all the NFL teams and players were planning on winning the Superbowl next year. If not what are they doing?

  6. tmaxcon Says:

maybe he realized very fast like most sensible people that you can not win with Laughable Lovie and his dinosaur system running the show.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

I put this down earlier in the Sims thread and it applies here as well.

“How come most Buc fans expect instant success from rookies?

Or even rookies that had surgery prior to the regular season.

It just seems to me that Bucs fans are the most impatient fans in the NFL when it comes to coaches or rookies.

If had a nickel for every time I heard someone call McCoy a bust…..”

Which is where I came up with “how nasty some of our fans can be”.

Some of these fans are going to be expecting huge things if he keeps talking huge things and if that doesn’t happen year one they will be all over the kid for saying what he saying the things he said in the off-season. So perhaps he has good reason to dial it back a bit.

To some Buc fans Simms is a bust after one rookie season where he saw little playing time, same with Herron and Pamphile.

Again… if had a nickel for every time I heard someone call McCoy a bust….

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

Between Lovie and the lack of talent on this team, he now knows that it will be battle to get 3rd in the NFC South division!!!

  9. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

At the combine he was talking to become the number one pick. Now that it worked, no need to put on the show.

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Tmax and buc the??? how about y’all get all off Lovie’s nutt $ac. You two along with the rest of your village people homeboys remind me of those young girls back in elementary that would physically hit you to express a level of endearment towards you.

That’s the meds making me loopy again.

I have to admit that Lovie is great at teaching his players what to say. He better at talking points than papa Reilly. He earns straight A’s in my book.

    Hold up now.

First, it’s “Sims”, not “Simms”. I just pointed that out to get your goat…we all mispell these names from time to time. 😉

Second, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone calling him a bust. But he hasn’t proven he’s NOT a bust yet either. I agree, he didn’t have much playing time and the oline sucked. But the oline excuse holds for all our RBs.

Thirdly, I see promise in Sims, but he was STILL a wasted pick for the Bucs. They should have taken OLINE with that pick. That alone makes it a blown pick.

Think about if they had taken Oline with that pick and it worked out. Say Center or Left Tackle. Add the guard and RT from this years draft, and we would have a pretty solid line this year.

So Sims was a bad pick for the Bucs because it slowed the development of our offensive line.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Yes Bonzai…I agree they should have went o-line, but that was back when they were still thinking Nicks was gonna be alright or atleast suggesting it.

If Sims turns out to be the next Barry Sanders. How much of a wasted pick is it then? Not saying I see that in him. Just saying.

Now I KNOW you’re just talking about Joe and JBF right?

I can find 1000’s of more negative articles about Jameis if you like?

  18. Eric Says:

To Jameis going out and playing good means winning the Super Bowl.

    ………………………..
Are you smoking crack bro? You DO remember me right??? Jeesh man. Why are you acting so weird after JW gets drafted. I told everyone you would go back to normal.

  23. Ray Rice Says:

    @JOE

I will tell you what happened. THE MESSIAH and Koetter broke down enough film of last year’s OL that made him say, “FUK THAT. How am I supposed to win a SB with this weak FUK rolling the ball on the ground to me.”

  24. Berdj J. Rassam Says:

Sounds like Jameis is starting to get a heavy dose of reality.

  25. DayOnePaul Says:

Licht needs to stop wearing the non-flattering work out tops. “You’re the GM of an NFL franchise, Jason. Wear a freakin’ suit!” Or if you must pose for photo ops with the 20 year olds, at least go to the gym once in a while, or hire a lighting director so I never have to see the shadow of those man chi-chis again.

Case closed. Please Joe, have some dignity and don’t post articles about this. It’s hardly a losers mentality is it?!

  27. Ryan Says:

Everybody already forget GMAC’s words of advice? “Be a rookie, not a rah rah guy.” To me it just looks like Jameis listened and took the advice of a team leader.

i’ll gladly get off lovies arse when he starts winning. he is paid to win not to make excuses and bad decisions all day.

  29. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

tmax with the addition of a bonafide OC,a defenSe going into year two of the scheme along with a young thundercat rookie QB whose hell bent on being one of the great ones this squad can only do one thing and that’s begin winning. Just do me a small favor and be a big boy and give props to the same HC you along with a few other liberally take shots at everyday.

    Winner! I totally agree.

  32. RCH Says:

Or he is trying to not put a target on his back since he hasn’t played a down in the NFL yet.

  33. Hawk Says:

@ Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun.

I was not happy with the selection of Lovie either, but I am a Buccaneer fan. I hope each and every Buccaneer ‘wins’ every battle, whether on the field or in the office. I will support and cheer for Lovie as long as he is the coach, but I will also point out his shortcomings, just as I would a players’.
As for your defense of Lovie, let us see how it looks in the light of day.
    # 1. You indicate that ‘now’ Lovie has a bonafide OC. He had one last year. Granted, he was temporarily lost due to illness, but it was LOVIE who refused to let him return even when a Pop Warner assistant coach could see that Arroyo was in WAY over his head.
    # 2. The defense is going into year 2 of a new scheme. And? ANY team going into their second year of a new scheme (offense OR defense) should certainly look better, regardless of the soundness of the scheme, or quality of the coach.
    # 3. “… a young thundercat rookie QB whose hell bent on being one of the great ones…”. So, we are going to give props to Lovie/Licht for picking the player that almost everyone on the planet had them picking?
I am counting on Winston being a star too, but we cannot ‘count’ it until he does it.
Others, in here, have talked about ‘defining moments’. Could it be that Lovies’ was going TWO PLAYS IN A ROW with twelve men on the field… after how many years as a coach? (IMO, no. There is rarely a ‘defining moment’ in someone’s life. There are mistakes, and lucky breaks.)
Talk about being a “big boy”. You need to be objective enough to see that Lovie has made enough mistakes (on and off the field), that questioning his ability to bring the Lombardi here is not without reason. And as long as he is the head coach, I will be cheering him on and also pointing out his mistakes.
    @ tmaxcon
“… make excuses and bad decisions all day.”?
    Really? ALL DAY?
Both of you guys need to take a step back and a deep breath.

  34. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Maybe Jameis figured it sounds dumb talking Super Bowl when so far you’ve been watching another QB taking the lion’s share of reps with the first team starters? OK that was primarily to p!ss off the anti-Glennon group, but I do agree that maybe Winston is learning to be humble with his words and (hopefully) let his play on the field do the smack talking.

  35. Steve Says:

When he signed with FSU, he said he was going to win a Championship. When he became the starter, he started the season by simply saying he wanted to perform to the best of his abilities. He then went out and won a Championship.

  36. Hawk Says:

    I said:
“Talk about being a “big boy”.”
I apologize for that remark. It was a barb that I should have buried instead of thrown.

  37. Fsuking Says:

Haters gonna hate but Jameis ain’t tryin to wait. It’s Super Bowl or bust in his mind. Jameis has that once in a lifetime competitive spirit and simply won’t wait for other players to get better, he will MAKE them better. We WILL be a good football team this year for that reason. I’d would bet anyone on this site we win at least 8 this year. I’ll be at training camp taking bets by the closest Vantage Point to Winston.

  38. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Then it will be “bust” because there is zero chance of him winning a Superbowl this year.

  39. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I feel your words Hawk and fsuking they soon gone see.
