“Temper Expectations”

Only the haters and knuckledraggers worshipping at the altar of Woody Hayes are tired of hearing about America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.

The next decade or so could prove to be stressful for these folks. Like it or not, when you draft a quarterback No. 1 overall, especially someone with the football resume of young Jameis, he becomes the face of the franchise.

Trust Joe, all the national reporters — and there were many — at One Buc Palace this past weekend were not there doing live hits on network TV about barbecue pitmaster Logan Mankins.

It was all Jameis — all the time. Not on board? Might want to find a closet for the next few seasons.

How the Bucs are able to ease Winston into life in the NFL may very well dictate the success of the franchise.

Herm Edwards, former Bucs defensive assistant and close friend and confidante of Lovie Smith, would lasso Jameis before Winston even took the practice field.

“Temper expectations,” Edwards said he would advise Jameis. In short, Edwards said Jameis is like a racehorse chomping at the bit for the gate to fly open. However, Edwards said, Jameis is no longer playing college teams. He can’t will victories in the NFL like he did college.

“He can’t will victories in the NFL like he did college.”

I think he can and I think he will.

  2. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Herm Edwards would be called a racist-hater if he dared post that here

  3. WS99 Says:

If you think you can you are right and if you think you can’t you are right. The only people who can stop jameis are his teammates and their loser mentalities. Just jump on board and BELIEVE in Jameis Chist our QB and savior.

Herm’s been hanging around jLarry David……

Winston lovers don’t need to Curb Your Enthusiasm but they do need to think about some realistic expectations and simply construct a somewhat smaller pedestal for Jameis this first year, you can add to it as he gains experience and the Bucs get more talent around him……

I don’t know where else to make this comment, so this seems as good a place as any

But with Peter King’s report that Licht has been locked into Winston for more than a year, can we end the “Chris Landry is an insider” charade? The guy was ADAMANT up to the last minute that the Bucs minds weren’t made up and hinting that they were leaning towards Mariota. The guy straight up either made spit up or lied…it’s one or the other.

Let’s also take a minute to laugh at those who said that the Bucs were leaning towards Mariota because they interviewed Blake Sims at the combine.

No F that. Every single offseason I get super hype about our draft and FA players. We were so close to winning so many games last year, I will absolutely not temper anything and neither should Jameis. We actually have a real QB leading the team. We have 2 very good receivers and good competition behind them. We have decent RBs. And our D played well down the stretch, we upgraded our nickle and MLB.
This is our time. We are the new patriots minus the cheating.
    10+ wins this year
10+ wins every year for the next 10+ years
We deserve this as loyal fans. NOW IS OUR TIME

  7. the real Bucobruce Says:

Temper this …….12 and 4 Super Bowl Jameis Winston MVP

  8. Eric Says:

My only expectation is to see the team rally around him and the “it” factor is present.

I fully expect struggles along the way.

  9. Mariota Joe Says:

Please stop the “America’s quarterback” nonsense JBF…it’s really dumb. Besides, take a poll of “America” and you’ll find a serious lack of love for Infamous.

  10. WS99 Says:

After watching footage of AMERICA’s QB in his first collegiant game where he beat Pitt 41-13 and went 25/27 for 356 yards and 4 TDs. All while throwing NFL probowl DTs off him like he was swatting away flies. I fully expect Mr. krabbs to be a full and complete bada$$ the second he hits the field because when we do it then, we do it BIG!!!!

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

Wow! No pressure, eh?! Don’t forget that Jameis is a rookie and playing on a team that went 2-14. It’s OK to be optimistic but lets be real. It is a TEAM game after all!

  12. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

4 wins, 19 TD’s, 9 INT’s, 2600 yards…if Winston can’t do better than those numbers in 16 games, with a “real OC and HC” and with VJax and Evans to throw to than I would think there will be some explaining to do to the fans

  13. DamnImFameis Says:

@Mariota Joe – how many times are you going to post that?

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    ToesOnTheLine!…those numbers?

    No problemo.

He was only trying to agree with the Big Dawg. If you remember, he said when he went to the combine, his concern was whether or not Winston was coachable. Huh? I’m not even a scout but my research told me that every coach he ever had loved him both baseball and football all the way back to pee wee league. Landry came back and raved about Mariota’s white board IQ, but would not get into WInston’s IQ. His reasoning was the rooms he sat in, the teams were only interested in Winston’s off the field issues and Winston seemed uncomfortable discussing it etc. Yet combine reports stated Winston’s IQ and interviews was off the charts impressive. Landry made up a lot stuff because he had an agenda which made him irrelevant and transparent.

  16. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Tiny Tim, I heard Landry make crap up about Winston for the last 3 months.

    A couple of examples:

Landry said that Jimbo told Jameis he wasn’t welcome back at FSU and that’s why he went pro. Right….because Jimbo would rather see Sean Maguire running his offense than Heisman Trophy winner, Jameis Winston.

Then, after the draft, Landry goes on a 10 minute rant about how no one is going to cover up for Jameis anymore like FSU did with the crab legs. Seriously, Landry said that the crab leg incident, with video available almost immediately after it happened, Jameis being immediately suspended from the baseball team, after he received the citation and paid back the cost of the crab…..Landry had the FREAKING STONES to say that FSU covered it up.

The guy is so full of BS I’m surprised Biff hasn’t driven a car into him yet following a failed pursuit of Marty McFly

  17. bucs4lyfe Says:

wow….no one said that about Andrew luck and some of these other day one starters. I tend to agree but I also think you cant say what he cant do until he actually gets out there and plays a few games but I get it, the bucs are the bubble gum stuck on the bottom of your shoe to national media so what do you expect

  18. Cannon Says:

If the o-line can keep Winston upright and open a few holes for our running backs, we should have a winning season.

    Plain and simple.

  19. WS99 Says:

    Ye of such little faith.

  20. tickrdr Says:

    @Toes on the Line:
Remember, those numbers were for only 13 games, not a full season.
After 18 games and a quarter, 29 TDs and 15 INTs. ~4000 yds total.

    @Buc1987:
Others have offered that he’ll have 30 TDs and 20 Ints. How about those predictions?

    @JBF:
    Johnny Football
    “Pineapple” McCown
    Jameis the “Savior” Winston
    Is there a trend here?

  21. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Buc1987

Hope you’re right or I’ll be as big a champion for drafting Hackenberg next year as you were for drafting Winston 🙂

  22. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ tickrdr

I’m with ya’ man…I was just saying if a #1 pick, “franchise savior”, with a better OC and more weapons can’t do better in 16 games than a 3rd round pick that for whatever reason some here think is garbage then I’d say we might start whispering that dreaded “B” word…as in bust.

  23. pick6 Says:

fair in 2015: more success on a drive to drive basis. major improvements in time of possession for the offense. more points, which if paired with the defense’s projected improvement, should mean winning games that we lost in the 4th Quarter last year….6 to 8 wins
