America won’t see its quarterback this summer on HBO

Damn, damn, damn, Joe would have loved to see the Bucs and Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, on HBO’s Hard Knocks this summer.

No, Joe’s not in the skirt-wearing crowd that believes somehow a Tampa Bay appearance would have been bad for Jameis, or that the Bucs need to shield him.

That’s just silly. In fact, more awareness for Jameis that he’s under a constant microscope likely would have been a positive thing. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was a Hard Knocks star with the Falcons last year — it sure didn’t hurt the Atlanta offense — and Joe suspects Koetter’s familiarity would have made things seamless for the Bucs offense.

Oh, well. Per ESPNCleveland.com, HBO and NFL Films, the show’s producer, will decide between the Texans, Bills and Redskins.

NFL Films, the report said, wants no part of teams that aren’t interested. The Bucs qualify to be featured (no new head coach, no playoff appearance in two years, etc.), but Lovie Smith and the regime aren’t jazzed to open their doors to cameras throughout training camp.

Maybe next year — though Joe sincerely hopes the Bucs aren’t disqualified because they have a new head coach.

So you hope Lovie gets replaced? When did this happen?

  2. Captain Doom Says:

aw shucks, I was looking forward to seeing Jameis angry pirate Winston get beat by Mike THE CANNON Glennon on the tube!

  3. Captain Doom Says:

    lovie’s not going anywhere.

you know how hard it is to actually fire a person like lovie?

  4. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Lovie bought himself some time with a rookie QB. I think the Bucs do better than expected this year and Lovie is Bucs HC for some time to come.

“Maybe next year — though Joe sincerely hopes the Bucs don’t qualify because they have a new head coach.” – Joe

Wait. That came off sounding like you hope we have a new head coach next year.

Does that mean you want the team to fail this year?

  6. cmurda Says:

I’m going to go out on a limb and say Joe worded that wrong. He is saying hopefully it happens next year and hopefully the Bucs don’t have a new Head Coach which therefore would disqualify them. Am I right Joe?

  7. TheShaz Says:

Relax Joe – if all goes well – this time next year you can rewatch all of Winston’s games over and over and over to get your fix.

You never know there might even be more than 16 games to review (not counting Pre season)…..it could happen.

Jameis is under enough microscopes as it is. Adding a HBO crew in his rookie training camp seems like a distraction because you know they will want Jameis to interact constantly.

I’m not saying he couldn’t perform well with the added scrutiny. But me personally, I can live without the NFL’s version of a lame Reality TV Show…..I hate Un-Reality TV with a passion.

  8. cmurda Says:

It’s also important to note that teams aren’t disqualified from being on the show if they have a new Head Coach. They can opt out however if they have a new Head Coach. Case in point: Bills

  9. tiny tim Says:

I’m glad the bucs higher ups have avoided hard knocks for all these years. There is no need to open your facility for all to see. I say way to go bucs. You don’t need to manufacture interest in your team. You do what the late great al davis said and just win baby and that will create all the interest you will ever need. Way to go bucs. You continue to get this right.

  10. drdneast Says:

Glad to see that didn’t happen. Players need to concentrate on the job at hand, not hamming it up for cameras which is the natural propensity of most people.
All reality shows are a bad joke anyway and bore me to tears.
Much like Joe insisting on calling Winston, “America’s QB.”

  11. R.O. Says:

It’s not a New Head Coach its 1st time head coach. Hence why the Bills are on the list….

  12. Hector Says:

@ Captain Doom Says: you know how hard it is to actually fire a person like lovie?

No, please explain in more detail what you mean!

  13. lurker Says:

america’s qb = tom brady! even hard knocks thinks so.

sorry famous jameis, the joes are trying to be cute. please forgive them for they know not what they do.

  14. BUC IT Says:

Joe this is about one of the stupidest comments I’ve heard from you. We took a major risk on Jameis and you want to put him on hard knocks as a rookie. We never need to be on hard knocks and Jameis does not need anymore attention or hype…..ever. Come on Joe…..sometimes the things you say really make me wonder.

  15. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Thank the Gods no soft knock cameras needed.

  16. White Tiger Says:

I for one am GLAD we won’t be having the drama of cameras in our midst, Jayboo will have enough problems staying focused, he doesn’t need the additional distraction of playing to the light of a behind the scenes camera.

…to be honest, this has never even once seemed “cool” to me…most of those who’ve had these folks in, have lived to regret it.

Can’t imagine why someone wants to see how the sausage is made…just enjoy the product on the field and let the business of football take care of itself.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Who wants to see the freaking Bills? I guess Ryan makes them interesting?

The Texans? Now I would like to see the Washington foreskins because Snyder is perhaps the worst owner in professional sports. Everybody loves a good car crash.

While we are all jacked about Fameis, despite what Joe says I don’t believe the rest of the country cares that much about him one way or another. We have become a boring franchise in the 13th market. Lovie is as charismatic as a corpse…nice guy but not entertaining at all. Aside from we Buc fans who would want to see us on Hard Knocks?

  18. tval Says:

Jameis would be amazing on there and everyone would watch..im not worried about him being distracted, its everyone else. I say pass on hbo, especially after hunting ground b.s.

  19. buccfan305 Says:

Yeah we missed “America’s Game ” too. They are showing every game from 1966 until pressent date and the only F#cking game they missed is my 2002 Bucs….WTF!!!!!!!

  20. buccfan305 Says:

They skipped over the Bucs to show the cheating ass Gatriots all in a row. Unless my uverse guide is broke the NFL got some splan’n to do.

  21. Pick6 Says:

I hope we are off the “can be forced to do it” list due to making the playoffs

  22. Pick6 Says:

Bills had a busy offseason. Bet they’d make for an entertaining series. Redskins have the RG3 factor and I’m personally curious whether his coaches actually respect him or not. Houston…meh. Watt & Arian foster have some star power, and Clowney’s comeback may be a neat storyline, but who else plays for the Texans again?

  23. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Some of you seem to have no reading comprehension. Reread Joe’s last sentence again. I am amazed that some of you couldn’t piece together Joe is saying he hopes we don’t have a new head coach next year (I am sure he warns some stability). SMH at you guys!
