Shutup, Michael Irvin!

April 28th, 2015

IrvinThe guy arrested while literally covered in cocaine and strippers, a guy who spent a chunk of his career disrespecting the NFL, has a problem with Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston staying home with loved ones for the NFL Draft.

Joe just doesn’t get it.

Of course, Joe’s talking about Hall of Famer Michael Irvin’s rant to USA Today. Here’s an excerpt:

“I understand you want to be with your family, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, but you’re a quarterback. Nobody profits more from this league than quarterbacks and I do have an issue with them not being there,” Irvin [said]. “This is a family. You’re coming into something that is much bigger than you. Don’t big-time it, and that’s what I feel is being done.”

The draft is nothing more than a made-for-TV event. It’s a TV ratings and cash grab for a wonderfully money-hungry league. That’s fantastic, but don’t expect players to volunteer for that kind of pressure, spotlight and additional scrutiny.

For what?

Irvin is so wrong claiming Winston and Mariota are “big-timing” the NFL. It’s the NFL that is big-timing hundreds of potential draft picks.

Why does the NFL only invite 30 or so players to the draft. Why not, say, 200? It’s one big NFL family now, right Michael Irvin?

It’s also a team game. So why not let nearly all the future NFLers have their five minutes of fame. The NFL could pick arena venues to accommodate those players, and nearly all the fans that want to attend, instead of excluding so many people.

It was ok to blast Winston for doing it but now that Mariota is staying home along with others…it’s no big deal

    /sarcasm

  2. Gator N Bucs Says:

There is NO WAY I could possibly agree more. F the NFL and their TV ratings. These kids should be Wherever the F they want to be.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Joe, Micheal Irving is the “media” and we all know that they want is what is best for them. I think he covers some of the draft, so he want what would make his job easier.

So lets review what we have learned. The “Media” no longer covers sports events and stories. They just sensationalize their opinions!!!

  4. Bill Says:

LOL, how perspectives can get skewed. The NFL is a family, which is why you should ignore your family. Good lord.

I would never attack any player for spending draft day with their family/support group. You gotta be “short bus special” to do so.

  5. DWE Says:

Irvin is an idiot and his opinion means zero

  6. tmaxcon Says:

Man it’s a shame that twitter, youtube and various other instant social media platforms were not around in the hey day of the Cowboys. those cocaine and hooker parties were legendary… Do the cowboys win 3 super bowls if half the team is suspended at various times because of hookers and blow pictures everywhere. We really missed out on that entertainment. Love Irvin but he is dead wrong on this.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

I strongly believe the decision for these two players to not be present at the the draft is NFL mandated.

  8. robert 9 Says:

it’s funny anyone who says something negative about JW gets mud slung all over him……while at the same time winston’s mud is defended to all edges of rational thought.

  9. WalkdaPlank Says:

Well, it is going to suck not seeing Jameis walk up to the stage and hold up one of those horrible monstrosities known as the Bucs uniforms, but that’s his business. No big deal.

  10. pick6 Says:

@Bill – “The NFL is a family, which is why you should ignore your family. Good lord.”

    perfectly summarized!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How can you blame any potential top pick for staying away after what Manziel went through last year……the NFL & ESPN are getting exactly what they deserve……cameras on Manziel after every pick….emabarrassing!!!

  12. drdneast Says:

Who cares what an uneducated addict has to say. You might as well go down on Franklin St. and ask a crackhead what he thinks. Irving has been full of himself since going into HOF.

  13. Eric Says:

Irvin must have forgotten he got caught in a hotel room full of cocaine and strippers, for which he was put on four years of probation.

And he preaches from the mountain top about public relations?

    Please.

  14. WalkdaPlank Says:

Ahh, ol’ Johnny Rehab. Probably drank himself to sleep after that night. That was hilarious.

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  17. port richey george Says:

you are right joe . a hall of fame player with 5 super bowl rings has no right to criticize anyone. he works for NFL tv network. I suspect roger goodell told him to do it.

  18. port richey george Says:

off subject but I found this interesting:

former rock star mark Dominick on mike and mike espn this a.m. said shane ray will drop to 2nd or 3rd round on all teams draft boards.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

Very nice…. a little Rick James to start the day never hurt anyone

  20. Broy34WontArgueWithStupidity Says:

Joe relax we r two days away and Winston is already at charity events with Derrick Brooks alstott and lovie. The pick has BEEN in so just start pregaming like its game day

  21. Clodhopper Says:

Irving during Ray Rice fiasco. Along the lines of: “I could only watch that video once. That’s how horrific it was.”

I have time believing all those coke and hooker binges, he didn’t raise his hand a single time. Yeah it’s all speculative, but I call hypocrite.

  22. tval Says:

Its pathetic how many folks are milking these 2, particularly jameis, for everything theyre worth. I dont have a preference where either go, but i surely have no problem with any player staying home. Its what id have done too regardless of round or pick id been considered. Another we have nothing left to say day..:) looking like jameis is the pick 99.9%

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @tmaxcon

Yesiir-Neva hurt a Soul. Good day 2 you my brotha.

  24. Sick of the debate Says:

There are several “experts” in the media that i completely avoid. This dude is one of them. I wouldnt have even seen this Joe, had you not posted this garbage on your site.
Why do we worry so much about what people not affiliated with our team have to think? Do you really think these guys are doing the due diligence necessary to talk about Bucs football? They can make predictions and claims and still walk away clean because they have no skin in the game.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

Winston should rock that Rick James glitter bolt jacket when he runs out on ray Jay field Thursday night… I see bucs bringing back the hair band style intro for Jameis Thursday at stadium.

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Clodhopper

You sound like Charlie Murphy right now my brotha

    LMFAO

  28. Posey99 Says:

Its a once in a lifetime event. Bring your family and let them enjoy the experience and perks of it all. Makes no sense to me. You are being Honored and inducted into the National Football League. Its an Honor for all your hard work, why wouldn’t you show up? If you want to be with your family, you still can, in Chicago, enjoying your reward.

  29. DallasBuc Says:

I have never heard Michael Irvin utter an intelligent thought

  30. Celly Says:

    @Posey

I guess you’re just going to ignore the fact that the reason Jameis is deciding to stay home is because his sick grandma can’t travel?

  31. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Posey99,

First of all, they can’t bring all of their families. Besides a plane ticket from Hawaii is about $800 a pop and Mariota probably has close to 100 family members or more that will be with him. Second, Winston’s grandmother has diabetes and can’t travel.

  32. Clodhopper Says:

    LMAO LUV!!!

  33. robert 9 Says:

the guy is a moron……but he was a WR. their all premadonna’s.

i could care less if any player likes some blow or hookers or some weed, as long as it does not effect their play on the field and they maintain their image while playing.

i’ll take an honest guy who likes some blow and hookers over a thief and alleged rapist all day and twice on sundays

  34. Luther Says:

OMG!!! You mean Mary Jane wasn’t about a girl??? What the heck..what was I thinking?

  35. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Clodhopper

Lol, Good day 2 U Brotha

  36. Clintro Says:

I will check twitter at Draft time… no need to watch 3 days worth of coverage of most players I dont really care about. The players should stay home if they want to.

  37. SoonerinTampa Says:

Waaaaa….waaaa…waaaa…Irvin is SPOT ON! You want the big check, you want all the notoriety, and you want people to fall at your feet…guess what? It comes at a price.

Jeebus people…you better get some thicker skin cuz Jaboo is going to face a great deal of criticism when he struggles on Sundays. Are you going to stamp your feet and hold your breath?

I will wait for Big Brothers moderation “approval”

  38. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Personally, my first instinct was to dislike Winston’s decision to skip the draft. It was his post Pro Day interview that changed my mind.

He seemed sincere about his grandmother and maybe it’s because I have one who is 96 years old and unable to travel, but I felt it.

If anything, given the pressure to attend, he scores points with me for NOT attending.

  39. MadMax Says:

Irving is doing what he’s always done….Its all about “him”….”he” has a problem with it…..

And the rest of the world DOESNT rotate around “Irving’s wolrd”…..silly manboy.

  40. OAR Says:

Ahh yes the Dallass Cowboys South America’s Team!
I have heard they call Dallas Drug Rings a huddle.

  41. Big Irish Says:

Why can’t the NFL Network interview him on his lawn after he’s picked #1 by the Bucs? Surrounded by family, hugging his grandma? A good look for him & the NFL.

  42. The Real Drew Says:

Oh no, somebody has a different opinion and you want him to shutup. I don’t agree with Irvin, but I’m not going to assassinate his character by talking about his past.

  43. bucswarrior1977 Says:

Robert9 you just gotta throw a jab at Winston on every comment u make don’t you. Not necessary dude. Damn.
