Shedding Light On QBs

Bucs quarterbacks last season, overall, stunk with screen passes.

Bucs quarterbacks last season stunk with screen passes.

It was a complete and total mystery how Mike Glennon, who got half the Bucs’ wins last year with an impressive victory over the playoff-bound Steelers in Pittsburgh, was benched and never again given a chance to start despite the team circling the drain.

There was no question Glennon was a better choice that turnover-prone Josh McCown. Or was he?

Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus documented every screen pass thrown in the NFL last year. Bluntly put, the Bucs stunk with screen passes. However, it seemed McCown was much better throwing screens to running backs than Glennon; though neither lit the world on fire.

Could it be that Lovie was right, that McCown really was a better all-around quarterback?

In the long run, it didn’t matter. The Bucs won the Chase for Jameis.

For some reason for the 35 years I’ve been watching Buc’s games, we’ve never been good with the screen game..

  2. MadMax Says:

After going 2/3rds through the season, knowing you have no chance at a playoff, you may as well stick with the program in order to get a high draft pick. And we got lucky and landed the 1st overall.

MG8 has his spot as a solid backup to Jameis…..he probably will even start the first 3-5 games while Jameis is broken in.

  3. Dick2111 Says:

Poor play design, even worse blocking, average (at best) RB play, QBs running for their lives … hmmm, what could possibly go wrong?

Personally I don’t think that we’ve seen the real Mike Glennon yet. Given a real OC, better blocking and improved RB/WR play, my hunch is that Mike’s play will be much improved also.

He may not be a ‘franchise QB’ but if Shaun King could lead a decent Bucs team to the playoffs, Mike Glennon surely can.

  4. RayRay1 Says:

No mystery Joes. Stubborn is as stubborn does. Lovie had his hand picked guy and he wasn’t turning back. To many square pegs in round holes last year. I fear for the same year after year.

  5. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

    Haha.

  6. BillT Says:

Better based on screens? That is silly. McCown is an old man and the Bucs were in last place with NO REALISTICl shot at the playoffs. Put in Glennon to gain at experience at the very least. Unless Lovie wanted the #1 pick of course. Lol

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

See, the Mike Glennon mob is still around.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Don’t know what the evaluation entailed….was it accuracy?….was it completions?….was it YAC?

I can tell you this….almost every play we ran was so predictable my wife could tell me what was going to happen….and I rarely disagreed with her.

Many of our screen passes were out of desperation…not designed.

  9. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“Mike Glennon, who got half the Bucs’ wins last year…” – Joe

Wow. I know that is technically true, but really? lol. 1 of 2 wins is supposed to endear us to the man? lol

As I recall, Joe announced he was not only a member of the Mike Glennon Mob, but a self proclaimed general.

He was also the loudest voice suggesting we draft Johnny Football (guess that name no long applies).

Now he is the loudest voice suggesting Winston.

Hey, I hope Joe is as good as a clock at least, because a clock is right twice a day…always. Maybe it is Joe’s turn to be right?

To be honest, I’m hoping he is, since we’re picking Winston regardless. Unless we don’t.

  10. Clodhopper Says:

It was those stupid uniforms. They knew they looked dumb and it affected their psyche. This year they, and we, will be desensitized to the madness. Good thing Winston could make a shirt of turds look good, and his psyche is unbreakable!

  11. bucs4lyfe Says:

ok well no we only have one quarterback who is bad at throwing screens…..like how many years does that take to perfect lol give me Winston or mariota please!!! Bryce petty I don’t care anybody just draft a quarterback, people say the line is bad, our quarterback position was equally bad

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    Jameis is the Answer!

see how delusional tampa fans can be when it comes to football. Given a real OC, better blocking and improved RB/WR play. you cant prove that will make him better, dude sucks and your just guessing. im more about the LeBron theory….in cleveland they were going to the finals he left and they could barely get 25 wins even with first picks in the draft like kyrie. comes back look they are right back in the playoffs. with a rookie coach who doesn’t really know the nba game….

if you have an elite quarterback what they have will do fine just ask Andrew luck. if you don’t have that guy then yes you need an elite supporting cast……

your translation glennon is not a franchise quarterback

  14. Florida Hillbilly Says:

    #5

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t know who the answer is, I just want us to draft him.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Tim Tebow signed by Eagles. Don’t expect them to mortgage their future for Mariota now.

  17. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Chip Kelly arrogant but not stupid. He knows marita better than anyone in the NFL if he was what all the hype say he is(which many who have come from a similar style of play haven’t been)Maybe he would be willing to make moves up in this draft. All picks necessary wouldn’t have to come from one draft. Just don’t see it happening, and don’t believe it was ever even a possibility.

  18. Espo Says:

We haven’t thrown a decent screen since Dilfer to Dunn against the Dolphins.

  19. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol atleast i know no sports analyst or website will go out on a limb and say tim tebow gives the eagles leverage to move up for mariota. to hear people call in radio shows talking about trading up for mariota…wont throw out any insults today ill just say everyone in this town would have killed the bucs for trading for sam Bradford and now the eagles have him and tebow lol the quarterback situation is still better than ours for about 10 more days

  20. Tom Says:

It seems Glennon has a beautiful spiral but can’t put touch on the ball as required by a screen pass

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Dirk Koetter is big on screen passes. We should see plenty this year – regardless of who is playing QB.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I hope this is Tebow’s final fling as a QB. He simply is NOT an NFL QB even in Philadelphia. He’s coming in as camp fodder and a Hail Mary for Chip.

Now if Timmy could just get his head on straight and accept that he is not a QB and he is NOT going to be the straw that stirs the drink, I believe he could become a very important ingredient in somebody’s drink as an Hback.

Tim Tebow signed by Eagles. Don’t expect them to mortgage their future for Mariota now.

See, i’m kinda of the opposite belief.

I feel that Chip knows he’ll need another QB after he winds up trading away one of the ones he currently has that has some value (Bradford/Sanchez).

  24. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Gotta give you props for consistency Bucs4lyfe…you never waiver on your delusional belief that every out of work QB is an upgrade to Buccaneers starting 2016 QB Mike Glennon. I will not be surprised in the least when the Bucs pass on Winston, pass on Mariota, draft either Hundley, Petty, or another day 2/3 QB and unleash the QB of the present Mike Glennon…I will enjoy listening to your rants every week.

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

If we can trade Glennon for any draft picks, we do it- then sign a vet to help Jameis.
If we can’t find a sucker trade partner- let Glennon start first 3 games. We are gonna have 2-3 rookie starters. Gonna be blocking issues, til they find a rhythm.
Don’t wanna risk Jameis during the breaking in period of the O-line.

Last year- we drafted skill position.
This year- our QB and O-line
Next year- our DE and defense.

Finally, the new coach and management team actually have a decernable plan, instead on the clueless Chaos of the Retched Dom years.
Finally- if they draft our QB- there is hope

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    StPeteBucsFan Says
“I hope this is Tebow’s final fling as a QB. He simply is NOT an NFL QB even in Philadelphia.”

That’s the thing. In Philly, he doesn’t have to be a typical NFL QB. Of all the teams he might succeed in, Philly is the place. Chip Kelly’s offense is well suited for the kind of QB Tebow is.

It’s an opportunity for Tebow. It will be an uphill battle, but if he has been working on his game while out of football, he has a chance…although a small one.

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Capt.Tim

I’m not a big Glennon fan, but I would say he’s a better option than a 6th round pick, which is the best Jason Lost is able to get in a trade of any sort.

Mike Glennon is no full time starter, but he can become a suitable backup. Who knows? Maybe when he comes in as a backup, he’ll raise his own stock by the time Jason Lost is replaced.

  28. LargoBuc Says:

But dosent the outcome of s screen rely on perfect blocking? The quarterback cant control the blocling being poor. Now you could argue that they should’ve audibled once the defense gave them a certain look but a far a the actual screen, I dont see the fault of the quarterback.
Or was this just a stat dug up to support Winston being new quarterback?
Look at the Redskin game. We established our deep passing game and then our offense could choose anything, screen, run we had them.

  29. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine!

it’s year 3 and your still trying to say glennon should be the guy for the next 10 years. I don’t really think you believe that

if glennon is soooo good and such a promising player please tell me why if a team thinks they are getting an immediate starter why not trade for him? lol because it’s saying glennon is not worth a 3rd round pick this year or next year…..a third round pick you cant get that for a franchise quarterback? lol dude sucks and you are one of those fans that I guess is happy with mediocrity because it gives you something to complain or post about. no one disagrees with how good LVD is or GMC or Mike Evans, these are the type of players that can change the fortunes of a team glennon lol ok

  30. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Bucs4lyfe

Did you ever stop to think that maybe the reason Glennon isn’t being traded isn’t because he isn’t worth a third rounder to some other team but is instead worth more than that to the Bucs? I get that you loathe Glennon, but Lovie probably actually does see Glennon in the team’s long term plan whether that’s as a starter for this year’s team or a backup/mentor to someone. Don’t hate the guy for outperforming your boy Freeman in 2013.

  31. TNT D@N Says:

Eagles 1 &2 + Tebow, RB Murray, and OT Peters for Bucs 1, RB Martin, C/G EDS.

Kelly gets his guy Mariota, Martin a fresh start, Bucs get an impact RB, fix LTackle, and pick up DE and G in Draft, Timmy comes home to FLA.
Glennon and Tebow battle for starter. Pick up Petty in 3rd round.

    Bucs go:
    eagles 1 = DE
    bucs 2 = OL
    eagles 2 = WR/KR/PR
    …BPA

  32. BucFan20 Says:

You can have Andrew Luck just like they do. And then sit home for the Super Bowl WITH Andrew Luck just like they do. Quit talking about Luck. He has not won a Super Bowl. So HE is not the answer. It takes a complete team.

  33. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine!

thats great real genius stuff….glennon a 3rd rounder who cant seem to get into the starting lineup is all of a sudden in long term plans of a regime that didnt draft him and is about to draft a quarterback 1st overall…real genius stuff and i’d rather be called a glennon hater than stupid and delusional. i mean i dont get it, people want 1st round talent at every position except quarterback because we have glennon. servicable is that what your going for from the guy who has the ball the most? glennon can outperform anybody, any quarterback coming out of this draft can come in and provide instant competition

  34. Lion Says:

Joe, the only logical reason why McCown didn’t get benched I believe they didn’t want to permanently damage the psyche of Glennon to a unrepairable state. I have to believe Lovie knew Glennon was the quarterback, but with there being no offense coordinator it made no sense to start Glennon over the 10+ year vet.

Of course we all knew McCown was awful, but at least he’s been around the block a lot longer. Let’s be honest throwing Glennon (Sophomore)out to the wolves with no offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and hell a Swiss cheese line could have without a doubt ruined his confidence and his entire career for that matter.

It truly was about the worst possible scenario for a developing second year quarterback with signs of promise imaginable. We should be thankful that he didn’t see the field that much, because it most certainly would have stunted his development big time.

  35. Lion Says:

That being said, I still definitely think we absolutely have to pick Winston. It’s not everyday you are in a position to draft an elite quarterback. Winston is the only choice that makes sense here.
