Mike Mayock Rankles Shaun King

April 9th, 2015

shaun king 0409

Bucs fans erupted — with glee, or shock and anger — when NFL draft guru Mike Mayock, after much thought, demoted prospective Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston to his No. 2 quarterback behind Marcus Mariota yesterday.

Shaun King, one of but three Bucs quarterbacks to lead the team to an NFC championship game, could only shake his head on Twitter.

King started pumping out Twitter messages that called into question Mayock’s analysis of quarterbacks.

Joe thinks the world of Mayock and the nose-to-the-grindstone homework he does on college players. But if this is a pattern that King — and others — have pointed out, shouldn’t we rejoice over the Bucs’ expected drafting of Winston?

Of course shaun king would back the Thug Jameis

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Winston is the only choice any other pick or trade scenario is simply stupid…

  3. Brian D Says:

Oh look, it’s Mike Mayock, yet another guy who was undeterred by the fact that Mettenberger pled guilty to sexual assault…yet uses a gravely flawed rape allegation against Jameis to tear him down three weeks before the draft.

  4. MM-ARMY Says:

JBF SPIN-SPIN-SPIN-SPIN IT LIKE SPINNING PLATES….

Mayock, a person that JBF has previously praised for his NFL draft knowledge, is now not so bright….why? He disagreed with JBF on JW.

  5. you can't fix it Says:

JOE, ONLY THING YOU DO IS TALK ABOUT THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER , YOU CUT DOWN M/M AND BUILD UP WINTSON OR HAVE SOME ONE CUTE M/M DOWN FOR YOU AND BULD UP WINSTON, THEN YOU SITE WILL NOT LET ME WRITE ANYTHING BECAUSE IT SAID I TALK ABOUT THE SAME THING BEFORE..HICK,,, YOU DO IT ALL THE TIME ON HERE.

  6. BucBoy Says:

Due to the Jameis Mob, we are not allowed to talk about his off the field issues, but I still remember the Playoff game where Mariota played against Winston and blew out the Seminoles! The constant rant of the Mob that Winston is Pro ready because he came out of Jimbo Whiner’s program is not factual!

Christian Ponder & E.J. Emanuel are both total NFL failures just as Winston will be and they had no off the field issues. Mike Mayock’s opinion is valued in the NFL a lot more than Shaun Who??

The Buc’s are picking Mariota or they would have signed Jameis to a contract by now. Jameis knows this so he is not coming to the draft and sit in the green room to take his punishment like a man!

So..when the FSU Mob starts blah, blah, blah…remember Ponder and Emanuel!! Jamarcus Winston will not play for the Bucs!

  7. BirdDoggers Says:

It just shows how big of a crap shoot the draft is. The pre-draft rankings mean absolutely nothing and all the analysts can come up with wildly different opinions of a prospect after watching the same exact game film. There were several analysts that actually thought Ryan Leaf was a much better prospect than Peyton Manning. It happens every year.

  8. adamant Says:

BucBoy – It will be so funny when draft day comes and you eat your words. But, since we don’t know who you are, you will simply create another name and pretend you were on board the whole time.

  9. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Per: NFL Network

Which quarterback will have the brighter NFL future?

    32% Jameis Winston
    68% Marcus Mariota

Again. I’ve been saying that mayock is a joke lol. I use to be a fan until about three to four years ago. Then is where I realized that he was just trying to be different than everyone else

  11. bucs4lyfe Says:

mayock was kinda big time a few years ago during draft time but fell off….lol I guess this is why

  12. robert 9 Says:

yeah, the JW mob is pretty darn opinionated.

don’t dare mention any issues with JW lest you be chastized

The guy is trouble with a capital T.

  13. PocketPirates Says:

Winston is the better more accurate passer and he is the pick. He MUST be.

I don’t want RG3 redux quarterbacking this football team.

  14. iamkingsu Says:

He said Mark Barron floor(projection) was pro bowl, he had no idea who knile Davis was, big Leonard Johnson fan etc. I mean the list goes on

  15. BucBoy Says:

Well you are right…I am “adamant” that you people in the Jameis Mob are all wound up….if it is not Jameis you start calling people names and making disparaging comments.

If you are right, that just means the Buc’s made another mistake and this team and this city will wait another decade for a shot at a quality QB. You cannot watch the Oregon-FSU game and tell me Jameis is a better QB.

A franchise QB is a 10 year (or more) pick. Who cares is your boy can play game 1…Lovie proved last year in the Saints game he is not about winning. The idea is to pick a QB who the next HC can work with!

  16. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

Talking heads disagree with each other. Readers disagree with each other. None of this has any significant impact on the choices teams make when on the clock. Just get the Draft over with so that we can return to our woeful lives in peace (lol).

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ve become very, very tired of the QB debate……I’m fine with either….but what I do have to say is this:

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

“I just can’t take u serious if u had bridgewater ranked as your 5th qb last year…..”

I just can’t take you serious if you were one of two Buc quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship game when your defense gave up 11 or fewer points. 🙂

  19. admin Says:

    you can’t fix it:

If you can point out what the Bucs are doing right now that is more important than being on the cusp of the most important draft choice in decades, about to pick the leader of the team for hopefully the next 10-12 years or more, feel free to fill Joe it.

Hint: signing a defensive end the team let walk previously and who had a robust six sacks last year isn’t one of them.

Joe didn’t build this site from nothing into a large entity in six years by not having a clue to what he is doing. Traffic reinforces Joe’s beliefs.

  20. Drew Says:

What matters in the selection of a QB is what Koetter wants. Koetter will build an Offense around the QB selection.

  21. bucrightoff Says:

Of course had Mayock said Winston was the best prospect he’s ever seen, King probably never brings up that Mayock said the same thing about JaMarcus.

  22. WS99 Says:

Mike Mayock was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the tenth round of the 1981 NFL Draft, as the 265th overall pick. After being cut from the Steelers, Mayock was signed to his first pro contract with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts during the 1981 season. He played in just one game before being released. He returned to the NFL with the New York Giants for the 1982 and 1983 football seasons.

Now that is hilarious. Yes please tell me who we should pick mr NFL guru. Rotf

  23. Barry Says:

    I like King’s Rapist wit.

    #DP #HGH #PEDs #BrainDeadRetard

  24. Skyline Crew Says:

He has the same concerns that all Bucs fans (minus FSU fans) have about Winston. Nothing new here.

  25. JFF Says:

blah blah blah Mayock doesn’t even really do his own rankings. He watches the film yes but he bases his ranks more on what he hears from scouts & GMs, and generating hype. Those folks were down on Bridgewater last year, just like Joe the JFF fanboi. I wanted Teddy but hey at least we took my #2 player FFS.

Mariota’s stock is rising throughout the league so that’s why Mayock moved him up. That and it generates $$$$ for NFLN, ESPN, etc.

Besides to ask like it’s some travesty that Winston isn’t ranked #1 is ridiculous. Stop blinding your eyes to the INTs people, he throws a lot of interceptable passes!

  26. Skyline Crew Says:

Also, before you all get your panties in a wad. Mayock does say that he believes Bucs take Winston.

  27. Keepitreal Says:

Funny MM croud has been quiet last few weeks. Mayock stirs the pot an their all back I force. What a joke. Sorry guys nobody is basing their oppinion on Mayock whoi stated if MM is in right system he could be productive.. Boy that’s a ringing endorsement. If it wasn’t for off field issues this wouldn’t even be close! Enjoy nex three weeks cause the snap back to reality… Lol

  28. W Says:

    @BucBoy

“The Buc’s are picking Mariota or they would have signed Jameis to a contract by now.”

If they knew, like you supposedly do…then wouldn’t they have signed Mariota to a contract by now?

  29. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Keepitreal

That doesn’t makes sense at all. All QBs have to be in the right system. Why is it that all QBs that go to the Browns turn bad? Why is it that QBs that go to NE, Indy, Sea, or good teams turn out ok? Is it because it is coaching? The right system involves the coaches. Our coaches are awful. The Browns coaching is awful. If you don’t have the right coaches/system then a QB will fail. Pretty simple really.

  30. Skyline Crew Says:

Mayock is just voicing the same concern that everyone besides FSU has. Not sure why you are all crying.

  31. David Says:

Been Saying it the whole time, MARIOTA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, the hell with Shaun King.

  32. Keepitreal Says:

He ment a spread and you know it… Or your ignorant. I’d like to think the first.

  33. LargoBuc Says:

Look, the guy had Gabbert ahead of both Newton and Dalton. He also had Weeden ahead of Russell Wilson. So who cares? Both are talented and both have potential. One has ran a pro style before and one has superior athleticism. Get over it.

  34. Keepitreal Says:

Why are we talking about this? His oppinion is PR… and nobody in the know cares. Just MM croud

  35. charactermatters Says:

    ROTFLMAO
REALLY? Shaun King critical of another analysts rankings? How about we take a look at the history of his rankings and mock drafts?

  36. Skyline Crew Says:

So really you’re just assuming that is what he meant. That is fine. But sense nobody here takes Mayock’s word serious, I can’t take that serious.

  37. Skyline Crew Says:

I wouldn’t call King an analyst unless he works for the Food Network.

  38. Skyline Crew Says:

Also, Glennon is better than King. Stats don’t lie, right? Glennon’s 2 seasons are already better than Kings 6 years of playing.

  39. Joe Says:

Also, Glennon is better than King. Stats don’t lie, right? Glennon’s 2 seasons are already better than Kings 6 years of playing.

And King’s numbers were better than Doug Williams. Uh, oh.

  40. Jameis "The Train Wreck" Winston Says:

I am just gonna sit back, drink a few beers and watch this entertaining train wreck unfold.

  41. Hawaiian Buc Says:

The anti-Winston group (I refuse to call them Mariota guys because they don’t really care about Mariota, they just hate Winston) sure has awoken in the last 24 hours. Mayock has given you guys some hope, and you are clinging to it hard.

I’m not going to bash Mayock’s scouting. He is a million times more qualified than me. However, does anyone find it curious that we are in April and all of a sudden he is switching his QB’s? Was there a game played last week that I don’t know about? He’s had Winston at #1 for months now, why the sudden switch? You don’t think that maybe the NFL Network is trying to stir up some ratings? If not, look at how you are all reacting.

  42. drdneast Says:

Is King upset enough that he wants to protest by going on a hunger strike.

  43. Skyline Crew Says:

No, why do you find it weird? He has been thinking about it a lot. He just says what many feel and all the sudden his career is put into question. Maybe we should be asking why this is. Is it because Winston can do no wrong in the Winston Lover’s eye?

I don’t hate Winston and understand he will probably be the Bucs pick as Mayock even states. He just believes that Mariota is the better QB. Nothing wrong with that. I think Mariota is better as well and will have the better career.

    ___________

    What? How do you figure?

King played one full season with the Bucs and Doug played 3 full seasons. About the only thing King had better was completion percentage.

  45. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Skyline Crew,

No, nothing is wrong with thinking Mariota is better. Based on what he did in college, I can totally see that side of the coin. You may end up being right. I just find it odd that he thinks that way in April, when he felt differently in March. No games have been played that I know of. Jameis hasn’t gotten in any trouble, nor has he thrown any picks as of late. Although I really like and respect Mayock, you are fooling yourself if you believe he is in meetings with him. He probably has spoken with him a couple times max, but it’s not like he’s been asking him about the sexual assault non-charge.

  46. tmaxcon Says:

    Skyline

I’m no Shaun king fan that being said comparing a heartless 5-13 backup qb who couldn’t beat out McCown to a QB who led a team to the playoffs is absolutely insane. All the creative math and excuses in the world will not justify glennons losing record.

  47. Skyline Crew Says:

I’m not justifying Glennon’s losing record. I’m stating Shaun isn’t some great QB. He had one year where he played 16 games and happened to be on a great defensive team. Him and Glennon are one in the same.

  48. Sam Says:

so the reporters history of qb picks matters….but Jimbo fisher’s history of producing QBs who fail in the nfl doesnt?
First, it was JaMarcus Russell, then Christian Ponder and E.J. Manuel

But us “haters” are being unfair.

Look as a QB…..I dont care Im fine with both. As an athlete…MM is clearly better….JW probably is more ready……..likelihood to be suspended in the first 2 years….I think thats pretty obvious which one will be visiting the commish more often…..and that is simply based on the number of times the kid has been in trouble.

  49. Trubucfan22 Says:

It’s impossible to know how well a player will transition to the NFL. Most of the failure doesn’t come from on the field talent. It comes from devotion, work ethic, and pride. Most people don’t have what it takes to be an NFL player. Sure they are talented enough, but it takes more than talent to be a star in the NFL. The game film on Mariota is very impressive, but where he is ranked is merely a prediction of how all that production translates to the NFL level. It’s only an opinion.

  50. Trubucfan22 Says:

Just because mayock has a differing opinion doesn’t make him a hack or idiot. These are opinions. He’s entitled to his.

That’s the problem with today’s society. It’s has gone from a melting pot of different opinions and ideas. to a superiority complex where it’s “my way, or the high way”. People can’t have differing ideas, because someone is going to be called an idiot, for simply having a different opinion. When did we become so bull headed that we can’t see another’s points of view.

  51. Bucfan4life Says:

@BucBoy if you watched the FSU/Oregon game and couldn’t see that Winston did very well in it then you just don’t know how to judge a QB. He played very well but his defense and turnovers by the RB/WRs did them in. Watch some of the football shows and you may figure it out as all the experts agree with this. Looking only at the scoreboard or a single play where he had to make a play on 4th down that didn’t work out is not the way to judge a QB.

  52. rayjay1122 Says:

This is all just about as maddening as political campaign commercials. Each group of people smearing the other and their favorite candidates. I cant wait until the draft comes and goes and we can move past this nonsense. The off season is just too long!!! Go Bucs!!! Pick a QB please. I don’t really care which one but we need one for sure. I think it will be Winston but It is cool that we get the choice.

  53. bigherc73 Says:

Everyone is going to make there own personal opinion but the numbers don’t lie! WINSTON IS THE BEST THING IN THE DRAFT PERIOD!! So all the comments are welcome just let’s see how the season goes

  54. Informer Says:

Just a note. Any gator fan calling Winston a thug is FOS. Two words: Aaron Hernandez. And if you wanna talk about corrupt police, look no further than Gainesville. Whoever is interested, google “hernandez, pouncey twins, reggie nelson, shooting” and tell us who the thugs are and where the corrupt police reside. Oh yeah…..4-8.

  55. DRAFT #5 Says:

I like Mike Mayock’s analysis usually but I think this year he is letting his man crush on Marcus cloud his judgement. You can just look at the Pro Day interview and he was about to ask the guy out on a date he was as giddy as a school girl. But not just throw dirt on him I will provide some facts that show his bias.

I want to start by saying I think Marcus is a good guy and great college QB but I just don’t think his game will translate to the NFL game. To many instances of similar type QB that have failed. Don’t be fooled that he is different.

    1. He commented that Jamies had too many off field issues which concerned him. Yet he moved the Gregory kid from Nebraska up from the 4th best rusher to the 2nd best rusher after admitting to using drugs then further comments he could be the biggest bust in the draft. Then why do you move him up the board. Based on his concerns with Jamies he would move down. Curious at best.

    2. He comments that Jamies had too many interceptions last year (valid point) and his turnovers concern him. Yet when he talks about Marcus he ignores the fact that he had 24 or more fumbles plus 4 interceptions which is more turnovers than Jamies had his whole time at FSU. Mayock never brings his ball security up. For a running quarterback which he was that very concerning. Gruden made a huge point of it when he did his session with Marcus. Why is Mayock ignoring it?

    3. He is the same QB as RG3. He has to change his game to play in the NFL. He will never survive trying to run the spread. That usually spells disaster for a QB. Lets count the recent QB’s who have failed. Kap, Johnny Football, Alex Smith, Micheal Vick, RG3, Vince Young. Need I go on.

    4. The last four QB’s to graduate from the Oregon system have been great in college but have not been able translate to the NFL. Why will he be any different. Please don’t say look at his stats as they all had crazy stat lines.

I just don’t want this team to make a mistake like Washington did with RG3. But I fear it could happen. I don’t trust L & L to make the right decision. Let hope they draft Winston.

  56. Dave Says:

Mayock is fantastic. SO he can’t pick a QB…. newsflash, almost everyone can’t

  57. BucIt941 Says:

I used to very much respect Mayock analysts on college players and to a degree i still do, but never on the first 2 rounds of talent he talks about. As of the last 1/2 decade he has been more of a bandwagon fan than a true guru of prospect evaluations.

Really the only ones opinion I still have faith in is Daniel Jeremiah. The man (although tries to play into national media hoopla) knows his stuff and does his research. He has been the most accurate over the last few years. Sorry but Mayock has turned into Gruden and just always praises what everyone else praises.

  58. Brittney Spears Is Back & Buy Burt Reynolds’ Trans Am Says:

[…] • Now Shaun King is going after Mike Mayock […]

  59. Johnny Dejay Says:

The Jameis Winston Mafia is almost as annoying as Tebowmania, but I’m hoping for the 100% Juicy Juice kid anyway. On the other hand, if it was my choice and my job depended on it, I would select Mariota because I don’t trust Winston.
