Lavonte David Says Some Players Might Tell Jameis Winston “He May Have To Tone That Down”

April 28th, 2015

jameis 0401Stud Bucs linebacker Lavonte David stood before media today at One Buc Palace, and Joe had a Jameis Winston question for David.

Here’s the unedited exchange:

JoeBucsFan.com: There’s a lot been talked about Jameis Winston possibly being the draft pick on Thursday night. Do you think this team needs a personality like that, a presence like that?

Lavonte David: We got guys in this locker room with great character. I think once [Winston] comes, if we draft him, he comes in the locker room, I’m sure guys will pull him to the side. We got some veteran guys who can pull him to the side, you know, make him understand that, you know, there’s a role he has to play once he come in. And sometimes he may have to tone that down. Some guys may even say, ‘Just be yourself. That’s who you are so be yourself.’ I don’t think it’ll be a distraction or anything like that. So I’m sure, if he comes in, he’ll adapt to what we have going on in the locker room.

A couple of things: First, Joe hopes Winston doesn’t adapt to what the Bucs have going on in the locker room. Joe hopes it’s a combination of adapting and setting a new standard for a team that’s lost 70 of its last 100 games.

Second, David’s take illustrates that Winston likely would get some mixed messages from teammates. That’s going to be a challenge for the 21-year-old quarterback and his head coach to manage.

No worries there, we know MG8 will set him str8.

  2. Cover deuce Says:

If we’re to be relying on a 21 year old to set the tone in the locker room, we’re in more trouble than I thought.

  3. Arealbucsfan Says:

F that. Be urself Winston. Jus no hissy fits when u lose or throw an INT. I remember seeing Cam with a towel over his head. Dont want our QB doing that

  4. Buc1987 Says:

2 more days til Jameis Time!

  5. Ray Rice Says:

Exactly. Beast LVD is already stepping up as the real leader of the team and saying he will check #5 if he gets out of pocket. McCoy will probably cry to the media about Jameis like he did last year with MJ instead of telling him something.

  6. SoonerinTampa Says:

HAHAHAHA…all the fans drooling over the big, brash, and overzealous car salesman known as Jaboowins are going to poo poo a PROVEN LEADER on this Buccaneer team.

    PRICELESS!

  7. robert 9 Says:

jaboon aint coming no where near tampa

  8. BucFanForever Says:

The only advice that the locker room should give Winston is how to become the QB version of Gmc and LVD, but with a ton more wins. 13-35 for LVD and 27-53 for GMC ain’t so hot. The locker room should then turn their ears to Winston when he shows them how to win. How to not only run 2 yard dive plays in the second half.

  9. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

What’s this have to do with the offensive offensive line?

  10. robert 9 Says:

trade back. build the trenches, bring in a quality backup like moore and start the cannon. we will be in the playoffs and can trade a bag of chips and bail money to get JW next years

  11. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s no different than any setting. There is a time and a place for a young person to step in to a leadership role. You can’t walk in day one and expect people to follow you when they know very well just how little a rookie knows about life in the league. It’s really not saying anything to say that he’ll need to go along before he gets along. That’s the case everywhere. I can’t imagine that he would walk in and assume that he’s the leader.

  12. NCMike Says:

    BucsFanForever is all to funny

  13. CSlaughter Says:

JW was well liked by teammates at FSU. I think he’ll be fine.

  14. MTM Says:

Sounds like somebody already has a problem with the Jameis Winston attitude. You mean not everybody is on board with the incoming QB with a huge ego. No distractions at One Buc Place. The next train wreck is coming….

  15. actually knows football Says:

Robert9 is just really in denial still. It’s funny. Wintson is coming just accept it.

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

Pretty sure that he’ll probably be the only BMOC that’s ever come in to the pros after being the best thing ever at the school they just left. I doubt the players will know what to do with him because they’ve never dealt with anything like that before.

  17. Joe Says:

If we’re to be relying on a 21 year old to set the tone in the locker room, we’re in more trouble than I thought.

2-14 last year and losing 70 of last 100 games and not winning a playoff game in 13 years kinda tells Joe this team is in a lot of trouble.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just a touch of maturity humility & restraint won’t help….he can still be himself, however.

It could actually work the other way….Jameis to LVD….”You need to pump it up a bit”

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    touch of humility won’t hurt…..

  20. bucrightoff Says:

Jameis will be the Manziel of this year in that he will pretty much be the most targeted player in the league for defensive players. Expect tons of crab legs post-sack dances.

  21. The Real Malloy Says:

man you’ll hear crickets round here when Jameis is NOT the pick in 2 days…

    I cant wait!

  22. Mallory Says:

I’m undecided, is drafting Winston going to be a train wreck, clown show or goat rodeo?

  23. robert 9 Says:

2-14 was a product of bad coaching, bad playcalling, playing the wrong players for various reasons.

with decent clock management, a little variety on playcalling and playing glennon rather than tanking the season with mcclown we could have come in .500

not complaining if in fact we tanked the season. it that was actual effort on the coachin staff we’re in deep $hit!

  24. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Joe, sometimes I think your parse a players, or coach’s, words too much. Simple comment by LVD, didn’t need much explanation.

  25. chickster Says:

Bucs are doomed if we listen to morons like joe and picking this guy your listening to the wrong people marcus is the only pick to consider watch what happens marcus will be in the nfl long after the crab stink is gone l

man you’ll hear crickets round here when Jameis is NOT the pick in 2 days…

    I cant wait!”

Jameis is such a done deal, Vegas has already pulled the bet. The last available odds before they pulled it was:

2015 NFL DRAFT – Who will be the #1 Selection
    10:58p
    Jameis Winston
    -1500
    Marcus Mariota
    +750
    Any Other Player
    +900

So, by all means, you should go make some money since you know more than the oddmakers.

  27. WS99 Says:

Joe hopes Winston doesn’t adapt to what the Bucs have going on in the locker room

    ……………

    Esto aqui, si si.

  28. The Real Malloy Says:

wait, so you’re telling me its a done deal because vegas says so?

what you’re telling us all is that vegas odds makers know more than 31 other GM’s…..

    and your full of shit…

  29. SailorJerry Says:

I haven’t been this depressed by the Bucs since we picked the last #5 in the first round. No confidence in the front office. They will take Winston and the decline continues

trade back. build the trenches, bring in a quality backup like moore and start the cannon. we will be in the playoffs and can trade a bag of chips and bail money to get JW next years

So, trade a pick for Matt Moore?

Why trade a pick for a QB when we could just select one with our #1 pick?

  31. mjc Says:

No the Vegas odds makers don’t need to know what 31 GM’s are going to do, they just know Licht and Lovie are selecting Famous Jameis

It would be great if Famous was eating crab legs at home when his name is called.

    Priceless.

The draft will go to commercial after pick #1 and you would see a Red lobster commercial with Famous eating crab legs.

  32. chickster Says:

I just cant see the owners bringing in a guy even if there is a chance of him being a rapist if he was a run of the mill guy he probable be in prison

  33. mjc Says:

Why does it seem all the people who were begging the Bucs to draft Manziel last year are the ones against Jameis.

  34. Gator N Bucs Says:

If he comes to Tampa I will support him Fully! However I can never square my mouth right to call another grown man Jaboo.

  35. robert 9 Says:

    @chickster

he would NO DOUBT be in prison if he wasn’t JW.

white, black it doesn’t matter. he would have been arrested for the bb gun thing, the crab leg thing and would not have had the protection from the rape allefation. 98% of America would be in prison for the things he’s done.

  36. robert 9 Says:

jaboo is kind of fitting if you ask me.

    think about it!

  37. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Please, Robert, explain why it’s fitting.

  38. WalkdaPlank Says:

Well Lavonte David is clearly a hater, right Winsonites?

  39. Joe Says:

Maybe you missed this element of the story from David:

“Some guys may even say, ‘Just be yourself. That’s who you are so be yourself.’ I don’t think it’ll be a distraction or anything like that. So I’m sure, if he comes in, he’ll adapt to what we have going on in the locker room.

  40. BucTrooper Says:

Yeah well… these (cough) “vets” won 2 games doing it their way. Their criticism of a guy who lost one game in 2 years should carry about as much weight as an Obama apology in front of a golf course.

  41. WalkdaPlank Says:

I was just kidding Joe. 🙂

I like giving the hardcore Winstonites a hard time. Can’t wait for Thursday.

  42. HawaiianBuc Says:

I swear if there were a story where Jameis Winston saved 100 kids from a burning building, there would be people on here claiming that he set the place on fire. I do not get the hate that people can have towards a guy they have never met. I don’t think I hate anyone as much as many of you hate Winston.

  43. WalkdaPlank Says:

Of course, if someone here said had that Jameis needed to “tone it down” and might have to be “pulled aside” they would have circled the wagons, don’t you agree?

I personally want Jameis to keep his attitude, it will bode well for pissing off the other team’s fans.

  44. Morgan Says:

Asking David if Winston will be a distraction is a distraction.

  45. robert 9 Says:

    @ hawaiian

same could be said for some of the MG8 haters.

or the hatred spewed toward those that don’t want JW.

    goes both ways.

  46. chickster Says:

theirs to much garbage that comes with this guy I don’t want to here about his court cases of rape this would be a all time low for the organization ask the general manager if he thinks his accuser is a liar ask lovie smith this question if he thinks this girl is a liar . this guy has no accountability for any of his actions. hey joe invite your boy home to baby sit and then you can tell us about it so joe say it aint so

  47. Mariota Joe Says:

chickster, it will only accelerate if the Bucs draft this “Got a little too handsy” Infamous. GLAZERS PLEASE UNITE BUC FANS AND DRAFT MARIOTA!!

  53. Brandon Says:

  54. charactermatters Says:

    Love and WD,
You do understand how Vegas works, right? The point spread and such has nothing to do with who they think is actually going to win, etc. It’s all about getting equal money on each side. Vegas pulling the bet in no way means that anything is a done deal.

  55. The Real Drew Says:

I love how the NFL Network is now trying to stir something up out of this by portraying Lavonte’s words out of context, that he’s pulling an “alpha male” position.

  56. Bird Says:

Hey joe. Why don’t you blast Lavonte like u did bill polian for making tohe same comment. Classic joe and his man crush. What to do? Lavonte is the man and I respect his take on the situation. Lavonte is favorite player by far. Only got his jersey now. Vjax and Evans close seconds.

  57. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I wonder how that locker room would respond if Jameis tells them, “I’m the golden child, back the eff off.”

Or how they will respond when he starts blaming them for his own mistakes.

  58. Red86 Says:

Personally I think Winston should stay the same or ramp it up when leading the team. This team has no players leaders when things got tough during the games we lost. Though I seen more fire out of Mike Evans than anyone on the bench when we lost. I think Evan and Winston are going to get along great. Everyone else was looking like they were in a funeral in a winnable game.

Those negative thought they had was contagious. If we want a winning team, then our leader need to step up. Yes you going to rub people the wrong way some time. Like Ike Taylor said on ESPN first take this morning, not everyone got along but we still won.

Think what you want. The obstinate people who refuse to accept the obvious will be the most entertaining to watch on here on Thursday night. If Licht came out and said “We are signing Winston”, you and a few others would simply call it a bluff. Which is fine, just don’t act surprised on Thursday.

  60. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

You have to be joking Robert9. Nobody hates Glennon, they just state the obvious. He’s not very good and will be a career back up. It’s not the same at all.

There are haters on this site that seem like they are going to be on suicide watch for months. This depression will set in at approximately 8:15 Thursday night. I can’t wait!

  61. Underdog Says:

Winston will find it quite different being in a lockerroom full of grown men with families than being in there with a bunch of 19 year olds. His antics won’t fly when you mess with a grown man’s livelihood. I think the veterens will give him his guidelines quickly and hold him to accountability. We’ll see if he is mature enough to handle that and put half of his ego in his pocket

  62. Capt.Tim Says:

You guys sure seem to trust and believe woman.
I was in a popular band, where we had’ me hanging off us.
The certainly didn’t fit the angelic embodiment of honesty some of to seem to bestow on them.

My experience was that they were manipulative lil schemers. Dishonest and cheaters to the core. They always blame men for cheating. It’s a lie. I saw ten times more women cheating than men.
You want a good opinion of women? Never ask a man who has been around lots of them.

They have caught this girl lying, changing her story at least 4 times.
Do I think she’s a liar, trying to grab the brass ring? You bet I do.

I guess all of you guys taking her word as gospel have never been married?
You damn sure haven’t been thru divorce proceedings

  63. Pickgrin Says:

Watch how quickly Jameis earns the respect of the entire team once OTAs and then training camp start. He’s got an infectious positive enthusiasm about him – and he’s got mad skills throwing the ball.

Winston is going to earn his offensive leadership role with his play – and shut up all the haters pretty quick in the process. Even the worst of them are gonna catch them selves saying stuff like – “Damn, that was a hell of a throw” at some point in the next few months….

  64. grafikdetail Says:

  65. gotbbucs Says:

Most kids coming from highschool to college athletics either check their egos at the door until it’s their time to shine or the upperclassmen help them understand the pecking order. Im sure its no different in the pro’s and anybody acting like this is a big deal is clueless.

This would happen for Winston, or the 2nd coming of Christ. Get ahold of yourselves some of you. There isn’t an evil undertone in every story.

  66. SOOFIERCE Says:

I wonder if JW will get the best out of our O-line patch work. Will he bark at them? Get their respect?? Get into a sideline scuffle??? Or maybe the O-line mysteriously gels all of a sudden when Ann Alpha male tells them what to do?

The rest of you think that this kids success against inferior talent in the ACC will translate into the success HE thinks he will have.

    Neither of you are realistic.

Against the competition…his line is worse than the one at FSU.

What we know is, his performance falls-off in equal proportion to his lines ability to protect him.

(ie, buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride).

  71. tval Says:

If acc defenses are so awful why did one of the worst ones shut down ohio st in the shoe? Look at the nfl pipeline article, a couple yrs back, it added up starters, pro bowlers, etc. not just drafted from specific conf. And who was ahead of sec the last 15 yrs in this research? The acc. So you’re wrong. Next! Lol!! Nevermind the fact jameis played #1 collection lf defenses last season.. sure its relative, but gt, nd, and hokies along with clemson destroying oklahoma proves how much of a hater you obviously are.

  72. Joe Says:

How did Matty Ice (20 picks senior year in the ACC) turn out?

  73. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Capt.Tim

If you go to the meat market and the meat is bad, it isn’t the fault of the meat. It’s the fault of the market where you shop.

You experienced bad women because of the place you found them and the company you kept.

There are better market places out there.

My wife was a 26 year old virgin when we married, and a more dedicated, honest wife I could not have hoped for.

Well, then this team is most definitely in worse shape than you thought. Yes, we will be relying on a 21 year old to set the tone in the locker room. We will also be relying on him to set the tone on the field. Both of which he is very capable of. When you are at a 30% winning clip over the past 100 games, something needs to change. A little fire in the belly, a little swagger, and a lot of heart. JW brings it. The haters will always be there but they will have to wallow in their self misery when JW starts bringing this team up with his leadership and skills. Can’t wait for it to be confirmed tomorrow night.
