Chris “Mad Dog” Russo

Behold, Joe’s notebook is now empty from interviews with national NFL media folks in recent weeks. This time, it’s one of Joe’s favorites, the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo of SiriusXM fame. Russo, never afraid to share an opinion, is not riding on the Lovie Smith bandwagon but thinks the Bucs coach has a safe job, despite what may happen this season, despite what happened last year.

JoeBucsFan: Joe knows that you were lukewarm when the Bucs hired Lovie Smith and you thought it was nothing but a safe hire. And everything you thought would happen, happened, maybe worse than you originally thought.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: I am not a big Lovie fan. Lovie provides stability. It will be interesting to see what he does with this No. 1 pick. I did not like Mariota. We will see if he drafts Winston. We will see. He needs to settle the franchise down and he will have some success. I don’t know if Lovie will take them to the next level.

Joe: If he drafts Mariota or Winston – I hear from scouts more NFL people like Winston over Mariota…

Russo: I’ve heard that too.

Joe: … by drafting a quarterback does that buy Lovie time?

Russo: Oh, I don’t think he is getting fired anytime soon, anyway. I think he is there for at least another two more years. So he can have a chance to rebuild. And if he does have a rookie quarterback that should buy him more time. Winston has baggage, but they need a new quarterback.

Joe: So you would not draft an offensive linemen first overall?

Russo: I would not draft an offensive lineman. It is always risky to draft a quarterback and Winston is risky, but I would draft Winston. Listen, I think Lovie will do a decent job; I just wouldn’t have hired him.

I wouldn’t have hired Livie either!!!! Glazers desperately need a football vp to steer this franchise. Once Lovie is gone in 2-3 years the next coach will benefit from Winston.

    Lovie, you suck!!!!!

    @Iknowmorethanlovie …

Don’t know what team you root for, but it obviously isn’t the Bucs.

Comments like “Lovie, you suck” add nothing to the conversation.

Lovie may not be your choice for head coach, but comments like that are unnecessary.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

And what a long 2 years it will be if Lovie has that long!

  6. jfat Says:

If Lovie is gone in 2-3 years then that likely means Winston failed to live up to the hype. Careful what you wish for.

  7. RastaMon Says:

Lovie will be just good enough to keep his job and everybody frustrated

  8. Connor Says:

I had no idea Winston’s accuser lives in Tampa. Say what you want about Jameis, but drafting him will be a PR nightmare for this franchise.

  9. RastaMon Says:

Connor….we are completely accustomed to PR nightmares…

  10. ARGH_M8E Says:

This team is instantly upgraded with the pick of famous Jameis… And why does everyone seem to forget that we didn’t even have a Offensive Coordinator last year with no O-line (for the Lovie haters). Hellllllo We’ve got DIRK now, remember that night he embarrassed our swashbucklers into suissiom in the 1st half last year smh… Also we’re gonna have (most likely Winston) and some other tasty draft picks…

Ohhhhhhhh buddy…. the ship will b pillaging once again!!!!!!!

    Go BUCS BAAAAAAAABY!!!!!!!!

Almost time!!!! My boys are counting down!!!!
