Jameis Watch: “Embarassed”

March 26th, 2015

JameisCrab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Yes, it’s true. Mike Glennon ran a faster 40-yard-dash time than Jameis Winston and Josh Freeman did at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Joe was stunned when Winston plodded through his 40 in February — 4.97 seconds. Heck, Joe ran a faster time in college, and Joe saw Winston run the bases on the Florida State University baseball team. He didn’t look that slow.

Lovie Smith talked to Joe and media yesterday about Winston’s body and fitness. The head coach said Winston is immature in that area and will develop.

“You know, that’s one part that you say, ‘What can improve?'” Lovie said. “Us getting him on the, you know, proper nutrition, all of that. Lifting in the weight room. When I say he’s an immature athlete right now, he hasn’t had a chance to really develop his body. You say, ‘Hey Jameis, what are you least proud of that’s come out [in the media]?’ He’ll say, ‘The 40-yard dash, I was embarrassed about [my] time.'”

Yes, Winston will be 21 years old on opening day. He’s developing and likely has much learn about professional fitness.

Joe is not concerned. First, the Bucs would have the team nutritionist and strength and conditioning coaching all over him from Day 1. Second, Winston isn’t exactly Refrigerator Perry. He is a great athlete and a great quarterback. The fact he’s not at his peak physically is actually encouraging.

Well he is Embarassing ……FSU didn’t want him back

Weight issues are conditioning issues. You have conditioning issues when you’re about to go pro says a lot about self control. Winston lovers are about to say different, but that’s a fact.

Training for football year round will help also. Welcome to Tampa Jameis. Lovie needs you

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

That’s a wise direction to take, work that flab right off him. We don’t need a QB who looks like a big fluffy biscuit.

  7. Bear the Bucs Says:

Egad ! The Number 1 pick is Infamous Jameis. We are getting a guy who is slow with off the field issues, threw a lot of interceptions in a weak conference, and can’t keep his weight down. Add twenty million dollars and stir. What could go wrong ? Depressing.

  8. Robert 9 Says:

for several years they said bowers would get the conditioning thing down.

either you have they motivation to do it in your gut…..

or theirs the cheeseburger gut, mr. fameis.

no athlete at that age and at that level of competition has any excuse for not deing in perfect condition short of an injury or laziness/stupidity. and you can’t fix stupid.

  9. Dreambig Says:

I am a big time Winston supporter and I cant wait to see Jameis throwing to Evans and Jackson. That could really be a dangerous combination for opposing defenses. Having said that the weight does concern me. Jameis seemed much slower and thicker last year than the year before and that trend will need to stop.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    And Glennon sucks.

    Thee end.

  11. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

He should also be embarrassed about getting his arse beat by MM in the playoff game. Because we all know that winning or losing a game is the best way to determine the better QB. #MMisbetterthanWinston

  12. MadMax Says:

Id be concerned as he gets into his late twenties/early thirties, but not for now.

  13. WS99 Says:

No worries he’ll lose at least twenty pounds practicing in this FL sun during OTA. This is if doesn’t pass out first. Stop practicing in the 110 degree sun lovie.

Did some hijack 87 screen name today?

it’s still better than having a stick figure standing in the pocket, he disappears when he turns sideways and still gets sacked

  17. Stanglassman Says:

I was shocked the 1st I was in the locker room at half time at a FSU game in ’92 and the guys were eating (given out) candy bars and sodas (some sports drinks). Dan Kendra and I spoke to Coach Sexton and we got the athletic department to hire a nutritionist to educate and provide options to the players. I lot of young athletes were never brought up knowing enough about proper nutrition, less so now than it was back then but you would be surprised.

  18. Clint Says:

I am down about 25 pounds since December using the My Fitness Pal application on my iphone. Jameis can do this if I can. We need the BB-Gun Hollerin’ QB.

  19. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

You Jameis lovers are hilarious….OK if this was a marrage and your girl
Had a history of repeatedly explaining her behavior to the police
Made lude and insenstitive comments openly in a public setting
Could not keep herself phyically fit ..when her future depended on being phyiscally fit
Needed to be kept under lock and key for the 5 month leading up to the wedding ,just so none of the above behaviors might jump out again.
    Would you marry he…….Bwahahahahahahaa

  20. Dreambig Says:

Lovie says: “us getting him on, you know, the proper nutrition”. Sounds like a bit of a slip in the both QBs are being considered mantra. Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!

  21. Buc1987 Says:

    WS99…there’s only 1 Buc1987.

Why on earth someone would want to be me I have no idea. Silly notion.

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Winston’s 40 time means nothing. watch the tape. He is an effective situational runner. He moves really well in and around the pocket with the hard to come by natural instincts to sense the pressure and move to a cleaner area while always keeping his eyes downfield for a receiver to break open.

Winston may not have Mariota’s pure running ability – few QBs do. But he’s got something much better – great feel for the game, anticipation and most importantly accuracy with a big arm and great touch on his throws to boot.

Jameis is a waaaaaaaay more effective runner when need be than Glennon.

  23. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

You know what will help the o-line? The qb getting rid of the ball quickly to avoid sacks and this will also help the running game and play action. The qb being patient throwing screen passes, slants, and passes to the backs for short gains. It will keep the defense honest and allow the running game to be effective. Then you can start to throw deep to the trees on the outside and over the middle. Be patient and have long drives down field like 7 or 8 minute drives.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

JoeJoes Fungi Nails…have we not gone over and over and over this ad nauseam?

EVERYONE on this site KNOWS about Winston’s past….that’s EVERYONE.

Just keep repeating yourself daily. Maybe it will make you feel better when you hear his name called out on April 30th, but probably not.

  25. Dreambig Says:

also having an OC with a clue in how to call plays in the NFL will help the Oline. By keeping the D off balance helps the whole offense.

  26. drdneast Says:

Some picture have apparently come up,showing an enlarged Winston. So what.

Sadly, a huge majority of them have nothing better to do than become trolls on blogs.

  27. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Yeah…then why does Joe feel the need to keep posting ad nauseam stories about Jameis
Just because “we know” the stories does not mean they should simply be ignored and discounted ….which many do

  28. Teflon DON Says:

JoeJoesFungiNails please STFU! Jameis will be a buc end of story

  29. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Special teams will be a big help to Jameis and the team this season. Deep punts that must make the opponent drive the length of the field to score. Good kr/pr to put the Bucs in good field position or red zone. Excellent and dependable field goal kicking with good high kickoffs that allow the Buc players to get down the field quickly before the opposing returner can do anything.

  30. bucco brice Says:

He’s not committed to being fit….another red flag…spin it any way you want….this is an important time in his life and he’s not committed….what happens when the money comes and then a frustrating rookie season…might just say f-it, more cheeseburgers…sorry, but the Jamarcus nighmare could happen again

  31. BFFL Says:

Yeah because we all become more athletic as we age..what a joke

  32. drdneast Says:

The behavior you described Fungi, sadly represents about 40 percent of the women today.

    Get a grip, old timer.
We’re drafting a football player, not a choir boy.

  33. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

It will work in the Bucs favor and help Jamies developement if the opposing offense can have at the most 2 long drives(8 or more minutes) that result in field goals. While the Bucs need to have 3 long drives that result in touchdowns giving the defense time to rest and allowing the Bucs to play with the lead. Bucs win at least 10 games if they can average 24 to 27 points a game, TELL ME THAT YOU CAN’T SEE THAT.

  34. jb Says:

  39. bucco brice Says:

I have no hate on for Winston…If he’s the guy, I will be hoping for all the best for him and my Bucs…Picking him just scares the hell out of me…Possibility for another Buccaneer draft disaster is greater with him than MM or a L.Williams….

  40. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    87, I don’t understand that logic…

Mariota beat Winston head-to-head, which obviously means that Mariota is a better QB than Winston (using standard Winstonite logic); which means that MM should/will be our draft pick.

Do u really think Lovie will pick Winston when Dungy is advising him to pick MM?!? I don’t see it happening.

Name one great quarterback that Tony Dungy acquired through the draft or free agency.

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe Shaun King can mentor him!!!

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

    Hold out if you must…

Maybe I should just start sympathizing with the ones that haven’t figured it out yet. Maybe I should feel sorry for them.

  48. Buccfan37 Says:

Calling Glennon skinny is an exaggeration. He has good height for a pocket QB. Reports I’ve heard or read says he has added weight. Some think Winston will start on day one, others see him as a backup originally. A good portion here agree to keep MG as a backup. That’s good enough for me.

  49. Couch Fan Says:

Lol I cant do anything but laugh at the depths the Haters are going to. Talk about anything other than his actual skills. Cuz we all know a great QB is dependent on having a body builder physique and running really fast. LMAO

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!

  50. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

To me, Winston is a slouch compared to Mariota. Not even close in terms of potential or athletic ability, IMO. Mariota has way more potential for success and Winston has way more potential to bust.

No offense, but, you aren’t a paid pro. Neither am I. We are laymen. The vast majority of people who are paid for their opinions on this matter disagree with you on this topic.

    …………….
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the current league-wide trend is to use the shotgun or pistol formation much more frequently than in the past. In 2014, 60 percent of the league’s snaps came out of either the shotgun or pistol formation.

There has been a steady rise since ESPN Stats & Information started charting this category in 2006. In that season, only 19 percent of the snaps came out of the shotgun or pistol formation. But there has been a steady rise in each year since then and the 50-percent barrier was first broken in 2013.
    …………………………..
A rise from 19 percent to 60 percent is not an anomaly, it is a Trend.

  59. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

I just saw Tony Dungy’s “Dad” commerical speaking about boys behavior and disallowing his daughters association with such……Jameis does not stand a chance with Tony and Lovie…..Jameis will not be the Bucs pick….

  60. tmaxcon Says:

Do u really think Lovie will pick Winston when Dungy is advising him to pick MM?!? I don’t see it happening.

I agree that Lovie has no brain and needs someone to make decisions for him that being said do you really think Lovie is going to let Dungy of all people pick his QB. Really that is the stupidest thing I’ve read. Dungy like Lovie is a good guy but would not recognize a good offensive player if he fell in their lap. Dungy and Lovie picking a QB is equivalent to allowing Charles Manson to pick the Citizen of the Year award winner. Neither of them know anything about the topics they are selecting winners for.

  61. Buctebow Says:

A head to head game in COLLEGE has nothing to do with the draft decision that is to be made. Lovie has already stated he is leaning toward Winston at this point in time, but evaluations are not complete. Get used to it MM lovers. Personally I don’t care. I just know we need to get a franchise QB and that there are no guarantees that either one can make it, so throw one of them up against the wall and see if he sticks, or busts.

  62. Buccanoles Says:

Mike Glennon doesn’t neither does Winston.

So what are saying, Joe? That Winston is out of shape? That Winston ran faster in college but now he is slower? Not a good thing I guess. If I were to bet money? I’d say it is a non-issue. Not only will Winston be put under a microscope for being a No. 1 Overall pick, but also put under a microscope by the Bucs for being their starting QB. He’ll put in the work.

Not to say it isn’t a concern that Winston let himself get that way though. Plenty of good players in the NFL ate their way, or coach potato’d their way out of the NFL.

But I don’t think Jameis will do that. This is your job now, you are getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to play a game kids play in their backyard. The least you can do is hit the gym and get on a good diet during the offseason.

Not a problem. Or at least it shouldn’t.

I tried but could not find one person who has ever met Winston that says he is any kind of lazy. In fact, everyone says the exact opposite.

He is immature out of shape, slow, and will not attend the draft what’s not to like? Take someone else. If he does not work Lovie is digging his own grave

If he drafts Mariota and he doesn’t work, he’s digging his own grave as well. So, if you’re digging your grave regardless of who you pick, why not pick the better talent?

You Jameis lovers are hilarious….OK if this was a marrage and your girl
Had a history of repeatedly explaining her behavior to the police
Made lude and insenstitive comments openly in a public setting
Could not keep herself phyically fit ..when her future depended on being phyiscally fit
Needed to be kept under lock and key for the 5 month leading up to the wedding ,just so none of the above behaviors might jump out again.
    Would you marry he…….Bwahahahahahahaa

I think you meant, “Marry her.” If your intent was to say, “He,” there is nothing wrong with that. However, you are criticizing Jameis Winston while using a misogynistic paradigm. Now that I think about it, “He” is probably a Freudian slip.

LEAVE THE FREAKING POLITICS OUT OF IT!!!

I come here to escape that BS!!! It’s sports!!!

  101. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Some thoughts about Fameis conditioning.

First give the kid a break. He was raised in a Southern state with a culture (white and black) of some of the worst dietary habits in the entire nation!!!

Mississippi has the worst health markers in the nation and Alabama is not far behind.

When I worked in Tennessee a native took me to his house for a Sunday dinner.
EVERYTHING…vegetables included was fried. Three different kinds of meat and two dessert choices pie and cake. A friend of mine joked with me that in the south people used to joke you looked poorly if you didn’t have that ruddy complexion. Yeah no high blood pressure!!! LOL

Fameis has probably been spending some off time in Sweet Home Alabammy.

I cannot believe however that FSU doesn’t have world class nutrionists and a healthy training table. And so Noles how did he look during the season. That’s what counts.

I’ve been late to boarding the Fameis bandwagon. But through all the days of doubt I’ve never doubted his work ethic.

This was one of the reasons I was for signing Fameis as early as possible and getting him to OBP to work with our trainers and nutrionists.

Training like a pro will be different than training like a semi pro in college.

Sean King didn’t balloon until after his playing career.

  102. Seminole Bill Says:

Joe may not be concerned but Seminole Bill sure is. We blow this pick and we are deader than the proverbial doornail. Think about it; do the unthinkable and trade down, or trade away the pick and get quality 2-3 players. You have at least a 50/50 chance of being right. We pick wrong and we’re back to Bo Jackson days. Remember him? The RB who would not play for the Bucs, and went to baseball instead, and then when time had lapsed went to football and the Raiders.

  103. Buc1987 Says:

Word of advice…don’t mention Obama…people get so sensitive about that fool.

  104. Buc1987 Says:

Seminole Bill…no Bill we pick wrong and we get another high draft pick down the road and get a new toy.

The NFL has changed since the days of Bo Jackson and rookie contracts are not nearly as bloated as they were in the past.

This won’t set our team back is he fails as much as some people think it will.

I am an FSU grad and supporter of Winston being the #1 pick by the Bucs. However, of all the things that could potentially bother me about him, his failure to use this time to get in the best shape of his life is my biggest concern. He is interviewing for his dream job that will set him financially for the rest of his life. He must have advisors and agents telling him to work his ass off and to eat right.

I criticized Mariota for now showing an outward desire to be a Buc. I must admit that Jameis’ poor shape is comparable. It shocks me that he seemed surprised by his 40 time. Not that the time matters necessarily, but the fact that it seemed shocking to me means he likely did not train at all for it. Just questionable judgement.

  114. WS99 Says:

Then as of last night they changed it to a voiceover and him sitting down on a chair.

I was like somebody said change that chit he’s not going number 1. Idk paranoia is sitting in.

I accept your point. As a journalism major and somebody who worked in TV newsrooms for a couple of decades it saddens me how Faux news has poisoned our political discourse. It’s been horrible for our nation.

BTW Three separate University studies have shown Fox news viewers to be the least informed of the viewers of any news programs. I try to remain impartial and so I’ll add that MSNBC wasn’t much higher. Although one study was particularly damning. When they test folks on world events and geography people who watched NO news at all scored higher than Fox news viewers.

I think I’m sensitive about mixing news or politics tonight because of that horrible murder suicide of the teens in Hudson today.

Winston excelled in playing two sports his whole life what do you mean by lazy? And before I go there I must ask do you follow politics and do you really want to have this debate with me??

  131. Brandon Says:

Erik, I’ve ALWAYS been a monster in the gym… ALWAYs, but it wasn’t until I started taking my diet seriously (and actually added calories into my diet), ditched cardio, and tailored my workouts to train more anaerobically, did I start to resemble what I am now. There’s a TON of science to getting ripped… TONS! Growing up in a poor state, probably with a poor diet, relying on sports to get him in shape, Winston’s only chance of being ripped would be by having elite Adrian Peterson-type genetics… and that’s an incredibly low number of people.

I should be worried, but like I said, if he works as hard as EVERYBODY that knows him says he does, I’m not.

I took it as one. But you’re right, there’s a ton of science and meticulous dieting that goes into achieving one’s physical potential, not to mention a ton of hard work. Winston probably has pretty lousy genetics, when compared to other more sculpted athletes, for putting on size and getting lean, but his genetics are pretty darn good when it comes to chucking a football, making plays, and running an offense.

BTW Agree about Colbert and Stewart. That’s what journalism has devolved into these days. Late night comedians now have more credibility than the so called “news sources”.

Whatever thanks for sharing…I needed that.

  134. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Brandon

Excellent thoughts about getting “ripped”. Diet and genetics are huge.

I remember working out next to a couple of “brothas” in the gym. One was a big very strong guy, his friend very ripped. I was somewhere in the middle. The closest I’ve had to a six pack was a faint outline. One of these guys had a great six pack, the other was built more powerfully but no definition.

As the ripped guy and I checked out progress on our abs in the mirror the big guy comes over and looks at his when his friend said…”man you’ll never see your abs without an xray machine.” OUCH! LMAO

Looking for everything, anything. Desperate, even pathetic. And just think Winston is “so bad” yet is chosen to be picked 1st in an overwhelming fashion over Mariota. Wow, Mariota must REALLY be bad.

Unlike you, the Glazers and Lovie have already done there home work on the kid. I guess it still hasn’t sunk in it yet has it?

“I think they’re gonna run the offense similar to Atlanta the last few years being that they hired their coordinator (Dirk Koetter). And I had a lot of chance to talk to Tampa’s General Manager this past Thursday (at Mariota’s pro day) and what I was told was they have had two different people; private investigators digging deep into Winston’s past and doing a lot of homework on the guy. They’ve talked to about 75 people about his past, 75 sources and my feeling is their finding is that he’s a pretty good guy. At this point – I would be shocked; SHOCKED – if he was not the choice by Tampa.”
    – Gil Brandt

So ya see….he has been investigated by the team. Thee end.

  145. SOEbuc Says:

Oh yeah and I’m not worried about any weight issues or odd angle photographs at the moment

  146. Roland Says:

What concerns me about Winston is the 1 pick every 280 yards passing. While playing with FAR superior talent (Kelvin Benjamin was a far superior talent then Winston in that huddle the same way Mike Evans was far better then Manziel) around him and some of the best Coaches in the country.
Then throw in the poor physical shape coming out of an elite program.
And add in the chance he has bad attitude when he starts to experience losing and DEs who are far faster then he is.
Oh and then add the character issues…

  147. Roland Says:

And give him 20 million in the bank and tell him, ‘Son, now you need to work hard’.
I just don’t see how this ends well for this franchise at all. Well unless you want the franchise another big step closer to London.
    Sad.

  148. passthebuc Says:

WINSTON WILL BE VIEWED AS A BLACK SWAN DRAFT CHOICES.

FOR THOSE NOT UP TO DATE WITH A BLACK SWAN EFFECT IT GOES LIKE THIS.

IT IS AN EVENT THAT “THE DECISION, A FAILURE, WAS NEVER VIEWED AS POSSIBLE. HOWEVER AFTER ITS CONCLUSION WHEN THE FACTS COULD BE EVALUATED WITHOUT EMOTION, IT WAS CLEAR THAT ALL THE SIGNS WERE THERE EVEN THOUGH OVERLOOKED OR DISCARDED BY THOSE IN CHARGE”

  149. MTM Says:

    @ BUC 1987

Yeah Glazers have evaluated Winston and everything’s good. These are the same idiots that kept Jerramy Stevens on the roster. I’m glad all the Winstonites are so all in on the Glazer’s and how they do their homework on player evaluation. If they did their job do you think they would put out 10 years of putrid football.

  150. Buc1987 Says:

@MTM…75 different people by 2 different private investigators….spin it however you want, but he was investigated and everything turned up fine. Yet you call him a human red flag, and that just makes NO sense what-so-ever.

Again spin it however you want, blame the Glazers for hiring 2 investigators to look into Winston’s past and come up with virtually nothing.

You can sure as shyte bet if they did look into his past and found those “red flags” you care so much about, YOU and every other Winston-hater in here would be jumping all over it…

  151. MTM Says:

    @ Buc1987

People that question Winston’s ability to make it in the NFL aren’t haters or spin artists. They just look at the facts objectively. If you need to hire 2 private investigators and interview 75 people to make sure there potential draftee is ok.. there’s a problem. I also question his on field decision making, elongated delivery and his ability to keep him self in decent shape for the upcoming draft in which he is considered the # 1 pick.
As the saying goes. If you marry the stripper don’t be shocked when the sh*t hits the fan down the road. Winston is short term thinking not long term.

  152. Buc1987 Says:

MTM…they had to hire the investigators….after 2 years of constant media doing hit pieces on Winston.

Nothing came back as “red flags” after the investigation was done. The investigators pretty much said …he’s good to go. That he’s not a “human red flag.” I can’t help you if you think that’s not good enough.

Fans were asking the Bucs to do their due diligence on this kid, and the Bucs did it. Yet that’s STILL not good enough for some people, especially yourself.

Don’t think for a second that they aren’t or did not do homework and investigate Mariota as well. Along with Williams too.

    Have a happy day! 🙂
