Bucs Eyeing Boston College Center

March 19th, 2015
Boston College center on Bucs' radar.

Boston College center on Bucs’ radar.

Joe has been adamant that the Bucs should draft nothing but offensive linemen after they select Jameis Winston, followed their choice of an edge rusher.

Between the two milk cartons O-linemen the Bucs drafted last year, and whoever they draft this year, one would suspect a decent lineman or two would shake out from that group.

Unlike defensive ends, offensive linemen are not top-heavy in the draft. Teams expect to find value in the middle rounds.

Enter Andrew Gallik of Boston College. The Bucs sure seem interested in Gallik (6-2, 302), per the words of Tony Pauline of WalterFootball.com. He reported that this week at Boston College’s pro day, a Bucs staffer spent a whole lot of quality time with Gallik.

By all accounts, center Andrew Gallik looked terrific in position drills. The senior sat on his Combine numbers but looked smart and smooth with his footwork and body control. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who sent their assistant offensive line coach to Chesnut Hill for the workout, met with Gallik for several hours last night.

From the breakdown by Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, it seems Gallik is Joe’s kind of player.

NFL COMPARISON: Bryan Stork

BOTTOM LINE: Gallik won’t win many footraces and he might not look as good in the uniform as some others will, but he’s a street fighter in knee braces and he has the power to handle himself when covered by a 3-4 front. Starting-caliber center in a power running game.

If Gallik has good footwork as Pauline suggests, then he can be coached up to pass block.

If the Bucs are seriously considering a center in the draft, why not just sign Wiz? He has a track record in the league, a known commodity. Some have speculated that Wiz wasn’t signed because the Bucs wanted him to play guard. More than likely it was because he was asking for a too much money. He hasn’t been signed yet so maybe the price will come down. It’s also an indication they don’t want EDS to play center. Maybe move EDS to guard, sign Wiz and draft a LT.

Coached up by Lovie’s good buddy Warhop? That sounds great!

  3. mac Says:

I hope he can put on about 20 pounds… 6’2″. 300lbs. is not big enough to drive block a 350 pound nose guard…

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We keep looking at Center…..I guess we are serioiusly considering EDS at guard….or cutting hm….he’s not guaranteed

  5. The Real Malloy Says:

How confident are we that EDS can be a above average guard? Feels like we keep talking center whether its this kid or Wiz…Kind of wondering what the plan for EDS is.

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

I just want our round 2 player to make an impact and start since they are essentially a late 1st rounder. Don’t force the pick; just take BPA between the positions we need.

I would love if we took a OT like Fisher from Oregon; and then an OG in round 3 personally. There should be a couple OTs in round 2 that grade as potential 1st rounders; or get a C Cam Erving from FSU.

I only want a DE in round 2 if we feel like he is a true BPA type player and not a reach for need.

“I hope he can put on about 20 pounds… 6’2″. 300lbs. is not big enough to drive block a 350 pound nose guard…”

My cousin, former Bucs LS and SB champion Ryan Benjamin, weighed in at 275 tops. He’s a little under 6 foot.

He got bowled over too many times in his second season and Gruden let him go.

  8. bucco brice Says:

should be a decent tackle prospect left with 2nd round pick…then find C-RG position fix from 3rd round on…

  9. Lynn Overdeer Says:

Is Warhop still here? I thought he was part of the problem, not the solution!

  10. Stanglassman Says:

Warhop had sooo much talent and help from the OC I don’t know how he couldn’t put together a great line. It must be because he is Lovie’s friend you know how those guys are.

Give me a break. Let the guy coach one year with a little talent and a OC before you jump all other him.

  11. scott Says:

O-Linemen are going to fly off the board this year! a lot of needy teams

  12. bucrightoff Says:

Very doubtful they take OLine 2nd round. Lovie’s gonna want a pass rusher or linebacker. And he doesn’t really care about OLine anyways (see his consistently horrible lines in Chicago).

  13. BIGPAPI Says:

The Bucs didn’t need a great line last year just not the worst in the league. I don’t know how Warhop wasn’t fired immediately after the season was over. There was not one player on the offensive line that got any better at all last year.

  14. bucco brice Says:

can’t see any pure right ends left with 2nd round pick…the top guys will be gone early 1st round…dropoff from the elite group to next is big…LE type maybe in 2nd round…

  15. Pickgrin Says:

I would much rather have Cam Erving. He can play any of the 3 OL positions well and start in year 1.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    Pickgrin…let’s go all FSU!

  17. Pickgrin Says:

I’m totally down with it ’87 if the draft would fall that way.

    1. Jameis Winston
    2. Cameron Erving
    3. Tre Jackson

Talk about an instant upgrade for your offense….

  18. Pickgrin Says:

Pick up Benjamin and Greene in 5 years when both are free agents… LOL

  19. bucco brice Says:

erving in 2nd, jackson in 3rd would be perfect! …i think erving’s gone 1st round though, jackson might be 2nd rounder

  20. Buc1987 Says:

    ha ha ha

  21. bucrightoff Says:

Cam Erving is projected to go between 20 and 25 in most mocks. So unless the Bucs are trading up to get him, he’ll be gone. Besides, he hasn’t played for the Bears or Cowboys so he’s not welcome here.

  22. CanadianBucsfan Says:

If Wiz is as talented as people on here are saying why are the Raiders letting him walk? They have more cap space than any team so why let a talented 25 year old offensive lineman walk?

  23. I love hookers Says:

    Because it’s the Raiders

  24. ddneast Says:

This guy sounds like a fifth round pick.

  25. MadMax Says:

Ali Marpet! That guy is a diamond in the rough!

  26. ddneast Says:

CanadianBucsFan, the Riaders signed the backup to the type of contract that the Wiz is looking for.
I haven’t heard that he signed yet so he may have a figure way higher than what teams are interested in paying.
