“Why They Didn’t Make It”

February 5th, 2015

daquan bowers 0101So what was Seahawks general manager Jon Schneider doing six days before the Super Bowl?

He was studying guys like Da’Quan Bowers.

Joe talked to the Seattle GM about that at Super Bowl Media Day in Phoenix, and he shared that he spent most of the previous day studying why the Seahawks made draft picks, why they didn’t make picks and re-analyzing their processes and the results.

“Why didn’t this player make it, why didn’t that player make it, you know, kind of going back through the different drafts,” Schneider said. “So then you kind of focus on that and you come up with a list of characteristics of why they didn’t do it. So then you kind of focus on that and you’re able to move forward.”

Joe really was fascinated by this chat. It was clear Schneider is benefiting from having five plus years on the job and plenty to study before his sixth draft this spring. Bucs GM Jason Licht and Lovie Smith don’t have that kind of data to review.

Joe wonders what the Bucs’ internal study of their shocking all-offense, 2014 draft would reveal. Sadly, they drafted players like Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Charles Sims, who seemingly were perfect fits for what would have been Jeff Tedford’s offense.

    Licht has been around the block with some excellent mentors as well. I’m not at all confident in Lovie making personnel decisions though.

    BTW, that’s no slam as coaches tend to get fixated on certain players. Let the scouts and GM do their job.

  2. WS99 Says:

    DQB played well inside, very well to my surprise.

  3. Robert 9 Says:

    their analyzing skills consist of

    “DANG, that guys fast”

    “Man, you see how big that dude is”

  4. OB Says:

    We don’t know what Koetter’s offense is going to be so we will have to wait.

    We saw Lovie’s and it doesn’t make the high school test.

    As for defense, Joe can you tell us why or why you think why they kept playing ineffectives so long? Can the HC and DC be that stupid?

  5. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Da’Quan Bowers is a football God.

    Ha!

  6. Ray Rice Says:

    They looked at Ricky Dudley…. I mean ASJ and said, “Dam! He has plenty of upside and all of the intangibles to play the position.” What they didn’t take into account was the lack of heart and will to play.

  7. Robert 9 Says:

    exactly ray!

    No teams “fans” hate on thier team more than bucs fans.

    Pathetic

  10. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    I can’t really rag on Rah and Rockstar over the Bowers pick considering at the time I thought it was a steal of the draft getting a potential #1 talent in the second round. Goes back to my post in a previous thread, we’ve all been wrong on stuff at one point or another. Hopefully the guy can realize his physical potential someday, but sadly I don’t think the Bucs are that team.

    You have to look at what a players mind and heart run the 40 in. John lynch for example mind ran a 4.2 forty his heart ran and 4.1 forty and his body ran a 4.7 – hall of fame numbers

  13. Destinjohnny Says:

    His replacement j phillips ran a 4.4 forty but he brain ran a 5.6 forty

    Somewhere along the way Lovie Jr. forgot we’re a 2-14 team.

    Simple as that.

    I’ll take a cut at this.

    They are both stalwarts living in the 90’s?

  16. Tom Edrington Says:

    @theKevin:

    When a team goes 2-14 and looks incredibly miserable in the process, I think folks who pay good money for their tickets are allowed to hate what they’re watching.

    I would hate to be paying $300 plus for a seat to watch the incredible ineptness that was put on display, especially with NO home wins….

    Obviously The Kevin loves what he saw last year, which has to make us all wonder about “The Kevin”

    @ the kevin
    You didn’t tell people to hang themselves today? What’s up, in a moderately good mood?

  18. "TheKevin" Says:

    @everyone

    Yes you all should definitely go hang yourselves

    Don’t take my moderateness for weakness

    You all are still idiots.

    No one likes 2-14 but to just throw insults at the coach and team is pathetic.

    That’s ok when they start winning you all be sucking a big one

    The MF Kevin,

    Our 30% win percentage in our last 100 games warrants unruly fans.

    Are you ok with the state of the Bucs? You should rephrase your words, “buccaneer franchise, worst in the NFL by far”.

  23. SteveK Says:

    The Kevin,

    You’re a damn fool.

    The Bucs are the worst team in the nfl. Fans showing their displeasure is our way of showing we “care” about our team.

    The real “fans” that should be in question are those who are “a-ok” with the state of the Bucs. (You)

  24. Pickgrin Says:

    “Sadly, they drafted players like Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Charles Sims…”

    What – really? C’mon Joe – you are better than that. You can’t possibly judge draft picks accurately after only a rookie season in which both had serious injuries. Both flashed some talent in real NFL games and to expect more from any rookie is unrealistic. Very few rookies have great seasons like Evans did – VERY few.

    If that is the way you are now leaning on both those picks Joe – then I think you are going to be proven wrong over the next 2 years in both cases. L&L had a solid 1st draft considering they only had 3 good picks to work with.

  25. "TheKevin" Says:

    @steve k

    You must be a new fan

  26. BirdDoggers Says:

    Draft good football players. Simple philosophy but hard to identify who will be good at the next level. It’s unfortunate that Tedford couldn’t help mold the drafted players from last year. It appeared Lovie wanted to help his OC by drafting all offensive players. Koetter is a good coach and should be able to take the pieces and put together a decent offense.

  27. OB Says:

    Thanks Biff, I thought they just had their heads up and locked.

  33. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    I grew up close to Boston and they don’t call us Massholes for no reason.

  34. iamkingsu Says:

    @joe

    Really Joe? You’re going to judge Sims and ASJ after 1 season playing under Arroyo?? You raved about ASJ all off-season (even while he was out) and especially when he finally got on the field. Go back and look at some of your “training camp notes”. Tedford was still there before Sims went down take that into consideration

  35. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    True ‘dat St Pete Bucs about fans of the northeast teams making haters on here look like adoring fans. Im not sure which site now, but there actually were Patriots fans prockaiming their Super Bowl winning QB (name not used to avoid JBF comment moderation) was finished and should be traded after the first couple games this past season! I’m Starting to wonder if the crappy cold weather up north causes more fanaticism in the respective fanbases?

  36. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Toes..remember in 2013 when the Bucs went up to N.E. and the fans were booing the Pats in the first qrtr because the game was so close early on.

    Red Sox fans are worse than Pats fans though…that I know first hand.

  37. BucIt941 Says:

    I don’t think drafting ASJ and Sims was a bad move just yet. Both showed a few flashes but were banged up throughout their rookie year on a offense that kind of sucked regardless. With the new OC I feel like ASJ stock just went up as did Brandon Myers. Looking back at how he utilized T. Gonzalez in the ATL offense it will put ASJ into better positions to make plays as a safety valve.

    As for Sims I feel like that’s Lovie’s personal pick. He has all the same traits as (a poor mans) Matt Forte which is why I believe they jumped on him in the 3rd. I feel he’ll have a breakout year in 2015. With that being said I would still go after a more power back like Mark Ingram, or take a fliers chance on Trent Richardson and see if they can squeeze something out of that kid, he’s still young and has a shot at bouncing back, has all the talent and tools just needs to show production.

  38. BucIt941 Says:

    Just to clarify, with Richardson I would only give a low risk contract incase he really is a dud. With Sims, and Rainey He wouldn’t be pressured to come in as an immediate starter. Just see if he can earn his spot and maybe get back to college form.

  39. LargoBuc Says:

    @kevin

    Bro this is a sports blog. Fans come here to vent. We arent “hating” we are criticizing our team which is human nature. Consider since 2008 when we finished 9-7 and had our playoff hopes torn from us in the most painful way imagineable we have went 3-13 10-6(3rd place no playoffs) 4-12 7-9 4-12 2-14 so yes alot of said criticism is going to be overwhelmingly negative. That dosent make us any less of fans. Otherwise we would hop on some other teams fan base until Tampa’s relevant again. We are all die hards. We all have opinions. All things considered those opinions are desevedley negative. Get a freaking clue!
    BTW I HATE the Boston Red Sox more than I hate any pro sports team! Their fans are cocky condescending ignorant jerks! I cant stand how they come to the trop acting tough talking spit to Rays fans. I hate the Sox way more than I hate the Falcons Panthers or Saints. Sorry saw some talk about fans up north jus saying 🙂

  40. The True Buc Fan Says:

    @everyone and @Joe

    Stop please Joe posting articles where these people can come on here and tell a Super Bowl coach how to coach and evaluate talent (man Briggs and Urlacher are horrid), and how they should draft players, Jason Licht, was he a bum off the street? Oh wait he worked in the Super Bowl Champs front office for years, but the posters here think Lovie should be fired for Schiano and Dominiks mistakes, and Licht should be to. It’s the same people that called for Dungy’s head in 96, and it’s also the people that think Glennon is a franchise qb. Joe please help a real Buc fan out, please…..

    _____________

    Preach! This forum has turned into a comedy routine for me. I used to come on here and waste my time making explanations and actually talking a little football, then I realized who Joe was pandering to. Everything from Joe is negative and everything from the readers (and commenters) is negative.

    I can only laugh at the hypocrisy and foolish notions in here. Clearly, many of these fans don’t know the game and the way building a team works. All they know is “fire Lovie” “blame it on Lovie” “blame the Glazerss” “bring back Gruden” “draft Winston” “Mariota is too nice”

    I’m outta here. I can’t take this joke of a page and the moronic comments by these pessimistic posters. I’m not alone. All the friends I introduced to the page can’t stand it either.

    Continue to wallow in your misery. And stupidity.

  42. JVNootz Says:

    Clearly, we need to fire Lovie. But first, we need to fire the Glazers. Then hire Jeff Vinik. After that, Bring Joe Lombardi back from the dead and make him our Head Coach. Make a phone call and get Aaron Rodgers here, pronto! Now that all that is in place, fire Licht, hire Bill Parcels as GM. He’ll make Joe Montana the QB coach and …well…we need a Defensive Coordinator. Hmm. Maybe Monte Kiffin can come in and work his magic again. Chucky can over see EVERYTHING and write our offensive plays.

    Make a few trades here and there and we can draft the entire Florida State Seminoles team from last year. Them boys know how ta win! Speaking of which, is Bobby Bowden available?

    Moving on, this stadium has had enough, it’s time to build a new one. We’ll just break down the Ray J and use the same pieces to build a newer more modern stadium. Can’t be that hard, I used to make stuff with Legos, tear it down and make something completely different all the time. I’m sick of paying money to go to games so let’s get a BIG OLE TV and hang it on the outside of the stadium so I can watch for free from my tailgate.
    We still need a solid back up, so I propose we make the necessary trades (I dunno the next 40 years of 3rd round draft picks) for the entire Seahawks defense. Except Sherman. That dude is too loud. Get rid of McCoy and replace him with Such (ya know, cuz McCoy is too soft) personally, if a player doesn’t have some sort of arrest report or suspension (preferably rape allegations) then I don’t want him here.

    It’s that easy people. I don’t understand why you guys can’t understand it. Not like winning out, winning the division, breezing through the SB every year is THAT difficult.

    Look at our fine history! We’ve been nothing but winners for over 30 years! Us Bucs fans just aren’t used to this losing stuff. Definitely all Lovie’s fault.

  43. ddneast Says:

    I agree Kevin. But tees,people aren’t really fans. Most of them are just trolls and jerks.
