“What Would You Do?”

February 20th, 2015

For some, leaving college to enter the NFL is a no-brainer. It’s a chance to reach their dream. Become a man.

Others get pushed out of college for a variety of reasons.

When Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was asked why he was leaving college for the NFL with two years of eligibility left, well, the way Winston explained it, the decision was a no-brainer.

“It was a hard decision,” Winston said. “Especially losing to the Ducks. I hate to lose. But at the end of the day, it is about family. One thing else: It is four offensive linemen that I had that are going bye, Nick O’Leary and Rashard Greene. Now if you were playing quarterback at Florida State, what would you do?”

Winston could have gotten killed if he stayed. Florida State’s offensive line was shaky last year, even though four of those linemen are at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine. The combine doesn’t often invite slugs to participate.

In addition, Winston would have lost his top two targets, O’Leary and Greene; both are expected to be selected during the first two days of the draft.

There was nothing more for Winston to prove. Joe can’t blame him.

Might as well go for 100 Winston articles today and make a record Joe. Are we gonna get one on his bowel movements today as well?

  2. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

So he quit on his school when things were not stacked in his favor…is that what you are saying ?

  3. WS99 Says:

Love the kids attitude. Peyton n Brady, that’s what I’m talking about. Dream big kid dream big.

  4. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

He likes Peyton for his Pizza connections and Brady for Hot wife

  5. Jeagan1999 Says:

He made the right choice leaving…as did Mariota. Not much left to prove in college, for either of them. How he will fare in the pros is anybody’s guess. Still lean Mariota/Trade down, but I think Winston showed this process wasn’t too stressful for him. Look forward to watching these guys throw tomorrow.

  6. armchairGM Says:

If he is drafted by the Bucs he might have to worry about what he left behind at FSU if Lovie and Licht don’t get the offensive line sorted out.

Mariota had eligibility too. But, I’m sure it’s ok in his case.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

JW better lose some weight….learn how to run real fast….because….if he comes to the Bucs….he will perhaps have Oline problems regardless.

Bye…for now….will catch up later this evening after the Winston manifesto (broken into multiple articles) has slowed.

  9. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

I have to admit….I really like his attitude. Now don’t confuse that with his off camera personality. But his attitude toward football is far and away more impressive when hearing and seeing him speak. At this point the only thing I have a mjort problem with is him having a relapse in his decision making after her is drafted. But I really like his attitude toward the game. I could see a team rallying around him. Sometimes that is worth more than many would think.

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    “What Would You Do?”

Judging by the pic, I’d let him go to the bathroom.

  11. Bert Says:

    @fungi nails
If that’s what you took from the article, I guess your thinking would be Mariota also quit on his team by not coming back for another year when he could have since he also had another year of eligibility. Mariota quit on his team without delivering his team a national championship. Right?

  12. Posey99 Says:

All day Jameis Watch. Its as fun as the dentist.

Joe needs to change this website to JameisBuc.com….maybe you could cover some other potential draft picks who are performing at the combine this week who arent named Jameis? Just wait until tomorrow and we see how he throws an NFL ball with his terrible mechanics, but Im sure yall will blame it on the nerve issues he’s having in his shoulder!

You use to be my go to source for good content and inside info regarding the bucs now it is only about your heart throb Jameis Winston, we get more then 1 draft pick this year, step your game up Joe!

  15. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Surely you have better pictures Joe. Perhaps another photoshopped picture of someone in a Bucs uni? Haha

  16. BK Says:

Mariota to Joe “I dont have any control over the doubters”. Bam!

I heard your question Joe…kinda slanted compared to the rest of the journalists…go listen to the tape…and tell me your not biased again. I guess when you make up your mind who the best QB is in November….its hard to break the groove.

@ KMAC1322….agree 100%…I am not a Jameis hater..rather a bomb thrower at the endless pimping of Jameis stories…at the expense of many positions on the Bucs needing upgrade and many interesting draft prospects…
I’d be perfectly fine if Jameis is the Bucs QB…however he is not my preference

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    “Stop the propaganda” —

propaganda is a Brian Williams news cast not a Winston article from the combine where he spoke / appeared live today. not propaganda but relative news. I might add news all bucs fans should embrace when it pertains to their new quarterback. Go Winston! Go Bucs!

  21. SuperSam Says:

Joe has to be the worst judge of character EVER! First Johnny Rehab, now this clown!? I just watched his press conference and this kid is a MORON. Does he think answering questions like that is gonna impress Lovie and Jason? I Mean really? CMON MAN.

  22. Barry Says:

    Winston = Scam IMO

  23. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

I can see some of yiu were clearly not here last year when Joe was infatuated with Johnny Rehab. Articles everyday with pictures of him partying and acting like a douchebag, and people wonder why he checked into rehab?

The Winston hard-on will not stop unless Winston is passed on by the Bucs like Johnny Rehab was last year, which was hilarious on this site.

Mariota graduated, its what most people go to college for. He finished early.

  25. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

@SuperSam…typical articulation from a FSU undergrad

  26. armchairGM Says:

Winston was very likable on the podium and even loose during a behind the scenes photo shoot where he was dancing, but I dunno like someone else said I just like the other intangibles beside throwing the rock that Mariota brings to the table.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    SuperSam

your choirboys and hypocrite pig head coach are 2-14…… Screw choirboys bring on the passion and the desire to win. go watch church league softball or tee ball if you want perfect angels. the world is not perfect and teams must be able to manage all types of personalities. not to mention Winston has no current or pending issues. civil suits are a joke and are meaningless so don’t even bother with that.

Wow, so a Heisman winner abandoned, in your own words, a STRONG 2015 team? They would have been set up for another title run but their own QB walked out on them.

Man, that’s too bad for his Duck teammates. He put himself above the team.

  29. Eric Says:

Must be such a bad day to be a hater.I can just imagine their giddiness about the shoulder.

Then it all came crashing down.

    Only gonna get worse tomorrow.

    Go Jaboo. Excellent job today.

  30. SuperSam Says:

Yea cuz Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers all go up to the podium and talk like this clown. Very immature and basically laughed off all of his serious concerns.

  31. Lovie equals 2015 Blackouts Says:

Oh whatever…. bring in the clown… bring on the circus!

  32. Ernest T. Bass Says:

Too arrogant! I hope he is the same way meeting with Coaches and GMs, because they are turned off by arrogant kids!

The way he talks turns teams off, he is worse than Raheem. And didn’t want to go into details about lies, stealing, vandalism etc. That will not fly with team interviews!

  33. unbelievable Says:

so what’s he gonna do behind our o-line then?

  34. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

For the record, Mariota and Winston both had every right to leave. I’m just showing how utterly ridiculous Fungi’s argument is.

Winston could rescue an old lady and cat from a burning building and people like this would find a way to denigrate him over it.

  35. SuperSam Says:

Its one thing to be confident, totally different beast when you go up to the podium comparing yourself to legends. This kid is in for a rude awakening. This aint college son.

Some people go to college… to get a degree. He graduated early… whoops. What is winstons degree in again, I forget?

  37. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Posey

And as I posted after that, they both have every right to go pro whenever they want. Shall we make a list of every single player that has foregone their eligibility for the draft?

The reality is, some people hate Winston. And those people will take every opportunity to criticize him.

Hell, let’s look at everyone that didn’t complete their degree. Are they all bad people? Or just Winston?

  38. ddneast Says:

No Tmaxcom, hat Joe is doing is called propaganda. What Brian Williams did was not propaganda. What Brian Williams did was lie about himself. What Fox, or should we say FIXED News does, is propaganda. Go look up the definition of propaganda, you might enlighten yourself for a change.

  39. lurker Says:

did people even watch the press conference or only read it? mr. winston is very affable and confident. you silly little people getting bent are funny. he is sure of himself and his skills.

and ernest bass, you have no idea what turns “coaches/gm’s off” or what they look for. you are the “arrogant” one thinking you do. just silly. smh

  40. Posey99 Says:

Mariota graduated. Winston did not. Making a case against Mariota for abandoning his team is absolutely false.

  41. Eric Says:

I guess we need to call the Bucs and voice our displeasure if they draft any underclassmen.

    Bunch of quiters.

    You people are deranged.

We members of the Seminole Nation are just fine with Jameis. We like the Heismen and NC.

Go Jaboo. Love the fire and confidence. Winning the Super Bowl is what the goal should be every year. Great attitude and highly needed on this team.

April 30th is going to be a great day indeed.

  42. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Posey

Do you have a problem with every early entry who has not graduated in the entire history of the draft? Or just Winston?

Secondly, plenty of other players graduated and chose to play on. Mariota could have. He didn’t.

And I zero problems with either. But, the hate for Winston is so obvious and it has zero to do with leaving early. It’s comical the ways people try to justify criticizing Winston. You hate him. We get it.

  43. MarshallU Says:

In other words, “Florida State is gonna suck next year and I didn’t want to stay and play with scrubs who won’t make me look good”

  44. Eric Says:

Man just think if we get Jameis he will be throwing to that quiter Mike Evans.

Abandoned A&M after two years. Gosh I don’t recall hearing a peep out of anybody about that when we drafted him last year.

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Okay, I finally got to watch Winston’s presser.

I want Mariota, but it was a good presser for Winston. I came away feeling a bit better about him, but he still has a long way to go.

I also watched Lovie’s combine presser.

What kind of quarterback do they want?

One who can make a variety of throws, makes good decisions and is mobile in the pocket.

That sure sounds more like Mariota.

  46. Luther Says:

I liked his attitude on the podium. It ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up. He accomplished more than Mariota and that’s not a slight on Mariota at all.

  47. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Jameis Winston could walk on water and the HATERS would criticize him for not being able to swim

  48. Bert Says:

    @BananaHammock
    So true

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

btw…it was also said that no QB is “pro ready”

  50. carlstoe Says:

Lurker, you think teams like someone walking into an interview bragging? I look good, going to beat Brady in Superbowl? Its a job interview! Ebonics also doesn’t help during an interview!

  51. NO-LINE Says:

Trade back!! If I’m not mistaken we won a superbowl wiith Brad Johnson.. The game is won/lost in the trenches.

Jameis isn’t being arrogant…he’s aways a happy go lucky kid. That’s Jameis!

  52. P'cola Buc Says:

Jameis has a very strong presence. His stance kinda took me back as well. On the other hand the kid has put himself really out there. He has now no choice but to throw out all the stops and succeed. He brashly put his name amongst Manning and Brady. He is all about positiveness. One thing is for sure, if the Bucs finally choose him he will shake things up in a way that has never been experienced by this franchise in its history.

  53. Eric Says:

Gru used to always say his goal going into a season was to win a championship.

“Were trying to win a championship man”….

What in the world is wrong with that? Thats what everyone is trying to do.

  54. P'cola Buc Says:

I find it fascinating the contrasting personalities of Mariota and Winston. One is the quiet, non self assuming individual while the other is the brash, bragging outgoing guy. Both can succeed in the pros. A comparison to pros in other sports could be Joe DiMaggio vs Mohamed Ali.

  55. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    NO-LINE Says
“If I’m not mistaken we won a superbowl wiith Brad Johnson.”

And a head coach that knew every play of the Raiders offense that year. Brad Johnson didn’t win that game. Jon Gruden did.

  56. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t think Winston was arrogant in the presser. And I’m a Mariota guy.

I think he was confident. He actually scored (some) points with me.

I still think Mariota is the better QB though.

  57. OneBuC55 Says:

    True statement Bonzai…

No QB is “pro-ready” coming in…some just have shorter learning curves…In the case of this QB class, Winston seems to be the one with the shortest learning curve…Not taking anything away from Mariota because he’s obviously very smart and articulate…It just may take him a little longer to develop on the field due to his lack of experience in a pro-style offense…Unless Chip Kelly gets his hands on him of course…

  58. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Nick O’Leary TE is looking a little slow, but has a great build and excellent hands at the combine. Only one with no gloves, has caught everything. Precise route running.

  59. Skyline Crew Says:

Mariota got his degree….why would he need to stay. Winston played two years. He doesn’t have a degree. He should have stayed and got his degree. It does sound like he left FSU because he was afraid of what would happen. If some of us see it that way then I’m sure other teams do as well. At least the ones that still have him on their boards.

  60. Yungry Says:

Can’t wait for Mariota to show Winston who is boss like on January 1st! Winston will need his sore shoulder excuse when he gets lit up, thats why it was reported today… See what happened was….

  61. NO-LINE Says:

BuccaneerBonzai your missing the point.. Trent Dilfer is a Superbowl Champ! Everybody thinks you need a Peyton, Elway or Rogers to win a Superbowl, but the fact is those guys come around every 10 years or so and the last one was Andrew Luck! Trade back, get multiple picks, build O-line and D

  62. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @OneBuC55

“seems” to have is the key word there. In truth, no one really knows until they are in the NFL.

  63. Skyline Crew Says:

I think it is funny the Mariota haters get all upset when the tables are turned on them. Joe has succeeded in dividing the fan base.

    ————————————-

confidence is very important in a job interview. swagger has been missing from this team for a while and i think lovie, licht, glazers will appreciate it. also, interviewers look for different things when interviewing for different jobs. this is just football, after all. communication is important and mr. winston is very capable is communicating despite your ignorant, bigoted remark. mr. winston is affable, infectious, confident, and everything you could ask for as a franchise qb.

  66. Tony Says:

so winston had premium talent around him, all 5 star recruits….what did Mariota have around him?

  67. Posey99 Says:

    @Love and warrick
I like both of them saying I hate winston is also false. It’s Winstons character concerns i’m not fond of. If he was a linebacker or defensive end, ok maybe. He’s a quarterback, sure I’d take him, but not #1 overall. If the FSU case gets dismissed before now and the draft and nothing else pops up between now and then I would say he might be worth the chance. Still, you have a guy just as talented (and in some ways more talented) than him staring you right in the face.

  68. Luther Says:

Didn’t Matt Barkley stay to get his degree? How did that work out? Come out now and get your career started. Great opportunity to play for my favorite team too.

  72. Pawel Chrobak Says:

The sad part is that most of the casual bucs fans will only recognize Jamesis Winston as a theif and a rapist. But if you follow through all this, he really isn’t a bad person, just a country personality. I hope the Bucs draft him because I like him, not ashamed to say it.

  73. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Meanwhile Joe leaves out the obvious speculation that has surrounded Fameis decision.

It wasn’t HIS decision. Fameis was more than likely told that he had worn out his welcome as the heat continued to rise in Tallahassee.

It was time for Fameis to move on for ALL concerned!

  74. cmurda Says:

The Winston haters are there doing there thing; hating. They aren’t very good at it. Attacking his English language. There’s a huge difference between being poorly spoken and having a southern accent. This man was extremely respectful and said exactly what I wanted to hear and he meant it. I’ve saw all the polls and the majority have the 2 QB’s neck and neck. The media influences the polls anyway. They mean nothing. Any NFL GM would laugh if asked about the reliability of these polls. The one area the haters neglect to cover is the on-field performance. Pretty hard to hate on a guy that just wins isn’t it? So, go ahead and resort to allegations that never materialized, mistakes in his past as a 20 year old which he openly acknowledges, his speaking. Go ahead and spend your days hating while I enjoy the next 15 years of Jameis being the face of this franchise and single-handedly solving our inability to have a franchise QB. I’ll also enjoy the wins that have been so hard to come by the last decade. Look, your welcome to join the bandwagon anytime but in your little hating hearts you’ll always know the hypocrites you really are.

  75. mikeh Says:

  76. Posey99 Says:

    @luther
“No charges were filed, so what more do you need?”

You do realize the FSU lawsuit isn’t over right? Because “no charges were filed” is what it’s all about. Theres claims that The university protected him- that’s a serious problem. Maybe not true, yes. But if they hear her case there’s a good chance Winston is drug back into it to testify. And you can’t yet rule out a civil suit against him. Like I said if it’s dismissed before the draft that’s one thing but if not it’s going to be a huge risk for a team taking him.

  77. lurker Says:

He leaves it out because it is utter bullcrap, but it’s red meat for the HATERS.

There are NO STORIES about FSU wanting him out. None. Not a single article about anyone telling Jameis to leave. Not even ESPN or the NYT went there. Not even with “anonymous sources.” NO ONE HAS EVER VERIFIED ANYTHING THAT EVEN COMES CLOSE TO THIS.

Do you have any idea how much money Jameis made that university? Do you really think they want Sean Maguire or JJ Constantino jerseys for sale instead of Winstons?

Do you honestly believe that Jimbo would rather have Maguire or Constantino running his offense rather than Jameis?!?!?! Give me a freaking break with this BS.

  88. cmurda Says:

    @SteveK,

That’s not an impossible scenario. I think if we go the route of avoiding a QB though it has to mean a trade down. If LW ends up pulling a Clowney and gets hurt or doesn’t resurrect the D Line then Lovie is out next year. It would be a reckless move for Lovie/Licht to draft LW #1 with the glaring need at QB and the rare opportunity to land a franchise QB. It also remains a possibility that the Bucs still land LW at #3 or 4 after a trade-down. I’m all for a trade down but it has to be a big haul to go down more than 2 spots. In my dreamworld, the Bucs trade down 2 spots and still land Winston.

  89. SuperSam Says:

    Thanks MIKEH!

  90. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

This site is full of hate and immaturity.

The same people that question Winston’s maturity, might need to look in the mirror.

Either that or go back and read some of their own comments…

    Immaturity Winston? Really?

Come to JBF, and you will find children all over this site these days.

    Children.

  91. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Who’s the nursery school teacher? Joe?

  92. White Tiger Says:

C’mon, this is a fluff story. The kid would have come out last year after winning the Heismann and the National Championship…but the league rules wouldn’t allow it..

Kid Fameis is about Kid Fameis – no doubt he’s very talented, but something makes him tough to live with…whether it’s personality, habits, or attitude (maybe he channels a little Jeff George when he gets hungry..)?

I’m sure he’ll make someone very happy, one day, eventually…just don’t think he’s as “NFL Ready” as the FSU/Kid Fameis fanboys think. Personally, the guy reminds me of Josh Freeman, but with a side of sketch.

Please stop with the Kid Fameis fluff pieces though…because now whenever I hear his name…I think of Brian Williams telling the story about how he once rescued a kitten from the roof of a home in New Orleans, as his helicopter came under-fire while filming the homeowners bodies as they floated by him in a nearby canal as hurricane Katrina was making landfall.

  93. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

No question Winston is immature. That’s not up for debate. Warren Sapp was immature, Mike Williams was immature, Aqib Talib was immature, etc. All very talented. The only question is will that immaturity turn into bad habits like it did for all the above players? I trust the kid is walking on eggshells following what he went through at FSU, then again he did holler a popular sexual joke without any thought. That’s not something you do after being accused of rape, regardless if you are innocent or guilty. So I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that. On the field however his talent is unquestionable.

At least some of us aren’t putting the cart before the horse and saying things like it’s a done deal that he is going to be a Buc. Does nobody remember what happened last year?

I’m sure Joe and Eric were contemplating about carpooling to the Skyway after the Bucs PASSED on a chance to draft Johnny Rehab.

  94. LOYALbucsfan Says:
