Meet Dirk Koetter

February 12th, 2015

No deer for young Dirk

Well, it sure looks as if new Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has thrown around his weight during the handful of days he has been on the coaching staff.

If Koetter told Lovie he could salvage turnover-prone Josh McCown, don’t you think McCown would still be on the Bucs roster?

As Joe’s old football coach used to say, “You damned right.”

Recently, Bucs official multimedia maven Scott Smith had a sitdown with Koetter to go over his upbringing and his coaching philosophy. Koetter noted his love of football came when his friends growing up in Idaho would go deer hunting with their fathers but Koetter would tag along with his dad, a football coach, to work instead.

Oh, and Koetter told Smith what is music to Joe’s ears: He will craft his offense around the strengths of whoever is on the roster.

I think that’s what he was told to say. Smoke screen. Just politically correct.

Please don’t have a heart attack, die, or take a college coaching gig before the season starts.

Let’s hope we keep V-Jax and get another WR in here to compete for the WR3 spot. Now that we are cutting players I hope V-Jax isn’t a casualty. Maybe he will restructure his contract. And we need linemen on both sides. Lets hope we bring in a DE like JPP Orakapo (if he’s not resigned), or Hardy if he can keep his hands to himself. .

    Couple of things…

…first, he gets me really excited to see what he’ll do here.

Second, his #1 concern is turnovers. To me, that hints he leans toward Mariota.

Thirdly, later in the interview, when asked about the things Matt Ryan did and how they could applied in Tampa, he avoided, saying that every quarterback is different, that so long as an offense is built around the quarterback’s strengths, he will be successful.

Now, maybe it’s just me, but his avoidance leads me to believe the quarterback they are targeting is a different style QB than Ryan.

Also, a fast, short passing game reduces turnovers as well.

The clues are lightly peppered in the interview, but he refused to reveal an offensive scheme he is leaning toward. That, in and of itself, is a clue. Because if he were going the same as with Ryan, he would have no reason to hide it.

So I don’t think the Bucs are taking a pocket passer. Hence, the pick will be Mariota.

I know that Winston supporters will insult and refuse to accept this, but that’s what I gleaned from the interview personally.

  5. Mister Niceguy Says:

Also, he seemed to like Murphy.

I don’t believe we need another #3 this year. I believe Murphy can get the job done another year while they focus on QB, OL, safety and DE.

  6. S Says:

Decision to cut Josh was made before OC was hired

That’s why Lovie didn’t hire Trestman because he already decided to cut Josh, no Josh no need for Treastman

    Fact

  7. WS99 Says:

We can’t cut vjax. Glennon needs him and the rook will definitely need him. Do the right thing bucs.

  8. biff barker Says:

Cut VJax? Why? Releasing McCown just freed up $5M of cap room.

Draft and develop another WR for next year.

  9. Jack Says:

His philosophy is to prepare the team for: the short game, the 3-step, 5-step and the 7-step drop plays. Then, in the game they can adjust to the defense. For example, if the SE is running a vertical go route and can’t get clear of the coverage, he will curl up and the QB knows to look for this.

The bottom-line is he prepares his team for every possibility, so they can adjust during the game.

He is a dream coach for us…that is all 🙂

It’s a moot point Joe. Koetter could never endorse McCown after last year’s performance.

Not insulting anyone. I just never take anything that ANY coach says in an interview seriously. They don’t call it Coach Speak for nothing. I look at their past.

Going all the way back to Boston College, Koetter has always had a drop back passer. The closest to a spread guy was Blaine Gabbert. But, he clearly wasn’t a runner. The rest were pro-style QBs, every single one of them. Will he suddenly change his M.O.? Maybe, but, history doesn’t show it.

    **************
As a good OC should. Anyone that tries to ram a square peg into a round hole shouldn’t be a coordinator.

  14. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

LOOK OUT, HERE COMES THE DRAFT. AND THE BUC’S SELECT MARCUS MARIOTA ,,,YYYYYYAAAAA !!!!!!! THIS IS TO ALL YOU WINSTON LIKERS………………

  15. TBSwarm Says:

I would love to see MG be the QB for a year while MM sits on the bench and learns.

Nor a head coach either. But we have one!

  17. buc4lyfe Says:

Being an offensive coordinator is nothing like being a head coach……dirk is right where he fits in and it’s not coach speak just to say something, he has more credibility than any play calling coach we’ve had since jon gruden

  18. LargoBuc Says:

Torey Smith is an UFA. Imagine his speed to compliment the size of Evans and Vjax. That would be one hell of a trio.

  19. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

I will make voodoo dolls of the glazier boys and light if they cut Vjax. Exact replicas…

I think Mike Evans has a monster year this year.

Gotta disagree with Mr. Nice Guy. We need a better slot receiver and return man. Rainey and Murphy are great guys to be able to call on if needed, but we need some talent upgrade at slot and return. I wish Randal Cobb but that will never happen. Maybe they can find one in the draft or Herron MAGICALLY comes to life next season.
