Jameis Watch: Lovie Leans Jameis?

February 11th, 2015

jameis 1215Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Well, here is very intriguing news from a good source who covers the Bucs. In a post this morning on his ESPN.com Bucs blog, Bucs beat writer Pat Yasinskas had his ear to the rail and heard Bucs coach Lovie Smith is leaning toward drafting Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

Here are the details:

I’ve heard that coach Lovie Smith prefers Winston over Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. From what I have gathered, Smith chose Dirk Koetter as his offensive coordinator over Marc Trestman. The logic was simple. Although Smith and Trestman had similar philosophies about how to run an offense, they disagreed on the quarterbacks. Trestman preferred Mariota.

Smith favors Winston and Smith is the boss. There is lots of logic behind Smith’s preference.

Needless to say, this news has really settled Joe’s blood pressure. If a college quarterback has played so well that it has won over a defense-first coach like Lovie, then that should tell folks something.

Yasinskas is as plugged in as anyone on the Bucs beat. Not only are his team sources sound, he has the massive resources, contacts and sources who work for the four-letter.

Agree Joe. Guess I can put down my scotch and actually have coffee for breakfast. Wheeeew!

  2. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    I hope it’s true.

But, we are going to hear all sorts of stories in the next few months re: all the top guys. And, there will be all sorts of slanderous statements in the comments from a select few on here about Jameis. “Rapist dur dur dur”

None of it matters. It’s all noise. I need a time machine.

  3. Joe Says:

    I need a time machine.

    LOL! True.

  4. Trey Says:

Joe, Trestman didn’t get hired because he didn’t want to come to TB. You reported this during the OC search. Smells like smoke to me.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Even if true…..”leans” at this point means very little…..much to come with due diligence…

This wouldn’t surprise me because Lovie, if forced to take a QB would likely take one that would be more “NFL ready”…..Lovie needs to win immediately…

Like yesterday’s story….we may get another one tomorrow….”False”

  6. Biff Barker Says:

Lovie speak is rather difficult to decipher! I thought the Cannon was the QOF but McCown gave us our best chance to win?

“It’s not about the future, but everything is about the future”

  7. Biff Barker Says:

    Trey Says:

    More smoke than Tanard’s couch!

And yes, I’m still surprised Koetter came here.

  8. buccinfan Says:

So a qb guru coach. Preferred mariota over winston and a defensive coach turns his ear… Hmm yea lovie gots his hands on this. In lovie we trust right?

  9. LutzBuczFan Says:

Lovie could be assembling the best offense in Bucs history.

  10. milenko Says:

Didn’t you post last year Joe that Lovie was leaning towards his Texas connection, to draft JF? I won’t believe anything leaked, rumored or leaning towards any player until draft day, or Free Agnecy signing. #SorryNotSorry

  11. Barry Says:

Rumors are hot and heavey the Browns want Mariota. Bad.

  12. buddha Says:

Four teams are rumored to want to trade up to get Mariota. No teams are rumored to want to trade up to get Winston. What does that tell you. When the dust settles, Winston will go in the middle of the first round and Mariota will be a Buccaneer. Patience is a virtue.

  13. rayjay1122 Says:

I agree with TBBF. There is still plenty of evaluation to do. I am more than happy to hear this news, however this is the season of smoke screens. There will be a ton of reports between now and the draft. Just don’t want to get my hopes up only to be disappointed.

  14. Barry Says:

Just think you all could have 2 first round picks, 2,3,or 4 and a player(s). Perhaps Manziel. that would make everyone, including Joe, happy, right?

  15. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Hey…Joe there are plenty of other offseason Buc stories you could write about….this has gotten very old and boring

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So……we can absolutely take this to mean that the Bucs are “leaning” toward drafting a QB…..otherwise….why would Trestmans’s preference for Mariota make any difference.

By the way…I have searched and I am unable to find any comments from Trestman regarding Mariota…..he is now the OC at Baltimore & Flaco….not exactly a Mariota clone.

  17. Barry Says:

What’s the team trying to move up to get #TheCreepyCrab? That’s right, No team.

  18. knuckledragger Says:

At this time of year you take what you hear, cut it in half, believe a fourth of that and Then you might be half right.

  19. Barry Says:

There are many teams with high interest in Glennon. Joe, am I correct on this?

  20. bucs4lyfe Says:

if lovie is smart he is drafting Winston, he doesn’t have the luxury of drafting a project because he wouldn’t last long enough

  21. SuperBuc Says:

Sounds like Lovie is trying to drive up the value of that pick. The Bucs are picking #1 so they don’t have to put out any smokescreens unless they are trying to get teams interested in that #1 pick
Also, tons of stories floating around about lots of teams wanting to trade up to get Mariota, but I haven’t seen one yet that has teams wanting to come up for Winston. Gee, wonder why?

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ buddha

The Jets are rumored to want Winston….but they don’t want to trade up to #1…..they hope he drops to #6…..or #2, then they would perhaps be interested in a trade with Tenn.
That is the only team that has shown interest in Winston to my knowledge.

  23. WS99 Says:

So basically L&L are in a full court press trying to spin yesterday’s report from Florio. Lovie lies I think that’s fair to say, better yet he likes to cloak everything. I’m bored with him already. Thankfully the combine starts next week.

  24. Wausa Says:

THis is a very easy decision. I know people and ESPN want fans to think there is some enormous drama behind the whole thing. Jameis is the best prospect in the last 10 years at the QB position outside of Andrew Luck.

  25. Nick Says:

    @JoeJoes Fungi Nails

A local reporter breaking news that the HC has a preference on Winston/Mariota is boring?

Would you prefer “Middle Linebacker Watch” or “Right Guard Watch”?

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Joe….

A good time for another Lovie Confidence Poll….

The hiring of Koetter & Bajakian…..and now the “leaning” toward Winston should send Lovie’s confidence skyrocketing!!!

I look for all of the Lovie haters to start to soften if he supports their choice for QB

  27. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Ho hum.

  28. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

A good time for another Winston/Mariota poll as well Joe.

  29. bucsfan4lyf Says:

SMOKE SCREEN SEASON IN FULL EFFECT!

    #MariotaorBUST

  30. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

@ Nick…that is pure rumor based on speculation…just as we do here.

  31. Tiny Tim Says:

You know why no team is rumored to trade up for Winston? Its because they know they have no chance at him. Did you hear any team trying to trade up for Luck? No because they had no chance so they had to settle for RG3 just like all the other teams have to settle for Mariotta. Get a clue people.

  32. 87 Blows Jameis Says:

Nobody, knows what the pick is except L&L and the Glazer family. And Joe stop pulling information off of Bleacher Report..Stop being so one sided JOE!!

  33. knucknbuc Says:

    @joe

This team never reveals anything. Lovie never reveals anything. You know that. This all but guarantees mariota is the guy. Nervous yet joe?

  34. Nick Says:

    @JoeJoes Fungi Nails

So in the absence of rumors you’d prefer what? Gerald McCoy vacation updates.. Lavonte David summer grilling tips?

  35. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Erik with CleanAthletics.com…you need to start shopping soon.

  36. Nick Says:

    @87 Blows Jameis

Yasinskas works for ESPN and Gil Arcia, also confirming, works for The Bay Cave and Scout.com.

    Try again.

  37. budnbeers Says:

Please please, please, for once let good fortune come the Bucs way. I want the Bucs to be revelent again. Draft Jameis.

  38. Eric Says:

This is very good news. From a great source.

I can’t fathom that Lovie Smith would not like Jameis if he speaks to people who know him vs. the various hit pieces(i.e. witch hunts).

And I am sure 55 has filled him in, who I imagine Lovie respects as much as any person in pro football – and rightfully so.

Not to mention the film which shows him making NFL quality throws all over the field on the biggest stages college football can offer.

Absent a train wreck at the combine welcome to Tampa Mr. Winston.

  39. MadMax Says:

So yesterday he wanted to trade down, today he’s leaning Winston…..Im Lovei-ing the smokescreens….could work a trade back one spot and still land Williams! And dont think the Titans DO NOT want one of these QB’s!

Guess we’ll find out, but I already know what I think should and probably will be done.

  40. JSmalls Says:

There are no trade rumors for Winston for the same reason there were no trade rumor for Luck – It’s a lock folks! Teams know Tennessee is a viable trade partner because teams know the Titans would be settling with Mariota. If Mariota slips to the Jets it could get interesting in Philly.

  41. pick6 Says:

for the next 3 months a report could mean exactly what it says, or it could mean the subject of the report believes the exact opposite of what it says. i don’t eny those reporting on the NFL this time of year, they’re basically professionally obligated to report a bunch of things that their sources inside of NFL teams mostly know are not true.

  42. SmokeScreen2015 Says:

So wait a minute we were to believe that Lovie wanted to trade the pick and now a day later we are to believe he wants Jameis. So @Joe which is it do you believe your guy Florio or do you believe Pat you can’t keep flip flopping either you believe Lovie or all this is just hot smoke up the a$$…

  43. Nybucsfan Says:

I don’t think lovie likes the rapist

  44. Luther Says:

April 30th at approximately 8:15, I will probably have a heart attack after finally learning “The NFL Draft Decision”.

Draft Winston and enjoy the ride.

  45. Eric Says:

Florio’s revelation was debunked by Rick Stroud.

Pat and Rick have ears at OBP, unlike Florio.

  46. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

When they take Winston. There are about 5 fans that need to banish themselves from JBF and the Bucs.

They know who they are and they will have no RIGHT to cheer for him on Sundays.

Thankfully I’ll still be here to remind them. 🙂

  47. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

This is exciting, but I’m not going to pay much attention to the rumor mill until after the combine. If Jameis throws and if rumors start coming out that he impressed during interviews (which I fully expect) then I’ll really start getting excited.

87, congrats on your new Jameis jersey. I wonder if Erik should just go ahead and order it now to avoid the rush

  48. 87 Blows Jameis Says:

No, you try again Nick!! Nick blows Jameis..

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Tiny Tim

You can see the considerable controversy surrounding Winston……even with the Bucs on the clock…..can you even imagine a team actually trading up to get him…..and the incredible outcry from their fanbase.

At this stage of the process…..consideration of Winston is certainly reasonable……offering to trade up is insane….

Mariota is a different story…..teams like Cleveland & Phil are not intimidated by spread offense QBs….and Mariota had no apparent character issues.

  50. Nick Says:

Clever. You should submit a writing sample to Sports Illustrated. Your pith and imagery are world class. It’s a mixture of Gonzo journalism and Tolkien-esque storytelling with a hint of drunken frat boy. Godspeed.

  51. bucsfan4lyf Says:

IMO, Trestman wanted Winston and Lovie wants Mariota, that’s why he brought Koetter to be the OC and hired a QB coach that knows the spread.

Its 2015 people, NFL is evolving. Lovie said it himself; he wants a smart, athletic QB that’s a natural leader on and off the field, AKA NOT WINSTON

  52. Jameisisnotarapist Says:

    Welcome to Tampa Jameis Winston.

  53. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Teams will try to trade up with the Titans for Mariota after Winston is selected by the Bucs. That’s my current prediction. If the Titans don’t find a trade partner they will take Mariota.

If the Titans don’t take Mariota, then I can see Mariota slipping to #6 with the Jets.

I hate waiting for the draft to get here. It’s worse than watching paint dry.

JBF is a great site to wait it out though!

  54. BrianDorry55 Says:

“Why aren’t any teams trying to trade up to get Winston?”

    Well….a few reasons…

Because most people probably already know that the Bucs are going to take Winston…and it’s not possible to get in front of the Bucs…so they’re more likely targeting a trade down to the 2nd or 3rd spot to get Mariota before the Jets can get him…

ALSO….You can’t say “THIS IS SMOKE” but then also put stock in the stories that all of these teams want to trade up to get Mariota…maybe they actually want Winston and they’re trying to boost Mariota’s stock.

  55. Chef Paul Says:

Florio works for NBC. If you just consider NBC wrong on every thing they say, you will right more than you will be wrong.

  56. Rrsrq Says:

Lovie, u can do this, make it happen, of course between now and the draft, there will be at least ten more stories about preference, trades, free agency as well as Brian Wiliams like lies

  57. rayjay1122 Says:

OK. I am self admitted not to be a college versus NFL rules guru, so I have a question. It seemed like Oregon used a ultra high tempo spread offense attack. Doesn’t the NFL force the offense to give the defense a moment to get set before allowing the offense to snap the ball? If that is the case, even with a pro adaptation of a spread offense would not be as effective as the college version. I like Mariota but I think at the NFL level that the speed of the NFL defenses along with the pace control placed on the offense may easily neutralize Mariota’s skill set.

  58. Barry Says:

If Winston is drafted by the Bucs, wasting a 1st round pick, do you think he’ll make the pro bowl first or go to Orient Road jail first? Serious question.

  59. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

So if someone says the Bucs are interested in Mariota, it’s just smoke and mirrors. But when someone says they are interested in Winston, you guys get a bulge in the pants??

    IT’S SMOKE SEASON PEOPLE!!

  60. Supersam Says:

Hahaha and next week it’ll be Lovie is leaning Mariota! You guys will believe anything. I call chicken spit. Theres no way anyone can know for sure at this point, and plus Jason Licht has final say over who we draft, Lovie has final say over the final 53 man roster. So technically matters most where Jason licht is leaning, not Lovie. It’s to early to say either way, I think the its Mariota the whole way just purely by looking at our coaching hires.

  61. Tiny Tim Says:

    @tampabaybucfan

I am sure there are some teams that may have reservations for trading up for Winston due to off the field issues as I am sure Winston may not be on some teams board. You make a great point, but I also believe there are teams that feel they have no chance to move up to get him because in their mind/evaluations, he is a lock for number #1.

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

Ever since Joe sent you to JBF purgatory “awaiting modereation” you have been kissing up to Joe on a daily basis…..this started before “Jameis Watch”…..just thought I’d let you know that this hasn’t gone unnoticed…
You are still a good guy…..now a bit OC…but good guy none the less…

  63. Skyline Crew Says:

Any talk of taking Winston is just a smoke screen. Nothing to see here.

  64. bucrightoff Says:

It is smokeseason, but the Browns wanting Mariota is probably not smoke. They view that as the quick cleanse to the Manziel debacle. So if the Bronws can be had for the RGIII-level package the trade must be made. The Browns could give us the #1 pick next year since they’re the Browns.

  65. rayjay1122 Says:

I like Winston best between the two at the moment but I am open minded about it just as long as we get a long term upgrade at the QB position. Hell, at this point I would even be OK with going DL 1st and using rounds 2 through 4 on OL if we signed Bradford hypothetically speaking. Have to upgrade MLB also either in free agency or the draft.

  66. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Tiny Tim

Here is the link for the NY Jets/Winston trade-up rumor.

It is far too early for teams to be set, in particular the Bucs……why should they….they have the first pick…..they could wait untill 14 minutes into their time on the clock.
Other teams will want to explore FA….resignings/restructuring of their QBs, the Combine & team visits before formulating a choice.
“Leaning”……sure…..but that means very little…..I could be “leaning” towards buying a new car and all of the sudden….a great deal on a used model pops up!!!

  67. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

LOL TBBF…I don’t need to kiss up to Joe.

All I need to do is not talk about his homeboy on the radio!

Me and Joe are like two peas in a pod, peaches and cream, coffee and cream. 🙂

  68. bucsQcCity Says:

    Dungy wants Mariota
    Brooks wants Winston

Lovie? No idea but considering that Winston may be the pick, it’s just a smart decision to wait before declaring ourselves. We are entering in the period where writers and journalists have nothing to do but dig dirt on these college players. Let’s see if any can find anything relevant on Winston.

  69. SuperBuc Says:

As said before, if the Bucs know for sure that they are staying at #1 and know exacly who they are taking, then there is no reason to float any smokescreens, not needed.
However, if they are going to shop the pick then they will have to keep the other teams guessing
Also, other teams know that it is just way too big of a risk to offer the premium picks needed to move up to get Winston with all of his red flags and interceptions

    —————————————-
Good question, but Kelly’s version has been successful and it’s rumored that he doesn’t have the QB he wants.

What I see is the NFL speed negating select plays in the Oregon/Ohio State scheme but not all.

Figure this, we’ve had the wildcat, pistol, read option etc. all come and go. Mostly. Some elements will remain if they are successful. Same goes for defenses, 3-4, 4-3, C2. All schemes change back and forth and adapt too.

Good teams understand strengths and weaknesses and attack them. Case in point, In the SB, Brady rarely went deep and chewed up a banged up Seattle secondary.

But in the grand QB debate/debacle? of 2015, what is unknown is what Koetter really wants to do. Lovie coveted McCowns speed and escape ability over Glennon’s right? So would that imply Mariotta?

    Whodafugknoes?

  72. Supersam Says:

In fact there is a article up right now at Bucsnation.com about how the Bucs love Mariota way more than any other team in the NFL!! It’s Feburary, I won’t believe spit until the draft card is handed in. One scenario I could really see happening though is the Browns giving us there 2 first rounds picks plus Manziel to move up and draft Mariota. Manziel reunited with Evans hmmmmm interesting

  73. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 87

    You & Joe…..more like sugar & syrup!!!

Take notice of how I’m not all giddy about what Yasinskas said about Winston.

  81. SOEbuc Says:

Okay, switch me back to Mariotta again. Just got done watching highlights on both of them and I noticed about Jameis that even though he has arm strength and accuracy, on almost every throw his receivers either have to totally turn around or completely stop in stride. AND THAT AINT GONNA FLY AGAINST NFL SECONDARIES. I am assuming this and his baseball windup are the main reasons for so many pics. On the other hand with MM highlights, he’s got a lot of nice touch on a lot of downfield passes (No not just screens and maybe not all 50 yard bombs like JW) but i feel touch is an important factor in making this decision. Along with smarts, mobility, and less off field worries, I’m starting to remember why I liked MM so much when this all started. Man all you Noles fans really messed my head up

  82. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ tampabaybucfan

I am not sure if you are understanding what I am trying to say. To say it is too early for evaluations on some players to be complete, I would have to disagree. Again Luck was a lock for #1. Winston by many is considered the best QB prospect in the last 10 years only second to Luck. So barring him totally embarrassing himself at pro days, individual workouts/interviews he too may be a lock to many GMs right now if all things check out. So again, the notion to move up to draft him may be far fetched to some organizations.

  83. Skyline Crew Says:

If they took Manziel in a trade I think that would be the one thing on this earth that could get me to leave the Bucs.

  84. Tiny Tim Says:

    @SOEBuc,

I am not sure what film you are watching but your analysis is complete different from all of the experts who are paid to evaluate players, but I will let that be you own little secret. Be scared of his off the field issues and you have that right, but to trying and discredit his tape is laughable. The only reason there is a debate between the two Qbs is because of Winston “character” issues.

  85. Skyline Crew Says:

    Wrong Tiny Tim

Winston has on field issues as well.

“Winston’s throwing mechanics are sloppy. And that’s putting it nicely. His feet are sloppy which causes his entire lower body to be sloppy and also his entire upper body. He gets away with this because he has such a strong arm and is still consistently accurate. With some discipline in his mechanics, Winston could become an even better thrower and more consistently accurate with the football. When Winston misses he misses high, especially to his right. He has a tendency to drop his throwing elbow when throwing to his right and causes a lot of his balls to sail because his hand dips below the football at the release instead of staying “on top” of it. This happens less when he throws to the left because the motion of throwing to the left naturally slots his elbow in the right position and he’s less likely to let it sail.
Under pressure, Winston’s mechanics get even sloppier. He does a good job of moving within the pocket but it takes considerable effort to move his big frame around and he’s not as precise or subtle in his movements as he should be. Winston shows a strong ability to handle edge pressure, it’s just the pressure up the middle that tends to cause his decision making to implode.” –NFL Philosophy

  86. flmike Says:

Issue is, the moron, excuse me, Lovie wouldn’t know a pro-style offense if it bit him on the sack….

  87. Skyline Crew Says:

“Winston can and often reads through a full progression and does so with good efficiency. He can determine his first read and come off it quickly if the defense shifts. He’s always aware of where his receivers should be and does a good job of moving his feet with his eyes so that he can pull the trigger and deliver the ball with quickness and accuracy. Despite all of that, Winston actually has the same issue with underneath linebackers that Mariota has. Sometimes he’ll be so focused on the routes that his receivers are running that a linebacker from across the field can sneak under a throw. This is something he has to improve on.” –NFL Philosophy

  88. Skyline Crew Says:

“Most significantly, too many of Winston’s turnovers this season have been a direct result of his poor play, rather than something he could blame on a team. One of the recurring causes of Winston’s interceptions is his inability to recognize underneath coverage. Winston simply makes these plays that are inexplicable in terms of his thought process. He is an exceptionally smart quarterback from the pocket for the most part, but underneath defenders appear to lie in a blind spot for him. This is an element of his game that NFL defenses will attempt to highlight with flooded zone coverages and mixed coverages. It’s the kind of flaw that could prove fatal if it doesn’t improve significantly. ” –Rotoworld

  90. Skyline Crew Says:

    Eric Adelson, Yahoo Sports
Adelson seems to favor Winston over Mariota, though he questions whether either would be a good fit for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have the No. 1 pick. He calls both Winston and Mariota “system quarterbacks,” saying Winston could suffer without Jimbo Fisher coaching him (Bucs Coach Lovie Smith isn’t exactly a quarterback guru) and questioning whether Mariota could thrive solely as a pocket passer.

  91. Ernest T. Bass Says:

Fat Albert has been hired by the Bucs to translate when the Bucs interview Shameis at the combine!

  92. Skyline Crew Says:

Winston has the skills to be an NFL starting quarterback. He’s big – 6-foot-4, 230 – somewhat mobile, very difficult to tackle in the pocket or on the run, and capable of making some incredible plays. He’s very good at keeping his eye downfield under pressure.
His mechanics obviously need work, but they’ve improved across his college career. His throwing motion too often resembles the baseball pitcher he doubles as, and it needs to be shortened considerably or NFL defensive backs will have a field day. His 18 interceptions this season are notable.
Still, few, if any quarterbacks, enter the NFL as finished projects.
More concerning football-wise is his age and lack of experience. He turned 21 this week and has played just 28 games, throwing just 851 passes, often against overmatched competition. He was a starter for just two seasons and on campus just three (he redshirted his freshman year). –Dan Wetzel (Yahoo Sports)

  93. SOEbuc Says:

    @Tiny Tim

Ive watched a few on youtube and its what i see. Im not saying he’s not on target I’m just saying i don’t see the touch. And yes his motion and feet work need some help. he’s a freaking college quarterback no matter how “nfl ready” he is.

  94. lord cornelius Says:

My prediction is that Winston will impress in interviews and in work outs; and over time more people that are worried about his off the field issues; will publicly say they are not as worried. This will drive public perception to be more accepting of him as the #1 pick; and it will slowly become a lock by the time draft day comes.

I think Mariota will impress in interviews and probably have a solid pro day; but he won’t be able to do anything to answer questions about his ability to operate an NFL sytle offense; outside of showing understanding via film / board work. But he doesn’t have the tape of him executing it and making those kind of plays.

I could see the Titans making a trade back with the Browns or Eagles; at a semi discounted price; for them to take Mariota. Either that or another team with a high pick if the Titans decide to go with the DE. I don’t think he will fall out of the top 10.

The X factor I guess is that hunting ground movie; but i doubt NFL personnel will be swayed by a theatrical film that presents no new evidence or story that hasn’t been told for his case. They will have vetted him personally over this so I would assume it wouldn’t matter.

UCLA head coach Jim Mora, who has spoken very highly of Mariota in the past, took exception to Mayock’s comments. He came to Mariota’s defense on Tuesday during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, saying that he believes Mariota is a special player.

“I don’t agree with that,” Mora said. “And I would venture to say I’ve seen more of Marcus Mariota than Mike Mayock. And I respect Mike. If there is one voice out there that I’d listen to, it would be Mike because he does the work, he doesn’t poach off of other people’s information. He looks at the film, he’s active in calling coaches. But I don’t think that he’s a project. I think the guy is special, that’s just based upon playing him and evaluating and studying him for two years now.”

Mora went on to say that if he were in charge of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have the No. 1 pick in the draft, Mariota would be the easy pick.

“In my opinion he’s the best quarterback and the best player,” Mora said. “That’s my opinion based upon what I’ve seen, which is a lot of film of him. Anytime you start to go in depth in evaluating these players, you’re going to find holes. There is nobody that doesn’t have a weakness, a deficiency. But Marcus Mariota has such great character, he’s big, he’s fast, he’s strong, he can throw it. To me, he’s a sure thing.”

That’s the problem. You are talking about skill set. Skill set does not always equate to talent or the ability to actually play in the NFL. Terrelle Pryor has the skill set. Give me Brady over Kapernick every day of the week and twice on Superbowl Sundays. Plus you guys act like Winston is Mike Glennon in the pocket. You better go back and review the “tape.” You don’t have to run a 4.4 in order to be a mobile QB. 126. Hiceman Says:

I can’t wait for the Bucs to draft Winston, perfect fit, QB who is ready to start now, accurate pocket passer who goes thru his reads diligently, takes hits but is also mobile and hard to bring down, the kid has been in the limelight since he was 16, he has handled all the pressure unfazed, and don’t forgot, the kid doesn’t lose, maybe once in 3 years, yes, but that was not his fault, dropped passes, a missed FG and 2 red zone RB fumbles can be the reason for that. Mariota only has one thing in common with Winston being that he is mobile, that’s it. Suck it up haters this kid is the truth, and the better choice, and he will be the choice the Bucs are gonna make come draft day. Assign him chaperones a la Dez Bryant and he will be fine! Plenty of support here from FSU alum and elsewhere (including all FL schools, Noles Haters) once he is made our Franchise QB. I just hope he responds to all the critics and haters with a Crab-Walk TD dance after he waltzes into the end zone in a Bucs uni for the first time in Tampa. Deckerhoff knows the drill on the PA, just gotta say fire the cannons after it this time….

  129. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ SOEbuc

He!! no that’s not big boy enough. Look at every spread QB over the past 10 years. They all have 30+ Tds and around 7 ints even the great Tim Tebow. That offense is a system offense that does not prepare you for being an NFL QB. Go look at RG3 numbers when he won the Heisman (very similar) and look at the issues he is having in the NFL. Coming out of college he too had great character, leader, smart, mobility, strong arm. The overall “skill set” skyline talks about in Mariotta. RG3 sucks now because he was not prepared to play in the NFL because that gimmicky offense does not prepare you for success in the NFL. How many times did Gruden call him out during the season for having problems reading the field? That 40 td 4int has absolutely no bearing on what takes place in the NFL. Good try though.

  130. Buctebow Says:

Maybe all of the trade up talk about Mariota is because it would cost too much to trade up to #1 to get Winston. If they believe Winston is a sure fire lock as a pick for the Bucs, therefore the only option is Mariota for QB needy teams and the discussion revolves around what can reasonably happen.

From what I’ve seen on film I’ll take Mariota over Winston all day everyday. I don’t think having negative yards rushing is a mobile QB. He had 5 games this year (including Rose Bowl) where he had negative yards. Only 3 games did he get above 10 yds. That is not a mobile QB nor a scrambler. He won’t get you the 1st down if he has to on his legs. He isn’t a duel threat QB. He does one thing and one thing only, throw the ball. With his mechanics he is going to throw more than 18 ints a year in the NFL. I prefer a QB that can extend plays and move around when needed.

“We have a job to do, and that’s to develop players and win games at this level,” Meyer said.

To bolster his argument that superior talent can survive in any system, Herman mentioned Russell Wilson, Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III as examples of spread-formation quarterbacks who made it in the N.F.L.”

Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are taking over the league. There will be more like them. Hell, if Foles would have stayed healthy this year no telling how far the Eagles go with that offense. It is the way it is.

  144. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    We will see, won’t we?

  145. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Rodgers ran for 346 yards at Cal in two years. Winston for 286 in two years. Winston also took a lot of sacks contributing to his yards this year. They both can move and pick up a first down. I don’t put either of them in a Cam, Kaep, RGIII category, i.e. Spread Option.

  146. Skyline Crew Says:

Wilson runs a spread option in Seattle. It works. All the big time teams are going to a spread offense. Just look at the playoffs man. Majority of snaps were from shotgun. It will be ok. Mariota can read defenses. Mariota can stand in the pocket. Mariota can run. Mariota can throw. Your only knock on him is that he ran a spread offense in Oregon. That isn’t good enough. Maybe for you it is, but for the rest of us it isn’t. Unless you are an FSU Homer and anybody other than an FSU QB is wrong.

  147. SOEbuc Says:

Im excited for whoever the pick is cus I know the bucs are gonna put in their work looking into these guys and I’m a MGM member so a nice trade deal doesn’t hurt me soo much either

  148. Skyline Crew Says:

Interesting you blame sacks on Winston’s 65 yards this year, yet he took 10 more sacks last year and had 219 yards rushing. So he either gets more yards the more he gets sacked or he wasn’t mobile this year and the all-star cast from last year attributed to his inflated numbers. This year was more of a look at what he can do and it wasn’t that impressive.

  149. Skyline Crew Says:

Just prepare yourself for four possibilities and you will be just fine come draft day. Mariota, Williams, Winston, Trade down.

  150. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Spread option(also know as a read option) is different than just a spread offense.

When are you going to acknowledge that?

We will see what the Bucs think on April 30th, and further, we will see who is the more successful QB in the NFL in roughly 3-4 years.

you have no clue what you are talking about. Seattle does not run the spread. They have the read option as a package within the playbook. Their playbook is the pound attack with beast mode. They only call for Wilson to run maybe twice a game. The other 2-3 times he runs its because the play breaks down. FYI….Wilson already knew how to read a defense and perform in a pro style offense before he made it to the NFL.

  163. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ skyline
You can also contribute the sacks Winston took to the porous offensive line he played behind for 2/3 of the season. Oh and he had a bad ankle for 6 games. You think that hindered his mobility just a little? Give him credit for standing in that pocket and continuing to deliver NFL throws on every play as opposed to the two a game of mariotta.

  164. White Tiger Says:

Yes Pickgrin. Some of us got an eyeful of Fameis a couple of times this past season – well, even before the season. That clip of him standing on the table yelling/singing obscenities at young college girls was absolutely priceless. Sometimes you can slow it down and see some of the gestures he was using while shouting those obscenities at young college minors…we know he was just letting off some steam after his RAPE allegation(s)…

Then, again, I watched him play Clemson (thinking he may be a candidate for the Bucs this year, I paid some early attention to him). I watched a talented but undisciplined athlete display poor mechanics and a slow release while overcoming inferior opposition, late. His coach even asked him to let him call some plays…or at least, he asked Fameis to run some of the plays the coach had called…in order to get them out of the HOLE Fameis put them in.

And once more, I watched Fameis get sucked into making poor decisions by a defense that was – this time – faster and more talented than any Fameis had previously faced…meanwhile the other QB seemed to have no problem following his coaches gameplan, and taking those turnovers Fameis kept providing…I watched that undisciplined thing Fameis does (a LOT) when his team is behind – go off script and do whatever Fameis wants – until he was so far behind the coach had to THREATEN him with BENCHING (in a PLAYOFF game)…just to get the kid to settle down long enough to stop embarrassing himself and his team.

The other QB had no problem destroying Fameis’ teams defense – capitalizing on Fameis’ mistakes, and generally calling the only offense he was allowed to run in Oregon. While dismantling FSU, offensively and defensively.

In Oregon’s loss to my Buckeye’s (which I admit to paying a bit more attention to, because in my mind, that silly Fameis argument had been put to bed…) ..and even in defeat, I watched Marriota fight back (get close), but ultimately lose to the more superior team. He played within the defense, made all the correct throws, ran without question or fear, and was never once threatened with benching.

Then I went back and watched BOTH players film clips on throws of 20 yds, 30 yds., and 40 yds…I watched the ball explode off of Marriota’s hand – his release is lightning fast (at least compared to Fameis laborious Byron Leftwich-esque baseball/windmill wind-up…

I made my choice based on what I saw…not based on who my favorite college team’s QB was…

  165. Bamabuc Says:

He sometimes doesn’t sense pressure in the pocket and takes unnecessary sacks. I posted what other analysts think about his throwing mechanics. Are they flawed? Yes. Are they fixable? Yes. To hear FSU homers talk about Winston is he the best QB to ever come out of college. Some have even said he is better than Luck. I’m just pointing out that Winston isn’t perfect and has flaws. Some of you only think people want Mariota over Winston because of off field issues. I’m pointing out I prefer Mariota over Winston because of on field play.

Spread option(also know as a read option) is different than just a spread offense.

When are you going to acknowledge that?

We will see what the Bucs think on April 30th, and further, we will see who is the more successful QB in the NFL in roughly 3-4 years.

We can debate now, or we can see who’s right a few years down the road. But, you are no more right than I am.

Spread Option is the base of any spread formation. Just because he does a read option here or a bootleg there doesn’t mean anything. He also runs empty backfields sometimes.

We can both have opinions that is fine. Neither is right until years from now when all is said and done. Both could be a bust for all we know. However, right now at this point. I prefer Mariota over Winston.

  171. Skyline Crew Says:

    Greg Cosell on the situation:

“I like Winston more than Mariota, but having said that, I do think Winston has some concerns,” Cosell said. “He’s a very deliberate player, I think he would have to speed up everything he does. I’m always concerned with deliberate players that there’ll be bodies around them far too much and then they hurry. So I think he needs to speed up his game, but he does throw with the natural anticipation although he can be a bit reckless.”

“Mariota is a much better athlete, he’s a more quick-twitch kid. But it’s what you don’t see on film with Mariota that makes him a projection, and that’s a function of the offense in which he plays, which of course is not his fault, but you just don’t see it on film.”

Teams are trying to trade up for Mariota because they know Winston is off the board. Teams were trying to trade up to get RG3 because Andrew Luck was off the board!

  173. Skyline Crew Says:

Jets want to trade with Titans for Winston. Everybody else wants to trade with the Bucs for Mariota.

Mariota is injury prone….even in college so far.(look it up)

RGIII, Cam, and Vick are injury prone in the pros.

The Bucs have no need for an injury prone QB. That includes you Nick Foles!

Four teams are rumored to want to trade up to get Mariota. No teams are rumored to want to trade up to get Winston. What does that tell you. When the dust settles, Winston will go in the middle of the first round and Mariota will be a Buccaneer. Patience is a virtue.

Why would you disgrace such a good name?

  178. Gino Says:

I like what Buddha said. BTW, it appears that Joe is in bed with Winston. Hope Joe doesn’t have kid sisters. I wouldn’t have Winston play in a touch football game. Character is king. Just because he’s a bad boy doesn’t mean he’s good. Check out the link below. It shows Marcus better than Jameis in every category.

Here’s what I’d do for a halftime extravaganza: Throw Manziel, Rice, Sapp and Winston inside a room. Throw in an inflatable doll, turn out the lights and throw away the key. I wouldn’t look back into the room in a thousand years.

    @ skyline

Trust me, I know a QB does not have to run to play in a spread offense. The fact you believe Wilson plays in a spread tells me you have no idea what the he!! you are talking about.

The Seahawks running a spread? Really? That’s What some are calling it. Okkkaayy.
