Dietrich-Smith: Glennon Can Win Starting Job From Rookie

February 18th, 2015

Cue the Mike Glennon Mob!

Evan Dietrich-Smith did some big talking on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday night. When he wasn’t delivering silly mixed messages, the Bucs’ starting center was standing tall in Mike Glennon’s corner.

Sure, Dietrich-Smith knows the Bucs are in line to draft a potential franchise-saving quarterback, but he’s not sold No. 8 will be shoved aside.

“Mike will still be pushing these guys for a starting job. I mean it’s nothing to say that even if we do take a quarterback with the first pick, that the guy’s going to come out and start over Mike,” Dietrich-Smith said. “Because I think Mike, you know, has the ability to be a starting quarterback in this league.

“You know, he has great arm strength. He has a lot of tangibles that you would like in a quarterback.

“He’s very smart. You know, he practices very hard. He studies very hard. You know, he had Josh [McCown] there all last year teaching him how to be a pro about it.

“I’m one of the first guys kind of in the building, and Mike always beats me there every morning. So he’s very dedicated and I think he’s taking it very serious about coming in this next season prepared to compete for that job.”

Yes, Joe’s heard this all before. Glennon’s got a “cannon.” Glennon’s brilliant. Glennon works like a ox. Glennon is Mike Vick in his prime. If Glennon is this good, then Joe hopes the Bucs can snag a third-round pick for him after they draft their quarterback of the future on April 30.

I wouldn’t put it past a Rookie to take Evan Dietrich-Smith’s job either.

  2. Robert 9 Says:

and just when I think EDS is a buffoon he goes and TOTALLY REDEEMS HIMSELF!

  3. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

He could have won it from “the veteran” last year…he did get a real chance for fear of embarrassing both Lovie and McCown

  4. mike n Says:

no one wins a starting job over the 1st overal pick unless there is injury.

    EXACTLY… Well said.

He needs to spend more time on his craft before pretending he knows QB… If Glennon starts the bucs will have another top 5 pick and lovie will back to the basement.

  6. Yarres Says:

Imagine if Lovie’s plan is to only play Mike Glennon for the first 3-4 games so Winston/Mariota can adjust to the NFL game BUT Glennon plays out of his mind for those 3-4 games. HAHAHAHAH. I really hope this happens. START GLENNON!!!! MGM in the house!

  7. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Message to EDS from MGM…no sh!t Sherlock

  8. SoonerinTampa Says:

I am not a member of the MGM, but I would certainly like to see how can perform with a REAL OC and a REAL offensive line.

  9. destro44 Says:

The best scenario for the Bucs is to draft MM or JW then start Glennon. Have him play at a Pro bowl level and take the Bucs to the playoffs. Next year we could get real compensation for Glennon in a trade and hand over a winning team to the draft pick with a year of the offense in place. This is best case, unlikely though.

  10. Chef Paul Says:

Even when he’s giving some one else props he has to pat himself on the back too. What a jack wagon

  11. Bannor Says:

I hope Dietrich-Smith is in the NFL substance abuse program because clearly he’s got a drug problem.

  12. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

For some reason, I feel like Glennon lacks ambition (once he’son the field regularly)…. In his 1st game last year, I honestly thought he might end up being our franchise QB after beating the Steelers. But, the more games he played, the more mediocre and timid he looked. He doesn’t have the fire to win consistently, IMO. If he brought the same fire and moxy from the Steelers game to every game, then he could be awesome.

  13. Chef Paul Says:

    Speaking of….
If EDS is first in the building kind of guy, what the hell is he doing there? Eating Donuts? Cuz he sure as hell ain’t practicing snapping the ball, unless he been practicing hiking worm burners cuz he has that down pat!!!

    Ouch. That hurt.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Glennon vs Winston in open competition will be the story of the pre-season. Can’t wait!

  16. Buc4lyfe Says:

erectile dysfunction syndrome has no idea what he’s talking about, if you cant beat out josh mccown you cant beat out a rookie. Blake Bortles could have beat out the Vet ahead of him with pr and fan push for him alone. we are a bad team like Jacksonville so there is no reason to play glennon. if you think we are a playoff team give him a try, if you think this team isn’t going anywhere for a few years theres no point investing games in mike glennon.

  17. WS99 Says:

It’s a hard knocks life for us …

  18. thegregwitul Says:

With McCown being released, unless the Bucs sign another veteran QB, I see Glennon sticking around this season, and that’s not a bad thing.

Think about it; wouldn’t you rather have Glennon on the cheap to push Mariota/Winston for the starting job with a real offensive coordinator in town? Worst case, Glennon is the backup QB. If he’s so much better than either of the rookie QBs and beats them out in camp, who wouldn’t want him to start the season? We are fans of the Bucs, right? I just want the best guy to play, and if that means Glennon is the guy to start the season while a rookie continues to learn the ropes, so be it. I want the team to win, period.

That doesn’t make sense. Why would you trade a QB that just took you to the playoffs? You ride it out until he can’t play anymore and then you bring the rookie in. However, if Glennon were to end up the franchise QB then I could say you trade the rookie for some good compensation and build around Glennon. That is if your scenario was to play out.

lol glennon end up being the franchise quarterback hahaha. if there was even a slight chance of that we wouldn’t be drafting a quarterback. the decision has already been made on glennon and you cant even get a 5th round pick for him, why would you trade a younger quarterback with more upside

  21. MTM Says:

EDS must be looking for his next gig behind the mic. EDS should concentrate on making sense with his statements first and foremost. McGlennon is a career back up. Get over it MGM. The picture in the article says it all Joe.

  22. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Buc4lyfe

If Glennon took us to the playoffs why would trade him? That doesn’t make any sense.

  23. Buc4lyfe Says:

IF he took us to the playoffs…..are you crazy really you should speak in reality, if we went to the playoffs it would have nothing to do with glennon so yea if we went to the playoffs I would trade him. the REALITY is like every other player on this team you have to base your evaluation of them on PRODUCTION not FEELINGS. don’t evaluate our quarterback and say oh the offensive line was bad or the receivers dropped all his passes. but you can look at him and say yea he ran out of bounce on multiple occasions because he was scared of getting him or not sacrificing to get the first down.

FOR ALL OF YOU WHO LIKE STATS LOOK AT THIS BELOW BECAUSE ACCORDING TO ESPN STATS JOSH MCCOWN AND MIKE GLENNON HAVE THE SAME COMPLETION PERCENTAGE 58.8% Josh freeman is like 57.7% and that was with the horrible 2013 season he had.

A franchise quarterback of the tampa bay buccaneers will not be someone who completes less than 60% of his passes I don’t care how much you like him or want to make excuses

the one of the first guys in the building and so and so always beats me there line is really getting tiring at this point. Its like the Bucs PR staff coaches this line in particular. Mix it up, do they we are all stupid?

Josh Freeman is one of the first guys in the building and one of the last to leave LOL

  25. Barry Says:

If you think #TheCreepyCrab has a better arm, can make better throws, reads defenses better, has better character,or is more intelligent than Mike Glennon then you surely have bad Intel. Don’t underestimate red flags (character). NFL network, Brunell I think. Paraphrasing, “Very few QBs ,if any, entering the NFL with characters questions have risen above that to become successful NFL QBs”. Remember #TheCreepyCrab has not 1, not 2, not 3, well you see where I’m going. When it comes to the QB position, Character means much. You people should know this. What is it you don’t understand?

  26. carlstoe Says:

Cannon will start and keep the job! He’s putting on muscle!

  27. Johnny Dejay Says:

Mr. Dietrich-Smith, please report to the locker room for a “random” drug test.

  28. salish_seamonster Says:

There were no mixed messages. Only in Joe’s imaginary land of conflict-seeking and sensationalizing could things have been interpreted as mixed messages.

  29. Ray Rice Says:

Someone needs to take his a$$$ to the locker room, turn off the lights, and bam!! BLANKET PARTY!!!

  30. Brandon Says:

According to Dietrich-Smith he has lots of, “tangibles”…. unfortunately he doesn’t have the INTANGIBLES to be a successful (WINS) starter in the league.

  31. LargoBuc Says:

I like Glennon but he lacks the consictency to be anything more than a backup. If he can take his game to the next level and beat out Winston or Mariota then so be it. May the best man win!
Although im sure the FIRST OVERALL PICK will be handed the starting job regardless. Hopefully not but I could see that happening.

  32. Architek Says:

Talk to me when Glennon will fight for 1 yard on 4th and 1.

  33. Buccfan37 Says:

    Go Glennon!

  34. BoJim Says:

Why do so many people want Glennon to fail? Real Bucs fans here. I think EDS has a little more experience in judging talent than we do. Just sayin.
