Votes For Rick Ross and J Boog, Slaps For Greg Schiano, And Hate For The Media

January 29th, 2015

BennettImagine what the NFL would be like if former Bucs defensive end and current Seahawks star Michael Bennett was running the league.

There’s no chance it would be nicknamed the No Fun League.

It’s also a safe bet Katy Perry wouldn’t be singing at halftime. In fact, Bennett was happy to offer Joe and a few other reporters at Super Bowl Media Day his artist choices for future seasons.

“If it’s my call, we’re going with Rick Ross, Lenny Kravitz, maybe The Green, the band from Hawaii that I like, J Boog,” Bennett said. “Mix it up a little bit with all types of music and let everybody have fun.”

Joe can only imagine the sour face on Roger Goodell’s mug at the thought of Rick Ross sharing his lyrics to America.

Bennett was loose with the media Tuesday in Phoenix, as is typical when he’s not playing for Greg Schiano. After sharing an analogy with a foreign journalist about having relations with Marilyn Monroe and Madonna, Bennett served up a detailed breakdown of how Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady compare to specific action heroes. Joe then asked Bennett to name two of the wackiest Schiano rules.

Bennett struggled to pin some down.

“The wackiest? Oh, man. There are so many,” Bennett said. “The way you had to dress, and the toes on the line. I thought that was really weird. I think sometimes in football, you just gotta let guys be themselves and you reap a lot of success if you do that.”

A female press member then asked Bennett why he thinks his teammate, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, won’t talk to the media.

Bennett didn’t hold back.

“Because the media is full of propaganda, and they make up lies and they like to stretch the truth. So I don’t blame him,” Bennett said. “Me, I don’t care. So it’s pretty cool.”

“Really?” said the annoyed-sounding reporter.

“I know, I’d hate to be you, but that’s just how it is,” Bennett said.

Bring this guy back! His contract is up soon, he is still young and effective. We need a do-over on this man.

  2. jb Says:

One of Schiano’s biggest mistakes. He let Bennett walk simply because he didn’t stand at attention and salute anytime Schiano walked by. Who cares if he’s the best, the ONLY DE you have? lol

this team needs to find the next bennett, the one that left is gone and if he ever did come back (why would he?) it would be like watching warrick dunn coming back in 2008….not the guy who left and not the guy who led the DL in seattle, just a guy who used to play well for us

  5. JFat Says:

Both Bennett brothers make excellent interviews. I try to catch a Martellus, aka Black Unicorn, interview whenever possible:

“I move like a butterfly and I sting like a bee. I’m a little bit of both. I like to be the butterfly because sometimes you’ve got to spread your wings. Ever try to catch a butterfly with your hands? You can’t do it. You need a net. They got butterfly nets made just for catching butterflies. Hopefully they don’t make a unicorn net just for catching unicorns out there, especially black ones.”

Ah, more kicking of dead dogs…..

As for this “media” thing, sadly, my former world of print media is on life support at best…..I’m sure there are very few “real” football writers left…..

Tampa Tribune doesn’t even cover the Gators in person any more

So I basically see this Super Bowl media stuff and wonder how the hell some of these people get credentials……

Back in the day, we had a Buccaneer player who gave everyone the silent treatment, his name was Jeris White, DB who came to the Bucs from Miami….wouldn’t talk to anyone, but I’d always ask him if he had anything to say and he’d politely shake his head……when the Bucs won that big playoff game over Philly on their way to the NFC Championship (if my memory serves me right and it doesn’t always)…..I went to him and said “Jeris, even you must have something to say…and he did,l gave me his first and only interview and shooed the other writers away when they tried to come in and poach my interview……pretty cool back then…..

Bennett showed no respect for the team. That picked him off the scrap heap and gave him a shot. It was common knowledge that he said he would let the a Bucs match any offer. There is no way the Buc’s wouldn’t have matched Seattles offer. The Seahawks probably knew his “match offer” with the Buc’s. Then made him a now or never offer. Good riddance the Seahawks could win without him and he only makes 5M per.

  9. RayRay1 Says:

Wasn’t there an issue with his shoulder and that was part of the reason Dom let him walk. Seems that was one of the reasons he only got a 1 year prove contract in Seattle. In retrospect an error but who knew for sure at the time.

  10. Ray Rice Says:

    @JOE

I recall you saying in an article that you were on board with letting him walk after you found out he had surgery last season in Seattle. You even applauded Dom for letting him walk at the “right” time. Now you bash the YUCS for doing so. Come on man!

  11. INDYbucsfan Says:

@poorglennon I’m pretty sure you have it wrong. From what I remember he really wanted to stay here and signed on with Seattle for something in the neighborhood of 2 million?

I remember Jeris White, not on the Bucs, but when he left the Bucs and played for the Redskins. I’m pretty sure he was with the team the year the Redskins won their first Super Bowl after the strike-shortened season of 1982. I think he even started, then I’m pretty sure he got cut the following offseason after the Redskins drafted some tiny little unknown CB from Texas A and I by the name of Darrell Green.

  13. OB Says:

If he can’t keep the team from getting up tight , I don’t know who can. His tour on the police bike is a classic.

I would sign him when his contract is over if we needed him and/or his price was right, but Washington doesn’t have state income tax either and the summers are gorgeous, but the winters are dreary except for the Seahawks now.

  14. HawaiianBuc Says:

As much as I blame Lovie for losing Revis, Schiano deserves even more blame for not signing Bennett. He would have signed for cheap (considering how much pass rushers make), but Schiano couldn’t deal with a guy with a strong personality and his own mind. Instead, we had to get the ghost, Michael Jackson, I mean Johnson. At least with Revis it was a money thing. We just flat let Bennett leave. So glad Schiano is gone.

Fox or should we say FIXED News comes to my mind.
uncle Billy used to say the media was worst the enemy.
Since you probably consider yourself a “Real American,” 87forjameis, do you know who that might be without going to Google.
Still, you have to look no further than Bennett’s quote about the Bucs a couple of days ago.
All you heard on the sound bite was, “I feel fortunate not to be a Buc.” But in the next sentence he praises the organization saying it is great.
But the first sentence is all you hear. This is why players dislike speaking to the media.
Tomexrington, Hugh Green was also famous for not speaking to the press. I think he was afraid people would start asking him about his failed child support payments.
As for the female “reporter” who acted annoyed, she is supposed to be a professional and not show emotion to answers that might upset her.
My guess she as the type of bimbo FIXED News like to hire so 87forjameis will watch thier news.

  17. Jonny 2.3 Says:

The fact that this criticism of Schiano is coming from Bennett is what is damning. Bennett is a guy who had to fight his way from scrap heap to being a starter to a productive starter. Bennett is a role model for every not-so-fortunate athletes out there that diligence can still take you long ways. One would expect a player like him and a coach who supposedly stands for great work ethic to be on good terms.

This is why Schiano is indefensible to me. Even Raheem had many players that believed they cost their coach his job. There was apathy on players’ part after Schiano was fired, if not for some “he had it coming” vibe. Yeah the up tight A-holes like to believe that Raheem was too easy on his players and Schiano too hard, which is why the reactions were in such way. But lets remember that Schiano’s rosters had seasoned veterans, professionals such as Revis who really did not sympathize with him.

I would love for the media to turn their back on these babies

  19. HawaiianBuc Says:

I watched the entire interview with Bennett. There’s a little more to the story. He was talking about the Brandon Browner comment about going after the injuries of his old teammates in Seattle (he’s now a Patriot). It’s become a big deal in the media, even though it’s common talk in the NFL. Bennett was saying that the media has blown this story up to the point where it has damaged friendships, over a complete non-story. He then followed it by saying that this is the reason why Lynch doesn’t talk to the media. He is absolutely 100% correct. By that same token, the media get paid too. They have a job to do, and without stories leading up to the big game, it’s just not the same.

RE: Schiano’s Rules – “The wackiest? Oh, man. There are so many,”

That’s a pretty telling insider statement regarding Schiano’s obsessive need to control EVERYTHING!. Who the hell likes to be micromanaged to a ridiculous degree? Nobody – that’s who. I bet it SUCKED to be a Bucs player for the 2 years Schiano was in charge. I got a sense that he lightened up a bit towards the end based on some things that were said – and perhaps the Glazers sat him down in the beginning and told him he had to be oober-strict in order to turn the loose climate that Rah had created around. But most of the NFL players who played for Schiano’s Bucs do not seem to have much positive to say about him now that he’s gone. I would love to sit down and have an extended chat w/ Ronde some day and get his unique perspective on Schiano.

  23. BringBucsBack Says:

I believe Bennett intimates why he didn’t return to the Bucs. He didn’t want to work for amateurs like Dumbanic and Shiano. I believe that Dumbanic tried, he just was not able to keep Bennett. His mind was made-up. He wanted out of this unprofessional organization. It’s hard to blame him!

  24. Uncle Albert Says:

Ughhh…… I’m so tired of hearing what coulda, shoulda, or woulda happened if we didn’t let this guy walk. Wake up people, the dude is gone so get over it. He has never been and will never be the second coming of Simeon Rice anyway. At best, he is a descent rusher, not stellar by any stretch.
