Tedford Says He Wasn’t Helping Marcus Arroyo

January 14th, 2015

Marcus Arroyo, the former (thankfully) Bucs playcaller.

That mess of a Buccaneers offense through most of the 2014 season, don’t think Jeff Tedford was meddling and trying to fix it.

First, per Tedford’s revelation today, Lovie Smith wasn’t interested in him playing a role. And Tedford told Joe he wasn’t serving up advice to Marcus Arroyo.

JoeBucsFan.com: Were there times that Marcus [Arroyo] reached out to you for advice or, ‘Hey, I might need some help here?’

Jeff Tedford: No. Not really. We would text back and forth. I would text him every week, ‘Good luck. Hope everything is going well.’ If something didn’t go well, you know, ‘Hang in there, and all that type of thing.’ You’re in no position, when you’re not in there in the room, you know, game-planning, to be giving advice. That was not something, I wasn’t going to second guess anything going on or anything like that. Marcus is a very good coach, and he had a very qualified coaching staff around him. You know how it goes with game-planning, I mean, the offensive line coach typically takes care of the run game and some of the protections. He had a very competent staff around him. And Marcus is a very, very good coach. [My health situation] was untimely and unfortunate.

While it’s hard for Joe to believe Tedford didn’t offer some helpful hints to his close friend Arroyo, it’s not hard to believe Tedford had no answers on how to repair the Bucs offense.

The Tampa Bay offense looked almost nothing like it did when Tedford last was on the sidelines, a solid preseason offensive effort against the stout first-team Buffalo defense.

How the hell does Warhop still have a job??

  2. Mr. T Says:

Well it’s all water under the bridge now. We have the no. 1 pick and a good OC in place, let’s see what they do in FA and the draft. Best wishes to Tedford for success in Canada.

  3. Cascade Says:

Tony Sparano will be free once the Raiders hire Del Rio. Maybe Warhop is gone if Lovie can get Sparano this time.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

This just keeps getting worse and worse. Either Lovie is an idiot or he tanked the whole season. And people think I’m crazy for thinking Lovie never wanted to win from the get go when he immediately handed the job to McCown.

How did you respond to that joe? Hope you didn’t spit your coffee onto your monitor.

tedford has shown nothing but class

lovie has shown nothing but a$$

  7. LargoBuc Says:

Warhop sucks! And I dont use that term lightly. Its not like we brought in a bunch of CFL castoffs to play oline. Warhop failed miserably. Maybe worse than any coach on the staff. Arroyo on the other hand should get a little more respect. He got thrown into an impossible situation and toughed it out. While he has no business being our OC next season im fine if Dirk keeps him as qb coach. But Warhop? Get out!

“Marcus is a very very good coach.” Huh? Did i miss something here?

That’ nothing Joe, lovie says that he wasn’t helping the Bucs!

    Has MM declared yet?

Good job in getting some quotes from Tedford Joe. Helps shed a bit more light on what was a big question mark surrounding the Tedford situation and why he didn’t return.

As I said in the previous post – We are better off with an experienced NFL OC in Koetter and the #1 pick with choice of potential franchise QBs than anywhere Tedford could have led us….

  13. ufcguy Says:

    Fire lovie

  14. Pickgrin Says:

I really hope that Lovie upgrades both the QB coach and OL coach positions very soon. Its making me nervous that we’ve heard nothing of this and that there is even a possibility that Warhop will be allowed to keep his job. Arroyo may not have done anything to deserve losing his job as QB coach – but honestly – he doesn’t have much experience and I’m quite sure we can do way better. let Koetter choose who wants to work directly with the QBs.

    Move on

  16. JFat Says:

Kinda worried about that too Pickgrin. I wonder if they are waiting to see if the Falcons hold on to the offensive staff that’s still there after they hire a new HC? He might want to bring in all his old ATL buds.

You’d probably know quite bit about this subject from personal experience.

  28. crazy Says:

It would be interesting to know what Koetter thinks of the many pages in Tedford’s playbook we got a glimpse of in preseason but never saw again. Maybe we’ll see some of them next year.

  29. Delson Says:

I’ve had 2 dreams that have come true for the bucs, in all seriousness. In one we traded for revis. During that season I also dreamt we fired schiano n mark dominik. Pretty crazy. If anything comes up about the draft I’ll let yall know

IndyBucsfan FTW. That’s the very first thought that came to my mind.

And I agree with ChanEpic’s tossing the flag and giving a 15 yarder for CAPS!

Perhaps some folks are new to the internet and blogging etiquette. Typing in caps is the internet equivalent of YELLING!!! I’ll listen to most folks except when they YELL at me. Now if you use it just for EMPHASIS…that’s different.

  31. Matt Says:

When we are 6-10 to 8-8 next year you will all be able to clearly see how we tanked it this year. There is such a fine line between winning and losing and when you are only above average like most our free agents are, 75% efforts looks horrible. We have a real proven o coordinator and we’re getting 3 of the top.100 college players and we’ll bevmuch much better.

  32. ChessMaster Says:

    Has Arroyo been fired yet?

  33. StPeteBucsFan Says:

What sane person would admit to helping Arroyo this past season. Hey the schemes may have been awful, the play design p!ss poor but at least Arroyo had
    ZERO skill in play calling.

For Gawds sake i could sit on the couch and call run-run-pass punt.

The actual act of Sunday play calling is an often overlooked skill set. It’s one thing to coach em up, to have a great plan, but if Marcus Arroyo is calling the plays as they say in NYC Forgetaboutit.

  34. Desanova Says:

    Arroyo? Never heard of him.

  35. Fort Myers Dave Says:

StPeteBucFan is right; even if Tedford was chatting with Arroyo for an hour each night there is no way he would owe up to that after the Bucs finished 30th overall and simply looked inept and lost in play calling. We have a better chance of the Cubs announcing to the world that they initiated contact with Maddon and his agent the minute after Andy F bolted for LA….

Pickgrin is right by saying: “As I said in the previous post – We are better off with an experienced NFL OC in Koetter and the #1 pick with choice of potential franchise QBs than anywhere Tedford could have led us….”

BTW I wish someone would ask Tedford about Warhop; did he have anything to do with the hire or was it all on L&L? I am amzed that he is till with the Bucs, along with Arroyo and the speciual teams coach O’Dea; all were textbook examples of rock bottom coaching…. Of course then again Tedford is not going to touch any question about Warhop with a 10 foot pole as any acknowledgement of working with the sieve would reflect badly on Mr Tedford. Good luck to him in BC Canada, hopefully he never needs to get anymore stints or bypasses.
