Mike Bajakian: A Diverse Man

January 24th, 2015
New Bucs QB coach Mike Bajakian isn't just a spread-option guy, his star pupil said.

New Bucs QB coach Mike Bajakian isn’t just a spread-option guy, his star pupil said.

Moments after the hiring became official, new Bucs quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian was already labeled, and maybe a bit prematurely.

Arguably the best college football writer in the land, Fox Sports’s Bruce Feldman, Twittered out how the Bucs may very well be aiming for spread-option quarterback Marcus Mariota because Bajakian is a spread-option guy.

Hold up! said one of Bajakian’s top pupils, quarterback Dan LeFevour told Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times; Bajakian, is a man of many disciplines.

“Coach Bajakian has worked in a lot of different offenses. The last few years, he’s been running spread, so they’ve been looking for that dual-threat quarterback,” he said. “That doesn’t mean that’s all he’s done. He’s worked in a pro-style offense before, in his first stint at Central Michigan and with the Bears. He’s well-versed in many different languages of football, so he could adapt to a lot of different schemes and be successful.”

It is awfully early to make any determination and rookie quarterback assumptions. Marcus Mariota has yet to have a pro day, has yet to work at the combine, has yet to be interviewed. Neither has Jameis Winston.

While Joe knows the Mariota Gang wants to connect dots, the dots aren’t quite yet laid out. A lot of time between now and the end of April, folks.

Winston isn’t going to win any track record but he can run too! It could be that the Bucs would like another weapon in their arsenal but it definitely don’t mean that they automatically want Mariota who is one dimensional. Winston can do it all.

  2. biff barker Says:

Connecting dots would at least provide a brief reprieve from the daily thrum of drafting the oft wayward Winston.

    At least several hours.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So far….we still have no idea who the choice will be. Koetter really giives no clue….neither does Bajakian…..however, it certainly includes the possibility of Mariota…..they could have chosen from probably 25 or 30 candidates from college & the NFL that had little to know spread experience….but didn’t. Sounds like they may simply be keeping their options open…

  4. JGW1981 Says:

Mariota passed on 70% of his dropbacks (2014 stats), and a lot of his runs were play call designs–not him running because he couldn’t find an open receiver. In all, I would estimate he ran on, at most, 15% of his dropbacks. I wouldn’t label that as one dimensional.

  5. Shipwrecked87 Says:

    Amen Biff Barker.

That winston bandwagon is becoming awfully full it’s about to fall apart. Just like it’s premature we’re going to draft Mariota because we have a spread QB coach, it’s also premature to say we prefer Winston because he’s played in a pro style offense. That argument is becoming very boring now. You can’t mock a guy for something he’s never done. Last week I had to suffer through Winston week. Today I raise my glass for Mariota week.

  6. Mike30#1bucfan Says:

I really hope this organization does not make the foolish mistake of passing on Jameis Winston. This kid has that clutch gene in him that can’t be thought! Other than a really bad extortion attempt by a Cleat chaser this kid has done nothing but immature college kid stuff. I want the Buccaneers to get back to championship winning football not just blown out of portion back yard video game football stuff(MM). What happens if we tailor the offense around that crap and he gets the daylight smack out of him first came in and is to timid to be himself or is lost for the year. Is Josh McCown coming in to run the spread offense off the bench (please no)!

    JAMEIS WINSTON PLEASE!

  7. biff barker Says:

With appx 70% of NFL snaps taken from the gun, QB’s aren’t exactly dropping back.

A dual threat QB in the NFL is designed to force the defense to assign someone to spy the QB. You aren’t running for big gains as much as just enough yardage to move the chains.

    re: Kap, Wilson, Cam.

  8. beeric Says:

Tough being a bucs fan during the annual 7 month draft mode.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

I think the disturbing aspect of this hire is he has roots with Lovie and not Koetter. The qb coach needs to be the OCs guy not the head coaches guy. Especially given Lovie’s horrendous offenses in the past. I just hope the damage lovie creates this off season which he will just like last off season does not set next year’s head coach and staff back too much. It’s all about minimizing the damage Lovie and his staff cause.

save my team! Trade Lovie to ISIS

  10. Captain Stagger Says:

I read the new QB coach is cool with rape and theft….so Winston’s gotta be the guy right????

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So far….I’m reading Mariota actually being criticized for having wide open recievers and for running the ball….also for doing a superb job with the offense he was given to run.
How about lets give the guy an opportunity to at least prove he can drop back and throw a pass to a covered reciever.

It sure would be nice for our Bucs to have a “wide open” reciever once in a while….it seemed like most of our completed passes were jump balls or back shoulder throws….

  12. biff barker Says:

    TMax…. funny stuff!

I’m optimistic for two reasons though…

    1) Lovie, no offense means no NFL job for life.

    2) Koetter is NFL seasoned and credible.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    Biff

I agree with you Koetter has legit credibility. Koette is my only hope That the damage lovie causes can be minimized

    Captain stagger

When was Winston charged or convicted for rape. oh yeah he wasn’t… if you hate Winston that’s fine but to make shit up well now you sound like the MSNBC hacks. I hope no one that you know us ever falsely accused of a crime.

  14. Captain Stagger Says:

So…..Winston’s accuser is featured in a sundance film with Lady Gaga about campus rape telling her side if the story….can’t wait till Jameis’s mug shot is plastered on the side of Ray Jay…….

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“During Winston’s pregame walk into the Rose Bowl, he appeared to mimic the puffing of a marijuana cigarette before passing it to fans.” LA Times…

What disturbs me is that Winston continues to show extreme immaturity…..even on the national stage prior to one of the most important games of his life…after all that has happened with him….he still doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes.
Those that want simply catagorize all of this as childish behavior are right….that’s exactly what it is….but the question is….How long will it continue?

  16. tmaxcon Says:

The accuser / lier should charged with purjury for changing her story so many times. Lady Gaga and the rest of the Hollyweird’os jump on any bandwagon cause to promote their agendas and keep their pathetic careers in the news.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    Liar not lier auto correct

    TBBf

Nice reach he was mimicking a duck call not a joint. Again nice reach.

  18. Eric Says:

    That is an interesting dot.

    We shall see.

Of course FSU runs a ton of shotgun and Jameis made a lot of key runs during his tenure.

Not that he can run as well as Marcus.

But when it comes to pitching the ball downfield Winston is outstanding.

I’d go with arm over legs. But either way lets get a dang QB.

  19. Dan Says:

Denial. Joe is in denial at this point.

I’ll explain this once again. Lovie Smith HATES players with character concerns. Look how fast he shipped out Mike Williams last year. He also shipped out Barron and Casillas for acting up. What makes anyone think he has the patience to deal with someone as immature as Winston?

I have another aspect to add to this argument. I think Mariota would provide Lovie more job security. Fans will demand Winston starts from day 1. If he plays like he did this year (lots of INTs) and we go 2-14 again, then Lovie is gone. If they take Mariota they can easily put him behind McCown. He’d probably sit half the year until McCown once again showed us what a waste of money and time he is. Win 1 or 2 garbage games late in the year instead of tanking and he can tell the Glazers they improved. Buys him the 3rd year on his contract and maybe more if Mariota continues to improve and win games. Once again, one screwup from Winston and he’ll likely be gone with Lovie following him out the door. You can’t make all the throws if you’re too stupid to stay on the field.

Factoring those ideas, plus our OC and QB coach hires, I’d say Lovie and Licht have tipped their hand in the Mariota favor. Wake up Joe!

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    Dan

If lovie hates character issues why did he trade for and publicly support Brandon Marshall when his CRIMES were much more serious. Lovie’s choirboys were 2 – 14. It’s the real world if lovie can’t deal with some player issueso, he needs to go coach a church league softball team.

  21. Lovie Smith Says:

    We will draft Marcus Mariota

  22. tmaxcon Says:

Lovie Smith then you will be back in the basement were you belong.

  23. Barry Says:

I read a Pewter Report tweet that someone asked them who would be a good (babysitter) for Winston if they in fact drafted Winston. PR reply was if they even have to have the discussion of a babysitter that they won’t draft him (Winston).

  24. biff barker Says:

    tmaxcon Says:

    Dan

If lovie hates character issues why did he trade for and publicly support Brandon Marshall when his CRIMES were much more serious. Lovie’s choirboys were 2 – 14.
    ———————————
Fair question. But the reality is drafting a Franchise QB first overall is far more difficult to replace than a FA WR.

Ex. the Joshua Tinkerbell Freeman experiment.

Besides, let’s fess up and acknowledge that Lovie will only recommend a pick because the Glazer’s will have the final say.

  25. Eric Says:

Well when the police, prosecutor, and the Supreme Court Justice don’t believe your story, Lady Ga Ga is a good a place to go as any.

Not that she is a publicity hound or anything.

I wonder what version she will tell this time? She is up to four, maybe one of those or a new one.

    Go Jaboo.

  26. JFF Says:

“While Joe knows the Mariota Gang wants to connect dots, the dots aren’t quite yet laid out. A lot of time between now and the end of April, folks.”

    Completely agree Joe!

However, in the latest interview with Bajakian he goes out of his way to name Chip Kelly and state his understanding of Kelly’s offensive philosophy and concepts. That seems to point towards Mariota being the pick, although obviously Bajakian could work with Winston too.

  27. Kevin S Says:

Just listened to Koetter’s full conference call. I hope this guy becomes our new head coach, because if he doesn’t…..we will lose him in two years. In a perfect world Lovie would step down to DC but I highly doubt that will happen

  28. JFF Says:

    @Dan good arguments my friend.

I’d add the point that Lovie desires mobility and athleticism in his QBs, and Winston is mobile but not as athletic as McCown even.

Also think back to the last game of the year and the desperation panic mode tanking that happened after the lead was built. Why go to such great lengths to secure the top pick unless you’re already locked into a player? That player can’t be Winston because no other team is gonna draft him #1 overall.

The pick will be Mariota or Leonard Williams. The decision will come down to whether the organization fully buys into Mariota. I bet they will.

  29. Soggy Says:

I think lovies has 2 more years minimum only if we draft either QB with the first pick..

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I was at the last game and can guarantee you that we tanked……and, we tanked because we wanted the choice of QBs…….we didn’t want any chance of losing our choice….we can’t be absolutely certain what that choice is…but my suspicion is that it is Mariota…

  31. Skyline Crew Says:

I think the reach is trying to call it a duck call and not what it was. You don’t hold a duck call that way, you don’t put it to your lips once and throw it away or pass it on, whichever he was doing.

  32. Dr Feelgood Says:

I’ll keep saying this until the accusations on this site cease, though I know they won’t. Please…those of you that allude to rape with Winston….PLEASE post that Duke should disband lacrosse because their team is full of GANG-RAPISTS!!! At least that’s what their recanting whore of an accuser claimed.

  33. rayjay1122 Says:

    @TBBF

Yes we absolutely tanked for the pick. I agree also that we have no idea who we will select at this point. There is still so much work to be done by the coaching staff to dissect all things Winston and Mariota. We just have to have hope and faith that whoever they pick becomes a very good NFL QB. The jock sniffing by some Winston and Mariota lovers is pretty entertaining but I mostly appreciate the few people here who remain objective and bring actual unbiased reasoning to the table.

  34. Bucbob1 Says:

I read where Bajakian may still not come here. He may remain in the college ranks, and take a head coaching job at Central Michigan. Haven’t heard otherwise yet.

  35. Eric Hernandez Says:

I love how when something points to Wiston being the pick Joe loves to connect the dots. When it’s Mariota oh no we can’t do that.

Truth is we don’t. I want Maroita but in defense of Winston that picture wasn’t of smoking weed.

If your truly a Bucs fan, NOT a FSU fan or a Winston hater, does it matter who it is as long as we start winning. If you want Winston and the Bucs draft Mariota and in three they are competing for the NFC title isn’t that what’s important?

  36. buddha Says:

It’s a done deal: Mariota. Accept it or find another team to support.

  37. rayjay1122 Says:

I also want to clarify that expressing concern about Winston or Mariota due to behavior and college offensive style respectively, is not jock sniffing to me but the people who are demanding one guy at this point without using reasoning and attacking the people with opposing views is jock sniffing and hating. Entertaining but useless posts have dominated this debate with the exception of a handful of people.

  38. Pickgrin Says:

I think what’s interesting is that neither the OC hire nor the QB coach hire tips the hand as to which QB the Bucs will select. Both these coaches have experience with pro style AND spread/read option offenses. Perhaps that was the reason these two who have never worked together were hired by Lovie – because they are both versatile and can develop schemes and coaching designs that cater to the player’s strengths.

It’s very possible the Bucs have not made a final decision on which QB to choose yet – and are covering their bases either way with these coaching hires.

Regardless of which QB is chosen – We won’t know squat about what the offense will really look like until we see it in games. And just like last year – it will probably be a big hush hush, under wraps kind of deal again so as to gain some perceived advantage over the 1st few opponents of the year by not putting much on tape until real games start in Sept.

While I concede that its likely that there is somewhat of an advantage (at least for a couple real games) in not showing much at all of your offense – It sure makes it frustrating for fans who just want to see what their offense looks like and hope to gauge its development during training camp and pre-season.

  39. bucs4lyfe Says:

this is a lot of noise over a position as simple as a quarterbacks coach…..if mariotta has been running a spread offense his entire college career does he really need a spread offense qb coach to teach him the finer points of a spread offense? besides i’ll bet my money on the assumption that lovie doesn’t want an offense that’s scores fast and often as dumb as that sounds but well it is lovie and he did have his OC say he works for lovie meaning he will run the offense lovie wants. mariotta or Winston doesn’t matter because I think bucs fans might as well get used to the fact that lovie probably wants a boring offense

  40. Eric Hernandez Says:

I do think the QB coach does point to Mariota a little bit. In the new QB coach you have someone who used the spread offense with knowledge of a pro style offense. Now if you wanted to help a spread option QB with the transition if would be someone like him.

    But then again who knows.

  41. Posey99 Says:

How dare Mariota find the wide open receiver. The guy that said Mariota is one demensional is delusional. No way lovie smith uses the most valuable thing the franchise has owned in years to select a quarterback that has a history of immaturity and the traits that lovie smith doesn’t tolerate. Does anybody pay attention to what’s going on in the NFL today? Does anybody remember our quarterback Josh Freeman? Common sense.

  42. Eric Hernandez Says:

    @bucs4lyfe

I’m going to give Lovie the benefit of the doubt. Lovie knows if he fails here this? maybe his last chance. I believe he knows he needs an offense the has the ability to put up points. That’s where the whole “speed in space” came from. Tedford’s was suppose to be this up tempo run and pass game (similar to and Oregon offense) with pro-style routes.

I do think you’ll see a version of that. If Lovie wanted boring offense why not hire Greg Roman

  43. Teacherman777 Says:

    Koetter is a great hire.

    Steal somebody from Atl.

Koetter will want payback for gettin fired.

But we still have the worst o-line in football.

    What are we gonna do?

  44. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Maybe the Bucs should trade their #1 pick this year and Glennon to Cleveland for Johnny Football? He too was highly touted here on JBF as a massive upgrade to any QB on the Bucs roster (hmm, déjà vu!?). Pay no attention to reports from Manziel’s vet teammates calling him a joke, he can be the face of a franchise just like Winston! Guys please at least come to terms with the fact that while physical skills/talent are important if you drafting an emotionally immature player to be the franchise savior/face with a high round pick you are more often than not just asking to have it come back to bite you in the ass. Buyer beware Cleveland….I mean Tampa

  45. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @matt

one dimensional??? what are you watching. He threw for 4454 yards on 68.3% completion percentage. Only 4 INTs. He also averaged 10 yards a pass. Those are not elements of a rushing QB.

His rushing numbers are also great. 770 yards with a 5.7 average. He also had 15 rushing TDs.

You would call him a dual threat QB. But to say he is a 1 dimensional QB is off base and ignorant.

The best way to describe what he can be in the NFL is simple. Look at what New England does with their offense. They run the ball and throw passes under 10 yards. That is their scheme. It opens up the occasional long ball. But for the most part it is short quick passes. Ala Mariotta

  46. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

As a comparison. Shameis threw for 3907 yards on only 8.4 yards per attempt. He only threw 25 TDs with a wholesome 18 INTs.

His rushing stats are hilarious for someone his size. 65 yards on 57 attempts. That’s a grand total of 1.1 yards per rush. He also had 3 rushing TDs.

Put those stats against eachother. For a guy (Shameis) to supposedly be in a pro system and be such a great QB. He YPA is almost 2 yards less per throw than the guy who runs a spread short passing game.

    Stats don’t lie people

  47. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

On topic, my cousin plays at the University of Tennessee. And I live less than an hour away from Knoxville where they are. He was the starting QB until this year when he lost his spot. He loves Bajakian and what he brings to the table. Not sure how it will work out here in the NFL. He is comfortable with Lovie from previous seasons. He may know other offenses but he is mainly a spread kind of guy. Following Butch Jones all these years has given him no other options. It’ll be interesting to see what he does here with whatever QB we get.

  48. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

My guess as of today is Shameis will either be in Tennessee or falling to the Jets. He WILL NOT be the #1 pick. Take it to the bank b*t*h*s….

  49. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

Mariota to Bucs, Winston to Jets

    BANK ON IT!

  50. lion Says:

Um this is the Bucs QB coach, not the OC. Doesn’t matter what types of offenses that he used to run prior to coming here. His job won’t be to run and offense or implement a system. His job will be to coach up the quarterbacks, such as proper mechanics, footwork, etc.. He will be running and implementing whichever scheme and system that Koetter implements. Trying to connect what quarterback we are choosing by what quarterbacks coach is a bit of a stretch.

The fact that the real guy in charge of the offense, Dirk Koetter, has never run a spread offense in his career should immediately shut down these false innuendos that choosing Bajakian as QB coach means the Bucs are leaning towards Mariota.

  51. Brett Says:

Smoke screens. I have a feeling that we are going to have a repeat of 2006. Texans passed over Reggie Bush, and Vince Young to draft Mario Williams. The Texans were in desperate need of a QB and Bush was supposed to be the next Barry Sanders. Every expert threw their papers in the air and yelled “WTF?” when Mario was called. It has been too long since the “experts” were shown they are just practicing another form of meteorology.

  52. lion Says:

However, with the fact that Bajakian shut down head coaching jobs in college to become the Bucs QB coach, that this must means Bucs are going to draft a QB with their first pick and not trade it away. Do you really think Bajakian would pass up on being a head coach to be Josh McCowns quarter back coach? Not a chance in hell. This move cements the fact that the Bucs will be picking a quarterback first overall.

  53. Sick of this $hit Says:

    TBBF
Winston didnt mimic smoking pot on national tv. Hes makes bad choices, but hes not that stupid. It was a mimic of a duck call. Joe covered this already in a previous post.

  54. Geno Says:

It doesn’t really matter who the qb is. I just want a winning season.

  55. Buccfan37 Says:

I would put Mariota at 9 to 2 odds as the Bucs first pick. Winston at 20 to 1. Neither QB at 10 to 1. I think the choice has already been set in concrete.

Mariota passed on 70% of his dropbacks (2014 stats), and a lot of his runs were play call designs–not him running because he couldn’t find an open receiver. In all, I would estimate he ran on, at most, 15% of his dropbacks. I wouldn’t label that as one dimensional.

    ——

And more than 60% of his passes traveled 3 yards or less downfield both this season and last. And even when he did throw down the field, it was aided by the fact that defenses play up looking for the short throw and receivers run wide open 10-30 yards downfield.

    —–

WTF dude? Obviously you don’t understand how odds work. If Mariota is 9:2 that means that 2 X in 11 he would be the pick, and that WInston would be the pick 1 X in 21, and neither QB 1 X in 11. According to your odds there are 22 to 5 odds (23% chance) that the Bucs take either Winston or Mariota but somehow you think that there 1 X in 11 they take neither, meaning 10 out of 11 X (91% chance) they take one or the other? So you’re saying there’s only a 23% chance they take Mariota or Winston but then you write that there’s a 91% chance they take Mariota or Winston.

Obviously you are completely unqualified to discuss odds and you should really try to make your points using math and statistics you understand.

Uhhhh, yeah they do. How else do you explain the stat that Mariota throws at or behind the line of scrimmage more than 60% of the time? How does that translate to the NFL? Quick hint: it doesn’t

    Brandon… 9 to 2 odds is 4 1/2 to 1.

When looking for a Qb for the NFL, one of my last concerns is his rushing numbers. Mike Vick ran for a lot of yards at VT too. As the highlights showed, Jamies can be allusive and extend plays. At the end of the day, I don’t want my Qb running too much. Injuries. It comes down to who the front office thinks will be the better passer.

  66. Billl Says:

Mariota is already dinged from just one tackle. Looks like he could have durability questions.

If the Bucs choose the highest rated player in the draft it will be Winston.

  67. Pickgrin Says:

Butch Jones – the HC that Bajakian served as OC and QB coach under for the last 8 years at 3 different schools – said he’s known that Bajakian had NFL coaching aspirations. So it makes more sense to work your way up through the ranks at the NFL level then continue to climb ranks in College football hoping to make the switch to the NFL “some day”.

Bajakian is not going to take the Central Michigan HC job. He will be here to help guide our #1 rookie QB.

“It’s the highest level,” Bajakian said. “It’s the best football in the world. I think everyone wants to be at the highest level, the chance to be the best of the best.”

  69. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And by the way folks if you watched last nights probowl you had to have seen where they indicated Mariota isn’t even sure whether or not he’ll throw at the combine considering his recent shoulder booboo from the tackle in the championship game. Sound like BS to me. Bret Farve,Peyton Mannining,Joe Flacco all played in the senior bowl to mention a few. The duck passed on a invitation why? Sore shoulder maybe? Not buying it,no senior bowl,no combine reaks of not wanting to show throwing ability on certain stages.
