“I Mean, Nobody Does That”

January 8th, 2015
The price to move up from No. 20 to No. 1 to swap picks with the Bucs would be too obscene for Eagles strongman Chip Kelly.

The ransom to move up from No. 20 to No. 1 to swap picks with the Bucs would be too obscene for Eagles strongman Chip Kelly.

Bucs fans are antsy these days, and it really isn’t because ghostly defensive end Michael Johnson may return. There are other reasons.

Bucs fans, all three types, the Jameis-Will-Save Us-types, the loud Mariota Gang and the tail-between-their-legs, scaredy-cats who can’t decide whether to walk across a street or not but want the Bucs to trade the No. 1 pick away, are all worked into a frenzy, partially ignited with the news yesterday that Jameis Winston decided to enter the 2015 draft.

Some of the timid and meek want the Bucs to trade the pick to the Eagles thinking Chip Kelly will pay a king’s ransom to have a chance to draft his former pupil at Oregon, Mariota.

“The Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune, scoffed at such a notion. He thinks there is a better chance of Joe hooking up with Rachel Watson. That’s essentially what Kaufman explained in his weekly visit with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, on the station that bears his name, “Mad Dog Radio,” part of the family of sports channels heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio.

“As far as Bucs fans are concerned, Chris, all they care about is what are they going to do with that No. 1 pick. They are trying to devise these scenarios where the Eagles move up from [No.] 20 because Chip Kelly is in charge of all personnel decisions and he likes [Marcus] Mariota,” Kaufman said. “Chris, to move up from 20 to No. 1, you have to give up a piece of the franchise. I mean, nobody does that. I don’t think it is practical.”

If the Bucs could somehow pull that off, it would be a haul of epic proportions. Three years ago, the Redskins moved up from No. 6 to No. 2 and had to cough up three first-round picks and a second-round pick.

To move up from No. 20 to No. 1, geez, the Eagles would pretty much have to give up two complete drafts. Not to mention future top draft picks or a bunch of players.

Nobody knows if Kelly really covets Mariota that much to trade away the team’s immediate future. Hell, the Bucs trading for Chucky was a steal by comparison.

There is reson for some anxiety….but when you dig deep, it’s the good kind….like knowing a big prize is awaiting you but you just don’t know how big.

Sure, somebody could trade up….I doubt from 20….but how about the Jets at 6?
Hell, how about the Texans wanting Mariota instead of Winston? Now wouldn’t that please Joe??? Winston and a 2nd & 3rd round pick.

Being an old impatient guy, I have learned that the clock ticks and eventually $hit happens!!!

Okay that was really funny. Now I have to wipe my computer screen.

  4. flmike Says:

Stick to your guns, draft MM, mark my words, Winston will show up to camp at 280lbs by his 3rd year in the league. He already has a weight problem and he’s just 21, think about when his body fully matures and he can’t keep the weight down, great now you have an immature immobile overweight anchor.

  5. BucBob1 Says:

Seriously doubt if this scenario ever happens. We earned the first round pick by suffering through a horrid season, and we are not going to trade it away.

  6. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @flmike

    Nail hit head.

The look of Sean King, the future of Jamarcus Russel. The arm of Byron Leftwich.

  7. MTM Says:

Early morning panic inducing article. The Glazers want Mariota at number. They tried to hire Chip Kelly to run an up tempo offense. I don’t see them passing on Mariota. If Lovie’s not on board he will be gone.

  8. seminolebuccaneer Says:

Two 1st rounder & two 2nd rounders spread over this year and the next 2 years would suffice

  9. Phil Says:

Jameis Winston should be the pick. I don’t see any option quarterbacks having long term success in the NFL other than Russell Wilson and Mariota is no Russell Wilson. He doesn’t have any leadership qualities. Any we need a leader at quarterback.

  10. Sapp, STFU Says:

Here is the win/win scenario for Bucs.

    1. Draft Mariota
    2. Lovie has 1, maybe 2 years to be successful.
    3. Chip Kelly’s contract has 2 years remaining. If he wants out after this year, (Eagles will have hard time keeping him for the last year.)
    4. Chip Kelly demands he get to coach the Bucs with Mariota.
    5. Because Chip spurned Glazers last time around, Bucs get him for a discount.

So, draft Mariota, aka: the Chip Kelly Bait. You either win with Mariota or you get the coach that covets him.

  11. Sapp, STFU Says:

And as all this happens, we can read stories about Tony Dungy visiting Winston in prison talking about how he is ready for redemption.

Eagles can then get Winston for cheap once Chip Kelly moves here.

    @ CHIPKELLYBAIT

Well said. Its a winning scenario.

  16. meh Says:

I would not trade 2 complete drafts for our pick. There is no scenario where I agree to move from #1 to #20.

I wouldn’t trade lower than #2, and then only if both Mariota and Winston are available.

  17. Scotty ini Fat Antonio Says:

Maybe Philadelphia will package some of their 2015 draft picks to move up in to the Top 10 and then mortgage their next 2 years of future draft picks to us.

  18. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Raheem the Dream to be the next Giants DC? Hmmm…Raheem in the media capital of the world. Sounds like a match to me….LMFFAO!

  19. BoJim Says:

Why don’t you guys get it thru your thick punkin heads that Mariota’s game does not translate to the NFL? It will take him years to become a pocket passer. If he can.

  20. Espo Says:

If they trade their future to us ala Washington, then why not?

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

The only trade I would buy into would be one that gets us a good quarterback, three 1st-3rds and maybe a good offensive lineman. And no team is going to give all that up.

  22. Draft the Chip Kelly Bait Says:

Stop acting like we are one QB draft pick away from a championship. Regardless of who we get in the draft, we aren’t built for a run yet. It will take a few years for our O-line to gel once we have the right pieces.

“Raheem the Dream to be the next Giants DC? Hmmm…Raheem in the media capital of the world. Sounds like a match to me….LMFFAO!”

I saw that too, and I’m thinking the Giants are interviewing him so that the Redskins consider promoting him to DC as well. I wish the Falcons would make him DC 😉

Jameis Winston IS coming to Tampa.

The combine awaits. I hope you’re ready Marcus….

“Stop acting like we are one QB draft pick away from a championship. Regardless of who we get in the draft, we aren’t built for a run yet. It will take a few years for our O-line to gel once we have the right pieces.”

Now that’s not true. When you have the “right pieces”, it become a matter of games, not seasons, for the offensive line to gel. We’ve seen it happen before. Several times.

Take the quarterback and build around him. Period. We have 9 picks in the draft. We can get the QB AND the offensive line in this draft (and free agency if needed).

  26. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t care what they do as long as it makes sense and benefits the team. They need a lot of good players, but they also need a real QB. Winston does not fit this billett. L&L can not afford to miss on another round of picks and free agents. Someone needs to pay homage to the Football Gods.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

BuccaneerBonzai..I have a cousin (non Buc fan) that thinks our team can be damn competitive if we get the right QB.

He cited Evans, Jackson, and ASJ with a half decent QB as his reason.

  28. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

That at minimum would have to give us 4 #1 picks to equal the value of the #1 overall pick, if that team is the Eagles and throw in Nick Foles…or Chip Kelly and dont trade….I like the idea above whoever floated the Mariotta wait a year and get Chip Kelly, because whoever we pick if its Winston, the bucs wil maybe be 4-12, Lovie and Licht are terrible

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Jameis Winston #2 QB prospect in the draft (until the combine that is ) and #6 overall prospect in the draft PERIOD!

Yeah you guys are right Jameis sucks. These scouts no nothing.

I repeat #6 overall prospect in the draft.

  30. BucTrooper Says:

After chip Kelly jilted the Bucs for the coaching gig, I wouldn’t even take his call… Out of sheer spite. Not only that but I would try and trade my second rounder to get to 19 and take the player he’s looking at just as a bonus f-you.

  35. Draft the Chip Kelly Bait Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai

I cannot argue with your logic. And I cannot be sure Winston won’t be successful. But knowing the Glazers, Lovie (and the spirit of Dungy), I highly doubt they will bring in Winston. Glazers will be happy with Mariota and Lovie’s long-term view.

If the defense becomes lights-out early in the 2015 season, Glazers will be happy training Mariota over time.

  36. Barry Says:

I like Winston’s rapist wit. I mean women accusing him of rape are just gold diggers, right? To me, if you can buy off the accusers it’s no harm no foul. I like Winston theory, If you think you hear her moan then that means Yes…. This kids a winner. #FaceOfTheFranchise #WinstonToTheBucs

  37. Bucfan4life Says:

You guys crack me up. Yes let’s draft Mariota so that we can get Kelly in the future. Welcome to Fantasyland. Go back to your video games please and don’t waste our time with silly posts. Bojim you are so right. I predict Mariota is going to free fall on draft boards like Bridgewater did last year. Bubble screens at line if scrimmage to burners that pick up 40 YAC is what make his stats look good. Once the GMs start watching all the film and see the missed throws and gimmicky offense he will be lucky to go in the top 10. He is a project QB that will take years to develop. Jesus the guy has never taken a snap that wasn’t out of the shotgun. Again, for the record I am not an FSU fan but I do think Winston is a no brainer. Two days ago when I read rumors that Winston was going to stay my hope was that we would trade back a few spots (NOT TWENTY!!!!), pick up a 2nd rounder, and take Hundley with the 1st pick in the second rounder. You guys that keep saying Mariota aren’t paying attn.

  38. MadMax Says:

“tail between my legs, scared” because I recognize a few more holes we could fill with a trade?

  39. Brian D Says:

“Winston already has a weight problem”

Who? Where? What? HOW do you people come up with this bull? Am I watching FoxNews? Next thing I’m gonna read is that Winston is in cahoots with ISIS.

  40. Draft the Chip Kelly Bait Says:

TBBF – you referred to yourself in 3rd person. . .

  41. Rob Says:

If you look at the Eagles draft position, and then look at the little point-value chart, Philly would have to give up their ENTIRE DRAFT THIS YEAR plus their FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD ROUND PICKS NEXT YEAR to get near the 3,000 points that pick is supposedly worth.

It’s never going to happen, and the Bucs will draft Mariota and get out of the cellar soon after.

  42. Uk_buc Says:

Agree with MadMax 100 per cent

Anyway, just because these two are the best this year (which is concensus), are they definitely better than whoever may come out and be available in, say, the top 5 next year?

Is the fact that they are the best two THIS year making people overestimate their abilities in context of QBs who come out other years?

  43. Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

Ditka did in New Orleans, just sayin’ is possible. I’d rather draft a QB though.

  44. gt40bear Says:

The reason for the anxiety, Joe is precisely because we are Bucs fans! We understand that, given options or no, they are most likely going to screw this up! This franchise doesn’t exactly have a stellar draft or free agency record over the past 40 years! As I have said before, it would take the Eagles top three picks in the next two drafts AND Nick Foles to get me to even answer the phone and considerably more to pull the trigger. Yes this team is horribly in need of a franchise QB but it is also MANY players from being a GOOD team.

  45. Rob C Says:

I wouldn’t take either quarterback. We need an Offensive Line. It doesn’t matter if Andrew Luck or Payton Manning were our quarterback. They would get run over due to this terrible “O” line. We need to stop picking up has been lineman. Let’s trade down and pick up some lineman.

  46. pick6 Says:

i have never seen a QB look bad in Chip Kelly’s system. it cuts back the thinking and puts more pressure on tempo and outstanding play from the supporting cast. if you can make mark sanchez look like a pro bowl QB, why on earth would you mortgage your future for ANY Quarterback prospect in the draft? Chip Kelly is to QBs what Shanahan was to RBs. you can spread that investment throughout your team to greater effect. the eagles’ greatest asset with Kelly on the sideline is they might be the one consistent playoff contender that doesn’t have to pay a QB $20+ million and figure out the rest of the payroll around that number

  47. Ryan Says:

What about the jets? They might want to trade up to assure they get their franchise quarter back

  48. Rob Says:

“Ditka did in New Orleans, just sayin’ is possible. I’d rather draft a QB though.”

Sure, once every 20 or so years someone is dumb enough to do that. It didn’t do Ditka any good either.

  49. Bucfan4life Says:

Let’s see on the offensive line you have a center, two guards and two tackles. The Bucs have 6 picks after drafting a QB and a lot of cap space for free agents. The Bucs can overhaul the line in the off season and address a few other shortcomings as well. I have to assume Lovie’s major priorities this offseason will be drafting a QB and upgrading that horrid o-line.

  50. BC BUC Says:

Who would take Foles, Eagles first rounders this and next year??

  51. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Buccfan4life you speaking gospel, the only problem is most of these folks are football illiterate. And I agree that kid from Oregon is going to tumble draft night. Folks you have to have some experience playing that position from up under the center. Words can’t describe how important that is when talking about playing at the NFL level.
