Sticky Spot Dooms Dietrich-Smith

December 7th, 2014

A Hollywood screenwriter couldn’t concoct the stuff that’s happened during this Bucs season. And you thought Greg Schiano, The MRSA and sleepy, leaky Josh Freeman was a fictional horror movie.

This year’s show includes horror, comedy, tear-jerkers and more.

Trailing the Lions 14-3 in the second quarter today, center Evan Dietrich-Smith rolled a snap to Josh McCown, who was under center. Detriot recovered the fumble at the Bucs’ 35-yard line, and the Lions quickly took a 17-3 lead. Darn, just when you thought things were better now that backup center Garrett Gilkey wasn’t starting.

McCown was asked about the muffed snap after the game and replied Dietrich-Smith found a bad spot on the Detroit turf. That’s right, not a divot on grass, not a frozen field in December, but a tricky patch of plastic grass.

“Evan just said he caught a bad spot in the ground and the ball didn’t come up,” McCown said. “So those are just bad breaks.”

McCown elaborated to say that when Dietrich Smith dragged the ball to snap it, then it got stuck.

Jiminy Christmas! Did the dog eat Dietrich-Smith’s homework, too?

This is a 300-pound tough guy snapping a football on artificial turf. A sticky spot? If so, perhaps it was from a Bucs offensive lineman soiling himself in fear of the Lions’ suffocating front-4.

this is what happens when the center and guards are scared and getting manhandled all game. then you will skittish mistakes like this.

  2. jb Says:

    Wow….just WOW!!!

  3. Mike10 Says:

Not a big EDS fan, but I see this as more of a (previously) proven pro making a hapless error in the face of a pointless season. Same reason why Jackson drops balls and Mankins body slams D-lineman. Doesn’t make it right tho – only people acting like they have to go out there and earn their money are the ones that don’t have it yet…. funny coincidence.

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

Forget Elmers, they need gorilla glue.

  5. Another J Says:

Earlier today, I called #90 the worst free agent pickup ever. Upon further review That title actually belongs to Dietrich-Smith!

  6. Simpleasthat Says:

Looking like the sucks might get the 1st overall pick

  7. port richey george Says:

I miss last years offensive line. i think josh mccown need to get vocal with his offensive linemen. i am sure if peyton manning or tom brady got knocked down that much they would have yelled at those o linemen at half time. most good QB’S in the NFL do get vocal when they have to deal with what happened in todays game. todays QB pressure was worse than what v. testaverde or trent dilfer had to deal with.

  8. INDYbucsfan Says:

    Here we com LA…

  9. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So McCoy dislocates his kneecap and they put him back in the game?

  10. OB Says:

I wonder if the ball was sticky and that is why McCown missed so many receivers?

  11. jo_mama Says:

I did not watch the game. Did I miss anything.

Feel bad for all the people that bothered to invest their time in this sh!t bag of a team with a moron of a coach.

  12. Simpleasthat Says:

Not really anything positive w today’s game. Not that I thought they had a snowballs chance in hell of winning today.

  13. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Can’t WAIT to hear the spin on McCoy’s injury. Someone needs to get fired on THAT decision alone.

  14. Architek Says:

Please end this franchise and move it! This is damnation for the NFL.

  15. Pelbuc Says:

World class excuse makers, the whole sorry bunch of them. No life, no energy, no will, no wonder.

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

Hey, you aint moving our beloved Bucs franchise anywhere.

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

The Glazers made a huge mistake, Instead of firing Coach Rah, they should have demoted him and made him do the radio call with Deckerhoff!

Deckerhoff ” Oh my, thats the six sack of the day for McCown!!!”
Rah ” Thats a grown man team right there!!!”

  18. Bucsqb12 Says:

    He’s gone next year….Bucs will overhaul the O line…..again

  19. lightningbuc Says:

Sticky Spot? Was Kellen Winslow Jr there?

  20. Simpleasthat Says:

I’d rather see glennon at this point.

  21. jo_mama Says:

Did Josh McCown cry again? Or is he all out of tears?

  22. jo_mama Says:

Real football being played tonight Pats Chargers.

  23. jo_mama Says:

Did Lovie hire another coach to count the players on the Field this week?

  24. tgreg Says:

    LOL!

  27. Chef Paul Says:

I’m sick of EDS’s sh1t!! He is the worst center in the league. It would nice if him and McCown went back to the NFC North and but focked eachother. Even those ug azz jerseys are too good to hold up their stupid worthless names!!

  28. NJBucsFan Says:

Hmmm. How does the raiders win play into the draft order

  29. JJV Says:

Lovie’s comments, excuses, as well as his actions have been a joke all season long. It was inevitable that it would rub off on his players. They are simple following the example from their leader. The best part of this comedy show, through actions and words, has been finding humor each and every week. The Comedy Channel has offered Lovie and his team a top spot on the network now. Congrats Lovie, you made the Bucs relevant again.

  30. The Buc Realist Says:

    Oakland wins!!!!

Bucs have the overall #1 pick!!!

  31. MadMax Says:

    teams with 2 wins:

    Raiders
    Bucs
    Jets
    Jags
    Titans

1st pick is up for grabs between 5 teams

  32. Yeah It's me! Says:

Off topic …But, I cant believe know one is talking about the Bucs have the first pick in the 2015 Draft after Raiders beating 49ers. Come on Joe! where you at? 🙂 jj.

  33. DallasBuc Says:

Sticky spot on the turf? Are we still talking about football?

  34. Todd Says:

Are we first do we beat oakland with the tie breaker ?

  35. JJV Says:

Thanks Dallas, humor now is the best medicine.

  36. Yeah It's me! Says:

Real good chance we’ll lose to the Panthers next week in Charlotte after the whipping Car put on No. I thought we had a good chance to win that game before this Sunday but not so much now. Which is good. at this point I dif want the first pick.

  37. The Buc Realist Says:

    @mad max

The bucs played the easiest schedule out of all the 2 win teams. They have the first pick. Now if they don’t win ( and that is a lock with Lovie as coach/gm) the bucs have the #1 pick!!!

  38. MadMax Says:

@Realist….AWESOME!!! Thanks for clearing it up for me.

  39. John Sapp Says:

This is what really p!$$e$ me OFF. Schiano should have coached this year, the final year of his contract. 1) Good chance we would not have wasted so much money on these FA busts as we have done this year. 2) Jim Harbaugh will be available in 2015, just about every source is reporting this. 3) We passed on Manziel but more importantly we passed on Bridgewater. Would love to know who Schiano-Dominick would have drafted. 4) Could of would have avoided the Tedford debacle 5) Still cannot fathom how EDS is an “upgrade” over Zuttah????? 6) How does Jacques Smith (league minmum salary) have double the numbers of the multi-millonaire Michael “invisible man” Johnson? I do not know who deserves the most severe “B!*$&% slap, Glazer Brat 1, Glazer brat 2, Lovie, Licht, all the above or someone else. We are Y-E-A-R-S away from having a team that can even sniff .500

  40. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Dietrich-Smith has been horrible all season.

I understand the need to clear cap space, but the one ol guy they should have kept was Zuttah.

Is he a free agent in 2015?

  41. sho-nuff Says:

    eds is pure garbage

  42. Howard Cosell Says:

We sent pro-bowl Zuttah to the Ravens for this?

  43. Mike10 Says:

Johnsapp – you know it’s bad when we’re rationalizing thing being better under Schiano and Dominik. Agree though, I think we’re far away from even .500

  44. BucBob1 Says:

Every game that goes by, just compounds our anger, that this coach, was arrogant(incredibly stupid) enough to dismantle last years O line.

  45. bucs4lyfe Says:

bunch of idiots now people are talking about moving the team, why do you move. how many mulligans was bowers given by schiano? we’ve put some horrible teams out on the field the last few years and fake ass fans come here every week and talk about this team like theres nothing to look forward to like there are no players playing lights out on this team like theres nothing to look forward to….hell the first overall pick is something to look forward to in my opinion but 3 games left to be talking about moving the team when you know you’ll be praying to the football god’s this offseason is stupid, ill be rooting for this team as soon as the new year begins, rooting for them to get rid of dead weight like Michael and leonard Johnson, it’s so bad it can only get better people. lovie is a proven winner and theres only one other proven winner on this team and that’s the guy we got in free agency after winning a superbowl championship last year. how can you think players that have sucked for years are more valuable than a proven winning head coach in this league, give it a rest already or find a new team

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

@bucs4lyfe- Funny, isn’t it! All these supposed fans! I’m sure many of them were clamoring for Johnson and Collins and EDS. Now they are all jumping ship, even on Lovie. With fans like these, who needs opponents?! Pathetic! Don’t worry though, as soon as the Bucs start winning these same “fans” will be telling us how they’ve been fans since ’76!
