Going Back To Mike Glennon?

December 7th, 2014
Attention Mike Glennon Mob.

Attention Mike Glennon Mob. Lovie has spoken.

Josh McCown is not a starting quarterback in the NFL. He stinks. He is erratic. He is turnover-prone. He throws into triple coverage. He is all but assured to fumble a snap every game.

As Joe has written before, starting McCown is the equivalent of bringing a butter knife to a gunfight.

After getting beaten up today by the Lions, Bucs coach Lovie Smith may have (finally) seen enough.

Per the postgame Twitter of Rick Stroud from the Tampa Bay Times, Lovie seemed to open the door to a potential return of the “Quarterback of the Future” and the quarterback of the past who is not the quarterback of the present, a quarterback he has already benched this season.

Lovie doesn’t hold back. Joe has seen Lovie scold enough reporters after asking if he is considering such-and-such player.

If Lovie responded to such a question with an open-ended answer, then hat means Glennon starting at some point over McCown before the season is done is not just some passing thought for Lovie.

Should the Mike Glennon Mob begin rejoicing?

Anyone else out there think that Lovie is a slow learner?

  2. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Too little, too late Liar Smith. You’ve made it clear where yiu stand on Glennon. No QB drafted next year = Liar Smith out of a job.

  3. cmurda Says:

TD Donald Penn. I believe after jumping into the crowd at the Black Hole I heard him say “Hi Lovie”.

  4. DallasBuc Says:

“It’s not about the future. It’s always about the future”

  5. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Marcus Mariotta in 2015!!!! Can you imagine him throwing it to Evans?? yes sir, please and thank you

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

This is BS, Lovie is just teasing me.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

I’m gonna lmao when mike glennons gonna come in and were gonna win our last three games

  8. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Our “future” is very bleak atm without a real QB. We have a real chance to change that either in FA, a trade (maybe Foles), or the draft. If we don’t get one of those we are screwed no matter who our coach is.

  9. DallasBuc Says:

Glennon seems marginally better than Trash McCown but it is the principal of not having the embarrassment of your team starting a clearly inferior talent on purpose.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

If your OK with McCown in there, you are a glutton for punishment.

  11. lightningbuc Says:

Glennon, McCown, Montana, Elway – it doesn’t matter with this clown of a head coach. They all are set up to fail. Evan Diethrich Smith rolling the ball to the QB damn near every shotgun. God, at least Gilkey had the excuse he’d never done it before.

  12. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon probably won’t win any games if he get’s in, still I’d rather see him play.

  13. Tye Says:

The Bucs future is bleak for however long Lovie is HC….. Nearly every decision he has made from day 1 has blown up in his face and hurt the Bucs….. It is foolish to believe he will suddenly make great decisions and finally understand how to be a winning HC…. Many of the knocks against him in Chicago and what got him fired, he has continued to repeat here this season…. He simply is overrated, overhyped and now overpaid!

  14. Buccfan37 Says:

Youth springs eternal. Go with the young QB, watching McCown is boring, that bulldog whippersnapper tries to no avail.

  15. Jim Says:

  16. Jim Says:

McCowns Qb Rating last 3 games
    67.3
    58.1
    64.7

Yes todays Detroit game was McCowns BEST GAME in the last 3.

  17. Ed Says:

Who Cares neither one would make the team of a real pro football team, maybe a Pop Warner team.

  18. buc4lyfe Says:

It’s more likely they’ll be a can’t miss offensive tackle or defensive end in the first round, I don’t trust any quarterback coming out this year to come in and make a difference right away. Fix your D then O line and develop a quarterback in the meantime but please get rid of mccown, trade Glennon and get a better stop gap quarterback free agent

  19. Tamparob Says:

I think McCown is in to protect Glennon so he doesn’t become David Carr- totally shell shocked from a crappy o-line. He could be totally ruined if he took those hits. Yes, McCown totally sucks and Glennon is better. But why kill your trade bait or, at best, make him afraid to stand in the pocket?

  20. buc4lyfe Says:

Glennon was killing his own trade value playing like garbage

  21. Buccfan37 Says:

I favor the stance of getting as many selections as possible in the draft. Trade down if a top 3 high pick. More is better.

  22. Capt.Tim Says:

    Blind
It was the O-line that failed us badly today.
And even they weren’t entirely at fault. How can 5 men block 7 men EVERY play.
The immobile Glennon wouldn’t have survived today, and we wouldn’t have scored a point.

Joe Montana would have lost with our piss poor play calling and schemes.
They should have replaced Tedford immediately, instead of waiting all season.

As noted by both commentators today, our scheme and play calling leaves Our QBs in a no win position. It leaves the line in unwinbable positions

Or, you can be like every driven, uneducated Horses ass- and just blame the QB.
With some of the miserable, life hating trolls around here- easy guess which way it goes

  23. Todd Says:

No keep mccown in I want mariota or winston

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

    “Drunken,uneducated horse’s ass”
    Damn phone

  25. Mike10 Says:

@cmurda hahaha – think i hear the same thing when that DE blew past Collins in the first half

  26. OB Says:

Joe I have to disagree with you, McCown is like bring a cap pistol to a gun fight, no damage just noise.

What do you think of the Rose Bowl match up and what we will see in the QBs?

  27. Gooberville Says:

Stop it Joe. Every article you write is making you look more stupid than before. Did you watch the game and the play of the ridiculoys offensive line? There an embarrassement and we should not see a single player back from this unit..

  28. BROCKTACULAR Says:

    oy.

  29. Mike10 Says:

Going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali

  30. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Offensive line coach should be fired, nobody mentions him. He’s had plenty of time and it’s evedent he’s a POS

  31. lurker Says:

needed to draft a qb last year. now it is a necessity!

  32. Nybucsfan Says:

They both stink. Time to draft a QB if we win now it hurts us bad sad but true

  33. Bucfan4life Says:

I love all the Glennon lovers out there. He sucks! Neither of these guys is starting caliber material and no QB could play well in this situation with no OC and horrible o-line. Glennon will be given away for a 6th or 7th round pick and McCown will be here to help groom the QB we draft. The Glazers will force Lovie to draft a QB to save the fan base and sell tix. Those of you that think we should bring back the most immobile QB in the league to play behind this horrible line are just being ridiculous!

  34. jo_mama Says:

Can’t wait for Glennon to Leave Tampa and be a success somewhere else.

  35. Bucfan4life Says:

Lol jomama there is a reason we will get at best a 6th rounder for Glennon. He is a back up and other teams know this.

    Mike10 Says:

@cmurda hahaha – think i hear the same thing when that DE blew past Collins in the first half

Lol Mike, you’re right Collins was ineffective today. Of course it’s hard to be effective when you’re injured and back in Tampa and not on the field. Lol!!!

  36. Mike10 Says:

oooo snap… then I’ll say he was “negligibly less effective” “back in Tampa not on the field”

  37. tgreg Says:

@ Lurker Oh please tell…which QB form the draft is lighting up the NFL? Manziel, Bortles? Oh no it’s Carr…LOL

But I am unsure whether Lovie is the consummate liar or just stupid

  38. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    Jameis.

  39. Trubucfan22 Says:

They all suck. Doesn’t matteR who plays. Each qb has a grand total of 1 win each. Play whoever is going to be on the roster next year. If Glennon is going to be traded away, then don’t hurt his trade value by showing him looking stupid on the field. Let him sit and hope someone is dumb enough to trade for him. If Mccown is not coming Back next season and they stick with Glennon as a Long term back up then Play Glennon. Both qb suck beyond all comprehension. So as a buc fan it doesn’t really matter neither are worth fighting for. They equally are intolerable to watch.

  40. lion Says:

I sure hope the Glazers force Lovie to draft a QB with our 1st rounder pick, as I am not sure Lovie would do such a move on his on accord. I”m sure Licht will want a QB as well..

  41. Mord Says:

Now that we’re fully in draft-pick mode, I have an ‘old guy’-eyeball-test gut feeling that Mariota will be the better NFL QB.

Winston has tantalizing skills, but an aura of NFL flame-out around him.

And regardless, if the Glazers don’t make it clear that it’s QB pickin’ time, this team might as well start marketing tickets to visiting teams’ home cities.

  42. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Glennon should have never been benched. Mariota with the 2nd pick.

  43. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Sad part is if the Titans do keep the #1 pick they’ll probably trade for more picks.

  44. BirdDoggers Says:

It won’t make a difference who’s playing QB behind the line Lovie built. Might as well switch back to Glennon though. What’s the wrst that can happen? Another loss?

  45. Mord Says:

If Glennon plays, the worst that could happen is we accidentally win some useless games with a QB that will only be a career backup, and in doing so, lose the options that come with the better draft position.

Sucks to think, but this team has nothing but a near-retirement career-backup and a young career-backup at the QB position. And this really is a decent year to have a top pick.

No schadenfreude intended to the MGM mob, but IMO, Glennon could have a nice career holding clipboards and wearing baseball caps for a lot of different teams before he’s done — and yet I just can’t see him as a franchise QB anywhere.. and I’m not ignoring the suckiness of our current O-line as a factor in saying so.

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Mike might win one game. Putting him in would be a huge mistake.

  47. Capt.Tim Says:

“Mr.Checkdown” has no ability to make downfield throws. Will disenchant Our star young rookie receiver.
    McCown starts because
    1) he’s mobile
    2) has a great long ball
    3) doesn’t panic in pocket

    All traits Glennon doesnt possess

  48. tgreg Says:

Ah yes. McClown was indeed stellar today

  49. Walter White Says:

You guys remember those little kids toys where you pull the string and it spins an arrow around to an animal and makes the sound that animal makes? I think that’s what Lovie uses to come up with his “gameplan.”

    “The cow says… moooooo!”

  50. Another J Says:

Someone actually said McCown doesn’t panic in the pocket, LMAO!

  51. Paul Says:

haha, that guy said mcclown doesn’t panic in the pocket

  52. Paul Says:

didn’t mcclown already throw an “eyes closed” int this year?

  53. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

This Bucs team will be .500 next season with mariota as the Qb. The running game will be better because of his threat to scramble but the passing game will suffer causing Evans to look like he is regressing. Mariota will scramble when he should throw causing a wide open Evans to get frustrated on the sidelines and prompting some people here to say that he has a bad attitude. Winston is the best and safest choice to make and you all should no this. You won’t win alot of games scoring 30+ points with mariota but you will be better with great defense, special teams and a running game. But when the defenses start to bottle the pocket taking away his scrambling the offense will look like it does now. Winston would be good for the running game and would keep Evans and the rest of the receivers involved. C’mon people you see it, I know you do

  54. lurker Says:

    @tgreg

yeppers…any one of bortles, bridgewater, carr is waaaaayyy better than what we have here for qb.

  55. Fort Myers Dave Says:

So say the Bucs use the top pick in the draft on Mariota or Winston even though there is still a chance they bungle that up with an upset over NO or Carolina as it is exactly the worst thing the franchise can do and that is usually what happens here in Tampa then everyone will want the Bucs to give up the rest of next springs draft to move up 2 spots and get their guy ala Ricky Williams, smart, ask Ditka how that went…. But for argument sake lets just say they tank the next 3 to cinch it, not unreasonable; so where do you get the bodies to protect this franchise investment? You sure as hell are not going to get it via the free agency route, no one gives up on a proven LT or RT. Try to trade for OL help :yeah that Mankins deal is working out well, sure hope some of his buddies bet on the Rams in week 2…. So its obvious that picks 2, 3 and 4 in the Bucs draft should be; 2nd round: best available G (probably one of the top 2 or 3 as they stay on the board longer than OTs so that the available OTs will all have some flaw which kept them out of the 1st round either physical or character). Third round: a new center and Fourth Round an OT that slips down the board somehow to be waiting for the Bucs at the start of day 3 (Bucs may not pick 1st day 3 if 2 or more other teams have 2-14 records which is possible from the Jags, Jets Raiders, and Titans though the Jags play both TN and NYJ..). That will help but I doubt Lovie is going to devote a 2nd draft totally devoted to offense, you know the guy is itching to get another hand in the defensive trenches to help GMC but maybe there the help can be had via FA. I’m still for trading down out of the top spot with someone like the Jets or Deadskins who will give up a lot to move up 2, 3, or 4 spots to get their qb giving Tampa more picks to fill obvious holes….. Maybe someone like the Giants offer even more to move down to the 6-10 area in the draft; Eli has been long in the tooth lately. Just my $0.02, which is about what the Bucs OL is currently worth….

  56. Bucfan4life Says:

L David is hurt. McCoy is hurt. They need to be shut down for the year. Lovie and Licht need to sit down and decide the best way to tank the last 3 but not make it too obvious. That is not intended as sarcasm either. There are 4 other teams with two wins and the Bucs cannot win one more game and free fall out of the top spots. The Bucs have a chance to change the long term future of this team and one more meaningless win could ruin all of that. I would be ecstatic to see Kafka announced as the starter next week.

  57. Bob in Valrico Says:

While watching FSU play the other day I found it concerning that Jimbo Fisher
had to tell Winston to let me call the plays.I have watched him force a lot of balls this year. My pick would be Mariotta

  58. pick6 Says:

the tape will show lovie that the only time mccown was able to deliver a ball downfield is when he rolled out of the pocket. the argument for glennon makes plenty of sense if you ignore the fact that it is impossible to deliver a ball from the pocket with this OL. Mccown is in there because a) stationary QBs will die behind this OL, and b) the bucs are hoping against hope that 14 years of being a backup has taught josh how to make an adjustment or two in protection pre-snap. i am one of those who sees no point in josh mccown’s buc career continuing in any fashion, but i’m not sure that mike glennon starting will mean anything other than lots of images of mike glennon sandwiched between the turf and some 300 pound dude

  59. ItsDookie87 Says:

I think Capt Tim is smoking crack. I think his mobility has been overstated and is overrated. It honestly feels like the only difference in the mobility of Glennon and McCown is the appearance. Glennon just looks worse but the results are basically the same. McCowns deep ball is throwing it up to Evans and Jackson and letting them come back for the ball to make a play. If that’s what you call great then you’ve set your standards rock bottom low. You fail to remember that Evans broke out in Glennons last game and then rode that for a couple games with McCown. Last, what is your idea of not panicking in the pocket? I’ve seen him throw ducks off his back foot, roll out of a clean pocket into pressure and pull the ball down and run into the back of his OLine until a defender brings him down for the sack. McCown is honestly a rookie in a 35 year olds body.

  60. Capt.Tim Says:

After this season- I should be smoking crack!
