Lovie Says Collins Will Play, Verner is Out

It's official: another baseball-hat day for Alterraun Verner.

It’s official: another baseball-hat gameday for Alterraun Verner.

Oh, no.

Joe’s going to have to make another beer run.

Speaking during his weekly, cozy pregame video chat with Buccaneers.com, Lovie Smith revealed that Pro Bowl cornerback Alterraun Verner will miss his second consecutive game on Sunday in Washington.

Verner’s bad hamstring had him limited in practice this week.

On the upside (maybe), Lovie said left tackle Anthony Collins “will be able to go this week.” He’s missed the last two games with a foot injury.

Lovie said Verner and Doug Martin were the only two players he expected to miss the game with an injury. That means ghostly Michael Johnson is feeling better.

Jay Gruden must really be salivating about now. That Bucs secondary is awfully shaky.

Is Alterraun Verner good or something? Has he done anything this year? What am I missing?

  2. DallasBuc Says:

There is an upside to the likelihood that Anthony Collins “will be able to go this week”? Don’t you want the Bucs to win? Every time you see these dreadful LovieDove&Co FAs suit up it proves they aren’t even trying to win football games.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Bench Collins anyway!!!

I’m going to join that daily fantasy thing this weekend, draft a team, trade everyone not named Bruce Gradkowski for DeSawn Jackson, then wager my car on it.

  5. Ray Rice Says:

Great!Another week I doing get to see Verner get burned for a long TD. This guy has been a total bust of a signing too. Crezdon Butler played better than him last week. No loss if he sits. Only loss is the $ coming out of the Glazers bank account.

  6. Ray Rice Says:

    don’t ***

  7. Buc1987 Says:

Collins will be there and on the field, but he certainly won’t be playing.

  8. Jason Says:

Why can’t we put Collins at guard (like he did sometimes in Cincinnati) and keep our current LT there?

  9. Pelbuc Says:

JBF, Am I missing something? Verner has been a total bust along with MJ, EDS, Collins, Cousins, Mankins and virtually each and every FA acquisition of L&L. These guys spent lots more money to become a worse football team. That’s why I don’t see a very bright future under Lovie and no reason to be patient again. When Ronde Barber critiqued the defense and stated it wasn’t that hard to learn, it made 2 things very clear, the players are dumb and lazy and the coaches don’t know how to coach, something that’s been on display every Sunday. I keep saying that if the Glazers are gonna keep Lovie after this year, they should strip him of all personnel decisions and hire a draft guru.

If there is one position that the average fan is absolutely clueless in evaluating…it’s cornerback.

Verner has been BY FAR our best defensive back this year. Nobody else has been good at all outside of two good games by Banks. It was the same story last year when nobody thought Revis was playing well until he got an interception….then after the season it was “WAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! How could you get rid of Revis! Our lord and savior Darrelle Revis!? WAHHHHH!”

We have ZERO pass rush. Nobody can play man corner with ZERO pass rush. Even Richard Sherman and Darrelle Revis get burned folks. Verner has been just fine.

  11. Brian D. Says:

Not to mention Verner has been the only player that I can even think of making a nice hit…any time they throw a screen to his side, he’s money.

  12. Patrick in VA Says:

I feel like I should be more upset about this than I am. Part of me knows that we had a much better chance of winning with Verner in, but then that bigger part is pretty sure we didn’t have a chance anyway. Largely because the redskins employ professional football players and that’s proven to be our hubris thus far this year

  13. Ed Says:

There have been quite a few offensive push-offs where Verner had good coverage and the receivers held their hands out to shield him and they made the catch with no flag for offensive interference.

This season there have been some totally atrocious flags thrown on Bucs db’s .

  14. Bucnnole Says:

Anyone but Cousins. He is GARBAGE

  15. DallasBuc Says:

^^^Cousins has completely outplayed Anthony DJMoneyman Collins in the last two games he was out nursing his bruised ego. This whole team is a joke top to bottom. The sadness becomes more unspeakable week to week

  16. jay Says:

Crezdon Butler was a great college cornerback, and could possibly be better than verner. He just had so many injuries that he hasnt been able to display skill. Banks is the best db, and should cover the top wr every game

  17. B.D Says:

I will be there, maybe a bag over my head,..(should be Plasic the way they are playing!)

  18. B.D Says:

sorry, should be plastic the way they are playing) see even the fans cant do anything right!

  19. B.D Says:

its a new keyboard,.. the sun was in my eyes…it wasnt my fault.. I have a hangnail.. its a new system.. honest!!

  20. BucTrooper Says:

People questions the Bucs’ depth. I disagree…. they are VERY deep. There’s literally no drop-off between the starters and the 4th stringers.
