Mike Glennon: No. 3 QB In NFC South?

November 11th, 2014
Bucs QB Mike Glennon may be having a better year than Stinking Panthers QB Cam Newton.

Mike Glennon may be having a better year than Stinking Panthers QB Cam Newton.

Joe has always maintained that if you have the fourth-best quarterback in the division, you have no quarterback and an upgrade is required. That’s if a team has serious aspirations of playing meaningful football deep into January.

Well, not only do the Bucs have two QBs (when you have two, you have none), Josh McCown and quarterback of the future and quarterback of the past (twice) but not the quarterback of the present Mike Glennon. In a division with Drew Brees, Matty Ice and Cam Newton, you better be looking for an upgrade or you are just conning fans.

Well, maybe the Bucs may not need much of an upgrade. It seems, perhaps, the Bucs have the No. 3 quarterback in the division, yet he is benched. That would be Glennon.

After last night’s debacle between the Stinking Panthers and the Eagles, Newton, a former No. 1 pick overall, is having an awful year. He has 10 touchdown passes and eight interceptions in nine games.

Glennon, in six games, has 10 touchdowns and six picks.

One could argue Glennon is having a season as good as Newton’s and probably a bit better.

So why the hell is Glennon on the bench?

The conversation that ensues from this article is going to be mind numbing

  2. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

To the title of this article I say, SHUT UP!

    Again, STFU

  4. NewTampaChris Says:

You just killed any hope of avoiding another McCown v Glennon snoozefest with Duemig.

  5. Espo Says:

Am I the only one who thinks Matt Ryan is overrated? I mean, he’s better than our scrubs, but I just don’t see the legend that is Matty Ice. Newton has all the tools but can’t seem to string together good seasons.

  6. OB Says:

Could he be the pretty girl wearing glasses at the dance that is a wallflower? Until he is asked, he can’t dance.

Maybe if Lovie had a real OC, we would have a real QB?

  7. DB55 Says:

    Haters are going to hate!

Facts people, deal with it. 10-6 vs 4-6. TD to int ratio.

I’m trying hard not to bash mccown but there’s no way he’ll make it another 6 games. I don’t think he can taking the pounding.

  8. Old Bill Says:

Glennon would be far worse on that panthers offense than Cam would be on the bucs, we have talent just nobody with talent to get them the baall, don’t make me quote Raheem Joe…haha

  9. bucrightoff Says:

Cam is absurdly overrated. Carolina ideally signs him to a 7 year $150 million extension with $100 million guaranteed. We can only hope.

  10. biff barker Says:

Lovie is trying to bail out the ship Joe. He’s desperate for a win.

  11. DB55 Says:

Lovie needs to take over offensive playcalling duties. Laughable I know but he needs to take control of this situation before it last well into the offseason.

  12. Bannor Says:

[Joe is responsible for what is on this board, including unfounded rumors of criminal activity. — Joe]

    what the hell?????

  15. Patrickbucs Says:

If you guys can’t see that he is clearly hurt not sure what to tell you. He’s not running the ball anymore. Glennon sucks and so does McKown, let’s please get over this ridiculous debate .

  16. bucrightoff Says:

Sorry but Cam has had Freeman levels of accuracy almost all season. It’s not that he’s hurt, it’s that he’s not that good. Last year they were an outstanding 26th in total offense. That’s incredible for us since we’re 31st or 32nd best, but it’s still not good at all. He’s not a franchise QB, he’s Andy Dalton with fewer playoff appearances. I hope to all hell they badly overpay him.

  17. Rob Says:

You’re an idiot Joe. You need to take a vacation.

  18. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

The comparisons are fair. If you look at Glennon’s stats compared to RGIII last year Glennon was slightly better.

    Completion %:
    Newton: 58.1
    Glennon: 57.6

    TD/INT:
    Newton: 10-8
    Glennon: 10-6

    Yards Gained Per Pass Attempt:
    Newton: 7.1
    Glennon: 7.0

    Yards per Pass Completion:
    Newton: 12.2
    Glennon: 12.1

    Yards per Game:
    Newton: 233.3
    Glennon: 236.2

    Rating:
    Newton: 80.1
    Glennon: 83.3

    QBR:
    Newton: 47.84
    Glennon: 55.95

In short, by just about every statistical measure Mike Glennon is as good as Cam Newton in some areas and better at others.

  19. Not Glennon Says:

    Please stop the madness

  20. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Yup Newton is the type of QB a lot of fans here are clamouring for…makes plays (good and bad) but relies too much on athleticism to get him by. The truly elite QB’s have a knack for making good decisions most all of the time and do so from within the pocket. And yes Matt Ryan is a bit overrated as well. Brees is head and shoulders better than the rest of the NFC South QB’s.

  21. MTM Says:

Comparing Newton and McGlennon this year is like comparing dog sh*t and horse sh*t. At the end of the day it still sh&t and ones a bigger pile!

  22. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

If you guys can’t see that he is clearly hurt not sure what to tell you. He’s not running the ball anymore.

OK, so the conclusion from your statement is that without his ability to run Cam Newton is not better than Mike Glennon. Heck, you may be on to something. This is his 4th season and he still stares down receivers.

  23. Trubucfan22 Says:

Who is cam newton throwing the ball to? Exactly. Nothing to see here folks, joes just blowing steam up glennon’s butt.

Once again the mgm wants to talk about their precious TD/int ratio. Sorry fellas but not throwing picks doesn’t make you a great qb. Please put up his third down conversion rate. That’s where games are won or lost. Can you sustain a drive and give your defense a rest? I could give 2 turds if Glennon has decent yardage (mostly in garbage time)

  24. Zam Says:

A healthy Newton is way better. That guy is BEAT UP. Ribs, thumb, ankle, it’s painful to watch him.

Two thirds of the league have QB’s with 90+ passer rating. Not Glennon. When did we start accepting mediocre is okay? That’s how we’re in this mess.

  25. Snook Says:

Carolina won the division in 2013 with the 3rd best QB in the division.

Cam sucks. Glad I’m not in Carolina’s position to have to pay him after next season. Overrated diva.

  26. BucTrooper Says:

I have no sympathy for Cam’s struggles. He irritated me from the get-go with his stupid “Superman” routine. I’m glad that the bloom is coming off the rose.

  27. SAMCRO Says:

Jameis Newton and Cam Winston quintessentially the same player.

  28. Buddha Says:

I have been saying for some time that at least two of the quarterbacks in the NFC South are overrated and not e”elite”–Matt Ryan and Cam Newton. This will be Newton’s third of four seasos in which he finishes with a losing record–hardly elite. He is not a leader and he does not make other players around him better. Neither does Ryan, who benefited from having a Hall-of-Fame tight end. Ryan is 7-17 in his last 24 games. Even Brees appears to be showing signs of wear. He has made decision-making errors that cost the Saints at least three games this year.

  29. Buddha Says:

Oh, and by the way, wait another year or two and you can Cam in Free Agency. I can’t see the cheap Panthers paying him 100 million dollars based on his stats and performance–to say nothing of his immaturity.

  30. thegregwitul Says:

Cam Newton has been terrible this season, just flat out terrible. He has all the tools, but I don’t know if he’ll ever truly be a great QB. If it wasn’t for the Bucs, the Panthers dumpster fire of a season would be the underachieving story of the season.

  31. bucs4lyfe Says:

what are you smoking today JOE seriously your really scraping the bottom of the barrel for news this year!!! how could glennon even be considered the third best qb nevermind the fact that your foolishly picking glennon over cam newton of all people but they guy just got benched for josh mccown so how can he be the third best when there are 4 starting quarterbacks in this division. he’s not even better than josh mccown says his status as backup

  32. Gooberville Says:

Let it go Joe. Glennon sucks that’s why he’s on the bench. Your logic is comical.. Just because another QB sucks (I’ve always thought Cam was overrated) that doesn’t mean another one that only sucks slightly less should be starting. You need a vacation Joe cause you continue to beat a dead horse. Let it go..

  33. DB55 Says:

    Joe

Tim wright sucks so does Zuttah barron Revis and everyone else Lovie benched or got rid of. If Lovie thinks they suck then hey why would facts matter?

  34. Tiny Tim Says:

This has to be the dumbest article I have read on this site. What is even more troubling is the legion of glennon mob members buying and believing this garbage. And we wonder why the national media laugh at Tampa fans. Exhibit A

  35. Nick2 Says:

For some reason, just like McKown Glennon has no composure in the 4th quarter when defenses turn up the heat. He gets sacked, throws picks and can I say chokes? To me its probably a coaching issue, with Arroyo busy calling plays there isn’t a calming influence that a QB coach would have brought so both players are basically wilting under pressure. We are 1-8 predominantly because of our QB play. Only one game can you say a QB won for us and that was Glennon and Pittsburgh beyond that its been choke city!!

  36. Nybucsfan Says:

Glennon sucks. Get over it. this Glennon crap is a joke he sucks he is a back up

  37. Soggy Says:

Compared to all the other QB’s Glennon has only played a handful of games, thats better than having a QB with years of games and still sucks.. So I guess glennon has a better record.. glennon has did his backup job pretty good he is just the backup but how can lovie not want somebody better than mcCown and now benched glennon..

  38. Nybucsfan Says:

NFL live has the bucs drafting Carr on the draft do over because our QB’s suck Glennon is a terrible QB

  39. bucrightoff Says:

Guess what? Carr sucks too. He had 26 pass attempts against Denver…for 96 yards. Yup, would only take 75 attempts to get close to 300 yards.

  40. D-Rome Says:

Guess what? Carr sucks too. He had 26 pass attempts against Denver…for 96 yards. Yup, would only take 75 attempts to get close to 300 yards.

He and any other drafted “franchise quarterback” would be terrible behind this offensive line with this play calling. Do any of you pining for Mariota or Winston actually think they could be better than McCown or Glennon behind this line and with this play calling?

If the Bucs drafted Johnny Football this year or Derek Carr they both would have sucked.

  41. bucrightoff Says:

Derek Carrs YPA is the lowest in the NFL since (drumroll please….)…..Blaine Gabbert. Yeah, he pretty much sucks. No one should be surprised at all if the Raiders take a QB. If Carr shows no improvement the 2nd half of the year, the Raiders will be taking a QB with their first pick.

  42. Terry4505 Says:

And given his style of play, when can we expect to see a healthy Cam again?

Guys who run, break down. Period.

    How’s Kaepernics year going?

I may be in the extreme minority here, but I wouldn’t touch Jameis Winston with a 10-foot pole.

  43. Aceofaerospace Says:

Easy call then. Trade Glennon to Carolina for cam newton and Carolina’s 3rd round pick. (I have seen more bizarre trades).

  44. Dave Pear Says:

Trade Doug Martin and Mike Glennon to Cleveland for Johnny Manziel.
Straight up. Reunite Evans and Manziel.
    Let’s get this party started.
Jon “The Quarterback Whisperer” Gruden begged Oakland to draft Manziel so he could be his coach next year and Jerry “The Genius GM” is still upset that the Cowboys didn’t draft him. What have we got to lose. Two bench warmers?

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’d say this……Cam Newton……#1 overall pick
    Mike Glennon….third round

    Glennon is a better value.

There is a lesson that should be obvious here….just because the QB is picked high doesn’t mean he is a “francise” QB……sometimes yes…but usually not.

Jury is still out on RG3……look what Wash gave up for him

Its not where you pick….its who!!!

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I say we trade, even up. And I didn’t even read the article. 😉

  47. bucrightoff Says:

If there’s one thing Jon Gruden is great at (Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski, Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, Rob Johnson, Tim Rattay etc…), well, it doesn’t involve QBs. If Gruden has a hard on for Manziel, it almost certainly means Manziel has career backup ahead of him. Based off the list provided, those are Gruden’s kind of guys.

  48. RealityCheck Says:

@Dave Pear – Do you know how trades work?

  49. Dave Pear Says:

I realize it is to late to trade this season. Am I missing something else? I was talking about next season.

  50. Dave Pear Says:

    @RealityCheck,
It seems a lot of people are already talking about who our next HC, OC, DC etc. is going to be I was just throwing something against the wall to see if it would stick. I think Manziel, if nothing else, would bring a lot of media attention and excitement to the Tampa Bay Area and who knows, could turn out to be the newest version of Fran Tarkenton. Who knows? I am just a life long fan who would like to see a winner again.

  51. Skyline Crew Says:

    Manziel.sucks. Backup!

  52. Dave Pear Says:

And you know this how? You’re some kind of expert? I doubt it seriously.

  53. Skyline Crew Says:

He sucks because he is a backup. He isn’t good enough to start.

  54. jh Says:

Joe this constant Glennon BS is getting old.

  55. Dave Pear Says:

Hmmm…by that logic Aaron Rodgers sucked because he was a backup? The list of HOF QB’s that started as backups is endless. That is not really a good argument.

  56. Nybucsfan Says:

I’m just say the people that get payed for the opinion. Think Glennon suck. That’s because he does he stinks when your behind a 35 year old back up you suck. The MGM needs to get over it he stinks

  57. buc4lyfe Says:

    Mike Glennon Mob

Cocaine is a hell of a drug and your on it hard. You’re trying to say mike Glennon the guy benched for josh mccown because he came hit open receivers compared to cam Newton?

The same dude who that’s scared to throw downfield? The but that throws 20+ plus passes in the first half of games only to have like 55 yards? Take a look and see who the most hit qb, the most sacked in the league then look at second place and you’ll see who’s most rushed by far. Their line is horrible too but how many wins does Glennon have in his career, how many big passing games, how many league leading stats, how many rushing first downs lol, how many playoff victories. You idiots are saying you would take Glennon over Newton… Damn the money they make, that’s just almost racist to act like oppie is better than a franchise quarterback…… Why is no one comparing their stats of last year? Because it’s am embarrassing comparison

  58. mveal2006 Says:

and tim tebow is better than both of these guys. look at the won loss record. and newton couldn’t beat out tebow at florida so he left.
so until I see tebow at qb for the bucs, I see a con job by the bucs ownership/management.
and Winston may be better than tebow but you cant give the keys to the franchise to guys with as many issues as jameis has.
    what a needless mess

  59. Trubucfan22 Says:

Does anyone really think Glennon is better than Marriott or Winston? You kids would have to be crazy to believe such foolishness. Even behind the current bucs o line, nearly any QB would be better than Glennon. Glennon is terrible under pressure. While nearly any starting QB can manage it just fine. Sure no QB wants to get hit, but they don’t panic the way Glennon does. Yes this o line is bad. But McCown showed on Sunday that a little elusiveness in the backfield can make a huge difference. McCown did something Glennon could not behind this o line. McCown is a 35 year old man with average athleticism. Now just imagine what a 23 year old kid can do with above average athleticism…. It’s a not brainer. Glennon might be good at playing catch with no defender in his face, but he isn’t a good QB. He just can’t handle and avoid any kind of pass rush.

  60. Kaput Says:

Dumbest article ever written on this site.

  61. ToesOnTheLine Says:

“You idiots are saying you would take Glennon over Newton… Damn the money they make, that’s just almost racist to act like oppie is better than a franchise quarterback…”

And almost like clockwork we get the racially motivated insinuations…smh. If it makes you feel any better that not everything is about race I think Sam Bradford is an over-hyped, underperforming (for the #1 pick) QB as well…just like Cam Newton.

  62. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

You guys calling for Tebow and Manziel must be kids. They both suck and don’t play.

  63. BoJim Says:

    ___________________________________________________

Just went back and looked at their stats. Are you ready for this. Through 13 games they are pretty much the same stats. Newton comes out on top in yardage because he played 16 games, but if you reduce it to the 13 that Glennon played they are the same. Glennon avg. 200 yds a game and Newton avg. 211 a game. Passing percentage? Newton 61.7% and Glennon was at 59.4%. So no I wouldn’t say it is an embarrassing comparison, well maybe for Newton it is. It was wishful thinking though on your part.
