Mike Glennon Is Getting Shell Shocked

October 31st, 2014

When Joe was a kid, before he knew what a two-hole was or even how to hold a football properly, Joe learned something about football from his old man that was as true then as it is in 2014. “It’s hard for a quarterback to throw the ball when he’s on his arse.”

There have been strange calls from former Bucs who make a living in the TV industry, those who have called for Tampa Bay starting quarterback Mike Glennon, the Bucs’ quarterback of the future, to be benched for turnover machine Josh McCown.

This perplexes Joe. And Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune details why the thought of parking Glennon over his play the past couple of weeks is misplaced. Why? See Joe’s dad’s axiom, above.

“Protecting the quarterback, that’s biggest thing for any offensive lineman, because you never want to see your quarterback get rattled in the pocket or take those licks,” right tackle Demar Dotson said. “We as a group take a lot of pride in not letting our quarterback get hit, but lately we haven’t been successful. We haven’t been good enough, not by any shape, form or fashion. Five sacks in one game — that can’t happen.”

The fact it happened against the Ravens and Vikings might have something to do with the slide. The Vikings and Ravens rank among the top half of the league in sacks, the Vikings third overall with 25 sacks and the Ravens with 17.

The Bucs, though, believe the slip in protection is mostly a result of their own play. Several linemen said the problem goes beyond those things that can be tweaked in practice, such as technique and assignment.

Yeah, at this point, not a whole lot can be done. John Hannah and Dan Dierdorf are not physically able to return to the NFL.

Oh, and this just in: There is a very real possibility Oneil Cousins could start at left tackle Sunday at Cleveland for the hobbled Anthony Collins.

So for Joe, it is hard to knock Glennon when the man has little time to throw the ball.

That won’t stop a ton of bozos from knocking him though. It’s like all the people that like to knock the president for the failings of the government. It’s easier to find one guy to blame it all on rather than learning how all the moving pieces work and realizing the roles that everyone has in the failure. It helps to hope for brighter days when all you have to fix is this one guy that’s messing it all up. Reality is a tough place to live for some people

  2. Architek Says:

    Winston for President!!

  3. MTM Says:

    @Patrick VA

    Well said.

Most of Glennon’s issues seem fixable accept mobility. Glennon should be practicing rolling out and throwing on the run. You don’t get better at something by never working on it. The O-line is a sive.

  4. phil Says:

We should be doing everything we can to get Jameis Winston as quarterback. Of course we still have to get rid of our idiot coach.

  5. flmike Says:

    Jameis WInston == JaMarcus Russell
The first moronic or worse yet criminal thing that moron does while getting paid millions will alienate your fan base…

  6. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

Your pops is spot on. It all starts up front. We lack the nasty.

  7. SteveK Says:

Our o-line has got to be better than this, right?

  8. SteveK Says:

The Bucs should hire bill Romanowski as the consultant of “nasty”.

  9. SteveK Says:

    Phil,

Jameis is tough. Can he block for himself? If not, it could be another waste of a top pick by the Bucs.

  10. SAMCRO Says:

That’s why I advocate that he be benched. Not because Glennon is struggling, but because he is a true pocket passer and will take a lot of punishment, because of the nature of his game. He is by far, as a second year QB, a better passer than McCown, but when reduced to scrabbling for his life on just about every single play, it has to affect his mental state, and makes him antsy, and lose focus on the strengths of his game.

I call it “The David Carr Syndrome”. This can have a snowballing effect on his future career, by how he is perceived by his peers. To many judge a QB on their on-field success and don’t take into consideration the situation a QB had to endure. “Shell shock” can do irreparable damage on the psyche, and future longevity of any young QB. Throwing Glennon to the wolves is in no-way a good measuring stick to evaluate his Buc future.

He will never recover from the mistakes he will undoubtedly incur, especially when put into a situation where it is impossible to succeed. Let the veteran ride out the storm, and if the O-line begins to protect by seasons end, give Glennon a chance to showcase his skills and be evaluated fairly on an even playing field. That’s the only way we can get a true evaluation.

  11. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

I’m one to support any Bucs QB. I’m not a mob member. But watching Glennon throw long passes is like playing the lottery. Most of the time the passes are ready to hit the defender in the back. But sometimes the passes are on the money.

After seen the performance last week, I’m just not feeling confident on this 2nd year starter. In his pass that was intercepted he look like he really wanted to run out of bounds when the receiver was wide open waiting for the long pass. By the time he threw the ball defender had time to turn around a catch the ball that hit him in the numbers. Then you have the play when he is running out of bounds again and this time he has no idea where the reachable 1st down marker was. I think he was playing without his contact lenses.

With Cousins coming back into the picture we really need a mobile QB in there. I know McCown’s 1st 3 games were awful but the way we are playing I’m hoping McCown can still learn from his mistakes and revive his 2013 spark.

I know we are not going anywhere this year but at least I would like to enjoy some football action from this offense. Another game like last week and I have grounds to sue Mike Glennon for pain and suffering.

  12. Skyline Crew Says:

Glennon led us to a win last week and the D gave it away. Glennon gave us an 11 pt lead over the Saints and the D gave it away. The kid can win if the D could stop anything. And for the love of God protect him for 2-3 seconds.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m looking for a standout game from Glennon and a win would be great.

  14. BoJim Says:

If only there was was someway to protect him.

Draft ANY QB and he will be running for his life on just about every play. We need some real earth movers up front and quickly.

  15. bucrightoff Says:

And as a reward for being destroyed by the OLine, Glennon gets perhaps the worst offensive lineman in the league, Oneil Cousins, to possibly block for him this week. I’m sure he’s thrilled

  16. billy buckaroo Says:

The offense line hasnt been able to protect much all year yet they RARELY call any quick hit pass plays.
If the line can only protect 2 seconds then why continually call long route passes.
I am beginning to wonder a couple of things?

Are they calling quick hit plays and the receivers are just not getting open and doing a poor job or are the coordinators just not calling those kind of plays and if so-why not?
If the line is only going to give you limited time then the plays called have to match the time frame given
Play calling doesnt seem to be matching the personnel or the time frame capabilities they have as a unit

  17. Bannor Says:

wait until captain dump off starts forcing the ball when he realizes that his starting job is contingent on him making plays.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

    Poor Mike!
Nobody’s Halloween should be that scary!!
He just thought he was shell shocked!!!
Just Wait til Oniel” the human rutabaga” Cousins is guarding his blindside.

He’s gonna get blown up more ofter than London during the WW2!!!
Kid might be a player- if he had a great line, and great running game.
    But he don’t.

Go easy on the Candy tonight Mike.
Gotta save room for all that turf you’ll be swallowing Sunday!
    Good luck!

  19. Razor123 Says:

An analogy comparing MG8 to BHO? I don’t think anyone is laying the collapse of The Bucs at Glennons feet, the country on the other hand, the fish rots from the head down.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

i have never witnessed so many people defend and make up excuse after excuse to justify horrid performances by an average backup qb. I actually nominated Joe Bucs Fan for the Nobel Prize for Mathematics for all the creative and new math formulas the mob uses to defend the leader of the worst offense last year and this year. 32 out of 32 is still 32 out of 32 no matter how creative the math is. The bucs will go nowhere with the heartless backup known as Glennon starting. After wimping out and going out of bounds the way he did on that 3rd down play; he proved who is with that single play. enough is enough… Bye Bye 8 next!

I am just as consistent disliking 8 as the delusional ones who support him blindly. 8 is not the ansewer wake up Tampa!

The bottom line is the bucs do not have an NFL caliber QB on the roster and will not win until they do so.

Draft Winston and sign Saint Ritchie….

  21. Robert 9 Says:

    our LT is out.

    BWAH, HAHAHAHAHAHAH

just when you thought it could not get any worse.

this team is a trainwreck, and gets worse every year. I used to come on enthusiastically. now I just look to see the disaster. sooner or later you get numb to it, and as long as you don’t waste your sundays on it, it’s pretty damn funny.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Patrick in VA

Thanks for a well thought out post.

tmaxcon There may be some really good players in the penitentiary who are due to get out soon. Richie the Scum Incognito? You have NO pride dude.
You have would have us draft the leader of ISIS if he could move the football.

Football is entertainment! Yes winning is more entertaining. But not if your city is represented by pathological scumbag bullies like Richie Incognito. Why do you suppose this “super talent” is still out of work?

If the Bucs go down your road and draft immature spoiled rotten brats like “Famous’ or is it “Infamous” Jameis Winston and an absolute PUNK like Richie the Pig…I dump my Bucs support and go back to the team I grew up with the Bengals. Nope that won’t work either because of the thugs the Bengals have had to endure a few years back. They’re still trying to repair their image.

If we get the losers some are calling for here I can only be very thankful I’m a Lightning fan!!!

These people REPRESENT our fair burg. Richie the pig is representative of Tampa? Well alas he represents some. Nothing like a bully eh. As long as he’s 300+ pounds, roided out and can beat up folks.

  23. ander Says:

can oneil cousins really do much worst than anthony collins?? possibly now thats a disaster

pic six gave them 7 more.offense needs to move ball more consistantly in first half to keep defense more rested.no one is blameless for their first half ineptitude.
playcalling, lack of run game, mistakes by most of players on the offense. bottom
line the offense needed one more score in regulation to win.

And much like Glennon and Obama, those people that were stupid enough to support them in the first place are great at make excuses of why the job isn’t getting done. Glennon is no Obama though, I don’t like Glennon, but comparing Obama to him is a slap in the face to Glennon. If Obama was an NFL QB he would be Jay Cutler. A talented and seemingly capable hack with no heart that has severely worn out his welcome with poor performances, bad decisions, and no vision.

  26. Brandon Says:

tmaxcon-Your Glennon diatribe has been heard and approved…not so much on Saint Ritchie.

As for all realistic Bucs fans that know Glennon isn’t the answer… here is a dilemma.

Some people want Mariota, others want Winston…myself, I’d take either, though I prefer Mariota… but here is the dilemma. Mariota comes to Tampa and he’ll probably want his #8, Winston comes to the Bucs and he wants #5. Does the bad taste in your mouth affect seeing either #5 or #8? Based on numbers alone, which could you stomach seeing?

  27. Patrick in VA Says:

@Brandon – This is going to slip in to a debate that I don’t have enough interest to see through, largely because people rarely change other people’s minds about anything, but the same arguments that exist for Glennon are ones that are there in our government as well. The president appears to be struggling in areas but you could just as easily point to how the short comings of those that are supposed to be supporting him are keeping him from being able to effectively do his job. The offensive line are Glennon’s Congress. They can’t work together effectively and Glennon isn’t powerful enough to be able to run the team without their support.

  28. lurker Says:

we have spent too much $$$ and draft picks on the lines already. time to get our qb. not some 3rd round pick in the poorest qb draft in years (taken 3rd noless). we need a bonafide starter, not a pinocchio wannabe a real qb!

  29. Skyline Crew Says:

    taxcom,

You must be using new math as well. We don’t have the 32 ranked offense this year. We have the 32 ranked offense in Total YDS. In Pts we are 30th. However, we are not last in Pass yds (Seattle/KC) nor Rushing yds (Oakland). However, when you do add up the total of both for Total Yds we are last in that category. I guess you can spin it however you feel like.

  30. 1bucfan88 Says:

Slide Dot over to the left for crying out loud!!!! It’s like these coaches are blind and have no imagination. DOTSON IS NOT A POWER TACKLE, nor will be ever be. He’s agile, got long arms, and quick feet…way more suited to pass blocking on ththe left side. Why can’t any other coach see this? Cousins, on the other hand, has been the backup RT all year. Sure he probably sucks there about as much as guard, but he’s at least had some experience there from his time in The Factory of Sadness. Warhop is so utterly incompetent, I sometimes wonder how he manages to put on his pants correctly in the morning. What a joke.

  31. Jordan Says:

Joe, Glennon has averaged 257 passing yds/game which is good for 11th in the NFL. The Bucs have put up 22.6 points per game under Glennon which is good for 19th overall tie with San Fran. Saying that Glennon leads the 32nd ranked offense is like saying Johnny Manziel has led the Browns to a 4-3 record. Glennon has nothing to do with the 10 quarters played by Josh McCown.

  32. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Brandon

As Joe frequently says this is a football blog and not a political blog! Which is good for you because you clearly are clueless as to how government works. There are THREE branches. Do you know that.

I can’t speak for Patrick but I took his comment to be non partisan…as in PRESIDENT(S). The same criticisms were aimed unfairly at Bush just as they are now at Obama and always are at ANY Presidents. It’s just that you right wing nut jobs have elevated it to new levels.

@Joe….apologies for violating your code which I respect and agree with.

Fair enough, Patrick. Well stated and represented.

    Stpete-

I taught History and Civics for two years before teaching English for the next 10 years…I’m pretty sure I know how the government works…and as far as me being right wing anything…no. I’m anti-idiot. Intelligent liberals know the con job that has been going on for the last eight years. Sorry that you can’t see it, you probably think Glennon is the next Peyton Manning, too.

  34. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Be scared mgm be very scared because I saw that Licht was at Louisville last night and Winston will be the QB of the furure next season. Two seasons for your man and he doesn’t cut the mustard, doesn’t inspire confidence, doesn’t have heart for the extra stuff. He will be traded and Josh McCown will train him up, woooooo. Jameis, baby!

  35. Skyline Crew Says:

Anyways, away from which party is the dumbest debate. Maybe we can all say a little prayer for or dance or whatever you do for Glennon on Sunday. I’m sure he is going to get mangled behind that line. One thing is for sure though, he is a tough SOB for continuing to stand behind that line and get hit play after play. I would like to see some fire from him and just go off on his linemen though. Would be comical.

  36. Skyline Crew Says:

Unless Winston can play in the 1st half of games he is just like Glennon. Throws off the back foot, makes stupid decisions when throwing (falling down and throwing), stares down receivers sometimes, over throws receivers sometimes, he likes to spot throw and if him and the receiver aren’t on the same page it is usually an interception. I’m sure he can develop though, but like I said he can’t be crap in the 1st half and then be good in the 2nd. Glennon already does that now and it isn’t working.

  37. tweezydakidd Says:

    Well said Patrick!!

  38. pick6 Says:

sadly, the dropoff from anthony collins to oneil cousins may not be very significant.

  39. BuccDeez Says:

    Hey skyline crew
Im not big on Jameis Winston but im willing to bet a piece of the farm that he will do better than Tampa’s last 5Qb’s. I say he will be Equal 2or better than the likes of D. McNabb or S. Mcnair.

  40. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s always funny to me how black QBs are only ever compared to other historical black QBs
