Bowers Came Up Empty

September 21st, 2014

BowersreturnsYes, Da’Quan Bowers was in Atlanta for the beating of the century Thursday night.

Bowers played more than half the Bucs’ defensive snaps by Joe’s count, but the fourth-year defensive end didn’t show up on the stat sheet.

That’s not easy to do, but Bucs fans are familiar with such happenings.

The guy who beat out Bowers last year, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, made 12 starts at defensive end last season and was really good at invisibility. Te’o-Nesheim was sackless in 2013 and made nine solo tackles in 16 games. It’s no surprise that he’s currently unemployed.

Some believe it’s a surprise that Bowers is employed.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) was ranting on WDAE-AM 620 after Thursday’s debacle about how “Bowers has to get better to be bad.” That’s how lousy Beckles believes Bowers game is right now.

Joe really hopes the wounded Buccaneers defensive linemen, Gerald McCoy and Michael Johnson (who?), find their way back to the field full-time. Watching Bowers is depressing. Rarely can he shake a block and he often looks lifeless. At least Will Gholson shows promise.

Bower’s came up empty? That’s one hell of a shocker.

  2. Buc89 Says:

Bowers sucks. I never watched him in college, he used to be good?????!!!!!!!!

  3. Ray Rice Says:

Not emptier than his heart!!! This guy is a scrub. No fight in him.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I spent a few snaps just watching Bowers on Thursday. I’m not exaggerating when i say he ran harder when being subbed out than when he was actually in the middle of a play. He is ridiculously slow off the ball. The offensive lineman was standing up waiting for Bowers to get out of his stance. There was one particular play when he didn’t even make contact with the lineman before the ball was out. That’s pathetic, and I officially give up on him. I’m not even sure it was from a lack of effort, or if he is just that bad. Either way, he’s done. I wish him well, but it won’t be as an NFL player.

  5. PANHANDLE BUC Says:

Unfortunately we are so thin at DL right now, he must get playing time.

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

For the record, there’s nothing wrong with not wanting to be a football player. He was apparently blessed with God-given talent (even though I’ve yet to see it), so I understand why he would try to capitalize on it and become a professional. If I had an incredible voice but hated singing, you could bank on it that I would be selling records and touring the country. Gotta make that money! However, like him, my career wouldn’t last very long.

  7. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Does anyone know if the QB of the DEFENSE – Mason Foster will be playing on Sunday? How long is he out for?

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Hawaiian Buc

No pineapple for DaQuan….bet you’re disapointed!!!

  9. Jim Walker Says:

Soon he will be back with his gospel band and he will be able to shake this football thing he did for a bit.

  10. bucrightoff Says:

Bowers had fewer tackles (0) than Glennon or Dietrich-Smith (1 each). At this point he clearly won’t be getting it here, he should be cut.

  11. DB55 Says:

Before Thursday Bowers and V. Jackson were tied with tackles for the season @ 1 a piece. I think now Jackson might have more tackles and Bowers. Smh

  12. DB55 Says:

So did mccoy break his hand or a finger. The most recent picture I saw has him w a stint on his pointer n middle finger. If that’s the case then that dude is seriously lacking some heart n pride. A broken finger really dude? I know he reads this site. C’mon mccoy help me “get my facts straight”.

Seems odd that you know McCoy reads JoeBucsFan.com. The guy broke his hand, geez, give him a break for not playing less than 100 hours later. You don’t even know if team doctors would have let him. –Joe

  13. DB55 Says:

Btw. Saw the pic on the buc.com site in the “week 3 coaches corner” video @ mark 1:41.

  14. DB55 Says:

I think we should all retweet Eric legrands tweet to mccoy everyday for the rest of the week better yet the season. Been watching the game film and contray to popular belief mccoy is not getting double n triple teamed every play. He actually been blocked by rookies n getting handled. And yes Joseph not only owed McCoy apparently knocked him out the game with a boo boo on his finggy. Maybe next week they can come onto the field w this song

  17. DB55 Says:

Just bc you ask joe. but tell me how mankins doc let him play w a torn acl. Seems much worse than a broken finger or hand for that matter.

  18. Gt40bear Says:

I think they all suck and as good as GMC can be, can can’t stay on the field! No talent abounds on this team. “With the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft…”

  19. RastaMon Says:

Seems odd that you know McCoy reads JoeBucsFan.com. The guy broke his hand, geez, give him a break for not playing less than 100 hours later. You don’t even know if team doctors would have let him. –Joe
    good…hope
    McCoy appreciates American history…lets work this backwards…American GI’s…Iraq…Somalia …VietNam…Korea…WWII.. get the freak’n picture…broken..broken..broken !!!! man

  20. OB Says:

    Joe

As you say, we play a season not just one game. GMC needs the hand to shed blocks and grab the ball carrier. It was just broken and none of us have seen the x-rays nor the mri, as much as this man is a professional, if he could play he would and I am sure he wants to but the coaches said no because one or two game versus a long time just isn’t odds you want nor do you want him to injure it further and then what, keep clowns like Bowers in? Bowers should not be on the team.

  21. RastaMon Says:

If McCoy is ??? the best DT on the team…and he has a broken bone in his hand…BF’nDeal !…I’ve had a broken hand…among other broken bones on separate occasions..yeah a broken bone in ones hand hurts when it is broken…not much afterwards…of course NO one is going to tell him he can play in this Law suit/sue/you society….MAN up big man…YOU KNOW you could have played and made a positive difference…sad…

  22. DB55 Says:

Guess I care more than I should. Just really really sux to see the entire nation laughing at tampa. Actually it’s so sad they don’t even laugh it’s more like pity. You know it’s bad when friends don’t even clown on you and your team. They just look really concerned for you like you’re in a hospital bed or something. Sad state of affairs.

I tried to replay the game but couldn’t watch the second half. 28-0 in 15 minutes is just rediculous. Worse than a college team. And I don’t know why everyone sticks up for McCoy so much? Best 3 tech in the league? Child please! Geno Adkins and Dominant Suh would disagree, chuckle in fact, as they ask “when’s they last time you took your team to the playoffs buddy?” #noexcuses #nosurrender #nomorescars

  23. JBuc Says:

@Rastaman, do you think having McCoy out there on Thursday would have made that big a difference? I’d rather him sit out and get completely healthy then see him play with one hand while the rest of the team can’t distinguish their head from their ass

  24. DB55 Says:

Y’all need me to suit up Bucs???

So 13 games remianing for much needed (LOL) player evaluation. So there should be no EXCUSES next year.

  30. Brooks4Prez Says:

Bowers, Barron, Slowborne, Mclown, cut them all loose.

  31. DB55 Says:

    Brooks don’t forget jackson

  32. DB55 Says:

Not jackson. Mike Johnson. Damn auto correct

  33. j lynch Says:

mankins would play with a broken Ill bet..

  34. RastaMon Says:

DD55…McCoy could not play…because with his broken pinky he had not been able to finish reading all the articles about how he was the best 3 technique/4 technique/5 technique/ all everything never really done anything playing in MY last year of rookie contract player…ever..ever..ever…I am pissed ! at his lack…. of lack of !

  35. "that guy" Says:

lovie should resigne and let me take the reigns -.- i agree that mccoy is being beatin in the middle. he should play RE not DT, he will win by shooting gaps, but if he misses there is no strength to collapse the pocket. we should’ve drafted aaron donald when we had the chance.

dane fletcher is better than mason foster.

  36. Brooks4Prez Says:

Starting to wonder if Schiano should have been given another year? He only lost one game in two season by as wide a margin as Thursday night, that was the 2012 season, December-Saints 42-0. Most every game for 2012 & 2013 was close or at least not a blow out. But last year, after seven straight losses Schiano motivated his players to come into Seattle and b!tch slap the seahawks for a little more than a half of football before giving up that 8th loss. I do not see any motivation on the part of the players. Anyone else see it different?

  40. Martinii Says:

Sorry to change the subject, but I was unable to get Joes big announcement at 9:AM. Would one you guys enlighten me. Thank. PS Bowers is a bust, however I fear we may have several busts on this team.

  41. buc4lyfe Says:

Will Gholson showed promise…. Oh no here we go again, same thing you said about Bowers when he got here, same thing you said about him in the one preseason. Will Gholson was a no show also Bowers is on this roster because this staff allowed it, for a team to draft all offensive players tells you just what their evaluation told them and no look at the defense, we know he sucks, hey how about if you want to have a strong defense you draft defensive talent to groom. THIS IS ALL LOVIE FAULT, how many players are we gonna employ that aren’t good enough to play for someone else?

  42. "that guy" Says:

agreed. i believe that there was QB controversy inside the team. i believe that is why the o line got butchered. i believe rest of team is kinda laying down over that… offense was the driving force of last years team.

LOL…….. driving force. what a damn joke.

  43. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I wonder if Sam Wyche is still around. He is the guy who drafted all the talent that really made the Bucs.

  50. Hawaiian Buc Says:

How dare anyone on this site say McCoy should have played. You don’t no squat about squat. You think you would be able to do it, I call bullspit. It’s real easy to say that sitting behind your keyboard. It was a freaking Thursday game jack arse!!!! You think it’s smart to risk further injury (which is an extremely strong possibility) for one game? If you do, then you are a freaking moron! I am blown away by the stupidity, selfishness, and overall lack of common sense by so many on this site. McCoy absolutely was devastated after the Rams game. If he could have played, he would have. I promise you the game means more to him than it does to ANY of us.

  55. DB55 Says:

I figure it’s got to be his fingers because he’s wearing a stint on this pointer and middle fingers. I’m no doctor, but if we have one in the house please correct me if I’m wrong. 57. DB55 Says:

All I’m saying is if you can hold a clipboard with your broken hand then you can play. At least thats the football I know. Maybe I’m just stupid idk but I’ve been right all along about this entire debacle.

  59. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I guarantee you if Ali had to punch with his jaw, he wouldn’t have finished. If Williams threw with his jaw, he wouldn’t have played. Have you never seen McCoy (or any D-lineman for that matter) play? Have you not seen how much he uses his hands? Sapp missed a game on a Sunday after breaking his hand. Is he soft too? Your revisionists history is amusing. It’s always funny how stories get exaggerated as the years go by. And yes, he broke his hand, not his finger.

  60. RastaMon Says:

McCoy could and should have played….it would have caused NO futher damage to his hand…yes he MIGHT not have been able to make to best of every down…but every down would have been better….and he most probably woul have had an IMPACT the game….listen Hawaiian Buc…McCoy had A broken, that means ONE…broken bone in his mit….tape it up…and play !…..the way it has has always been played…nobody is asking him to go Ronnie Lott…and cut his hand off….

  61. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @RastaMon,

Again, was Sapp soft for missing a game? Instead of citing people in other sports, other positions, or other injuries, why don’t you compare apples to apples? Pretty convenient, don’t you think? And I bet you still don’t answer. Talk about being soft – you’re soft

  62. Hawaiian Buc Says:

And how exactly do you know it wouldn’t have caused further damage? When you have a break and it gets hit, it ABSOLUTELY causes further damage. Are you that f-ing stupid to believe otherwise???

  63. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Thoughts and prayers go out to The Bironas family today.

Metro Nashville Police said Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from home. Police said in a statement on the department website that his SUV was speeding when it went off the road and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert.

  64. DB55 Says:

Sapp missed a game. Did he have on a cast around his entire hand? I saw fingers covered. Call me what you will. Doesn’t even matter bc frazier in weak too. You can not possibly defend 2nd and 3rd stringer chopping us up like that. Matty Ice and Julio jones toying with us. Olsen, Austin, Hester. No shame no pride. Goldson looks like Revis 2.0 – dazed and confused. McDonald and gholston the only two playing to their potential or above it. David and Soloman too. Banks fell off last week so did Verner.

I’dominate Suh has 2 sacks and tackle for loss vs GB. McCoy no showed vs Falcons nursing a hurt hand for 5 days. In 5 days antibiotics and mild painkillers would be effective. I am not a dr but I play one on the Internet.

  65. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,

Do you perhaps think the wrapping may have changed had McCoy played? Oh my, you’re dumb! Also, I love how you add a day and say 5 days, when it was 4. Again, Sapp had 7 and couldn’t do it. Funny thing is, had he hurt his hand worse (even though you are so stupid you don’t believe that’s possible, lol), you would be the very one screaming about how stupid it was to waste him for one game. Deny it all you want, because that just makes you even more of a joke than you already are.

Where have you seen me defend our performance? Nice job making stuff up. Definitely the work of a weak person. But again, please keep it up. I’m really enjoying watching you continue to dig and dig and dig.

no…. ali was GETTING PUNCHED IN HIS JAW not punching with it…. and yes he finished. that was just an idiotic statement.

  68. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @”that guy”,

Again, why are you comparing boxing in the 60s to football? That’s idiotic. Why not compare him to a guy in the same sport, same position, same injury, and even same team? Because that wouldn’t fit your agenda, now would it?

  69. Hawaiian Buc Says:

It’s not a pain thing with McCoy. He needs to use his hand to grab lineman and shed their blocks. That’s a big part of his game. He went back into the Rams game for a play, but couldn’t do what he needed to do to be successful. It’s not a tough thing, it’s a help thing. He can’t help his team if he can’t do what he has to do, and he certainly can’t help if he gets hurt further and misses more games. This is comical that some people can’t grasp the concept and are judging someone the heart of a man they have never met.

  72. Dan Says:

When the Bucs drafted him in the 2nd round, I thought we had a steal. For most of that college football season he was projected to be the #1 overall pick. Teams were only scared away by his knee injury.

That said, I used to be one of the biggest Bowers supporters around. I felt like he was never healthy enough to be given a true opportunity. I have no more excuses. I’m done with him as a fan. He’s still got 13 games to prove his worth, but my hope for him is gone. He’ll never live up to that 2nd round pick spent on him and I think we can all safely say that he is a BUST. Clayborn might not come back…Bowers definitely wont.

    Hawaii

Mason is not soft imo. But then again no one claims he’s the best in the game. He not the defensive leader and he’s not positioning for a huge multi-million contract. Revis was soft, he is soft and that’s quite literal. Heard he likes to party with freeman, Sam n his own manager who knows more about Revis than his own wife, that is if he was married. Revis got burnt last yr regularly, Wallace made him look bad a few weeks ago n the rookie David Carr had no fear of him today either.

Hawaii you need to fix the rabbit ears on your television set so you can see what going on before commenting brother.

  81. Fort Myers Dave Says:

I like Ian Beckles quote that he has to get better to simply be called bad. He’s right. Hopefully McCoy and Johnson start vs Pittsburgh and actually make a few plays…

  82. John Sapp Says:

Schiano’s Bucs (Hell even Raheem’s) would destroy Lovies bucs. Josh “Nickel Bag” Freeman would amass 400 plus yards passing against this vanilla defense. What a disgrace and a joke this team has become.

  83. John Sapp Says:

@DB55, I agree. I have yet to see Mason Foster emerge as a true leader, a leader of the Hardy Nickerson, Derrick Brooks type. He really needs to step up.

  84. John Sapp Says:

I broke my right hand once at work, called a “Boxers fracture”, at the time it happened my adrenaline was so rushed I did not notice until I was sitting down writing my report and a co-worker pointed out the big lump behind my pinkie finger. I agree with Hawaian Buc, it is difficult to grasp anything with the broken hand as the muscle pulls the affected bone and causes pain. It will also delay the healing process. I think if GMC does not play and allows it to heal he can be back by the Minnessota Game.

  85. drdneast Says:

Bowers is so limp and lame his last girl friend broke up with him because he didn’t want to get any penetration with her, either. Surely to god there is an overweight out of work cab driver or dock worker who could play meaner than this guy.
Bowers is the No. 1 reason the Bucs let Michael Bennett go. What a pack of fools who made that decision.

  86. chris Says:

A little late on the war with Hawaiian Buc, but, if he wants a football reference, how about Jack Youngblood with a broken leg? Or , does 70s football not count either. Yes, Mccoy is soft, right down to his pansy ass answer to the press, about the blowout” Ask them”.

  87. biff barker Says:

All the anger directed at McCoy for not playing with a broken hand is a sign of the Bucs fan’s fragile mental state.

    It’s about D’Quan.

Bowers has not, and will seemingly never measure up to be a serviceable player. At least in Tampa.

  88. BoJim Says:

Jeez. Why all the McCoy hate? Except for a reasonable few, the rest of you guys are idiots and phoneys. None of you guys could or would play with a broken anything.

  89. "that guy" Says:

mccoy should play DE, we should have grabbed timmy jernigan or aaron donald in last draft. those are 2 guys who collapse the pocket. mccoy has explosion off the snap to play DE, but no brute strength to push his matchup back IF HE DOES NOT BEAT HIM TO THE GAP as a DT. DE fits him better than undertackle.
