Josh McCown Talks Guards

August 14th, 2014

????????????????????????????

Earlier this week, Tampa Bay starting quarterback Josh McCown appeared on “Schein on Sports,” heard exclusively on “Mad Dog Radio,” part of the family of sports channels found on SiriusXM Radio, where he was asked by host Adam Schein who would start on the offensive line.

McCown rattled off the obvious names but when it came to the guards, McCown simply punted and said, in so many words, it is up to offensive line caoch George Warhop.

This afternoon after the final practice of training camp 2014, which ended early following a second lightning warning, Joe asked 35-year-old McCown if he was ever on a team that did not know who would start at either guard spot at the end of training camp,

After some pondering, McCown guessed, yes.

“Oh, [I’ve been through] a lot of training camps,” McCown said. “I’m sure it has happened, yeah, I’m sure it has happened, yeah. There is always — you play long enough in this league – you have been in just about every sort of situation you can imagine.

“There is always competition at different positions. That is one of them for us we are trying to sort things out, and find out what the best fit is for us. At least what we learned in this camp is that guys are going to come in give us everything that they’ve got and that will help everybody evaluate, you know, what the best sports and the best mix of that group is going to be.

“I trust the coaches and I trust [offensive line coach] George Warhop that they will put together the best [guards] that they can.”

What Joe didn’t get a chance to ask McCown was of the team(s) who didn’t know its starting guards when training camp ended, what the record of said team(s) was, and how many bones in McCown’s body might have been broken.

Joe is not among the fans hollering so much about the play of the Bucs guards that neighborhood dogs cower under beds in fear of a boot to the ribs.

No, Bucs coach Lovie Smith doesn’t have much to work with. But the Bucs don’t need for the offensive line to be the 1976 Raiders’. Even if the Bucs can get one guard to play sufficiently, it would help a great deal.

Folks, it is Aug. 14, not Sept. 7. Try a Crown Royal on the rocks tonight to soothe your frayed nerves. Joe trusts Lovie.

Jaycee thinks McCown better up his life insurance policy. Forget the broken ribs, his testicles will be on the milk cartons that say, “Have you seen…”
