Joe Talks OTAs, QB Controversy, Lovietalk, Tight Ends & More

May 21st, 2014

It’s Joe’s high-energy, weekly hour of all-things-Bucs talk with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620. Enjoy the audio below of Wednesday’s action. Joe’s gets after it again next Wednesday with Duemig, too.

  1. Andrew 1 Says:

Ok, hold on a second Joe. You’re saying that the regime is riling fans up by saying how much they love Glennon so that fans will want him to start over McCown the second he messes up. But that doenst make any sense. I mean why would L&L bring in a solid veteran and name him the starter if they are just looking for an excuse to start Glennon? Or better yet, why give fans a reason to scream for Glennon, why not just declare him the starting QB outright if that’s who they really want starting all along? Its counter productive, don’t you think? I think they really want McCown to start the whole season and are just giving lip service about Glennon so that 1- fans wont be outraged that we didn’t draft a franchise QB, or 2- make it seem like the future is bright and that we have a plan for the future since we have a “future franchise QB” on the roster in Glennon. Might even be a combination of both those things.

  2. Andrew 1 Says:

There’s also the off chance that they actually, truly believe that Glennon is a future franchise QB, in which case LOL. I kid MGM, put the pitch forks down.

  3. SteveK Says:

Mike Glennon is the QB of the future.

  4. SteveK Says:

Mike Glennon > Josh Freeman and the 2013 & 2014 QBs drafted

  5. SteveK Says:

    Big Dog,

We’re not in love with Glennon. We are in love with the fact that we broke ourselves free of Freeman.

  6. sam Says:

Ray Farmer: Hoyer is better than Manziel “by a substantial margin”

  7. sam Says:

Thank goodness we got mike evans

  8. Lynch Says:

    @StevenK

This is so true. Ill never forget game against the Jets and we blow a time out on the first play of the game lol! Call a running play Josh, that’s all we were going to do anyway!

  9. Buc1987 Says:

The Joes. Outstanding Buc reporting. As far as reading between lines though, they can’t read a damn thing right. It’s never ending.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

[Then don’t listen, real simple. — Joe]

  11. eric Says:

Joe and Steve I heard the bucs just hired some new people in their personnel department did anyone call and ask you guys to submit a resume hum, i didn’t think so!

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Stevek

Ok, I hear you, and you may even be right. But in your estimation, how far into the “future” do you think the reins will be handed over to Glennon? According to the Joe’s, could be very early into the start of this upcoming season. I’ll be honest, that makes me laugh a little bit, becasue if thats the case then why the charade? Declare him the starter already and be done with it.

  13. eric Says:

Freemen had Mike Williams, VJ, Doug Martin, Dallas Clark Duemig you Freeman Hunk he was soft mentally you can’t win with a soft QB

  14. Joe Says:

Joe and Steve I heard the bucs just hired some new people in their personnel department did anyone call and ask you guys to submit a resume hum, i didn’t think so!

Hhhmmm. Just gonna guess the Bucs only hired six people. So by your logic, no one but a person under the employ of the Bucs can discuss moves. Gotcha. Were you such an advocate of censorship and head-in-the-sand mentality when Raheem or Schiano were coaching?

  15. Joe Says:

We are in love with the fact that we broke ourselves free of Freeman.

Noble cause and worthy goal. But the phrase “be careful what you wish for” springs to mind.

  16. Architek Says:

Joe you guys kind of confuse me because I don’t know if the glass is half empty or half full from listening.

  17. Couch Fan Says:

LOL that’s ok they can love The Giants 3rd string QB all they want. Thank god that bum of a QB is gone and will never start in this league just as I predicted. Once a bum always a bum. Thank you Schiano for ridding us of that piece of trash.

  18. DallasBuc Says:

Anyone find the “big dog’s” lame attempt at humor remotely amusing?
“He has a cannon for an arm. Really?”…tshirt joke

  19. Couch Fan Says:

    Oh and…

    – LONG LIVE THE MGM!!!

  20. Pelbuc Says:

[Not sure how Freeman factors into this . At all. Freeman is about as relevant to this issue as Geno Hayes. (Joe doesn’t disagree with your Freeman sentiment, BTW. )As always, if you don’t like something, then don’t listen. — Joe]

  21. Buc1987 Says:

DallasBuc….actually I found it to be idiotic.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

[Then don’t listen, real simple. — Joe]

It’s really not that simple Joe. Some of the shows are great and some of them BD just pisses me off is all. So as you can see, it’s not that simple at all.

  23. Architek Says:

I’m growing tired of the cannon jokes, it’s corny and lame.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

@Joe I guess just don’t criticize the show or you’ll be censored is what you’re trying to tell me.

Actually I’ve seen it done numerous times. So guess I should know better. I’ll censor myself from now on, I don’t need you to do it for me anymore. No more worries from me Joe. It won’t happen again.

  25. Couch Fan Says:

You can criticize the show you just have to be careful on how you do it, make it a more general statement than direct. Can’t really blame Joe for that either, the show is like advertisement for JBF so it makes sense to sensor some things.

  26. Harry Says:

FYI: “CG Technology, which operates eight Nevada sports books”, has installed Tampa Bay as a favorite in only three games through Week 16:

    St. Louis (-2.5), Baltimore (-1), Minnesota (-3)

There is a reality check for us.

  27. Joe Says:

@Joe I guess just don’t criticize the show or you’ll be censored is what you’re trying to tell me.

Joe has a business relationship with Clear Channel. Joe has written this 1001 times. If you cannot understand this, then Joe cannot help you. Every friggin’ week you whine about Duemig. Who the hell is putting a gun to your head to listen if you loathe him so much? Joe can’t stand Dull Patrick. Guess what? He doesn’t listen to him.

  28. Joe Says:

    Couch:

Being critical isn’t taboo. Getting personal is. You understand the difference. Sadly, too many don’t.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Couch…oh I get it. I know exactly why he has to watch what people type about the show. What I typed, they had nothing to worry about though. I guess he thought otherwise, and that’s fine by me too.

“It’s an opinion based website” -Joe

  30. The_Buc_Realist Says:

That was a huge rug that you guys swept Josh Freeman under.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    “Quarterback Controversy”

From where?….Not from Lovie or Licht. Not from Glennon, not from McCown……there is no controversy except from the media that thrives on controversy and from fans who love to debate.
That’s not to say that one won’t develop….but we don’t have one now.
McCown is the starter….Glennon is the backup/future.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Again… “some of the shows are great and some of them BD just pisses me off is all.”

Not every friggin week on this particular thread about the show do I complain about BD. Check the archives. I do however have things to say about him from time to time on other threads. As well as many other fans.
So check the archives where I’m on the JBF shows thread complaining about BD if you have the time. I bet you’ll maybe find 2 in the last year, a far cry from “every friggin’week.”

  33. ElioT Says:

The Hate/Talk nothing about real Bucs’ news hour!

Be careful what we wish for? Yeah, we really wish we still had Freeman who couldn’t start for any NFL team. Get over it already! Glennon is better than Freeman, always will be!

I’m not a Glennon fanatic, but all this criticism and blatant Glennon hate is really getting old. Would love to hear the Joes debate Glennon’s potential and talent with someone other than that dinosaur know-nothing “big-dog”. You know, someone who knows what the hell they’re talking about and not just full of hatred and hot air!

I love your site Joes, but you guys need to chill out.

    Go Bucs!!!

  35. Joe Says:

Glennon is better than Freeman, always will be!

Not yet. But then again, why are we debating Freeman? Has zero relevance to issue at hand.

  36. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

glennon=kyle orton and will be traded after this season. orton lead the broncos to a 1-4 start then was benched for tebow who lead that SAME team to the playoffs.

brees makes any receiver look good, carolina got rid of all their wide-outs and kept the no names–thats how good they think cam newton is. ryan is good for his team and their system but glennon needs the globetrotters to help him be average. Their is nothing special about a qb who leads his team to the 31st ranked offense, NOTHING!

  37. Joe Says:

The Hate/Talk nothing about real Bucs’ news hour!

Hhhmmm. Joe could have sworn he talked about Tim Wright. Could have sworn he talked about Jeff Demps. Could have sworn Joe talked about Mike Evans. Could have sworn he talked about quarterbacks battling to make training camp. Should Joe continue?

  38. Joe Says:

carolina got rid of all their wide-outs and kept the no names–thats how good they think cam newton is.

THAT’S an interesting angle Joe never thought of before. Not sure Joe agrees, but it is a thought.

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“carolina got rid of all their wide-outs and kept the no names–thats how good they think cam newton is.”

Maybe that’s why we aren’t concerned about our Oline….we’ve got McCown/Glennon and a bunch of Basketball WR/TEs

  40. bucu Says:

Some sports talk shows talk about sports. Some get personal and talk about fans. Why?.. because if someone is talking crap about what you do or don’t like or what you do or don’t do. Your going to listen and call in with your opinion. Its all a ploy to get your ear.. I personally would rather listen to someone that actually talks sports and isn’t all gloom and doom every day.

  41. bigpoppabuc Says:

I wouldn’t call it a controversy. That being said it’s not out of the question to still allow open competition, and I’m confident the staff will make the right choice if Glennon is clearly running the offense better and gives us the better chance to win by the end of training camp. We didn’t give McCown 20 million bucks. We gave him what he wanted…. Which was the decent payday and a job that’s his to keep or lose. McCown is the starter “going into camp” and Glennon is the “future”… Either way I guess we have two good backups, right?

  42. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Tampabaybucfan

I think you’re right, and that pisses me off. I’m not mad so much at the fact that the media is trying to create controversy, that’s not it at all. Its that whatever controversy they concoct beforehand, it actually does have a way of ending up coming true! No matter how ridiculous the controversy is! Do we have a bunch of fortune tellers in our local media or does the media have more clout then I give them credit for? idk. Maybe I just underestimate the media’s knowledge of the inner-workings of the bucs organization. That last one must be it.

  43. Cannuckbuc Says:

Wow if you guys hate the joes and the big dog so much why do you read and write on this site so much?I see the same guys slam them over and over again. Now I don’t agree with the comments all the time but I for one love this site for the wit and insight on the Bucs.Just wondering why you guys say the same things over and over .

  44. Dreambig Says:

I would love to comment on this but alas I can’t. Can’t stand Duemig so I won’t be listening …. probably not ever! Love your site Joe but I won’t be taking that journey with you.

  45. JFat Says:

I don’t get the need to constantly put down a QB on our own team who has been nothing but professional and has apparently impressed his new coaches. “The cannon” crap is old and that t-shirt joke is a really poor attempt at humor, you can hear the Joes’ awkward smiles waiting for an actual punch line.

  46. Joe Says:

    Dreambig:

    Understand. Appreciate your reasoning.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Cannuckbuc…it’s very simple. Many of us me included love the site as well. Joe does a great job of reporting on our team for us. It’s an opinion based website so the Joe’s have their own opinions. I have mine, he has his and you have yours. You call it slamming? That’s a little extreme imo. “Hate” now that’s very extreme and off base.

    As far as BD goes.

[Quit trying to get Joe in trouble! If you have issues with Clear Channel talent, there are tons of places on the internet where you can vent. So long as Joe has a marketing agreement with Clear Channel, this is not one of those places. Why can’t you understand this??? Please knock it off! Thank you. — Joe]

  48. Buc1987 Says:

Newbucsfan!!!…I’d appreciate your vast knowledge of how Lovie conducted things while in Chicago. If I was a Bears fan. You seem to for whatever reason think that how Lovie conducted himself in Chicago is how he will do things here. Like your Orton-Glennon comparison thingy. That’s just an example. You do it all the time. We’ll see how many of these things you get right. I think it will be very little. You also mentioned on an earlier thread how even McCoy better play hard or he’s out of here.

Thanks for all your unwanted Lovie did this in the past, so this is what’s going to happen here in Tampa advice, but no thanks. Keep posting though. It makes for a good laugh.

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew 1

Actually….I think it very well could eventually become a controversy…..sort of “the grass is greener”…..here’s what could happen.
    McCown doesn’t produce up to expectations….mediocre etc…
Year 2….McCown production starts to fall off….
Everything really depends on McCown….if he performs, there is no controversy.
In this day and age of 24/7/365 cable etc & Internet….it takes controversy to fuel the need…..it’s not sinister….just the nature of the media beast!!!

  50. Architek Says:

    Buc1987,
You have clearly spoke for the masses and I support you stance concerning Clear Channel talent and staff!

I stop listening to the media member after the MW debacle because the media member waffled each show.

Do I blame JBF no, but the jokes about Glennon is irrelevant to Bucs news. L&L stated they support MG and it is what it is!

  51. Buc1987 Says:

LOL I don’t have a facebook page. Maybe it’s time I created one. A place where Buc fans can go to vent about a certain radio host. That would be proper.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

[If you have to type about Duemig once more tonight, it will be your last comment. KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Joe is done being nice. Asked you enough times to stop but you keep going. NO MORE! — Joe]

  53. Buc1987 Says:

    “once more tonight”

So tomorrow is cool then right?

    Just kidding Joe.

    ElioT…your post should be deleted.

  54. Joe Says:

    Just kidding Joe.

    Thank you.

  55. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Tampabaybucfan

The controversy concerning McCown could very well be warranted. I was speaking more about the controversy concerning the whole Freeman and Schiano debacle coming true. When all that stuff came out, I was thinking about how stupid it all sounded and that it must have been BS. I mean, be honest, what did you think when you first heard that Schiano rigged the player’s votes so that Freeman would not be captain. You probably thought, like the majority of bucs fans, that is was absolutely ridiculous. But now? It doesn’t seem ridiculous at all. McCown is a question mark, sure, but I think he will do pretty well. As far as controversy goes, the sad part is most diehard bucs fans don’t need controversy to follow the bucs, yet if we want follow our team, we have no choice but to put up with it.

  56. Joe Says:

    It is.

  57. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Joe

It might have been all BS, but correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t that when everything went downhill. True or not true, fabricated or not, it seems as though the media has a certain degree of influence on what happens to the team. So what say you Joe? If you say no, then I’ll take your word for it and end it at that.

  58. Joe Says:

Not sure how much influence local scribes have on Josh Freeman’s ability to tell time. And that was the root of the meltdown. Aside from Freeman blowing off his own camp, Joe doesn’t know of one person credentialed to cover the Bucs who knew of Freeman’s issues with clocks.

Joe understands what you are suggesting, but that’s why Freeman was fined so much and not re-elected as a captain. He was irresponsible (but never, to Joe’s knowledge, had a mattress in his front yard).

  59. Drew Says:

    @Joe
After reading all these comments, it just shows why you have a website and these people keep reading and commenting. One comment that got to me was how Josh had Martin, VJax, Williams, Dallas Clark, and we lost. Hmmmm. If I remember right, we set Buccaneer offensive records that year. At QB too. But I also remember we set NFL RECORDS AS WORST PASS DEFENSE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL, so… if I recall that defense lost about 5 games for us which we had the lead, so it actually was the defense fault we did not go 11-5. I also remember this throw that JOSH FREEMAN MADE IN ONE OF HIS MANY COM BACK VICTORIES AS A QB, WHICH IS SO ME THIS YOU CAN TEACH. AGAINST THE PANTHERS TO VJAX. THE BULLET IN BETWEEN 6 GUYS, TOUCHDOWN, TWO POINT PASS TO CLARK LEFT SIDE GOOD. WE WIN THE GAME. GLENNON WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT THROW, IT’S A NFL THROW, JOSH’S FIRST WIN WAS A COME BACK VICTORY. GLENNON HAS YET TO BRING US BACK TO WIN A GAME. GLENNON KEEP HIM IN TAMPA, SMART GUY, MEANS GREAT FILM WATCHER, HELP THE STARTER IN GREAT WAYS. IT’S ALL ABOUT #12 BABY, HE IS OUR RICH GANNON.

  60. Drew Says:

And in my rant I meant something you cannot teach when it comes to having guts and bringing a team back to win. Josh also brought us back to win to make the playoffs, and the refs even said they blew the offensive pass interference on Winslow. To which Green Bay got in and won the Super Bowl.

  61. Drew Says:

And sorry the pass to Clark was for the ot victory.

  62. Joe Says:

and the refs even said they blew the offensive pass interference on Winslow. To which Green Bay got in and won the Super Bowl.

Yup. The NFL admitted they blew the call against DJ Toes on the Line. Man, how that one call changed NFL history.

  63. Andrew 1 Says:

Yes the Freeman couldn’t wake up thing piled on, but I thought the whole thing started with either the rigged voting, or Freeman intentionally missing out on the team photo. Either way, It seemed as though once the media sunk their teeth in, there was no way Freeman or Schiano was going to get out of it with their career’s lol. Story after story, it seemed as though the media’s sole purpose was to discredit them, for whatever reason. In the end though I guess it all worked out for the best.

  64. Andrew 1 Says:

I like to believe that Freeman and Schiano have no one to blame but themselves for their demise. So that’s what I’m going with. Hope Lovie and Licht have better luck.

  65. Drew Says:

And which one you miss more SCHIANO OR FREEMAN?

  66. Drew Says:

    @Joe
Josh brought us back that game against detriot. Remember?

  67. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Drew

Neither? I see you didn’t offer that as an answer, but… it’s neither.

    • Byrd led all NFL cornerbacks in interceptions for three consecutive seasons (1989-91) and paced the Chargers in four straight years (1988-91)

Would’ve heard more about Gil, but the Chargers were so terrible during his career- (I can Remember Chris Berman calling them the -Yuks -of the West).

  69. DallasBuc Says:

Drew- you make some great points about Freeman. He showed how clutch he could be late in games to orchestrate comeback victories on some pretty bad teams. Especially bad defensively. If Freeman keeps his head together last offseason and remains a professional we probably with a bunch more games, Schiano remains our HC, Dominik is still GM, Freeman either gets a new contract or is franchised and Glennon never sees an NFL snap from behind center. The Freeman meltdown changed everything.

  70. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I think a lot of people forgot that Freeman’s problems and issues started way before, The national media started to hint at some issues https://www.joebucsfan.com/?p=76001 and that was from 10-20-2012. but the local media did not follow up and only asked the pop-star who said. ” Its all about 5, Josh is the Franchise, he is only 23 years old, ”

also after the Detroit game ( which the refs could have called 20 push-off plays on winslow) while he was getting man coverage. the Bucs still had to play 2 more games, one of those was Saint in NO, who wrapped up the playoffs and coasted that game, and started pulling players in the second half.

  71. bucrightoff Says:

carolina got rid of all their wide-outs and kept the no names–thats how good they think cam newton is.
    __________________________________________________________

The Panthers offense was not good last year, ranked 26th in the league. Cam isn’t good enough to make nobodies matter, he needs talent around him and now he has Greg Olsen and then. But Carolina doesn’t need offense, they need that defense to do its thing.
