So Who Will McCown Throw To?

March 12th, 2014

The Bucs still have a giant hole on their roster at No. 3 receiver, where former rockstar general manager Mark Dominik and Greg Schiano struck out badly with Kevin Ogletree and then rolled out Tiquan Underwood, who struggled to get open.

Will Lovie Smith and Jason Licht throw more of Team Glazer’s cash around today to fill the gaping void? Something needs to be done. Joe has to think the Bucs aren’t going to leave their brand new quarterback, mighty Josh McCown, short of a full complement of weapons.

There’s plenty of money available in the coffers with this afternoon’s cutting of Darrelle Revis. So there is no excuse, unless the Bucs want to wait until the NFL Draft, which is a risky proposition.

Unfortunately, Andre Roberts and Dexter McCluster have found new teams with the Redskins and Titans, respectively.

Golden Tate is still floating around and brings quality returning skills, too.

It’ll be interesting to see what names pop up. There are plenty of retread names floating around.

Lions, Golden Tate agree on 5 years

Steve Smith sounds like he’s ready to leave the Panthers.

  2. Evan Says:

Umm.. Golden Tate has already signed with another time at the time of the article 🙂

  3. Kyle Says:

Tate was signed by the Lions good sir

  4. Couch Fan Says:

Who will McCown be throwing to? The other back ups of course.

  5. BucFan4Life Says:

Jilian Edelman? Decker? The draft? ( VERY deep WR group ) we are going to be fine, we will be adding more weapons at WR

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe….so you have annointed McCown the starter?….maybe…..but not a sure thing!!!

With all this spending on defense….lets get Sammy Watkins in here!!!

  7. Jeagan1999 Says:

Tate is gone now too. There are still options out there…in free agency and the draft.

  8. TBLT Says:

Would love golden Tate. Dude is underrated. That being said I would love Sammy Watkins more!!

  9. Bucnnole Says:

Draft Watkins at 7 or move up a pick or toe to land him. He’s the most explosive WR around

  10. Braheem Says:

Steve Smith as a slot guy would be INSANE. I’m sure staying in the NFC SOUTH would be a plus

  11. Patrick in VA Says:

    Would like to see Edelman

  12. bucsalltheway Says:

can anyone say sammy watkins…..we’ve covered every avenue of our team with quality depth….so with the 7th pick i cant imagine us missing out on a top wr in this draft….i sure hope we dont go ol in the first round….even if khalil mack is there i think we would fair better without getting him or clowney….but i’d take aaron donald for some reason

  13. Mitch Says:

Tate just signed with the lions

  14. Derek Clarke Says:

Golden Tate got picked up by the lions

  15. bucsalltheway Says:

or we could bring in santonio holmes give him like a $200.00 a year lol

  16. dre-day Says:

that’s an easy one… steve smith is about to be available… imagine the advantage of having him when we play the two games against the panthers…. he will be supremely motivated, and can also give us tips on the nuances of the carolina offense and maybe even the defense..not to mention, with him in the slot, it would be like us having 3 #1 receivers on the field at once along with mike, and vincent…scary

  17. superd950 Says:

Golden Tate just agreed to a 5 or 6 year deal with the Lions.

  18. DaMayan Says:

Hasn’t Golden Tate signed with the Lions already?

  19. Maxx Says:

    Signed with the Lions

  20. FB Says:

Golden Tate was signed by the Lions before this went up.

  21. Architek Says:

Lions offense scares me…Then again it’s the Lions. They will find a way to lose.

  22. Sam Says:

    Tate just signed with Detroit

  23. Thibs5599 Says:

Vincent Jackson, a healthy Mike Willaims, Brett Myers, and Tim Wright….Those are just a few people he will be throwing too. Possibly Ted Ginn and a draft pick….Seems like a pretty decent group of recievers to me.

  24. Lucky Buccers Says:

    Ted Ginn is visiting

  25. Buc1987 Says:

How many more posters will post that Tate already signed? Let’s play a game. Let’s see who gets closer. I say 19 posters.

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

    rockstar??

  27. Orca Says:

Tate is a fool for leaving Seattle.

  28. unbelievable Says:

There’s a large crop of good receivers coming out in this draft. Value picks in all rounds so I’m super concerned about Tate being signed to the Lions.

Didn’t we have Ted Ginn come in today as well? Anyone know if anything happened with that?

  29. Patrickbucs Says:

Tate signed with Lions 5 years $31 million. We need someone with speed that’s for sure.

  30. ecspider33 Says:

    Why not Edelman and Decker

  31. unbelievable Says:

    * not super concered. Damn phone 🙂

  32. RowBareToe Says:

I am pretty sure he just signed a five year deal with the Lions.

  33. Chef Paul Says:

Didn’t you guys hear? Tate signed with the Lions already

  34. Eddie Says:

I say lock up Ginn and bring in Steve Smith. That would definately fill out the WR corps. I would like to see the Bucs draft Mike Evans. Our passing attack would be unstoppable.

  35. Vincente Says:

Before you get a decent 3wr you need a good QB pick a WR in free agency then go get ya a QB in the draft. That’s exactly what’s going to happen. And I know that they will sign tedd ginn from the panthers soon. Just watch.

  36. Touchdown Gus Says:

Mike Evans or Sammy Watkins would be the answer and the future

  37. Dougy balls Says:

    Tate 5years with lions

  38. Theodore Says:

What about Edelman or Amendola (if he is cut)? Don’t think the Pats are keeping both.

  39. Dougy balls Says:

    Watkins please

  40. SAMCRO Says:

I’m so glad that Joe hinges our 2014 season on the arm of a real career back-up. Joe is so stubborn to even admit that Glennon could have a better year now that offensive line is being fixed that he’s actually elated over McCown? I’m sorry but you can’t be to concerned about our team winning as much as you’re concerned about being right. Lets just skip any fair competition. Joe has already knighted McCown as the starter. What a joke.

  41. Jim Says:

Sadly Tate just signed with the Lions.

  42. Jim Says:

Sadly Tate just signed with the Lions.

  43. Kalind Says:

Joe, how about the other guys that visited (are visiting?) Collins, Peanut, Dietrich-Smith?

  44. PRBucFan Says:

Emmanuel Sanders is coming for a visit…

  45. Kryq Says:

Whatever happened to Charles Tillman ?

  46. BucFan20 Says:

So at what point did Lovie say Glennon lost and McCown was the starter?

  47. billybuttfart Says:

Tate signed a 5 year deal with Detroit….

  48. Kevin Says:

DECKER AND WATKINS!!!!!!!!!! DECKER AND WATKINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DECKER AND WATKINS!!!!!!!!!!!…..COULD YOU IMAGINE ERIC DECKER, SAMMY WATKINS, VINCENT JACKSON,BRANDON MYERS/TIM WRIGHT, DOUG MARTIN, MIKE JAMES, NEW OFFENSE. THAT RIGHT THERE WOULD MAKE ME A HAPPY FAN!!!

  49. ryan Says:

The bucs are bringing in emanuel sanders for a visit.

  50. rayjay1122 Says:

Say yes to Watkins. Then get a QB later in the draft. Then if we suck again maybe we can get Winston next year’s draft.

  51. Jerrjenn2 Says:

Sorry Joe- Tate signed with the Lions.

  52. Kevin Says:

    Please don’t say Amendoloa please…………

  53. PRBucFan Says:

We have another presser at 12 tomorrow

    I’m assuming it’s for the other FA’s

  54. Jerry Says:

Defense might be good. But we wont be able to score any points. In this division….that’s a very bad problem to have.

A career back-up QB for our starter. An aging #1 WR that can’t break free anymore. A #2 WR that wrecks mansions with expensive parties. 2 mediocre TEs that can’t block. And patchwork OL.

    EEK!

  55. BucsfaninChina Says:

    Steve smiff!

  56. Sneedy16 Says:

    @Buc1987

Do they read before posting. I saw them post it about 10 times already. lol

  57. BucsfaninChina Says:

    Ice up son!

  58. Trubucfan22 Says:

I like Edelman. And he would come cheap too. Decker is ok, but anyone that plays with Peyton looks like they are all pros. Decker will want too much and isn’t the player we’d be expecting. Besides we already have a tall slow wr in Jackson. Edelman did have Brady throwing to him which is just as good as Peyton, but Edelman is a workout warrior. He’s the kind of #3 the bucs could really use. Emmanual sanders would also be a great addition he would be the slot but be the #2 wr.

  59. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Lovie Smith knows what he is doing…

All these signings in 2 days??? Wow.

I am so happy we have him. You can only have this kind of free agency success in Madden football on a PlayStation.

Lovie did this in real life.

The guy just cherry picked who ever he wanted and then straight up cut Revis. Wow, Lovie is the real deal man.

  60. kgh4life Says:

What about Kenny Britt? I know there is the Rutgers connection but this guy is talented, however, the past couple years off the field troubles and injuries has derailed his career. Maybe the Bucs can bring him on a 1yr non guaranteed contract.

  61. Eric Says:

Lovie can’t solve all our problems in one day, but he sure is off to a great start.

  62. Matt Says:

Ted Ginn has a visit scheduled

  63. PRBucFan Says:

“@gregauman: Bucs’ Lovie Smith, asked if Josh McCown is his quarterback: “Yes, he is.” —> There it is. So much for competition”

  64. Trubucfan22 Says:

Thank god the bucs didn’t attempt to get Tate. He’s horrible.

  65. Macabee Says:

Listened to the press conference. Adrian Clayborn just got demoted! Johnson will be starting right DE!

  66. Mark Says:

Remember the team is not done in FA.
Give them a break to do there job, not everything can happen at once.

And again aren’t we jumping to conclusions assuming the starting QB…

We should have 4 QB’s in camp is what they said. Then the best wins.

  67. NY Buc Says:

If that’s true about Emmanual Sanders visiting I think I’d rather see the Bucs ink him then Tedd Ginn. Glennon…um, I mean whoever the Bucs starting QB will be next season need more than one healthy, quality, double covered every game, guy not named Vincent Jackson WR to throw passes to (the obvious real reason the Bucs were the last ranked offense)

  68. Barry Says:

I think the more real question is, who will Mike Glennon throw to?

  69. Trubucfan22 Says:

Watkins is good but it would useless to draft him if we don’t have a qb to throw to him. Draft one of the top 3 qbs (Bortles IMO), then Draft one of big WRs in the second round.

  70. WalkdaPlank Says:

Keep calling him a “rockstar” all you want, that doesn’t make him one. Lol “Rockstar” is responsible for the worst transaction in Bucs history, among other things.

On topic, Steve Smith could be cut soon (if he hasn’t already), and Ginn is visiting. Then there’s still Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans in the draft, or that guy from Vandy we could get in the later rounds.

  71. PhantomVash808 Says:

    Sanders is visiting the Bucs.

  72. passthebuc Says:

5 Million a year for a backup. even if he starts, he’s a backup. Regardless, here is the real problem….
No protection, no road graders for runners and no money to buy then. As dumb a signing as Revis last year….

  73. WalkdaPlank Says:

@Macabee – if Clayborn isn’t playing RE and MJ is…who’s playing LE?………Jared Allen? That would be nice.

  74. kgh4life Says:

Would be nice to have Sanders, a “speed in space” type of guy. Wonder how much he would want?

  75. Buccanole Says:

Hey Joe I don’t know if anyone else on here has told you this yet but Tate Signed with the Lions

    Tate signed with the Lions

Tate 5 year deals with the Lions

    Tate signed with the Detroit

Tate signed with the Detroit Lions

    Tate signed with DET

    Lions signed Tate

    Detroit signed Tate

There saved some more idiots some time

  76. Eric Says:

Rich Gannon bounced around, mostly as a back up, for eleven years.

Got to Chuckie and suddenly magic.

Never know. Good pick up, Lovie said he wanted a vet.

Besides, who else was out there? Nobody.

  77. admin Says:

Sadly Tate just signed with the Lions.

Damn. Would have been a fine pick up.

  78. bucrightoff Says:

Lol if you didn’t think McCown was starting. Was obvious as can be

  79. deminion Says:

I like that WR moncrief kid I think he was at ole miss

  80. WalkdaPlank Says:

Nfl.com reported that the 3 year, 30 mil deal given to Ware by the Broncos was initially meant for Allen, and Allen probably would have taken it had it not been for Ware. With Revis cut, could this be possible for the Bucs?

  81. Rrsrq Says:

    Hakeem Nicks

  82. PRBucFan Says:

    AGAIN

    JennaLaineBucs ‏@JennaLaineBucs
That does it RT @gregauman: Bucs’ Lovie Smith, asked if Josh McCown is his quarterback: “Yes, he is.”

“@gregauman: Bucs’ Lovie Smith, asked if Josh McCown is his quarterback: “Yes, he is.” —> There it is. So much for competition”

Sorry MGMers lol, I still say McCown loses his starting job to a drafted QB 😉

  83. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Clayborne has a limitation with his arm… he will never be Simeon Rice… Johnson could though…

So can Clayborne play left end?

This again makes Rock Star’s picks with DEs more dumb moves to add to his list. Clayborn physically limited, Bowers bum knee… Freeman ADHD… Winslow bad knee… Revis and his knee…. and Mark had you guys convinced that the Bucs were knee experts. LMAO.

  84. Couch Fan Says:

Wow. Lovie is really just going to the starting job over to a 34 yr old career back up. That is just ridiculously stupid. I can admit I was wrong though. Sheesh. I guess this means we have to draft QB in the 1st round now.

Unless he thinks McCown is the future? How depressing

  85. PRBucFan Says:

Lovie already said he will be lining up at LE, and get off the whole arm thing.

He’s been playing his whole life with his condition and it does not limit him.

  86. NY Buc Says:

    ^^^

No to Hakeem Nicks. I had to watch a lot of Giants games over the years, the dude used to have ‘it’, but injuries and a piss poor work ethic aren’t a strong selling point for the guy. I admit I am just a passionate Bucs fan with only a very casual knowledge of the game, but from what I saw it sure looked like Nicks pretty much loafed last season.

  87. WalkdaPlank Says:

Matt Flynn got a much fatter contract from the Seahawks to end up sitting on the bench in favor of a 3rd round rookie QB. It’s not set in stone people, but the job is likely McCown’s to lose.

  88. Buc Fan #237 Says:

What about that DT from UCLA who never even played because he was injury prone?

Dominik just drafted on name recognition. Arrilious Benn.

  89. PRBucFan Says:

Price who was NEVER hurt prior to that freak accident?

Come on now don’t talk about something if you have no idea what you are talking about lol

  90. Buc Fan #237 Says:

    You a Dominik lover?

Price was a good pick up?

He was hurt before he even showed up to camp. Not the same one that ended his career.

Dom and his crew took risks by drafting guys who were injured or physically disabled. Bottom line.

  91. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“There’s plenty of money available in the coffers…”

Not as much as you think, Joe. 8-10 million has to be used for the draft.

  92. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Expect it to be a strong rotation. To keep guys fresh for the full 17 weeks.

  93. Hesson0208 Says:

So, what u guys are saying is………. Tate signed with Detroit? lmao… Anyway, I WANT STEVE SMITH & GINN.

  94. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Tampabaybucfan Says:
“…lets get Sammy Watkins in here!!!”

The chances of that are between slim and none. Last week I went back and reviewed all of the 1st and 2nd round picks Lovie made as a head coach.

In 9 years he never once took a WR in the first round. He almost seemed to have an aversion to it.

In that same 9 year span, he took 3 WRs in the second round. In fact it he took more WRs in the second round than any other position.

He has a different GM and OC this time around, which probably increases the chances slightly, but I really doubt it.

He also only took defense twice in the first round. He took oline twice as well…but neither were any good. He did not take a QB at all.

I don’t think it will be OLB unless the MLB that is visiting isn’t signed. If he is signed, then it is likely Mason Foster will be moved outside…which means we won’t need an OLB.

We don’t need a RB either. We signed a TE. No FB is worthy of a first rounder.

Now, even though he might have learned a lesson and could go QB, I think the odds point at safety or OG…maybe RT.

  95. Pete 422 Says:

    Assuming McCown is the starter.

  96. admin Says:

    Assuming McCown is the starter.

Ah, so now we have a McCown Denier?

  97. Hawk Says:

With the signing of McCown, anyone who thought he wouldn’t be named the ‘projected’ starter was just fooling themselves. Lovie ‘inherited’ Glennon. He has no vested interest or loyalty to him. OTOH, McCown has now (twice!) been signed by Lovie. This is Lovies’ guy.
I do believe, however, that Lovie will play the best man… at every position.

  98. Mr Magoo Says:

How about Golden Tate? Has he signed with any one yet?
